5 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Great Danes (New Owner's Guide To...).

  1. My wife wants Great Danes and this book was a great place to get insight, and if she could handle these big, but gentle dogs. The book even as small as it is has every aspect of the Danes good and bad. Instead of one my wife now wants three! That's how informative this book is.

  2. Jill Swedlow has written an excellent and informative book for the first-time Great Dane owner. Not only does it explain in great detail the responsiblities of the owner, but also tries to discourage those who may not be prepared for the demands of this "Gentle Giant." If you are purchasing a Great Dane for the first time, or just need a "refresher" on the care of your "best friend," this is the book for you. I always have my copy handy. I truly enjoyed it.

  3. I am a wannabe Dane owner and have just been researching before I purchase - this book has a lot of good information for individuals in my position.

  4. Very well written book, easy to understand and you could tell written by someone with years of experience with this breed of dog. Examples of behavior set forth in this book I could easily see in my dogs. Great Help from Great Book.

  5. I have been considering a Great Dane for a while now and want to read up before making that huge leap. Jill Swedlow's name was on 3 out of the 5 Great Dane books I found.

The part written by her about the breed is wonderful. It is clear she loves the breed but also points out why Danes are not the breed for everyone. She knows her stuff and conveys it in a manner that is friendly and compelling.

The main problem was that almost half the book is a generic dog guide. It relates to training and other issues, but it does *not* specifically address the problems with a dog that is as big as you are.

I hope Swedlow writes a comprehensive Dane book. I would buy it in a second.

5 comments about Talking with Horses.

  1. Talking with Horses As a first-time horse owner, I found this book to be quite useful if your goal is to create a partnership with your horse. Being an alpha rider means firmness, consistency, but most important generating enough trust so that when your horse is fearful, misbehaves, or acts in any non-calm manner, he/she is responsive to your commands thereby providing a safe environment for all. This book teaches, through many anecdotes, the nuances that are typically omitted from other horse books ... and are not evident even in the people who have ridden/owned horses for years. Some of Henry Blake's suggestions might be for the very advanced rider or very excitable horse. For an enjoyable and informative read, I heartily recommend Blake's book.

  2. This is the book you need if you have to deal with horses from the ground. There are many riding books, but few on how to get along with them. That's what this is about. Horses are quite willing to communicate with gestures, and this will teach you how to "talk horse".

  3. Not a bad book. He gets the point across about communicating with horses. Mr Blake a great trick of telling funny anecdotes to get his point across. I haven't had enough to do with horses to confirm the ESP thing yet.

  4. It was entertaining as well as informative. As a new horse owner I am glad it was the first book I read on the subject. Effective communication skills is a must wheather you are a first time or long time horse owner. It was very helpful to be educated on the psyche, and language of horses and to be given examples that just like people, horses each have their own individual personalities. Mr. Blake has had experience with a large number of horses over the years and has developed a reputation for his patience and handling of difficult horses....and reading about how much enjoyment he received from it was a real inspiration!

    Sherry and James Fannon

  5. Henry Blake's first book is wonderful. It is not only a retelling of personal experiences but full of practical advice as well. Blake has several useful suggestions for improving the relationship you have with your horse.

3 comments about Book of the Golden Retriever.

  1. We are breeders. Loved the detailed history of the breed including info on the All-Time Great Dogs!

  2. Between all the books we've read about Golden's, The Book Of The Golden Retriever was more informative ,(in all areas), than all the other books combined. We purchased the book prior to buying our new golden puppy. The information on their characteristics could not have been any more " right on the money". It helped us purchase the perfect, loving dog. We also found relatives of hers in the book along with the kennels they originated. It was absolutely terrific being able to locate her ancestors and read when and how they became... Show Dogs.. Champions...Best Of Breed...etc. I recomend this book to anyone who is in hope of purchasing a Golden...You'll be happy you did!!!

  3. This beautiful 'coffee table' book contains all the information essential to the golden owner, including a detailed history of the breed throughout the world, invaluable advice on every topic from breeding, selection and care of the puppy through conformation, obedience, grooming, and veterinary care. Also includes discussion of the most influential breeding kennels.

4 comments about The Official Book of the Boston Terrier.

  1. This is an excellant book for both the novice and experienced Boston Terrier fancier. The book defines the history and foundation stock of the breed with enough depth that a good understanding of the breeds development can be gained. Wonderful old photos of both Boston Terriers of days gone bye and their owners. In the contemporary section of the book we see a good cross section of the breed from both the US and around the world. Pedigrees, breed standards and grooming are all covered very well. The photo and text quality is supperb. Highly recommened to all lovers of BT's

  2. Although this book has wonderful detailed history on the breed and many, many good colour photographs, it lacked detail in the care of and specific health problems of Boston Terriers. Health was covered in only 4 pages of 176 and these pages had photos on half of each page. I wanted a book as an ongoing reference as my puppy grows, what to feed him, when and how to train him myself; a book that I would continue to use beyond knowing the history of the breed.

  3. This excellent book is a comprehensive guide to the care and history of the Boston bull. The pictures are a delightful addition, showing the Boston in its natural glory.

I liked the part covering the history of this intelligent, hardy, high energy little dog. Champion Bostons are covered; their descendants are featured as well.

Special note has been made regarding the care of pregnant Bostons. More often than not, Bostons are delivered by C-section because their heads are too large for a natural delivery. Gentle suggestions are made to breeders and people who are interested in showing their Bostons.

This book is for everybody, from the serious breeder to the pet owner. It will delight anyone who has ever owned a Boston, owns one, will own one or who loves Bostons in general. Bostons are delightful little dogs.

  4. Muriel P. Lee gives an excellent detailed history of the breed, from its beginnings in the late 19th century to the 1990's. This book contains hundreds of photographs of champion Bostons throughout the history. Additionally, the breed standards are described with some detail, as well as illustrations. The chapters on characteristics, showing, breeding and health deal specifically with Bostons. Information is provided on the Boston Terrier Club of America as well as regional breed clubs. It is an excellent reference for people who are looking for their first Boston as well as the experienced fancier!

1 comments about The New Complete English Setter a Compilation of Interesting Facts, Data, and Observations on Breeding, Raising, Training, Showing, and Hunting Engli.

  1. This book was first published in 1951 and has been updated periodically since. This is the 1982, forth edition being reviewed. The photos are in black and white but quite good. The book gives a good overview of the history of this particular breed, it's care, breeding, training, grooming all all inbetween. This is one of the most complete works addressing a single breed I know of. For those who love this particular breed, this is a book you should really own. Over the past twenty years, the breed standards have changes somewhat (showing), unfortunately, but this does not distract from this work at all. For the history of the breed alone, this work is well worth the money. Recommend this one highly.

4 comments about Discus: A Reference Book.

  1. I have bought this book thinking to include discus in community tank - so what I needed was a general guide to choosing and buying discus, a book to help me decide whether my community tank is any good for this not easy fish, what I got instead is a book concentrated TOTALLY on BREEDING - if you need beginner info on breeding discus the book might help even though it's too general to be of real help. If you are just considering keeping discus this book won't help - there is not any practical detail info on how to choose and keep these fish. And also there are plenty of pictures in the book but not enough used to illustrate the text. I wish I'd have chosen different book!

  2. Great book if you want a book to cover everything about Discus from A to Z

  3. It is clear that the author has a serious love for Discus. Very easy reading, lots of great information. His excitement is felt in his writing.

  4. This is one of many books written on Discus by Bernd Degen, an very experienced discus breeder. The book is particularly suitable for the beginning Discus keeper and has excellent topics about discus care and selection. There is an rather good introduction to breeding too, showinh thechniques in detail. It is not an very detailed book, I think most Discus experts will miss more detailed information on breeding and on selection, specially about the wild types. But in general it is a good introduction to the novice in the Discus world.

2 comments about Animals: Our Return to Wholeness.

  1. I am a professional counselor and I facilitate animal/pet bereavement groups for adults and children who have lost their animal companion. I found this book and Penelope Smith's take on animals passing on to another plane most helpful in the use of my practice, particularly when it comes to regrets regarding their death. So many people are not aware that sometimes our animal companions are ready to pass on and do not want to remain in their current form any longer. Penelope also has a wonderful discussion on whether to eat meat, or any type of food for that matter, and how there is an agreement within nature regarding the food chain and the willingness of animal and plant life to give up their life for another to live. It is just a matter of nature, all we need to do is respect and honor each being on this planet and treat them with dignity. This is an excellent book that is still current even today. Penelope's love and compassion really shines through.

  2. This book is a breathtaking experience! It is well written and gives us account of the steps we can move up to our return of wholiness! A very grateful emotion for me and friends I have recommended it. But, as I live in Brazil and many people do not read English, I would like to know if there is the Portuguese translation...
