3 comments about Dog Training for Kids (Howell Reference Books).
- This book might be old, but it is very helpful. I use it to train all my dogs and some of them are very well behaved. (It even works with stubborn breeds!). DTFK tells about housebreaking, obedience training, tricks, and problem solving. The methods work and the dogs like them. If you get a dog, please buy this book too. Read it cover to cover before you begin with your dog's training, though.
- The latest version of this book is from 1988 and the book uses lots of traditional, but largely out of date corrections that have been replaced in most obedience training circles with postitive training techniques. I have elected to return the book instead of having my niece learn these dog obedience techniques.
- This book has all u need to know from potty to exercise!

5 comments about Through Otis' Eyes: Lessons from a Guide Dog Puppy.
- Moving story about a puppy in training to be a guide dog. Wonderfully moving text and absolutely beautiful pictures. As a puppy raiser for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, I truly appreciate the beauty and accuracy of this story which follows a puppy from the arrival at the puppy raiser's home until graduation as a working part of a guide dog team. A true classic that is appropriate for all ages, this book tells lovingly about the joys, laughter, love and pain of raising a puppy that will some day give another the gift of independence and mobility.
- As the author of "Coco the Love Dog" and a pet therapy partner, we have read Through Otis' Eyes many times while reading with children as part of the "Reading to Dogs program. A wonderful, endearing, uplifting book!
Sue Grundfest, author, "Coco the Love Dog"
- I am a puppy raiser for Canine Companions for Independence and love this book. Any puppy raiser can relate even if you don't raise pups just for the blind (like me).
A great gift as well.
- This is a wonderful book! I read it frequently -- whenever I want to remember what is REALLY important. Of course, my face is wet with tears by the time I'm done, but they are tears of gratitude. Read this book when you need to remind yourself that what matters in life is not fame or fortune, but love. Once again, animals show us how it is done.
- I love this book!!! It is not only an inspiration for puppy raisers, but also a look at life in general. Everyone should read it. I am a puppy raiser in FL and raised a puppy who looks just like Otis - what a bonus for me.
Why is this book out of print? It is so magnificent!!!...

5 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Great Danes (New Owner's Guide To...).
- My wife wants Great Danes and this book was a great place to get insight, and if she could handle these big, but gentle dogs. The book even as small as it is has every aspect of the Danes good and bad. Instead of one my wife now wants three! That's how informative this book is.
- Jill Swedlow has written an excellent and informative book for the first-time Great Dane owner. Not only does it explain in great detail the responsiblities of the owner, but also tries to discourage those who may not be prepared for the demands of this "Gentle Giant." If you are purchasing a Great Dane for the first time, or just need a "refresher" on the care of your "best friend," this is the book for you. I always have my copy handy. I truly enjoyed it.
- I am a wannabe Dane owner and have just been researching before I purchase - this book has a lot of good information for individuals in my position.
- Very well written book, easy to understand and you could tell written by someone with years of experience with this breed of dog. Examples of behavior set forth in this book I could easily see in my dogs. Great Help from Great Book.
- I have been considering a Great Dane for a while now and want to read up before making that huge leap. Jill Swedlow's name was on 3 out of the 5 Great Dane books I found.
The part written by her about the breed is wonderful. It is clear she loves the breed but also points out why Danes are not the breed for everyone. She knows her stuff and conveys it in a manner that is friendly and compelling. The main problem was that almost half the book is a generic dog guide. It relates to training and other issues, but it does *not* specifically address the problems with a dog that is as big as you are. I hope Swedlow writes a comprehensive Dane book. I would buy it in a second.

5 comments about Talking with Horses.
- Talking with Horses As a first-time horse owner, I found this book to be quite useful if your goal is to create a partnership with your horse. Being an alpha rider means firmness, consistency, but most important generating enough trust so that when your horse is fearful, misbehaves, or acts in any non-calm manner, he/she is responsive to your commands thereby providing a safe environment for all. This book teaches, through many anecdotes, the nuances that are typically omitted from other horse books ... and are not evident even in the people who have ridden/owned horses for years. Some of Henry Blake's suggestions might be for the very advanced rider or very excitable horse. For an enjoyable and informative read, I heartily recommend Blake's book.
- This is the book you need if you have to deal with horses from the ground. There are many riding books, but few on how to get along with them. That's what this is about. Horses are quite willing to communicate with gestures, and this will teach you how to "talk horse".
- Not a bad book. He gets the point across about communicating with horses. Mr Blake a great trick of telling funny anecdotes to get his point across. I haven't had enough to do with horses to confirm the ESP thing yet.
- It was entertaining as well as informative. As a new horse owner I am glad it was the first book I read on the subject. Effective communication skills is a must wheather you are a first time or long time horse owner. It was very helpful to be educated on the psyche, and language of horses and to be given examples that just like people, horses each have their own individual personalities. Mr. Blake has had experience with a large number of horses over the years and has developed a reputation for his patience and handling of difficult horses....and reading about how much enjoyment he received from it was a real inspiration!
Sherry and James Fannon
- Henry Blake's first book is wonderful. It is not only a retelling of personal experiences but full of practical advice as well. Blake has several useful suggestions for improving the relationship you have with your horse.
