2 comments about California Grizzly.
- Beyond the scientific portions of this book, California Grizzly spends a Chapter discussing the role of the grizzly bear as a symbol and emblem of California. It collects facts and pieces of information not readily available elsewhere, like very early images of the California Bear Flag and information about drawings of the California grizzly. Given that its two authors were zoologists, it is impressive that they spent the time and had the interest to establish some of the more humanly significant materials about this animal, and its influence as symbol.
Since the book was first published in 1955, it is pleasant to have a new edition, which makes its information available to a new generation of readers and Californians.

- Though the work is forty years old, Storer and Tevis remains a valuable sourcebook for those wishing to understand the full nature of an extinction. It's all here: bear biology, relationships with Indians, relationships with Spaniards, stories of famous California Grizzlies, the ~real~ life and time of Grizzly Adams, and more. Whether you are a biologist, a historian, or just an armchair wildlife enthusiast, you will find California Grizzly a fascinating and necessary book.

5 comments about Animal Friends, Tail Wagging And Throat Purring Stories of Shelter And Rescue Pets.
- Being able to share Mama D's story was one of the truly memorable times in my life; knowing that her story is just one of millions makes my heart break. Everyone who read my copy of this book has loved the animals, cried over their circumstances, & rejoiced at most of the outcomes. In an age of all the cruelty in the world, it does my heart good knowing this kind of book can touch so many. Christina, thank you again for your belief in Mama D's story & it's ability to touch your readers.

- I haven't read all of this book, but rather the stories that interested me. Several brought tears, usually happy, to the eyes. There is a wide variation of the expertise of the writers, but it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the read, and shows you don't have to be a professional writer to write a good story. I would recommend this book to those that have an interest in saving unwanted and abused animals, and perhaps encourage more people to seek out adopting these "loosers". Most make our lives much fuller. Heart warming, feel good stories.
- This book was wonderful!! It made you laugh and cry, which is the scale I judge books on. The stories were written in different styles, making it so personal. And it makes you want to head down to the nearest animal shelter to see how you can help. Congratulations to the author. I wait for her next compilation.
- I became aware of this book through the local Pittsburgh Shelter I volunteer for - Animal Friends. The only no-kill shelter in the city of Pittsburgh. It has many heart warming stories and I've sat reading many with tears in my eyes. It not only tells tails of pets from Animal friends, but other rescue groups as well. A must for any animal lover out there.
- This book is the best I've read about rescued pets. Too many people look at rescue and shelter pets as second best. Nothing could be further from the truth. This book shows pets who have changed lives. Whether they come to us at a time we need a best friend or we rescue them when all of their chances are gone. Animals make lives better every day! Thanks to Chris for telling their stories!

5 comments about Flea Market Fidos: The Dish on Dog Junk and Canine Collectibles.
- Such a fun and witty little treasure. If you love dog collectibles and vintage treats, this is the book for
you. I received it as a gift, and have been giving it
as a gift to all of my fido friends ever since.
- This book explored the 'types' of canine collectibles one might find in the marketplace, but it didn't address the 'value' of these collectibles, which would have been much more insightful. The content was purely fluff with little substance to offer a true collector.
- I just purchased this magical book. I couldn't put it down. The photos were amazing and the writing was so clever and unique. Each page brought a new smile and warm feeling. I am going to order one for each of my friends and family. I can't think of a nicer gift to send someone than this special book. In my home, it's my other "best friend ".
- Dog junk and canine collectibles haven't received their own collectibles guidebook before: enter Flea Market Fidos, a unique guide to canine collectibles which covers everything from dog drawings, to crafts and stuffed animals. Besides history and values, Flea Market Fidos also covers the best shops, flea markets, and web sites for locating canine valuables.
- What an adorable book! I received it as a gift yesterday and I just couldn't put it down. The photos are great, the writing is comical and its a real feel-good book!

1 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Bichons Frises.
- Mary Ellen and Gene Mills' new book should be a part of every new Bichon puppy owner's "preparing for the new puppy" kit. Gives the reader a thorough understanding of how the Bichon became what it is today and how its history affects the way the breed behaves. Lovely colored photos of all kinds of Bichons in "show clothes" and "play clothes."

4 comments about The Reign of the Greyhound.
- This is an excellent book for those who want an in depth look at the history of the greyhound. It doesn't have info. on how to care, treat, or train, but it provides more background than I've found in any other book. The author uses personal references which make it more meaningful. Really, an enjoyable read from a greyhound foster parent, active rescuer, and a 4 time adopter.
- Being both a sighthound owner and a history buff, I was so delighted to have found this book. I can't recommend it enough.
I can guarantee that if you haven't had experience with sighthounds, you will want to after reading this! For those of us who know the breed, it is a long overdue salute to one of the most overlooked and unappreciated dog breeds in the world. I especially liked the photos that accompanied the text. It was wonderful to see so many representations of greyhounds through the ages. I thought that chapter 1, on the Greyhound family, was very informative, and the author managed to put a lot of information that is rarely found all in one place into a very readable and enjoyable format. Read this book- You'll love it, even if you don't own a Greyhound! I hope that Cynthia Branigan's book helps many many more retired racing Greyhounds find homes with people who learn about them from her book as well.
- I thought I knew all there was to know about my Greyhound until I read this book. In it I learned that my dog's ancestors have been delighting humans for literally thousands of years. The book takes you on a tour of the history of civilization with Greyhounds in the leading role. If only history had been so interesting when I was in school! The artwork is breathtaking, the adoption anecdotes are both hilarious and touching and Cynthia Branigan is obviously both a scholar and a person with a big heart. If you own a Greyhound you owe it to your dog to learn more about his contribution to history.
- I was not really interested in the history of greyhounds, but have been contemplating adopting one. I received this book as a gift, and enjoyed it much more than I expected. She makes it interesting with some amazing stories, with some astronomical numbers in some cases. The most interesting part is her own experiences with these dogs. A good read.

4 comments about Equine Reproduction.
- It is the highest book because it widely learns horse's breeding.
The person to whom a clinical person also is doing the basic research and the
student want to have it by all means.
There is value of this amount of money enough.
- A very useful and comprehensive book that covers the needs of the field vet as well as the ones of the university researcher. Detailed sections on each subject are well organised and easy to move trough (uncommon fact for a book of this size). I bought it for practice use and is a constant source of useful informations. It always clears my doubts.
- This book is a thorough review of current techniques in equine reproduction medicine. The level of detail is extensive, thus making this book a great reference for the equine practitioner. It includes background information as well as currently accepted treatment protocols, so is very handy for both equine vets and vet students (like myself). Highly recommended for students & practitioners specializing in equine medicine.
- This book is a technical book on breeding of the horse and while it covers evertything from problems with the mare, problems with the stallion, foaling problems it is not written in a language easily understood by the average horseman. It does cover topics such as anatomy, physiology, endocrinology, the estrous cycle, reproductive examination, manipulating the reproductive cycle, reproductive surgery, pregnancy, partuition, the stallion and the foal as well as diseases and disorders affecting breeding it is not easy reading. There is a great deal of information in the book containing 1114 pages, good photographs, and a great deal of information I found that I personally was seeking a more down to earth book that laid out breeding in simpler terms. it does not go into genetic inheritance except in genes that might cause death or abnormalities. I would reccommend it for anyone who would be interested in breeding on a large scale but not for someone wanting to produce one or two foals.

5 comments about The Arabian: A Guide for Owners.
- If I bought only one book about Arabians, this would be it. What I like best about this book are the pictures of foundation sires of the past and influential stallions of more recent years. The reader does have to keep in mind that the book was published 20 years ago, so a lot of modern stallions won't be included. This is a great book that covers every subject in detail and has some really good conformation drawings that show you what is and is not desirable.
- As an Arabian horse breeder, I have had this book for years and always recommend it to any new owners of an Arabian horse. There is a lot of overall general horse information as well as highlights on historical breeding programs, Arabian conformation, showing basics, building/fencing etc. This is a real "How to..." book.
- I am a first time Arab owner and have found this book to be invaluable. Geared toward the Arab breed, Sharon included many topics in her book that can be used for any breed. From confirmation and breeding to the best halter to show off your horses head and how to train your horse how to hold that "Arab pose". There is so much to learn from this book for everyone from the backyard owner to the professional trainer/show person.
- This book is absolutely the best book I have ever read about the Arabian Horse.I am a small Bask line breeder and this is my reference book, I have two copies, one I use on a daily basis, and one I purchased to keep because it is signed by Sharon Byford and I will treasure it always.
- This is an excellent book for the Arabian horse owner; both the novice horse owner, for which this is a MUST and the experienced horse owner, form whom this provides excellent back to basics. The author's knowledge of the Arabian horse and her obvious pleasure at living amongst them generates enthusiasam for the reader and encourages capable, caring horsemanship. Illustrations and photos are nicely balanced with text, rich in history of the Arabian horse, foundation bloodlines, proper conformation, tips on grooming, feed, trailering, showing, behaviour, selecting veterinarians, and much, much more.

2 comments about The Tao Of Horses: Exploring How Horses Guide Us on Our Spiritual Path (Tao of).
- While I appreciate the theories set forth in the book, I struggled reading it and found myself putting it down several times in frustration. The principles are good principles, as mentioned in the previous review, however, I felt the book had too much emphasis on superficial things (i.e. money) to truly be a guide to our spiritual path. Although I can see the benefit of interviewing famous jockeys and horse stuntmen, I feel Mccall could have driven her point home better if she interviewed and discussed experiences of the average person and their horses.
- Compiling thoughts and insights from today's legendary horsemen and women, McCall creates a tapestry of emotion surrounding my favorite animal, the horse. Each chapter takes a specific thought such as harmony or power or communication and then brings in the words of people who work with horses in those capacities. From legendary jockeys to people who run equestrian programs for children, each chapter provides much food for thought. At the end of each chapter are exercises for the reader to do as well as links providing additional information. This makes The Tao of Horses much more than a book on equine spirituality, but also it's a book full of resources.
The book can be read straight through or simply picking a chapter and focusing on the thoughts held therein. I found the book to be interesting. It made me look at my own relationship with my horse in a more meaningful way, as well as made me think about applying these principles in my own life. The Tao of Horses isn't just a book, it's a way to change your life and for the better.

4 comments about Second Start: Creative Rehoming for Dogs.
- Having worked in dog rescue for 10 years and fostered over 70 dogs in the past year I can say without reservation that this is the best dog book ever for someone in rescue work OR for someone looking to adopt a dog. It covers everything you will ever need to know from why you want a dog, the type of dog that is right for you, how to choose a dog, how to test its' temperment, it even has 50 mutilple choice questions to help you find the type of dog for your lifestyle. It covers basic health, types of dog groups and the training section is fabulous. The book is an easy read and very down to earth. I am going to recommend this book be the official book for my rescue league for recommended reading. Great job!!
- A great book to help a new dog owner know what to expect in training and raising an adopted dog of any age. Straightforward, easy to read, and honest-but with a positive approach! The lists can be a bit tedious at the beginning-and I felt would be better suited to complete AFTER reading the book. Overall-a great book for all members of the family to read!
- This book tops everything I have read to date about rescue/rehome dogs. The test to match a breed with the owner's life style is of paramount importance and is placed early in the book. I especially like the sections on how to prepare for a rescue dog, and on the adjustment period. These two very important aspects can be the making or breaking of a long-term relationship. The stories of rescue dogs and the pictures are heartwarming. The training information, so necessary for most rescue dogs, is easily read and understandable. I now recommend this book to everyone who comes to me for a rescue dog.
- I loved this book! I have had two second hand dogs, and right now I'm having problems with one of them. This book is helping to train my nine year-old Cocker Spaniel (I don't think anyone ever trained him before). There is even a thorough quiz on what type of dog you want, to ensure a perfect match. In planning for my next adult dog, I took the quiz and ended up deciding the best breed for me was a Doberman Pinscher. I was SO happy to find out that one of my favorite breeds was the best one for me! This is definitely a wonderful book for novice or experienced owners! Plus, there's great advice on introducing your dog to other pets, finding the best source for your dog, and a listing of dog sports to participate in! And if you love guard dogs, there's plenty of pictures of mastiffs, rottweilers, and even a few of the beloved Doberman. Enjoy your dog, and this book as well!
