1 comments about Cat Body Language Phrasebook: 100 Ways to Read Their Signals.
- Though there are 100 photos in the book, there are nowhere near 100 ways to read them--many of the ways are repeated, some as many as five or six times.
For example, the "defensive" posture--ears laid back, back arched, standing sideways and fur fluffed out, is repeated numerous times with different names such as "Stay away!" or "I'm scared, but I'll fight if I have to!"
All in all, I'd estimate that there are 25 to 30 different ones. All of the photos are good and some are very good, but few, if any of them will be unknown to even people who have never had a cat. For the dedicated cat owner, there's no new information here, and in fact, there is a fairly good deal of MIS-information.
I;d say this book is worth adding to a cat book collection for the photos and the occasional insight, but not worth buying, even used, as a source of in-depth information about reading cat signals/body language.

3 comments about The Complete Book of Saltwater Fishing.
- This book was a primer for people that have had no exposure to Saltwater fishing. Having had some experience with saltwater fishing I found this book useless. There was no coverage on the proper tackle to be used and the techniques to deploy.
- I have checked out at least 30 books from our city and county library systems on saltwater fishing from all over the country on inter-library loan. None were as good as this one! This is the only book that has the hooks, rigs, lures and knots associated with a particular type of fishing in their own section. This is extremely helpful compared to pages of unassociated graphics. The photographs (and there are plenty of them) are all in color and the paper is a high quality gloss matte. There are pencil graphics of techniques. The sections on cleaning and cooking your fish are outstanding with a few recipes thrown in. Each type of fish is identified with the bait to use, method of catch, where to catch them and what equiipment to use. Good water-resistant cover. Can't go wrong with this one.
- This book is full of information that will help put you and your friends into some good fishing. The information ranges from fishing on rental boats in a small saltwater bay to offshore trips for big gamefish and even provides recipes for your catch from Milt's lifelong fishing companion and wife, June. One of the highlights of the book is the use of photography chronicling his tactics as a "jetty jock" in order to land the coveted lunker Striped Bass that cruise the Northeast coast every April to December from the Cheasapeake bay, Virginia to New England. There are even some photos revealing his commitment to teaching and imparting his fishing "know how" to his grandaughters on small skiffs. Rosko has been fishing for more than 60 years and he has culled the best of his knowledge gained over six decades into this 288 page handbook for successful angling! He covers all the coasts but is especially strong in his homegrown territory, the Northeast coast. It makes a great gift for someone who has a passion for fishing or a budding gift for fishing. I bought one for me and one for my newest fishing disciples.

4 comments about A Home for Nathan.
- This delightful book brings awareness to children (and their parents!) about the need for responsibility and forethought when considering adopting an animal. Ms. Roll has presented this lesson with skillful story telling in a most entertaining fashion. The illustrations are totally charming. The author is to be applauded for this wonderful book and her work as a humane educator. All Paws Up!
- I read this book to my five-year old. He loves animal books and this one immediately became his favorite. It is one of my favorites too, because the message is one of kindness. What a sweet book!! I especially recommend it to families that have adopted a pet from an animal shelter.
- I began using this book in my 1st grade classroom 2 years ago and I think my students benefit a great deal from it.
It is both enjoyable and educational. A great introduction to the responsibilities of adopting and owning a pet.
- i thought a home for nathan was a great story for kids about the reality of homeless animals. ( so much so that i gave a year of my free time to do the illustrations) too often, this side of caring for a cat or dog ( or bunny rabbit after the easter holiday) is not taught to kids. it IS a life long commitment, hard but extremely rewarding. a home for nathan is great because it shows kids everything involved in having a pet, without being preachy. it is a serious message in a fun book. when i did the illustrations, i drew REAL people (though the original nathans owner was edited because "he would scare kids"). i wanted to show children that white people with blue hair, and black people with dreadlocks can be professional and responsible. also, though nathans new family is not "traditional" it is normal and filled with love! children learn about life through what they see. in a home for nathan they will see real people doing really great things!

5 comments about The Complete Pet Bird Owner's Handbook.
- This is one of the most complete bird care books. It really should be in every bird owners home.
- An excellent book that is easy to use as a reference and has the most current thinking on the correct way to care and feed birds.
- This book was purchased for historical purposes only to see how far we have come in aviculture.
I caution any new pet bird owner looking for a owner's handbook on birds to buy a CURRENT book--this is very important. Spend the extra dollars for the most updated information. Many things have changed over the years.
- As the title indicates, this book is "complete". Dr. Gallerstein starts off with a chapter to really make a person think about whether a pet bird would be right for you. If the answer to this is "yes", he then goes on to help you decide which bird you should be looking for - age, size, noise level, how to pick a healthy bird, etc.
He gives a brief description of several types of birds, indicating where they live in the wild, their size, noise level, age at maturity, activity level, playfulness, destructiveness, cuddliness, talking potential, biting potential and whether they are good for first-time bird owners. He also gives the potential life span for these birds.
Dr. Gallerstein then talks about bringing your new bird home. He gives some excellent examples of the "do's and the don'ts" to help a bird owner introduce a new bird into the household. He talks about what causes stress & how to reduce stress as well as the daily care and the weekly care required for this bird and a few time saving tips to help you out.
The chapter on proper caging & furnishings provides plenty of information to help you make a decision about what is required for birds ranging from finches, canaries & budgies to the macaws. There is even a shopping list provided so that you don't forget anything when you go to the pet supply store to pick out your bird's accessories.
The nutrition chapter covers information for new bird owners as well as experienced bird owners. Dr. Gallerstein explains what should be fed to your bird as well as why so you will have a good reason to start making changes in your bird's diet, if you haven't been following this advice. This chapter ends with some wonderful recipes.
At some point, you are going to have to hold your bird and the chapter on bird restraint explains how to do this for the various sized birds. Dr. Gallerstein then moves nicely into the chapter on grooming with detailed pictures to help with his descriptions.
Safety for your bird is important & information is provided regarding young children, other pets (including other birds) and household dangers. Everyone wants a well-behaved parrot and Dr. Gallerstein leads both new & experienced parrot owners through some very informative suggestions and ideas.
The chapter titled Avian Anatomy and Physiology has extremely interesting information including colour photographs of normal and not so normal parrot droppings.
Home Physicals and Veterinary Care are both chapters that provide information for experienced pet bird owners as well as the new bird owner and should really be read more than once to help you remember all the important information in it.
Another valuable chapter is titled Medical Emergencies and it starts off with a list indicating which emergencies are life threatening, which require veterinary attention within the day & which can wait until the next day for treatment. Each of the emergencies is then discussed in more detail throughout the chapter.
This is an excellent book for both new and experienced bird owners that I highly recommend.
- We give this book to all our adoptive candidates, and we test them on their knowledge before they take home a bird from The Gabriel Foundation. We order cases of this book! It is the most comprehensive bird book out there. There are more in depth books on behavior, species, medicine, etc, but if you are only getting one book **which you shouldn't do- there are many great parrot books and the more you know*** this is a fine choice. The list of safe woods is invaluable.

3 comments about Bloodhounds.
- This is a generic dog book disguised as a bloodhound book. Out of 192 pages, only 30 pages are about the bloodhound breed. I was very disappointed.
- I have kept dogs for many years and was looking for an in-depth bloodhound reference book. Unfortunately this is not the book.
It is very basic in nature, only has a small section that is bloodhound specific and is mostly a "how to care for any dog" book.
- I knew Hylda Owen and had purchased a bloodhound from her. The book does not give the reader the wealth of experience that could be drawn from Hylda by talking to her, but it is very informative. She does give a nice view of the bloodhound and this would be a good book to have in your collection.
