4 comments about On the Fence: A Parent's Handbook of Horseback Riding (Howell Equestrian Library).

  1. So, your child wants to ride a horse. Here then, in comprehensive detail, are answers to the multitude of problems and questions you will face. Learn how, where and when to best get started--how to find appropriate resources while keeping within an affordable budget for this expensive sport. The author has thoroughly researched and provided answers to every question you or your child will have in beginning, sustaining, and enjoying this very special endeavor. This book provides an unique opportunity to learn all you need know while saving endless time and recurrent difficulties. You'll savor it!

  2. This book by Janet Barrett demonstrates an insiders knowledge of a child learning to ride. What is particularly helpful is that Ms. Barrett knows what is going on in the child's head. Thus the parent knows what to expect when the child suddenly wants to buy a horse or stop lessons for a while. This is a great manual that takes the parent step by step through the process from casual interest to wanting lessons, finding a stable and performing in shows. I would recommend it highly to any parent who hears those words for the first time: mom, I want to ride a horse!"

  3. I can't imagine any parent starting their son/daughter in the sport of riding without reading and owning a copy of this book to refer to continuously as they go. It is not only informative on a day-to-day basis, but it is a valuable resource in understanding your child's progression through the sport from the first lesson onward (and yours from even before that!) Throughout, as your child moves from beginner, to intermediate and beyond, the information is explicit and clear. I suggest that anyone whose child wants to ride get this book and keep it as their "bible"!

  4. This book starts with the one's child saying: Mom, I want to ride a horse! Overwhelmed by fears of what you don't know and the expense of an activity you are afraid your child will give up too quickly (or not quickly enough), this book addresses all the questions parents face as they face them. Very easy to read and nicely laid out, this book provided the answers we had as our daughter was deciding if this was "the sport for her". As I knew little to nothing about horseback riding and nothing about stables or lessons, this book helped me make the right decisions at the right time and kept me from rushing into buying more equipment than I needed.

Before you go down this path, read this book!

5 comments about Handbook of Tropical Aquarium Fishes.

  1. My daughter thinks that Axelrod is the most knowledgeable person regarding fish and aquariums and requested a couple of his books for Christmas. Some of his stuff is pretty old, but this was one of the newer ones (the older one has black and white pictures), so she was thrilled.

  2. Book was bought for my grandaughter who was always referring to my 30 year old copy.
She mainly uses it for fish descriptions with which she is happy.

  3. If you decide you must have this book, make sure you get the 4th edition! I bought a 3rd edition from 1983 and despite its NEW condition got none of the pages of color photos that others rave about. The 3rd edition is on low quality paper, with only B&W photos, many of which are too dark to be of use. Additionally, because this book (regardless of edition) is in fact a reprint of the original published in 1955, it does contain lots of dated information regarding equipment and various aquarium set-up and maintenance practices.

In my humble opinion....save your money despite the low prices for this huge book in good used condition and buy a more up to date book with full color illustrations and less "intellectual" language.

  4. Despite the fact that Dr. Axelrod wrote the text over 20-25 years ago, it is an excellent source for the various aquarium topics that all aquarium keepers eventually run across and need a reference book.

Information about various equipment and supplies are outdated but that information can be found in many different sources. If that is a major interest, this book will not help you. However, it does provide rich and detailed material about diseases, fish anatomy, fish behavior and requirements for aquariums.

This book delivers useful and detailed information that leaves nothing to the imagination.

  5. I liked this book because i could look up pictures of many different fish. it has a lot of general information on livebearers and egg layers. what i did not like was: 1. The information about the fish and the photos were not together. After you read something about a fish you had to look it up seperatly to find a picture of it. there was information on some fish that were not pictured and pictures of some fish with no information on them. 2. there is no fish disease section 3. they talk about plants but there are no pictures of them 4, the filters they talk about are mostly outdated... no modern type filters like wet/dry or cannister, biotypes. if you want a cheap book that explains about breeding and to use it to identify fish this is a good one. The new hybrids are not included though and there is way too much information on the origination and patent of the ______ fish [i forgot, it was a section that i skipped] To be honest I just use the book for pictures only so I can look up the information elsewhere like on the internet.

1 comments about The Everything Yorkshire Terrier Book: A Complete Guide to Raising, Training, And Caring for Your Yorkie (Everything: Pets).

  1. The title is self explanatory. This book will not be too helpful to a beginner as it explains everything with very little graphics and it is difficult to visualise aspects such as the grooming of the dog. I thought the toilet training bit was lacking as well and served more as a sweeping generalisation of known information than anything that would be truly helpful to a novice.

On the plus side, the writing is pleasantly light, although this does not make up for the lack of illustrations and depth.

4 comments about What Cats Teach Us...: Life's Lessons Learned from Our Feline Friends.

  1. This book makes a nice gift for a cat lover....it has nice pictures with inspirational quotes.

  2. This short book is filled with cute and adorable photos of cats. Each photo is accompanied by a "lesson" -- sometimes wise, sometimes funny, but always put into a fresh context by the photo. A great gift for cat lovers.

  3. This is a delightful collection of feline photography, each photo accompanied by a small quip or word of wisdom that is sure to bring a smile to the reader's face. The pictures are beautiful and well-executed, and the cats shown in them are equally diverse and attractive. My favorite shot has got to be one of a kitten who has somehow gotten him/herself draped inextricably over the arm of a lamp, and dangles in midair awaiting rescue. The caption reads: "Give in and accept help in an impossible situation." This little book would make an excellent stocking-stuffer, or simply a treat for yourself.

  4. This little photo book is absolutely wonderful and makes a great addition to any pet lover's library. The photos are so adorable, and the captions of life's lessons are so clever and cute. A great way to showcase the ways cats enrich our lives.

  1. Stephen Baker has written a worthy successor to his best-seller, "How to Live with a Neurotic Dog." Now, additional nuances in dogdom. Don't be out-witted, or at least, if you must be, be witty with these insights from the master of the dog mind. See also: How to Live with a Neurotic Dog
