5 comments about You Can Save the Animals: 251 Simple Ways to Stop Thoughtless Cruelty.
- Non factual at best and a sensationalist diatribe about the evils of meat eaters and people who use animals and actually think that humans should be above animals on this ever shrinking planet. If you believe this book, wear leather or buy anything or use electricity or oil. You are a hypocrite.
- This book is ok. It has a lot of great websites and rescue orginizations. I would buy it more for the references than the writing.
- Newkirk did the homwork, you just put her simple, excellent ideas into practice. That's it really. And, she lists these wonderful ideas in a non-threatening manner, so it's just a matter of using the ideas that you are comfortable with.
- This amazing book begins with a chapter entitled "Who are animals?". In this chapter and throughout the book, Newkirk relates many beautiful stories that challenge our assumptions about animals' intelligence, emotions and experience of life. For readers who feel overwhelmed by the amount of cruelty in the world, Newkirk (the author) suggests simple actions we can all take to help animals. These include rescue of stray animals, purchasing cruelty-free products, adopting animals from shelters, and much more. Overall, this book is a good introduction to animal issues and will benefit anyone who has ever asked, "What can I do?"
- This book should be mandatory reading for everyone. It's easy to ignore the suffering of others (animals in this case, but this goes for people too) if you can tell yourself that you don't know about it, but once you're confronted with facts _and_ with a vast range of options to make a positive change, then the choice, and the responsibility, is yours.
Knowing that millions of animals are killed in shelters every year, will you put off spaying/neutering your pet? Once you're aware of the horrific fur farming practices, will you knowingly decide to put vanity ahead of the animals' welfare and choose a mink coat instead of an equally attractive and warm coat made of man-made materials? This book is listed as out of print, but you can still buy it used here on amazon, or new directly from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) at www.peta.org

1 comments about The Simple Guide to Puppies (Simple Guide to...).
- I've had dogs for over 20 years, but still use this book as a "refresher." It covers everything you need to know about bringing home a puppy -- choosing, preparing, feeding, health, grooming, even first aid. Also has some great basic training. All in an easy-to-read, visually-pleasing format. (Look into Andrea Arden's books for more training guidance!)

3 comments about Live Foods for Aquarium Fishes (Practical Fishkeeping).
- I felt that this book was ,altogether, too basic. It discussed only the most coomon food sources for a hobbyist. I was left wanting for more. It is a very small, very limited resource. It does discuss how to culture a few types of live foods, but I have found the same information in several other aquarium books, in their fish food sections. Your better off buying an aquarium encyclopedia, with a section on live foods.
- This small book was full of information for tropical fish keepers that desire to know more about feeding live foods.
- This is the better of my two Practical Fishkeeping books. This book is also 64 pages, but doesn't need anymore. It discusses ways of gathering and/or culturing all the various live foods, including white worms, grindal worms, microworms, brine shrimp, infusoria, daphnia, bloodworms, gnat larvae, gammarus, and earthworms. It has very specific recipes for culturing some of these live foods, and it also helps you to plan a "menu" for your particular fish based on its needs by explaining the nutritional pros and cons of each of the live foods. For example, it states that you shouldn't feed adult fish microworms too heavily because they are very fatty, instead, you want to feed them to your young fry or your pregnant mother fish which require the additional fat.

5 comments about Laboratory Medicine: Avian and Exotic Pets.
- This is an excellent book, but is more advanced than I, as an animal rehabber, can use. Our members with a nursing, microbiology background really like it.
- I'm very satisfied with my item; I'm very happy to have bought from amazon because it was very fast in sending and the item was very neat
- This is an excellent, excellent reference. It is a "must have" lab guide for anyone who treats birds. It provides state of the art information on Avian Laboratory tests and their interpretation.
It is also very good for as a reference for exotic species. There are a number of other contributers to various sections in this book. They are all well known experts in their field. In this every changing world, this book provides leading edge information.
- This book provides a solid reference on common clinicopathological features of Birds, Reptiles, rabbits and ferrets, although the title misleads us to believe that other popular exotic species would be covered. The avian section is pretty comparable to other sources, but the reptile section is very unique to this book. The reptile section could benefit from more specific chapters on more diseases, as opposed to only the "LIVER AND GI" (which is mostly liver), Renal and Reproductive. In order for this info to be useful, one has to use the book after having an index of suspicion of a certain disease process and see if the data fits the book's discussions (as opposed to being able to look up differentials for certain enzyme elevations).
Section 3, on ferrets and rabbits, is also very comparable to other published books. I reccommend this book as an adjunct to others in your private library, but not as the sole source of information on this subject.
- Because is a good book about avian and exotic pets

1 comments about Ultimate Dog Care: A Complete Veterinary Guide (For Dummies (Pets)).
- I had never seen this book and bought it blind on marketplace and all I can say is WOW! I wish I would have bought it sooner!!
It contains 12 chapters
~The wolfs descent
~The healthy dog
~Feeding and nutrition
~Canine structure
~Life support systmes
~The respiratoty systam
~The dogs world
~The skin
~The next generation
~The question of inheritance
~The Canine athlete
~Alternative approaches
Each chapter is very detailed with many drawings and photos of a healthy dog and problems that can arise. This book has a good section on first aid and a supply list for your kit and advice on what to do at home on while in route to the vet. Detailed instructions on bandaging variuos parts of the body and the easiest way to give medicines (liquid, pill, topical)
Chapter on how to elvuate your dogs food and what each part of the digestive system does. Also, what each ingredent in food does for your dog at diffent stages in his life (puppy, adult, senior).
Skeletal chapter very detailed showing normal bones and also problems in the bones and muscles. Detailed on many diesases that plague the bones with the appropate treatment listed.
Has a chapter devoted to the senses of the dogs and how problems in each sense affect the dog. Also covers behavioral problems in this chapter with ways to correct each problem.
Breeding chapter discusses pros and cons of breeding, spaying and neutering, natural breeding, artifical inseminaltion (very small section), ways to confirm pregnancy, whelping and complications.
Genetics chapter is a little more complicated, but has diagrams to help. Also has a chart of genetic defects in the dog and the mode of inheritance and age of onset.
Exercise chapter is a good outline for anyone with a sporting dog. (I have chi's so I didn't get much use from this one)
The book ends with alternative approaches showing different ways to deal with common problems. I have no idea if these work, but several vets wrote this book, so I assume it's pretty safe to say that they can't hurt, however in any medical emergency the only thing to do is rush to the vet, these are just suggestions which readers may find helpful for supportive therpy for non-life threatening problems.
Overall I rate this book very highly in my canine library. True, it is not the Mereck Vet Handbook, but for the average owner it is a great book with many photos and clear cut info.

5 comments about Great Danes: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, Behavior, and Training With 46 Color Photos (A Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- Great book for the price. A little high in shipping using Media Mail though.
- I found this book extremely helpful it cover just about everything. I strongly recomend it.
- I think this is an excellent book for an overview of Great Danes and the considerations in deciding to own one. Making the decision to get a giant breed is a big one and this book is great for considering all that comes along with that. I would say it's better for people to read BEFORE deciding whether to buy a Great Dane to prepare and make sure you're up for all that's involved, but as far as a complete book for a Great Dane owner, I would recommend getting a book that has more specifics on the various topics rather than just an overview. This is NOT a one and only book for the Great Dane owner.
- A good, easy to read overview of the Great Dane. Enjoyed it. Helped me prepare for being a first time Dane owner, and left me with a very good idea of what to expect.
- This was pretty good and i will use it as a reference, but i was a little frustrated with the book. Throughout almost the entire middle section instead of answering very important questions on the topic of the chapter, he would just say "check with your great dane mentor for information on...." - feeding, bloat, purchasing, etc, etc etc. I got this book to get this guys opinion not for him to tell me to check with someone else. I did think that the sections on training were good.
