1 comments about Guide to Owning a Chow Chow: Puppy Care, Grooming, Training, History, Health, Breed Standard (Re Dog Series).
- The title of this booklet is somewhat misleading. It isn't so much a guide to owning a chow chow as it is an introduction to the breed. There is a very good section on the origin and the history of the breed and there is a decent section on the physical description and characteristics of the show quality purebred chow. The section titled "Living with a Chow" paints a much too rosy picture of the breed. Although the author briefly refers to the chow chow's poor reputation for "sharpness and lack of steady reliability", the author says almost nothing further about the tendencies and characteristics which make chow ownership such a challenge and, subsequently, offers little help by way of behavior modification advice.
Chows are typically strong-willed, powerfully-built dogs who do not readily trust humans. There are a number of factors to be considered before adopting a chow. Because of the breed's reputation for unpredictability, some kennels refuse to board chows and, in some states, chow owners have a difficult time finding homeowner's liability insurance. In general, first time dog owners, families with very small children and people with little time to devote to a pet should be discouraged from owning a chow. Chows are also unusually beautiful and are exceptionally loyal and protective once they bond with a human. Many (but not all) chows are mild-tempered, playful, affectionate and sociable. If you are considering a chow for your household and need more information on the breed, I recommend Beverly Pisano's book, "Chow Chows". It contains much more information than this book and describes methods for curbing an aggressive dog's dominant and threatening behavior.

5 comments about The New Complete Alaskan Malamute.
- This book is full of great history on the breed and information on how to show and sled your dog (once you get to that stage in growth and training!). If you have or are bringing home a new puppy it is not the book for you. I searched for this book because it was recommended to me. I think now that recommendation was only because this certain breeder had a few "mentions" in the book. I am looking for NOW information on my new puppy. This book is great for my friends who stop by -- they look at the pictures.
- If you already own a malamute or are thinking of getting one this book prvides the best guide for you. It not only tells you the pros about the breed but also the cons, and gives you a realistic look on what the breed is about. Ignorance leads to problems with malamutes so the best way to prepare yourself is HAVE THIS BOOK!!! Remember Owning A Malamute Is Not A Right! It Is A Privillage! Jamie Wiatowski, Mimmenuk Alaskan Malamutes
- The New Complete Alaskan Malamute is exactly what the title implies, a compendium of facts and relative information about the breed. Covered are aspects of the history, personality of the breed, sledding, backpacking, medical/genetic issues, grooming, the breed Standard interpreted, a glossary of terms, and much much more. For the prospective or fisrt-time owner, and even long term fancier, this book is a gem for the wealth, depth and breadth of information. Acquisition of this notable work is a must for all fanciers.
- This is an Excellent book on Alaskan Malamutes. We presently own 3 Mals and are getting our first show Malamute in Dec. of 1997. I highly recommend this book to those who are getting their first Alaskan Malamute or people that already have one. It covers everything from the beginning of the Alaskan Malamute, showing conformation, obedience, medical problems, to sledding with these wonderful dogs.
- For a first time mal owner this book would be just Ok, not one of the top three to buy, however, I personally am a history buff and this is a must and it gives back ground of why mals act the way they do or do not do something. I like it.

5 comments about Handbook of Tropical Aquarium Fishes.
- My daughter thinks that Axelrod is the most knowledgeable person regarding fish and aquariums and requested a couple of his books for Christmas. Some of his stuff is pretty old, but this was one of the newer ones (the older one has black and white pictures), so she was thrilled.
- Book was bought for my grandaughter who was always referring to my 30 year old copy.
She mainly uses it for fish descriptions with which she is happy.
- If you decide you must have this book, make sure you get the 4th edition! I bought a 3rd edition from 1983 and despite its NEW condition got none of the pages of color photos that others rave about. The 3rd edition is on low quality paper, with only B&W photos, many of which are too dark to be of use. Additionally, because this book (regardless of edition) is in fact a reprint of the original published in 1955, it does contain lots of dated information regarding equipment and various aquarium set-up and maintenance practices.
In my humble opinion....save your money despite the low prices for this huge book in good used condition and buy a more up to date book with full color illustrations and less "intellectual" language.
- Despite the fact that Dr. Axelrod wrote the text over 20-25 years ago, it is an excellent source for the various aquarium topics that all aquarium keepers eventually run across and need a reference book.
Information about various equipment and supplies are outdated but that information can be found in many different sources. If that is a major interest, this book will not help you. However, it does provide rich and detailed material about diseases, fish anatomy, fish behavior and requirements for aquariums. This book delivers useful and detailed information that leaves nothing to the imagination.
- I liked this book because i could look up pictures of many different fish. it has a lot of general information on livebearers and egg layers. what i did not like was: 1. The information about the fish and the photos were not together. After you read something about a fish you had to look it up seperatly to find a picture of it. there was information on some fish that were not pictured and pictures of some fish with no information on them. 2. there is no fish disease section 3. they talk about plants but there are no pictures of them 4, the filters they talk about are mostly outdated... no modern type filters like wet/dry or cannister, biotypes. if you want a cheap book that explains about breeding and to use it to identify fish this is a good one. The new hybrids are not included though and there is way too much information on the origination and patent of the ______ fish [i forgot, it was a section that i skipped] To be honest I just use the book for pictures only so I can look up the information elsewhere like on the internet.

4 comments about Why Dogs Do That: A Collection of Curious Canine Behaviors.
- I really enjoyed reading this book. It had things in it about Dogs I never knew and I've been raised with Dogs all my life! I have even loaned it out and referred back to it several times! Thanks for writing it. C T
- It's largely anecdotal and sentimental. It's not particularly scientific, nor does it pretend to be. That said, it does provide interesting takes on various canine mannerisms. It's a short book, and I read it in a sitting, but did not find any huge breakthroughs.
- Everyone who owns a dog has observed strange doggie behaviors. Well, at least curious to us, but not to our canine companions. When you've had a couple of different dogs, you know that they all exhibit instinctive traits that seem very important to them. In this small book, Tom Davis explains that dogs are descended from wolves amd have many of the same traits as their wild cousins. He also gives a thoughtful answer to over 40 questions that interest many of us about our pets.
We understand a lot about our dogs because we know them and we're able to use our common sense to figure things out, but sometimes it's helpful to hear what an expert has to say. Because they love us, we all would like to think that our dogs are excellent at judging character, but how about the times when they are suspicious of someone who we know is a good person? Check out "Why Are Dogs Distrustful of Some Strangers and Not Others?" Vicky, our Bearded Collie was the greatest of diggers. She could and did push cinder blocks out of the way in order to dig under a fence. Read "Why Do Dogs Dig Holes?" Princess Poppy, a Beardie Husky mix acted the most like a wolf. She would put her head up in the wolf stance and really give off a couple of piercing howls. The author gives several reasons for this behavior in "Why Do Some Dogs Howl?" My favorite of his answers is: "Do a pub full of Irishmen need a reason to sing?" This book was a gift from my friend Karin who, along with our dogs has shared a lot of daily walks with me where we have pondered the question that all dog owners want to know, "Why do dogs do that?" A fun book!
- I'm a dog lover but a lot of behaviors he/she does confuses me sometimes. The author Tom Davis wrote this book explaining in details for unbelievable 42 manners of dogs. He artfully described in funny way but I also found that some realistic explaination hidden on it. The book gives relaxation to me as I think it is for the general dog lover and interest book reader, not for reference. The author can raise up even detailed l behavior to tell us such as 'why do wet dogs always shake on you?' or some frequent question from children such as 'why do dogs come in so many sizes, shapes, and colors? !! In summary, this book reflects broader views for dog lover in relaxing method and fitted words. Frankly to say, I love my dog and understand him/her much more after reading this book.

5 comments about The Essential Dachshund (Essential (Howell)).
- Six months ago I received my little mini-dachshund Gabriella. She is a silver-cream, dapple coloured, long-haired, beautiful little girl. She has a sweet temperment, is very smart, and lovely in appearance.
I bought this book to help myself along in the process of getting to know the Dachshund personality, health makeup and general guide to raise my new family member.
This book has is all---owning a dachshund is a very rewarding experience and fun at the same time. You will get all you need to know from this book about feeding, training, and caring for your dog's health and welfare. There are many photos and expert tips on how to make your dog a wonderful addition to your family.
- This book was a big disappointment. Its authors write about different types (colors and markings), but fail to provide pictures of what they actually look like. They also write about specific body parts that they fail to note on their "External Features Picture".
Basic questions remain unanswered. Mainly, what does a wild boar color look like? And are any colors or types more rare than others are? After reading this book my questions where still unanswered. The same is for Ann Carey's "The Dachshund". Maybe I'll try "Dachshund for Dummies".
- This book helped me learn more about Dachshunds. I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting a Dachshund. It tells you everything about what a Dachshund is,it says it's traits, how to properly groom it it's health problems and much more. It helped me alot.

- I sit in my window-side chair, watch birds, sip coffee and browse this book... and I'm happy. Thanks, John.
- Most birding books are best perused, but Dennis's books are a pleasure to read cover to cover. Also, the illustrations are incredibly perfect and gorgeously detailed.
Plenty of personally-acquired information here, including some tips for deterring squirrels and other pests.

5 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Scottish Terriers (New Owner's Guide To...).
- The book provides tremendous incite into the Scottish Terrier thanks to the years Miriam Stamm has spent as a breeder, owner and handler of Scotties. In fact, her kennel, Amstamm, is one of the most important breeding kennels in our country for furthering and protecting the breed.
If you own, are interested in or about to acquire a Scottish terrier buy this book. You will not be disappointed. This is a special book reflective of the Scottie as a special breed!
- There is a tremendous amount of information in this book that's generic and could apply to any dog breed. I was looking for information specific to the Scottie and was largely disappointed. When I got to the page where the authors talk about when your dog gets to 55 lbs. size, my attention waned -- Scotties are around 20 lbs. full grown! In large portions of the book, you could change the title and pictures, and you would be reading about any dog breed. The book also appeared to be somewhat of an 'infomercial.' It's disappointing in a book of this nature when one is directed to pet products by brand name, which I think challenges the credibility and impartiality of the authors.
- Great information about the breed. This is not just another "one size fits all" dog book with the same doggy content and different breed photo on the cover. Scotties have an unique personality and need understanding.
- I appreciated very much this book as it offers a wide array of subject about the Scottish from the day it is chosen to feeding and training all in a simple and pretty way. A bible for any scottish new owner.
- This book is perfect for the beginning scottie owner, too. Not just the show person. It gives wonderful basic information on what to expect from living with a scottie.
