2 comments about Bullmastiffs: An Owner's Companion.
- I bought this book in the hope that it would give me some insight in to the characteristics and personality of a bullmastiff. This book is good if you re wishing to breed your pet, but not very helpful for general owner information ie personality of your bed, training methods etc.
- Firstly, I'm not related in any way although I have the same surname. Secondly, I have met the author on two seperatet occassions for a couple of hours and did acquire a puppy from him. So it could be said I'm biased but on the other hand I have a brief insight as to where he's coming from. Well, now to the book. It covers all aspects of ownership that one would need to know - from general ownership to preparing to enter shows. Aswell as the history of the breed and possible origins. The book is written in a way that explains 'why things are' and not just that 'they are', especially in regard to how your dog is built. I have read other Bully books and found they don't all cover those essentially daily ownership issues. This would be a must have on your bookshelf to anyone that is really serious about owning this type of dog. After reading it you'll probably find it'll turn into a starting reference for many enquires you may have. In summary: Readable, sound, practicle and written by someone whose dedicated decades to the breed. Buy it!

4 comments about The Happy Little Book of Labs: A Visual Appreciation.
- Since I bought The Happy Little Book of Pugs--how could I not buy this book too? Everyone loves labs and I am no different. Again, the smart design and vintage graphics are what drew me to this book. I'm going to buy 5 more before they sell out and give them as presents to my family and friends.
- I'm a lab man, I've owned labs ever since my college days. I was given this book by my tennis buddy and I must admit it sat on my humidor for about a week before I picked it up. Its a hoot, really funny. I'm glad I discovered it. Great style and wit!
- This small picture book functions as a great resource for anyone interested in owning a lab and finding out more about the breed, or as a delightful display piece for owners and devotees of the labrador. The illustrations and photography are the focal points as you flip the pages, but it is a surprising source of valuable information. Place it on a side table and watch as guests, intending to idly scan through the pictures, end up reading it cover to cover.
- To all the dog lovers out there ( and especially Lab lovers), this book is a must have. Ms Schuckhart really captures the essence of Lab life and lore. Fun to read and look at I found myself chuckling and nodding in agreement at every spread. As a fan of many dog breeds, I can't wait to see more in the series. Beautifully designed as well.

3 comments about Baba Loved Us, Too: Stories of Meher Baba and His Pets.
- When I first read this book, my impression was that it was very light. No paranormal phenomena here! But I had raced through it and in my hurry, I missed what was really important and unique about it.
It was only after my cat died that I re-read this book, and then I finally "got it." In the religion of my childhood, there was little to suggest that animals were worthy of love and appreciation, much less, of God's own attention. In this Avataric advent, (for once!), animals are NOT left behind. God, through Baba, loved them too. This book attests to that and I am very grateful that Mehera decided to write it all down.
It means a lot to me that Baba had a cat, and I like reading about how devoted his cat was to him. I like this book simply because I love animals and I love Baba, so of course, how could I not like a book that's about both?
- I felt the book contained very few tidbits of insight into Meher Baba. Many of the stories told described a relationship that can be observed between any loving owner and a pet.

1 comments about Understanding the Horse's Back.
- this is a thorough study of the horse's back. Every bone, every muscle and the functions are explained in this book. Also discussed are ways to keep the back functioning properly. The author explains what to look for from the horse's body actions that might hint to pain from the back. It's a good book and one that you can read again about eery 6 months to a year...for a refresher.

1 comments about Labrador Retriever (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- I'm sorry to say this, but this book is absolutely useless. There is a HUGE and very detailed section on the origins of the breed (who cares) and after that, there are very few actual facts in the whole book.
The writing is very condesending (pg. 20 "The Lab is no lap dog...he's too big to sit on your lap while you're reading...") I mean, is this something that you need an expert to tell you? The author also makes several attempts to insert humor anywhere she possibly can, which makes reading it even more tedious. (pg. 40 "Buying a puppy...is one instance in which you actually DO get to choose your own family!") Give me a break.
The section on training wastes about 10 pages discussing the importance of training. After that, there are maybe three or four actual tips about HOW to train. Another useless chapter.
The pictures are nice and plentiful.
Overall, if you have never had a dog and know absolutely nothing about owning one, you may want to check out this book before you get one. If you have had any experience at all with dogs and you are looking for some real training help or breed information, I definitely suggest looking for a more informative book. I highly recommend "How to Talk to Your Dog" by Jean Craighead George for general tips on communicating and training your dog.

4 comments about Travels With Tarra.
- Amazing story of a college student who starts her journey with an elephant. Very interesting because it is true.
- I purchased this book because I admire Carol Buckley's work at the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee. For several years, I watched the heroine of this book, the Asian elephant Tarra, on the Sanctuary's website "Elecam," which records the elephants movements during the day. I vicariously fell in love with Tarra from watching her daily movements and was determined to learn more about her past life. This book provided me with a loving history of Tarra, how Carol came to meet her as a baby, purchased her and eventually take her around performing for the next 15 years.
But Carol Buckley had a conscience and a heart. She realized that Tarra was sick and tired of her life as a captive circus elephant. Even though Tarra was treated better than 99.9% of other circus animals, she still grew bored and frustrated with a life pleasing humans and living isolated from others of her own kind. The black and white photos of Tarra with Carol show her life as a performer. Finally, Carol was able to do something few of us are able to achieve: she was able to live her dream by creating a Sanctuary for abused, homeless and unwanted Asian elephants (soon to include African elephants as well). Tarra was the first inhabitant of the Sanctuary, and she was soon joined by others. The book also documents Tarra's happy new life in the company of other female Asian elephants. This is a heartwarming, true story of Tarra and Carol. For anyone who loves elephants and is a compassionate soul, this is the book for you. Hopefully other needy elephants will someday get the opportunity of living in Hohenwald and getting to know both Tarra and Carol. Great book!
- Carol Buckley made her dream come true, a retirement for her elephant Tarra and a sanctuary for elephants on a farm in Tenesse.
Carol and Tarra was in showbusiness together for 20 years but Carol started to question what they did, and what she did to Tara. Having earned more money than she could use, she settled down on a farm in Tenessee, and established one of the few captive elephant sanctuaries in the world. Soon more elephants came to join, ...
- TRAVELS WITH TARRA is an enchanting, black & white book about one woman's lifelong friendship with a captive Asian elephant, brought to America as a baby to be a promotional gimmick for a tire dealership, back when that could still be done.
It is plain & simple reading, with a delightful tale to be told, of an affectionate & adventurous young woman & a bright & willing elephant. A heartwarming read, filled with photos of those magnificent animals &, as Carol tells Tarra's story, we also get to see the ages of that quietly brave & dedicated young woman. TRAVELS WITH TARRA is a unique book, to treasure always.

5 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Alaskan Malamutes (New Owner's Guide to).
- I'm a first time malamute owner. I read the whole book in a couple of hours and found that it does not contain any more information than what I already knew from reading various websites on the Internet. It lacks details and insights. For example, the section on feeding basically said to follow the breeder's guide and does not provide any diet recommendation. Further, a major section of the book is about showing dogs at dog shows. Being a first time owner, the last thing on my mind is showing the dog. I'm more concern about raising and training my puppy. Overall, the book was a waste of money for me.
- I especially liked the selection of the top winning dog in the history of the breed, Ch. Nanuke's Takes No Prisoners, to grace the cover. The information in the book is accurate and the authors well versed in the breed.
- I'm a first time Malamute owner and I must admit that this book is generally good for knowing most facts about the breed. I thought, however, that the book lacked information on how to properly keep a Malamute in a run outdoors. I also thought strange that a longtime owner such as the author would not recommend keeping such a breed outdoors when it's clearly proven to like it better outside than indoors, especially in the winter time when houses are heated and can cause depression for the dog. Other than that, the book is rather good and the pictures are beautiful.
- The book gives a good overview on the history and temperment of the breed. A good book to buy before purchasing a Alaskan Malamute.
- This book was well written with a lot of detail. I have read many books on Alaskan Malamutes and feel this is the most informative on the breed. I've learned more about Malamutes in this book than any other. Great pictures.

- Wonderful, heartwarming, and graphically beautiful book for doglovers of all ages.
A must have. It's also a great gift.
- This book is an especially unique addition to any dog lover's library. The photos beautifully illustrate diverse aspects of the human-dog bond. I received it as a gift, and immediately purchased copies for my dog loving friends!
- Fantastic and really great book. Hard to describe, but the photo's and quotes are really fantastic. I received it today, and enjoyed it so much, that I am ordering three more copies,to give to friends

- There are few bonds as close as the one between man - or woman - and dog. What creatures are as cherished as our canine companions? More than just man's best friend, the dog has become an honorary, and honored, member of our society. To celebrate this unique relationship, A THOUSAND HOUNDS brings together over 400 photographs of dogs, many of which have rarely been seen.
Spanning more than 150 years (1839 to present), this book chronicles the evolving relationship between man and dog. Included are no-nonsense 19th century working dogs, adventuring dogs, dogs of war, police dogs, fictional "superdogs" like Rin-Tin-Tin and Lassie, beloved family dogs, and, to some, the pinnacle of canine achievement: the ultra-bred and groomed show dog. Intellectually and visually stimulating, A THOUSAND HOUNDS is far more than just a collection of dog pictures. This unique book features the work of hundreds of world-famous photographers and artists (from Picasso to Man Ray, Ralph Gibson to Eric Fischl, Wolfgang Tillmans to David Salle, and of course, Elliott Erwitt and William Wegman), dozens of witty and moving quotes about dogs, and captivating essays on the presence of dogs in the history of photography and their relation to man.
