5 comments about Making Friends: Training Your Dog Positively.

  1. This is a great book. I highly recomend it to any dog owner. It is a great way to help understand your dog and a great tool in training. We now refer to it as our dogs hand book!! Great read and it helped so much!

  2. I found the ifnormation in this book to be very general. It seems the tried to cram a lot of information in this book however, all the information is just a breif summary. While there were a few good tips to use in the book, I found the training advice to be way too breif. This book would have been a lot better if they would have been more detailed about the training and cut out some other information that just made the book seem cluttered and unfocused.

  3. Of all the dog training books I have ever read-- this one is my favorite--
it's the book I recommend most to anyone who is getting a new dog-- It is extremely well written with excellent advice, easy to follow training methods- In her book she not only teaches owners how to train their dog -- but how to understand how your dog thinks and learns, and why dogs do the things they do. I followed her instructions for teaching my puppy to sit, stay, and also house training and it made training my puppy easy and fun for the both of us. On top of all that- the book is full of entertaining stories about people and their dogs (so its fun reading her book). I can't say enough good things about her book. Anyone who has a dog should read it! (by the way: another person on this site wrote a review of linda's book and said it had typical advice about choke train methods- who ever wrote that must be confusing Making Friends with another book- because Linda Colflesh's book argues against choke chain methods of training- so someone should take that review off the site- the person who wrote it didnt read the book.

  4. This seems in general a very sensibly written dog training book. The commands given are pretty standard, and the instructions are clear and logical. My only real gripe is that the title implies positive training, which this is not. This book teaches very traditional training, with leash corrections and other such, not the positive training method espoused by Karen Pryor (Don't Shoot the Dog). The author does place a welcome emphasis on not punishing your dog for what he doesn't yet understand, and on praising and rewarding good behavior, but positive training is a method, not an attitude. Adding more praise to traditional training gives you a kinder gentler traditional training, not positive training.

That said, if you're more comfortable with traditional methods than with click and treat, this is a good book to work from.

  5. Hi Linda! This is so ironic, I recently purchased a White Alaskan Eskimo and I borrowed your book from a friend of mine not knowing that you were the author. Well I read it and I think it is going to be quite helpful while raising this little monster. You should see him, I could not resist. Well, again the book was and is super! Won't bore you. Drop me a line at Taurkus@aol.com. That would be nice. G-

5 comments about The Small Dogs Doggy Bone Cookbook: The Fun, Easy Way to Bake Love and Nutrition into Your Dog's Diet.

  1. This book provides a fun and easy way to bake love and nutrition into your dog's diet. My wife works as a pet advisor through www.letspawty.com and recommends this book to her clients. It allows people to save money on treats by making their own and dog owners get the all-important advantage of knowing what is going into their dog's treats. Natural, no preservatives, no chemicals. The treats are extremely easy to make and take just minutes. Comes with a bone-shaped cookie cutter. Pawsitively delicious!

  2. Give them this book, and the dogs will be drooling! We use this book constantly for our own dog, and his friends! Recipes are easy, not one dog has complained yet! I do taste test the treats, and wow, very edible and delicious. Any dog would be so lucky to have a human in their life with this book!

  3. I really enjoy making the recipes in this book and my dog really enjoys eating them (as do the dogs in his obedience class). I have only two issues with the book. First, I don't think that the batch sizes were changed from the original book to accomodate the smaller bone cookie cutter size, because I always end up with many more treats than it says I should have (not that my dog is complaining). Also, there are no recipes for dogs who have corn and wheat allergies as all call for either corn or wheat flour although I'm sure with a little work you could substitute oat or rice flour. All in all a fun and creative book!

  4. Although "The Doggy Bone Cookbook" is small, it is jam-packed with quick, easy to make recipes for natural dog biscuits that are sure to please even the most fussiest canine palettes! It even comes with a cute plastic doggy bone cookie cutter. I have already made four surefire hits from this book - Cinnabone, Pea-mutt Butter, Garlicky and Cheese, and Bark-B-Que, and my one-year-old Keeshond gobbles them right up. The ten recipes are easy and quick to assemble (making them quite appropriate for children to make!) and require minimal healthy ingredients for maximum taste. The book also includes helpful tips such as how to cook the biscuits to just the right consistency (something I had had problems with in the past). If you enjoying cooking, and care about feeding your dog foods and treats that contain natural ingredients (with no chemicals, food dyes or preservants), then this book is perfect for you!

  5. What's in store bought dog biscuits? Who knows? No more guessing as we're able to make our own and know just what we're eating. Fun to make and fun to eat.

5 comments about Choosing a Dog for Life (Well Mannered Dog).

  1. This is a great dog breed book! Not only are the pictures wonderful (excellent speciments of each breed), but I love the information and history offered on each breed. A summary of the breed standard is included, as well as, temperment and level of activity, potential health problems, and growth information on each breed. I have looked at many breed books and this is my absolute favorite.

  2. This book was really disappointing. Over the last 15 years, our family has owned an Irish Setter, Lab, and Standard Poodle. We bought several books to start researching other breeds prior to beginning a search for a new dog. In the preface of this book, it says that the authors of the book have surveyed breeders and owners of the breeds and they trust that the contributors have been candid and realistic. Well they weren't. Do you think the breeders and owners might have been a little partial to their respective breeds??? Much of the information was sugar coated. "Paws to Consider" by Kilcommons and Wilson is a much more objective book. It is based on the authors 45 years of combined experience as dog trainers.

  3. I have several dog books, but this is my favorite. It has lots of wonderful color pictures of the dogs, and detailed information on each breed. An excellent book for dog lovers, as well as an exceptional refrence for anyone researching dog breeds for themselves.

  5. This book has alot of information about each breed but not alot of general dog information. Thats what I liked about it. It has alot of breeds listed, with 4 of 5 photos of each one. It describes the AKC standard, health problems, and characteristics of each breed. A great coffee table book for dog lovers.

2 comments about The Canary: An Owner's Guide toa Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. Diane Grindol has written another useful and interesting book for the bird owner's library - THE CANARY. This little book is a good basic volume with diet, grooming and other health care tips including a section on various ailments such as mites, cysts, and canary pox. In various sidebar sections Grindol includes a recipe for pellet muffins, the benefits of formulated diets and and how to turn seeds into nutritious treats by sprouting them. Her sections on cages and cage supplies, as well as perch choices are probably cover some of the most important aspects of canary ownership. Apparently, canaries can become ill if they sit on the same sized perches all day.

I did not find this book any more useful than the Barron's handbooks on canaries although it does include a few different features. My book is a hardback and will probably last longer than the books with paper covers. This book includes many charming photos as do the other books I purchased - however, two of them show a canary with a Siamese cat, which made me wonder about the advisability of letting a cat so near a canary, even for a photo op. The book includes a description of the most common canary, the `German Roller' which apparently has the most beautiful song. A useful feature of this book is the list of Internet sites you can visit if you really want to investigate canaries in detail.

  2. This is a great book for any canary lover. Before I read this book I did not know much about this animal other than seeing him getting chased by Sylvester. Diane writes wonderfully, you will be through with the book before you know it! Clearly an expert in the field, her love for these birds is obvious as you read this book. Whether you own a canary now, or are just thinking about getting one, you must get this book!

1 comments about The Homoeopathic Treatment of Small Animals: Principles and Practice.

  1. This book is packed with information about the principles & practice of homeopathy as well as highly specific information about symptoms & potential homeopathic remedies. While it is tempting to do so - the book is not intended to be used as a "how to" manual where you can look up a symptom & apply the remedy.

3 comments about Fitness Unleashed!: A Dog and Owner's Guide to Losing Weight and Gaining Health Together.

  1. The book I got shows it was a freebie from Hill's, but I assume it's just like the one pictured. I found it to be very basic with not much in the way of new information. This would be fine with someone who needed some ideas about starting a fitness program for him or herself and/or to add the family dog to the fitness program.

  2. This book was informative and easy to follow. There were many helpful ideas and programs for all levels of fitness. It was easy to read and had references that were very useful. An easy and inexpensive way to get in shape.

  3. After reading the book, I feel empowered to start a new life that focuses on really becoming the best I can be. Having my dog involved in the process even further fuels my push to get into shape. The book includes personality test and diet tips as well as fitness tips for getting into shape. By working out with my pet, I found not only a greater motivation to work out, but I actually found my fitness routine go from blah to vibrant. I highly recommend this book for any pet lover looking for a life change of fitness and health.

5 comments about Well-Shod: A Horseshoeing Guide for Owners and Farriers.

  1. Overall this is a good book but it not quite the step by step guide I was looking for regarding trimming of hooves. It is the best of two so far compared to Krolick's book which didn't help at all. Has a fair number of black & white pictures and explains the basics. B & W pictures are hard to compare to a live hoof. I've been around horses for years and worked with farriers. I want to do my own trimming. If I ever needed any shoeing, I would hire that done anyway. This book really reinforces what I know and helps to tell me partially but not completely when you can go too far on trimming such as how much hoof wall, sole, and frog can you safely cut before you have cut too much. It only has one chapter on trimming. I may get this other pictorial guide book I saw listed. I'm not sure anyone would want to take any book and try to start shoeing without some instruction by someone that knows. If I did ever want to do some shoeing on a horse that doesn't have problems, this book probably has enough information from me to do it though. Same for trimming. I may try a conservative trim this weekend.

  2. I had some knowledge on how to trim my horses feet. The book gave me more detail and insights I wasn't aware of. I would recommend this book to anyone.

  3. The best book I've seen on the subject. It is informative, easy to understand (for the layman) and without pretensions.
Expert advice from an expert practioner.

  4. Recently I watched as a local farrier plied his trade with four horses belonging to a friend. Originally I had gone intending to help steady the horses but, as I watched, I became more and more intrigued with the processes that were unfolding before my eyes. Suddenly I found myself wishing that I had paid better attention.

The following day I began my search for a book that would review for me the things that I had witnessed the previous day. My first reaction was discouragement as I, at first, found very little available and then found some excellent books but priced so high that I would have had to hock the farm to buy them. Even my local library fell short.

At last I ran onto this book. WELL-SHOD provides everything I was looking for. There are no lengthy and complicated explorations of unnecessary horse anatomy or boring historical treatises on the evolution of the horseshoe or the process of fitting sets of shoes to horses. Instead you will find excellent explanations of the process including removing old, worn shoes, preparing and trimming hooves and finishing up. The book also provides an excellent look at the necessary tools and how to use them, along with photographic and graphic illustrations that clarify the process.

Don't get me wrong. If I were interested in becoming a veterinarian or in working in or teaching comprehensive levels of hot and cold farrier work I would likely invest in the text-like books that I encountered and shell out the exorbitant dollars required for their purchase. But, having a goal to become proficient in taking care of a horse's hooves--from getting rid of old shoes and applying new ones--I think I'll stick with this one and be happy that I did.

    THE HORSEMAN

  5. This was an outstanding book! Mr. Baskins relies on his MANY years of experience to guide you on properly caring for your horse's hooves and how to ensure that your farrier is properly shodding your horse. I was completely ignorant of what was required to properly shod a horse....that is, until I picked up this wonderful book. I would recommend it as a foundation book for any good horse "person's" library. Even an experienced farrier could pick up vital techniques to assist him/her in shodding the most difficult horse, WITHOUT threatening, bullying or harming this beautiful creature!
