4 comments about Equine Reproduction.

  1. It is the highest book because it widely learns horse's breeding.
The person to whom a clinical person also is doing the basic research and the
student want to have it by all means.
There is value of this amount of money enough.

  2. A very useful and comprehensive book that covers the needs of the field vet as well as the ones of the university researcher. Detailed sections on each subject are well organised and easy to move trough (uncommon fact for a book of this size). I bought it for practice use and is a constant source of useful informations. It always clears my doubts.

  3. This book is a thorough review of current techniques in equine reproduction medicine. The level of detail is extensive, thus making this book a great reference for the equine practitioner. It includes background information as well as currently accepted treatment protocols, so is very handy for both equine vets and vet students (like myself). Highly recommended for students & practitioners specializing in equine medicine.

  4. This book is a technical book on breeding of the horse and while it covers evertything from problems with the mare, problems with the stallion, foaling problems it is not written in a language easily understood by the average horseman. It does cover topics such as anatomy, physiology, endocrinology, the estrous cycle, reproductive examination, manipulating the reproductive cycle, reproductive surgery, pregnancy, partuition, the stallion and the foal as well as diseases and disorders affecting breeding it is not easy reading. There is a great deal of information in the book containing 1114 pages, good photographs, and a great deal of information I found that I personally was seeking a more down to earth book that laid out breeding in simpler terms. it does not go into genetic inheritance except in genes that might cause death or abnormalities. I would reccommend it for anyone who would be interested in breeding on a large scale but not for someone wanting to produce one or two foals.

5 comments about The Arabian: A Guide for Owners.

  1. If I bought only one book about Arabians, this would be it. What I like best about this book are the pictures of foundation sires of the past and influential stallions of more recent years. The reader does have to keep in mind that the book was published 20 years ago, so a lot of modern stallions won't be included. This is a great book that covers every subject in detail and has some really good conformation drawings that show you what is and is not desirable.

  2. As an Arabian horse breeder, I have had this book for years and always recommend it to any new owners of an Arabian horse. There is a lot of overall general horse information as well as highlights on historical breeding programs, Arabian conformation, showing basics, building/fencing etc. This is a real "How to..." book.

  3. I am a first time Arab owner and have found this book to be invaluable. Geared toward the Arab breed, Sharon included many topics in her book that can be used for any breed. From confirmation and breeding to the best halter to show off your horses head and how to train your horse how to hold that "Arab pose". There is so much to learn from this book for everyone from the backyard owner to the professional trainer/show person.

  4. This book is absolutely the best book I have ever read about the Arabian Horse.I am a small Bask line breeder and this is my reference book, I have two copies, one I use on a daily basis, and one I purchased to keep because it is signed by Sharon Byford and I will treasure it always.

  5. This is an excellent book for the Arabian horse owner; both the novice horse owner, for which this is a MUST and the experienced horse owner, form whom this provides excellent back to basics. The author's knowledge of the Arabian horse and her obvious pleasure at living amongst them generates enthusiasam for the reader and encourages capable, caring horsemanship. Illustrations and photos are nicely balanced with text, rich in history of the Arabian horse, foundation bloodlines, proper conformation, tips on grooming, feed, trailering, showing, behaviour, selecting veterinarians, and much, much more.

2 comments about The Tao Of Horses: Exploring How Horses Guide Us on Our Spiritual Path (Tao of).

  1. While I appreciate the theories set forth in the book, I struggled reading it and found myself putting it down several times in frustration. The principles are good principles, as mentioned in the previous review, however, I felt the book had too much emphasis on superficial things (i.e. money) to truly be a guide to our spiritual path. Although I can see the benefit of interviewing famous jockeys and horse stuntmen, I feel Mccall could have driven her point home better if she interviewed and discussed experiences of the average person and their horses.

  2. Compiling thoughts and insights from today's legendary horsemen and women, McCall creates a tapestry of emotion surrounding my favorite animal, the horse. Each chapter takes a specific thought such as harmony or power or communication and then brings in the words of people who work with horses in those capacities. From legendary jockeys to people who run equestrian programs for children, each chapter provides much food for thought. At the end of each chapter are exercises for the reader to do as well as links providing additional information. This makes The Tao of Horses much more than a book on equine spirituality, but also it's a book full of resources.

The book can be read straight through or simply picking a chapter and focusing on the thoughts held therein. I found the book to be interesting. It made me look at my own relationship with my horse in a more meaningful way, as well as made me think about applying these principles in my own life. The Tao of Horses isn't just a book, it's a way to change your life and for the better.

5 comments about Sugar Gliders As Your New Pet.

  1. Upon purchasing this book i immediately thought, 'Yes! My Sugar Gliders' will live prosperously now!'. However after 20 minutes of using this book, the smug grin was wiped off of my face. My favourite sugar glider 'Leslie Hughes' had died of lung cancer. The chapter 'Teaching your Sugar Glider to smoke Cigars' was partly responsible for this I feel.

  2. I have owned my sugar gliders for ten years (hopefully I'll have them at least 5 or more). A lot of time was spent researching with books, the internet, and message boards. Sugar gliders are great pets, but they not easy pets (on a scale of 1 to 10 - a 9). Nor are they good pets for everyone during all points of life. They live a long time and take as much care and money as a dog or cat.

I bought this book a few years ago when I first owned my crew. I ended up throwing it away because it was so bad. First off, the pictures are very pretty and glossy (typical of this publisher) but they are all of the same animal which shows you the scope of the author's experience--someone with lots of glider experience would have shots of many different animals.

Furthermore, the advice offered in this book is mediocre--in fact some of the husbandry advice could actually HARM a sugar glider (ex- NEVER FEED CATFOOD - the ash in it can block up a glider's intestinal tract and kill him).

There is very little info in it about handling/bonding with gliders or their complex personalities--and how to deal with day-to-day issues and emergencies (trimming sharp nails, bonding, benefits of neutering, Leadbeater's mix--proper diet, how to deal with injuries and self-mutilation, etc). The thing this book mostly talks about is breeding and the genetics of breeding which is not useful if you just want a pet.

There are much better books (Caroline MacPherson comes to mind) and resources (ex- ISGA website and Glider Central website) to learn about sugar gliders and their necessary care.

  3. I followed the guidelines as outlined in this book and found that it only made brief mention the most important parts of raising sugar gliders. The dietary information is largely incorrect, and upon review of the book by my veteranarian I've decided this book is only good for the pictures. It is best to speak to a vet experienced with sugar gliders and NEVER rely on a book such as this one.

  4. This book i feel was not very helpful! It did not have a variety of pictures. All of the pictures were of the same animal and it was always relieving itself! The did not include most of the information I found that I really needed to tame and care for my two sugar gliders

  5. I liked this book becuase it was very helpful, but it is har to understand. This book was a very intresting book to read but I think much of the information was way to scientic and hard to understand. The pictures are great! The book was very helpful taking care of "Joey."

5 comments about Natural Horse-Man-Ship (Western Horseman Books).

  1. I did not find this book helpful at all. Mr.Parelli is all over the place with his writing. There are no real instructions on how to train, just his philosophy. I did not find the book useful, it will be the first book to go in my garage sale pile. He's very "showy".

  2. This book, along with the entire Parelli Levels DVD home-study, Savvy monthly magazines and DVD's, Liberty & Horse Behavior DVD Set and the Success Series DVD, teach a philosophy of thinking like the horse, caring for your horse with leadership and love, and always keeping it natural.
Parelli, who is very experienced and knowledgable in the theory and practice of horse training, psychology and behavior, teaches us how to understand how horses think and learn. It's nothing short of amazing.

Once you read this book, you'll want to learn more, and Pat & Linda Parelli provide many valuable resources to support you on your journey with your horse. Together they teach the 8 Principles of Natural Horsemanship, stressing that preparation, patience, love, language and leadership are all important keys to learning how to read, motivate and trust your horse - and most importantly, build and grow a bond with your equine partner.

Parelli teaches that since 99% of problems with horses are 'problem people' not 'problem horses' his book and their entire study program, is really a people-training guide. The Parelii's step-by-step program is easy to follow and will take you from "green" to savvy in regards to discovering your potential, revealing your horse and treating your horse with dignity, compassion and understanding.

I've been on the Parelli Journey for nearly two years now, starting from "scratch" and knowing only that my love for my horse was the engine that would motivate me. I had no idea what I was getting into, but when I was introduced to the Parelli's Natural Horsemanship study, I was guided in a profound, logical, confident way - it was as if Pat and Linda were right there with me. Start with this book, open your mind and heart to new challenges with your horse, and you will discover a journey that fuels your equinne passion with knowledge, principles, communication, leadership, and a bond of trust and love. Thank you Pat and Linda.

  3. I thought this book was excellent! I am a new horse owner and found it to be very helpful. Also, I am not into hurting my horse so reading about working with him naturally was right up my alley.

  4. I love the parelli level system but this book is poorly organized and not very helpful. It is more about a philosphy and witty remarks than a method of training. Stick to the level DVDs.

  5. i enjoyed reading and value the information in this book.even if you don't have a horse just love them you would find this book interesting.

5 comments about American Pit Bull and Staffordshire Terriers: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training (A Complet).

  1. As a first time dog/Amstaff owner, I found this book very helpful for the first couple of months of ownership, but would highly recommend following it up with The American Staffordshire Terrier by Jacqueline Fraser ASAP.

  2. Sorry folks, this is a basic dog book. You could put a poodle on the cover and you wouldnt have to change the text. Someone didnt do thier homework on this one.Its a waste of time and money at the breeds expense!

  3. I really enjoyed this book. I am not yet an Amstaff or APBT owner but I found the information in this book to be extremely informative as I attempt to evaluate whether this breed is the right choice for me. The pictures are just excellent.

  4. This book was a waste of time and money. There was very little specific information on the breed except on probably 3-5 pages. Almost everything else should just say canine.

  5. The author covers everthing from housebreaking and training to what to look for in body structure, to what to expect from your APBT. It answered all the questions I had and more that I didn't know yet. It's a great book, a definite buy.

1 comments about Understanding the Horse's Back.

  1. this is a thorough study of the horse's back. Every bone, every muscle and the functions are explained in this book. Also discussed are ways to keep the back functioning properly. The author explains what to look for from the horse's body actions that might hint to pain from the back. It's a good book and one that you can read again about eery 6 months to a year...for a refresher.

4 comments about On the Fence: A Parent's Handbook of Horseback Riding (Howell Equestrian Library).

  1. So, your child wants to ride a horse. Here then, in comprehensive detail, are answers to the multitude of problems and questions you will face. Learn how, where and when to best get started--how to find appropriate resources while keeping within an affordable budget for this expensive sport. The author has thoroughly researched and provided answers to every question you or your child will have in beginning, sustaining, and enjoying this very special endeavor. This book provides an unique opportunity to learn all you need know while saving endless time and recurrent difficulties. You'll savor it!

  2. This book by Janet Barrett demonstrates an insiders knowledge of a child learning to ride. What is particularly helpful is that Ms. Barrett knows what is going on in the child's head. Thus the parent knows what to expect when the child suddenly wants to buy a horse or stop lessons for a while. This is a great manual that takes the parent step by step through the process from casual interest to wanting lessons, finding a stable and performing in shows. I would recommend it highly to any parent who hears those words for the first time: mom, I want to ride a horse!"

  3. I can't imagine any parent starting their son/daughter in the sport of riding without reading and owning a copy of this book to refer to continuously as they go. It is not only informative on a day-to-day basis, but it is a valuable resource in understanding your child's progression through the sport from the first lesson onward (and yours from even before that!) Throughout, as your child moves from beginner, to intermediate and beyond, the information is explicit and clear. I suggest that anyone whose child wants to ride get this book and keep it as their "bible"!

  4. This book starts with the one's child saying: Mom, I want to ride a horse! Overwhelmed by fears of what you don't know and the expense of an activity you are afraid your child will give up too quickly (or not quickly enough), this book addresses all the questions parents face as they face them. Very easy to read and nicely laid out, this book provided the answers we had as our daughter was deciding if this was "the sport for her". As I knew little to nothing about horseback riding and nothing about stables or lessons, this book helped me make the right decisions at the right time and kept me from rushing into buying more equipment than I needed.

Before you go down this path, read this book!
