1 comments about American Water Spaniel (Comprehensive Owners Guide).
- Good history and background on the breed, but it would have been helpful to have more specific information. For example the need to deter heavy barking is mentioned, but no suggestions are offered on how to do this. This breed also tends to be sensitive, with highly honed training instincts, so information on what training techniques work best would be useful.

5 comments about What My Dog Has Taught Me About Life: Meditations for Dog Lovers.
- I first discovered this book about 8 years ago. At that time, I purchased several copies and quickly gave them to my closest dog-lover friends. Since then, I have given this book to three friends upon the loss of their dog. I am so impressed with this book because of the content and the format. It not only sheds new light on the faithfulness and simple inner beauty of dogs, but causes one to contemplate one's own inner self. It provides both humor and comfort. It is such a poignant book that it will touch anyone who values their dog, whether the reader is a Christian (as is the author) or not. Two of the people I gave this book to were not Christians and absolutely loved reading and receiving it. It is easy to read, and will be read repeatedly over time by any owner. What My Dog Has Taught Me About Life: Meditations for Dog Lovers
- I began reading this before bed one night and couldn't stop...this book is riveting! Dog and animal lovers NEED this book. The incredibly heartwarming and powerful short stories read like devotionals. If you have ever given your heart to a dog, you really must buy a copy of this book and have a box of tissues ready when you begin reading. You will most certainly learn or recall life lessons too valuable to forget.
- A few minutes ago, I finished Mr. Stanley's book. I had wondered if there were others who learned from those special dogs who are insightful, attentive, intelligent and totally devoted. Obviously, Gary Stanley is one of those, and he communicates so well the blessings of sharing life with another of God's creatures.
- My mother is a friend of the author, and for a while in 1999, she took care of "Griffin", one of the dogs described in this book. She talked often about his remarkable face and demeanor, and raved about Mr. Stanley's stories. Twice now I have been amazed at how right she is-- Griffin is an amazing dog-- he can look at you in a way that almost goes through you. And then to see that translated into these short stories is just amazing. "The Dog Who Walk Himself" has much to teach us, even though he probably doesn't know he's doing it. As this book shows us, God has many ways of teaching us His lessons. I think even my cat-loving self can agree with that!
- I just finished reading this book and discovered an abundance of chuckles and many insights about my own life.

3 comments about Prince and Other Dogs II.
- Libby Hall's second volume of elderly photos of dogs and their humans is another winner. Hall, who has always lived with dogs, has a wonderful sense of a good photo, both in its composition and in its subject matter. These black and white photos are charming, sometimes funny, sometimes sad; they all capture the great love and friendship possible between canines and humans. With no captions, these photos tell stories on their own. I especially loved the series of photos of a human giving some sort of order to a dog (generally for a treat of some kind), while the dog watches and listens intently. This book would be a wonderful addition to anyone's dog and/or photo book library.
- Prince and Other Dogs 2 is another tasteful labor of love from Libby Hall and should, as did P1, please cynophiles as well as lovers and collectors of antique photographs. An especially delightful feature of this latest volume is the pages upon pages of lovely Victorian and Edwardian children, preserved forever in dignified poses with their beloved pets. Moreover, as the owner of a spunky Jack Russell Terrier, I can once again report that Ms. Hall has given the JRT crowd another bounteous offering: by my rough count, P2's canine companions are roughly 25 percent JRTs, pure or in part. (Perhaps one of these is a long lost ancestor to my own - her sire, after all, was a Brit.)
P2 is a carefully produced companion volume of its predecessor, printed on the same high-quality paper and, as a duodecimo volume (c. 4.5" x 7"), fitting beautifully in the hand, with a nice heft that befits its quality manufacture. We keep both books out - near the First Folio facsimile - for friends to flip through. Everyone is quickly drawn to a favorite photo of dog or master. P2 is bargain priced and just in time for the holidays. Buy in quantity!
- The book is a collection of old photographs of dogs and their owners, no text. Looking through the photos makes me smile and reminds me of the dogs who have brought joy to my life over the years. These dogs must have also brought great joy to their owner's lives to have been included in these family photos. After all, these pictures were taken long before the days of disposable cameras and 1-hour photo developing. This book (and the first book "Prince and Others") would make a wonderful gift for any dog lover.(Note: both books are the perfect size for stocking stuffers)

2 comments about A History of Dogs in the Early Americas.
- Wonderfully researched, Marion Schwartz's book, A History of Dogs in the Early Americas, examines the relationship between dog and master in the pre-Columbian period. Following an anthropologic approach, the book is primarily concerned with dogs as beasts of burden, dogs in cosmology, and dogs as gastronomic delicacy.
Schwartz's text surveys prehistoric archaeology in the Americas, noting occurrences of dogs as grave goods. Schwartz also draws on the accounts of colonial period missionaries and chroniclers who accompanied de Soto and Cortés. Schwartz's scope is overly broad and leaves the reader with repetitious gloss and little interpretation; a more thorough discussion of each early American societies' significance and worldview would lend a deeper understanding of the place of dogs within the culture.
This book may be of interest to the backyard archaeologist; however, its lack of depth and poor organization make it of little use to the serious scholar. Given the book's wholistic nature, it is likely to alienate the general, dog-loving reader.
- This is another boonie dog book review by Wolfie and Kansas. "A History of Dogs in the Early Americas" is an anthropological survey by Marion Schwartz, a research assistant at Yale. Despite numerous illustrations, this book is written more for academics than for dog lovers. One chapter, entitled "The Edible Dog", is particularly frightening.
Other portions of this book, such as the sections noting the key roles played by dogs in creation myths, are inspirational. On the whole, though, the sections on dogs as cuisine and dogs as ritual sacrifices leave us with the perhaps politically incorrect impression that, puppy mills and leash laws notwithstanding, the Conquest did more good than harm for caninekind.

5 comments about Poison Frogs of the Family Dendrobatidae: Jewels of the Rainforest.
- Awesome book! Anybody that collects frogs or is even the slightest bit interested in learning about them should get this book. Full of wonderful info and the pics are fantastic!! Worth the money!
- I have been wanting this book since I started raising dart frogs. The pictures are incredible! It is a well done overview of the Dendrobatidae family of dart frogs. It contains many interesting breed habits and rainforest facts. The price was right for my purchase here on Amazon.
I highly recommend this book for any dart frog hobbyist.
- This is a large, expensive book with beautiful photographs. It was written too long ago to be of any serious use to folks keeping Dendrobatids. Care information is paltry and the taxonomy is (now) inaccurate. Some photos are misidentified (The "*Epipedobates femoralis*" on pg. 230 is *Lithodytes lineatus*- not even a Dendrobatid!) My largest concern is that it has no information or insight into the rampant smuggling/habitat destruction that is currently a major concern of Poison frog keepers. Some of the frogs photographed (including one on the cover!) are injured or sick. There are photographs that amount to advertisements printed in the book.
This said, the photos are very nice, and there are an abundance of photos of species not commonly available in the hobby. The large format makes it ideal to showcase just how beautiful the frogs are.
- Wonderful book with beautiful picture.Even if you don't have anything with frogs I think you will have something with frogs after looking through this book.
- Great book with great color photos. Very detailed information and maps. Care information. An all round good reference....the only knock being...it's a little too large.....but not a bad price/value for it's size on the other hand. If you are interesting in keeping PDF's then this is a must have...a wealth of information!

1 comments about Puppy Parenting.
- I liked this book because it talks about different methods you can use to solve problems, and it also talks about puppy behavior so you know what to expect and why your puppy acts the way he does. I learned a lot from reading this book and was able to correct several problems I was having with my new pup.

4 comments about Taming and Training Cockatoos.
- This is a well written book for the beginner Cockatoo owner. It has a lot of information that is important to know. Cockatoos are very different from the Macaws that I already own....which came as a surprise to me. I have not yet purchased a baby Cockatoo.....and after reading this book, I am not sure they are the bird for me. Just like I prefer Mules to horses.....and they are very different from eachother. If you are considering a Cockatoo......this is great reading. Enjoy!
- This book don't have much on how to train your bird.It only tell you a few starter points if your bird is wild. Mostly has pictures of different type of cockatoos and telling about them, It also has about clipping wings and nails. If you want the basic of two steps in tamining and training this is the book for you. Too me the title don't go with this book !!
- This book is a big waste of money! Personaly, I'm VERY supprised anyone published it! It doesn't tell you anything but what you already know from common sense, and it is extreamly repetive. It seems like the author didn't have enough things to say so she repeated herself so the book would be longer. Please don't waste your money on it!
- Although it seemed that the photographer favored the Palm Cockatoo, all of the pictures were excellent. As to the rest of the book, I was very discourraged. There was only a short and very concise section at the end of the book that delt with "Taming and Training Cockatoos."
