4 comments about The Encyclopedia Of Tv Pets A Complete History Of Television's Greatest Animal Stars.

  1. I am partial to animal actors, and am more likely to enjoy a movie or TV show that features our furry friends in a positive light. The same goes for books! I found this to be an absolutely fascinating and informative read. I purchased it after writing my own book on animals in the *movies*, and I know the amount of exhaustive research involved... my hat's off to Ken Beck!

    Staci Layne Wilson

  2. Doggone it! Call this one a howling (and oinking, meowing and neighing) success. Here,
in one compact book, is the history of the lives and career of TV's greatest stars --- the
furry (and usually) four-footed kind. The big stars are here --- Rin Tin Tin, Lassie, Clarence the Cross-Eyed Lion, Trigger, Mr. Ed and Arnold Ziffel --- as well as those you might have forgotten about --- Barkley, Spike the Seeing-Eye Dog, Sam the Chimp and Spooks. The journey takes place in alphabetical order, with concise histories of the shows, lots of nifty photos (including Jackie O visiting Elsa the lioness on the set of the ill-fated TV series "Born Free") and great insights into the lives of the non-human small-screen stars. (Who knew the seeing-eye dogs who guided criminal insurance investigator Mike Longstreet were played by three German Shepherds --- Blanco, Snow and Blizzard?) It's a jungle out there. Get ready to grin and bear it. That's "bear" as in "Gentle Ben."

  3. When the book reviews the wildlife that appear in the Full House series they claim Full House went off the air in 1994. It was actually '95 it went off the air. And the Mr. Ed series went off the air in 1966 not 1965.

  4. Great book! Well researched and the information on Lassie was right on target. Even other animals trained by the Weatherwax family are interspersed throughout this book. Ken must have interviewed the world for this!...

4 comments about How To Say It to Your Cat: 6Understanding and Communicating with Your Feline (How to Say It...).

  1. Finally! a book that explores feline health, behavior and feline/human communication with intelligence, sensitivity and humor. I initially purchased the book searching for practical solutions to some behavioral problems we were experiencing with our family cat (they actually worked!) but learned much more about what our cat was trying to tell us in the process. The format makes the material incredibly accessible, and the quality of information makes this book a must-have resource for both the experienced and novice cat owner alike. It also makes a perfect gift for friends welcoming a new cat into their lives.

  2. Practical, fun, and perceptive, Janine Adams' contribution to the "How to Say It" books is an invaluable resource for cat lovers everywhere. This book is chock-full of practical advice, invaluable resources and straight-forward descriptions, all in a delightful format. I particularly appreciate Ms. Adams' holistic, positive and caring approach - it is obvious that she loves and understand cats. 4 paws up!

  3. This book is full of valuable information and advice about understanding your cat. Each complete, yet short chapter covers a different issue or problem, with ideas on what your cat is trying to tell you, how you can best deal with the situation, and what problems and pitfalls to avoid.

There are more than 50 chapters to help you understand just about anything you might face with your cat. From litter box problems, to grooming, to hairballs, it's all covered! Adams offers great insights and a variety of options to solve problems and prevent them in the first place. Her advice is cat-friendly and helps you strengthen the bond with your favorite feline.

I've had cats my whole life, and this book is my new favorite resource when I have a question or concern about my two current cats. It's also a great book for the person new to cats. I have two copies -- one to loan out, and one to have on hand when I have a question myself.

  4. Not content to put words in cat's mouths, pet psychic-style, she introduces the lunacy of Bach flower remedies and the nonsense of Tellington Touch (what you and I call "petting) to compound a worthless book.

"How to Talk to Your Cat" by Jean Craighead George is more reliable. Or even Roger Caras' "A Cat is Watching"

If you want reliable information in this format try "100 Questions Your Cat Would Ask Its Vet" by Bruce Fogle.

1 comments about Bow Wow Yoga.

  1. the book is very cute, but doesn't have much practical value. It was advertised to be instructional and so I thought it would have some tips on using yoga-like stretches to help your dog as well as give training tips. Instead it takes quite a few typical dog positions and makes up fake yoga sounding names for them. I enjoyed it for it's entertainment value, but this is not an instructional book.

3 comments about The Speed Mushing Manual: How to Train Racing Sled Dogs.

  1. Much of the info in this book applies to skijoring as well. Recommended by the skijoring book Ski Spot Run.

  2. This is a great book with some great information. It talks about what makes a good dog, running the dogs, training puppies, etc. It is more geared towards sprint mushing, but a distance racer can still get some good ideas from it too.

  3. Jim Welch has written a clear and concise book on training sled dogs to race. There are specific examples to clarify most techniques and ample support for the effectiveness of each method. He has successfully condensed the knowledge of many of the world's top mushers into a relatively short book. Consider it essential reading for anyone who wants to reach the maximum potential of their dogs whether they be competitors at the national or local level.

1 comments about A Pocket Guide To Dogs.

  1. I bought this book because my one and a half year old LOVES dogs. She has looked through this book a thousand times. I am actually ordering another one because I fear we may loss it. Besides being a "picture book" for my little one, I have read about the dogs and their history. It is a fascinating book with great information from the origin of the dog to the life expectancy of the breed. Love it!

5 comments about Backpacking With Your Dog.

  1. I didn't find this book as helpful as I hoped to. I found the information very general. I did value the suggestions regarding putting together a first aid kit for dogs as well as the information on dog foot pad care.

  2. Now in a new and significantly revised edition, A Guide To Backpacking With Your Dog by dog-owner and backpacking expert Charlene LaBell is a no-nonsense guide to the ins and outs of enjoying vigorous outdoors hiking with one's canine pets. Individual chapters address necessary training and conditioning, mountain biking, geocaching, selecting a pack that properly fits one's dog, bringing along the right amount of food for oneself and one's dog, legal and permit issues, and much more. Black-and-white photographs and easy-to-follow rule lists nicely flesh out A Guide To Backpacking With Your Dog, which is practical, "user friendly", and enthusiastically recommended for pet loving hikers with their canine companions.

  3. Charlene LaBelle admirably covers such practical matters as selecting and fitting dogpacks and planning hikes, and has a special gift for instilling confidence and generating enthusiasm.

  4. If you want a great book on getting started with backpacking with dogs, look no further. Charlene has written the definitive guide to packing with dogs. Don't listen to the naysayers! This is it when it comes to choosing a pack, planning a hike, and camping with dogs. I highly recommend this book -- it's the first and the best out there.

  5. This book has the basics just fine. But nothing on the more experienced side. If your trails require fording you find no help here. Tent training, protecting tent floor & inflatable sleeping mattress from dog's nails etc stuff are missing.

The best part of the book was dog's health checkup, signs of dehydration, paw hardening recipe etc.

Conclusion: If your hike lasts a day, the book is fine. If it lasts a week in the wilderness, your dogs will be in trouble unless you find some more information.

2 comments about Commonsense Guide to Fish Health, A.

  1. This book is full of great information for the dedicated aquarium hobbyist. However, it can be a bit technically taxing for a sit down read or if you are just entering into the hobby. Even still, it is worth the effort to read as it contains priceless information from a well-known expert on fish keeping including practical solutions to keep fish not only alive, but healthy. Read this book and learn how to make your aquarium inhabitants thrive.

  2. At first glance it is physically not what you would call a big book, (keep in mind not all good things come in big packages), I liked the fact that it was published by Barron's, which would mean plenty of current and new graphics unlike other publishers out there. I was right.

Now to look at the cover for the first time. Nice title "A Commonsense Guide To Fish Health" the title says it all. Unlike most books we have read this one does not dive right in to the problem and then prescribes a miracle cure medicaton. Instead we are lead into the murky waters of fishdom's medical field slowly and intelligently in eight chapters that are very easy to read and provide a lot of insight as well as tried and proved methods of addressing some of the more common and even some of the not so common fish health related problems.

Chapter 1 covers stress and it causes and the importance of the aquarium habitat, wich leads to the next chapter on water quality, a very well step, again emphesizing the importance of the environment of the captive animal over a pound of cure. It is in this chapter that the importance of filters are discussed and water quality parameters are explained.

Chapter 3 then gives us the next thing on platter for good fish health, nutrition. Covering more than just the basics on what to feed, Terry goes on to share a couple of his very own recipies for a home made frozen food. A word of warning from both he and I on this, make sure you do not anger the significant other by using the brand new food processor or blender.

Chapter 4 covers Disease and dissection. Covering such things as equipment and a section on euthanasia, and disease identification. This leads us to chapter 5 wich covers parasites and their treatment. Chapter 6 covers bacterial and fungal infections and their cures. Chapter 7 covers viruses and their prevention with chapter 8 covering miscellanous maladies.

Overall it is a fresh new look at an age old problem(s). With plenty of pictures and graphs.
