  1. Mindful Horsemanship: Increasing Your Awareness One Day At A Time by freelance writer and horse expert Cheryl Kimball is a superbly presented compendium of 366 contemplative quotations concerning the search for better horsemanship, self-improvement in general, and a love for mankind's dedicated and hardworking equine companions. There is an appropriate quote for every day of the year, with a brief interpretation particularly geared toward horsemanship. 3 comments about Canine.

  1. This is a fantastic book of photography, dogs or not. Great use of depth of field and composition. I think that anyone who's into photography will enjoy this.

As for the content itself, the subject is treated much better and maturely than a typical "dog photo book". The artistic sensibility is more akin to an ueber-realistic photojournalism than a cutesy pin-up calendar.

  2. Canine showcases fifty black and white photographs by Henry Horenstein of different dogs at work and play. All of the canine emotions are captured through an artistic lens with pictures of dogs flying through the air, napping on the sofa, at dog shows, or just showing off. Interspersed with the photos are appropriately quirky snippets of text drawn from such diverse but thematically appropriate sources as Jean-Paul Sartre, Richard Nixon, Thomas Mann, and nineteenth-century dog trainers. Canine is wonderfully entertaining browsing for all dog owners, trainers, and enthusiasts.

  3. Henry Horenstein, that's who. A master photographer, his black and white photographs are studies in light, shadow and texture. Horenstein, whose evocative book "Creatures" made artworks of crocodile teeth and fish lips, has captured in "Canine" the very Essence of Dog. A must-have for any dog lover, or photography buff.

3 comments about What's Up with My Cat?.

  1. This is an excellent book for the cat owner who is not sure what to do with signs and symptoms of their cat. Each sign or symptom has an algorithm with little "yes" or "no" arrows to follow till you reach a probable diagnosis and plan. It also includes Kitty CPR. I wish I had known this book existed before, as I would have bought it for my sister before her cat got sick and died.

  2. The book did the trick for our initial diagnosis of allergies and continues to help us out when our cat has an issue. The charts are great and this book is worht the money.

  3. Great flow charts of sorted by symptoms. Very useful!

1 comments about Guide to Owning an Abyssinian Cat (Guide to Owning).

  1. I would recommend this book to any first time Aby owner. It is excellent value for money - covering the essential elements of background, care and behaviour of your new Aby. It is a slim volume with a soft cover, glossy pages and lots of pictures. It contains a good description of the history of the breed and carefully debunks the old theory that the Aby is a direct decendent of the ancient cats of Egypt. It contains clear guidelines for how to take care of your Aby and what kind of behaviour to expect from your new friend. For a book published so recently I would have liked to see more information regarding the new Aby colours - Chocolate and Lilac. I also felt that the 2 page spread of one Aby was not a good example of the breed and did not deserve the glowing description provided in the accompanying caption.

5 comments about Lend Me an Ear: The Temperament, Selection and Training of the Hearing Ear Dog.

  1. This is one of the best books I have read. I am a SD user, but have never used any hearing tasks, and I don't think I will ever need to. The book was incredibly detailed, especially in terms of determing the appropriate temprement of the dog, which is the most important thing for any Assistance Dog. Hence I felt this book is a must read for anyone in the Assistance dog community. The tasks may not be relevant to you but the rest of the book certainly is.

  2. This book needs to be appreciated as being far more than guidance for a specialized field. The author's insight regarding the balance of reactivity, intelligence and temperament make this a must read for any serious student of animal behavior. Liberal use of photos illustrate the often difficult job of interpreting canine behavior and further discussion of the system used by the author to evaluate suitability and the successful progression of training are so informative.

I bought this bought in anticipation of my husbands hearing loss and only started reading it after it sat on my shelf for months. It has great relevance to every animal I handle, horse and dog, and I only wish I had read it when I first bought it.

This represents a tremendous synthesis of all the best information in the field and more! Highly recommended.

  3. I had a servicedog I am training for hearing help so the first 2/3 of the book were of limited use for me though it was very interesting and would be applicable for choosing almost any service dog. The last 1/3 was very good and I look forward to using them to teach my dog while I still have enough hearing to train her.

  4. Wonderful book. Everything there is to know about hearing dogs is in this book. It takes you from point A to point Z. And has some very informative pictures.

  5. I read Lend Me An Ear specifically for its huge section that analyzes breed
types (as groups, not as individuals) when selecting a dog for service
(specifically hearing) work. I found the training tips to be very helpful,
as they address some of the more obnoxious personality traits found not only
in what the author termed "reactive" dogs but also occasionally in our own beloved
trained service dogs. The book is hilarious at times with many personal
examples of the trials and tribulations of training hearing dogs to alert
    their partners to various sounds

5 comments about The Toolbox for Remodeling Your Problem Dog.

  1. I gained very little from reading this book. I'm sure it has helped others, but the solutions I tried weren't helpful in my dog's situation. I've had much better luck with other authors, specifically Sarah Hodgson.

  2. This book gives some good training advice. For many problems, the author says to see a professional dog behaviorist. My dog was showing signs of mild aggression, and this book was not much help for my situation.

"Good Owners, Great Dogs" by Brian Kilcommons and Sara Wilson addresses more problems and gives solutions that work.

  3. The Toolbox for Remodeling Your Problem Dog is fun, reader-friendly, and is packed full of great information! Despite the book's title, your dog doesn't have to be a problem to benefit greatly from the training suggestions in this book. It also contains a wealth of behaviorial info and creative solutions rarely found in most other dog training books. Excellent for both puppies and mature dogs. I highly recommend it!

  4. This book is describes gentle training techniques to work with difficult problems in dogs. The training takes time and work, no book can do the work for us. But you can feel more in control and see better behavior in your dog if you follow the author's instructions. We use this book with Jean Donaldson's Culture Clash and Dogs are from Neptune. They helped us more than any of the many books and classes we tried. We're still working with our very difficult puppy but we see improvement as a result of using the methods described in this book.

  5. Terry Ryan is a true gem, and her book is as good as she is! *Toolbox* goes through a number of common behavior problems in dogs and offers proactive solutions for them. Management, desensitization, counter-conditioning, and teaching alternative behaviors are all covered. If you would like a *humane,* positive, proactive approach to dog problems, instead of a punishment-based one, this is the book for you! Ryan explains when a problem is too much for the owner and recommends, in those cases, that a professional trainer or behaviorist be consulted. But many behavior problems are easily remedied by the right approach, and this book gives you the tools you need.

5 comments about Persian Cats.

  1. I liked the box, was in good condition, and found the book informative and answered several questions which was my reason for purchasing the book. I was very well satisfied with the book and the quality of the product. Would purchase with that company again.

  2. This book covers ALL cats in general, it's not specific enough for Persians.
    Dissappointing.

  3. The photos inside are very nice but it doesn't represent the standart of persian cat. Here in Brazil the Persian cat is very diferent. Persian's face (principally Persian's nose) is much more different than it is showing in this book.

  4. This book is a good book for its size that does covers the basics that you need to know.Shows many variations of the Persians. For me personally finding a book that shows the blue eyed Chinchilla was a bonus.Plenty of colour photos throughout.

If you are thinking of buying a Persian Cat this book will be a good start.Plenty of information here. For its size the book has a lot going for it.The photos are a treat,You're gonna love the photos in this book! This book has a lot to offer and is good value.Overall,a good quality book.

I would suggest that this book be your first book on Persians then consider books on how to look after your kitten(s) and even the Cat encyclopedia type books after.

  5. I had recently got the cutest little Persian Kitten. As a new cat owner I purchased this book to get information specific to the breed. Outside a few pages of breed information, history and pictures, everything else was just general cat information. I would have expected more on breed care, grooming, and health concerns.

4 comments about Homeopathic First Aid for Animals: Tales and Techniques from a Country Practitioner.

  1. I was trying to find a desk reference or "materia medica" of sorts for using homeopathy with animals. I have been brought up on homeopathic care for myself above going to doctors for colds, allergies and the like so now that I have a cat I am beginning to question typical veterinary practice, especially since my cat was prescribed amoxicillin for an upper respiratory cold and it was even flavored orange - you can imagine trying to give that to an animal that would prefer fish over citrus.

This book had some cute illustrations but was more of a story-book that I would have really had to read through all of than a quick, practical reference that I could turn to in recognising and treating symptoms.

  2. My second favorite reference book when it comes to the homeopathic treatment of cats, and my number one choice when it comes to acute health situations. The conditions are in alphabetical order, so you can find the information you need in a hurry. This book is quite simple to use, especially if you have little or no background in homeopathy.

  3. Homeopathic First Aid for Animals: Tales and Techniques from a Country Practitioner, by by Kaetheryn Walker is probably the first book I reach for when a medical crisis arises. While this is not the book one needs to search for consitutional remedies, it is a must for those sudden acute conditions that pop up unexpectedly. As the manager of a small feline sanctuary where I care for over 40 cats, I recommend this book highly.

  4. I LOVED THIS BOOK BECAUSE OF ITS PERCISE DETAIL AND INSTRUCTIONS. I NEEDED TO KNOW IMPORTANT IMFORMATION ABOUT WHAT TO GIVE TO MY RABBITS SMOKEY,LUCKY,AND JACK. WHEN THEY NEEDED THEIR NAILS CLIPPED OR THEY WERE ACTING WEIRD I USED TO GO RIGHT TO THE VETS. NOW I CAN DO ALL OF THAT ON MY OWN. THIS BOOK TAUGHGT ME ABOUT THE DIFFERENT MEDICINES AND THE BEST ONES TO USE FOR THE SICKNESS OF MY BUNNIES. IT ALSO TAUGHT ME THE SYMPTOMS OF CERTAIN DESEASES AND IT TOLD ME RATHER OR NOT I NEEDED TO GO TO THE VETS! IF YOU DO NOT ALL READY HAVE THIS TO DIE FOR BOOK I HIGHLY RECOMEND YOU BUY IT NOW WHILE SUPPLIES LASTS!!!!!!!!!!
