5 comments about How to Massage Your Cat.

  1. A quick read, and very funny, if you have the right sense of humor. There is no real cruelty to animals being portrayed in this book, and the nonplussed look of the cat through the entire thing is priceless.

  2. I like this book and it's very funny, but the title is misleading. It's a collection of tongue-in-cheek illustrations, but not only do they not teach you how to massage your cat, they would actually be physically damaging (like "pull your cat's arms out to the side and give a sharp tug"). I could recommend the book, but buy it ONLY as a joke, and then also buy one of the many other books on the market that really do teach you how to massage your cat.

  3. I first got this book about 30 years ago, when I was a teenager. It made me laugh so hard then that it brought me to tears. Every few years I pull it out to share with someone and it STILL makes me cry with laughter. I'm sorry to find that some people have the opposite reaction. To me, it's hard to understand. I love my cat and know this book isn't meant seriously. It's a deliciously ridiculous 'how-to'. I will always love it.

  4. I didn't find this book all that funny, but then, that's just me. I'm sure any potential buyer can get the gist of what the book's about from reading these reviews, so if this sounds like it's up your alley then go for it.

I do think it's silly to claim anyone who doesn't like this book is an idiot. The images do depict an animal being hurt - certain people will never like seeing pictures of that, even if they know it's a joke. So some people are turned off by violent images in general and others don't mind as long as it's all clearly in absurd good fun - that doesn't mean one group has no sense of humor, or that those who are not bothered by the images can't enjoy the book.

  5. My family owned this book 25 years ago and I thought it would be out of print... everyone loves it, from kids to elders.

5 comments about Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage: Facilities Design and Management.

  1. If you are setting up a ranch for the first time on 2 acres or more, this is the book for you. Very informative with diagrams and in depth explanations that will assist you in setting up your acreage the right way, even if you have never done anything like this before!

  2. A good background on setting up a horse property. Not everyone has the acreage they use in the book but you can glean a lot from it.

  3. This book was packed with great information on horse facilities but it was not the information I needed. I was looking for a book on managing a truly small horse property (mine is 4/5s of an acre) so I have to agree with those who comment that the "small acreages" in this book are not small at all, especially not to someone in Califonia. An acre here is considered "horse property" since most Californians owning much more land than that are probably millionaires (unless in the desert.) True, there was a plan or two that could work on an acre but the info I truly needed, info unique to such a small area, was not in this book. We Californians need advice on how to manage manure in a small area with neighbors on all sides and what about the turnout area, which obviously is not going to support the growth of any grasses. The barns and buildings in the book are way too large and extravagent for the average small horse property here. There are many problems unique to truly small horse properties but this book doesn't really address them.

  4. This book goes over basically every detail that I can think of that would help to begin a horse farm or just having one horse. It covers everything from buying land, thinking about the neighbors to drainage and barns. Cherry covers it all in detail and it is very well explained. If you get one book on this topic this should be it!

  5. Even if you already have a barn orr board your horses somewhere, this is a great book to read. There is information about how horse behaviour affects taking care of them, and tons of information about stable management. There are many helpful charts comparing types of stall floorings, etc. In response to a previous reviewer's comment that there are not any plans for an acre of half acre of land, that is incorrect. There is a sample layout, where the pastures are, where the house is, where the barn is, for a a 1/2 acre piece of land, and one for a 1-acre pice of land on pages 72 and 73. There is tons of information on land, fencing, equipment, care, etc.

  1. This is a basic book on border collies with brief coverage of most of the usual topics. There are large color pictures on nearly every page, and they are cute, but the coverage is somewhat brief.

5 comments about 101 Uses for a Golden.

  1. As an owner of 2 Golden Retrievers lost due to old age I found this book to bring great joy when given to me as a gift. So, I purchased it as a gift for my brother when his Retriever died due to illness. After several months they purchased a new Golden and treasure this little book as I do.

  2. This book is humorous and cute- if you're looking for a book that will teach you about Goldens this isn't useful- but it has nice pictures with little captions underneath that will make you laugh. I loved it!

Also, it is very small- only about 5 inches square and only about 60 pages- so don't expect a large book!

  3. Received the book in excellent condition and in a timely manner.
    Service couldn't have been better.

  4. This is a funny book for any golden owner!! It tells jobs goldens can do around the house that they really can!! Like my favorite is the "minor garment alterations" as my two goldens eat socks, shoes, scrunchies, towels and anything they can find!!! A book to remember and keep!!!

  5. I borrowed a copy of this book from our library system and found it to be touching and filled with humor. It brought back many fond memories of my old friend and our rich life together.

I plan to get a copy for my library and to give a couple to friends who also share a love for this breed.

2 comments about Mini-Aquariums.

  1. This is my first time writing a review but I was so diappointed I didn't want someone else to make the same mistake. Because this book is definitely not what I thought it was going to be! It is VERY basic! Good for only someone very very new to the hobby! The first four chapters are about basic fishkeeping (water quality, pH, filtration, sickness) and personally I have read it much better explained in other books. As the owner of 7 saltwater aquariums (125g,75g,29g,55g,46g,10g,2g) I was hoping for more info about saltwater, but I found that the book talked alot more about freshwater. I also had not expected to find info about lizards and frogs! Personally I wouldn't try setting up any tank using only the advice in this book (much less a nano tank!!!). If you are a saltwater aquarist interested in starting a nano tank read "The Nano-Reef Handbook". It is a very informative book that I reference all the time. In fact it has been helpful in caring for my larger aquariums too. Basically I think you shoundn't waste your money on this book! Wish there had been a review I could have read when I bought this book! Anyway happy fishkeeping!

  2. This is a great addition to my library of aquarium books. Although I can not condone squeezing any fish into a tank smaller than 10 gallons. These "Micro tanks", Would be great for a temporary display of plants only. Even small shrimp would be stressed in these small environments.

5 comments about Love of Labs: The Ultimate Tribute to Labrador Retrievers (Petlife Library).

  1. I had this book for sometime, it was a gift. I didn't really know what a great book I had until I actually read it. Looking at the pictures was great, until I lost my own Chocolate Lab, "Roxie". The memories she and I made, were flushed out as I read the happiness of other inspired Lab Lovers. I though no one else can love a dog as much as I loved mine. There are so many people blessed with Labs that don't realize what a gift a Lab is. They are the best all around dog, that I fell in love with at the age of 18 or so. Now 33 I'm searching for another Lab puppy to love again. This book allowed me to see the other stories, people shared and flushed stories from my own heart that had been forgotten as time has a way of covering the memories that are made in the life of a Lab, if only for a short while I have the memories of my Lab and others, uncovered.

  2. Here is another attractive entry by naturalist author Todd Berger, one that takes a truly loving look at America's singular and by far most popular wonder dog, the Labrador Retriever. As Berger points out so well, there are few other animals who draw such love from humans as a dog, and surely the Lab is the most loveable of the breeds. Here he presents the Labrador Retriever in all its wonder and does a yeoman service to the rest of us by enumerating all of the superb qualities the dog has to offer potential human enthusiasts. They are by reputation excellent working dogs, both as field dogs and as guide dogs for the disabled. They are also incredibly loyal, and the news services are often filled with wonderful and heartwarming stories of Labs crawling out on the ice to save their masters, often at considerable danger to themselves. Nonetheless, they stand by our sides.

Therefore, this book, "The Love Of Labs', is the ultimate tribute to the breed, and is chock-full with stories and photos that actively serve to substantiate what might otherwise seem as idle boasts and overethusiastic praise. In fact, for anyone who spends any time around Labs, like me, it is hard nto to use superlatives when describing them. More than one of the stories herein will bring a smile to your face, a tear to your eye, and the idea in your noggin perhaps it is time to consider getting one of these incredible creatures into you rlife, and that of your extended family. they boost the energy level in any room they enter, are incredible chick-magnets, and have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and dissipate depression through their mere presence. This is a wonderful book about what I believe to be the world's most nearly perfect living creature, the Labrador Retriever! Enjoy!

  3. This is a story book. The stories narrated in the book show the really nice characteristics of this excellent dogs. The photographs are beautiful. It's a nice tribute to the Labrador. Only downside is that all, and I do mean all, the stories are hunting stories. I believe these dogs have much more to say in other aspects of life. For all of you who hunt with a Lab, you will really love this book. Those of you who don't hunt but are really fond to this breed, you will like it very much, myself included. For those of you looking for information on the breed, not recomended.

  4. I have only had the priviledge of owning our adopted black lab, Abbott (rescued by Southern California Labrador Retriever Rescue) for about 4 months. I can not tell you how incredible these dogs are!! The family loyalty is palpable. The intense devotion these dogs display to their family is remarkable. The absolute joy this dog has brought to us is a gift that is compounded daily. How can one really describe a lab's love for their family? (and the family for them) I was so happy to see a book that comes close to trying to express this.

Quite simply, the stories and pictures are beautiful. Share this book with anyone that loves these dogs for it is a pure delight just to turn the pages and look at the pictures! We feel so lucky to live with the real thing!

5 comments about Pet Crafts: 28 Great Toys, Gifts and Accessories for Your Favorite Dog or Cat.

  1. I've had this book a year or two now, and I finally got around to making something from it. I made the fleece, stuffed cat pictured on the book's cover. My sewing skills are extremely undeveloped, and even I found this project to be fairly simple. Better yet, it turned out really well! I hope to try out more of the projects in the future.

  2. I just received this today and I love it! There are some really great ideas for crafts for the pet lover in everyone! I haven't done any of these yet, but I have some really great ideas to expand on the crafts in this book! The book is well written and the step by step directions are so easy that anyone will be able to do them...Get this book, you will be very pleased with it!

  3. I was looking for patterns to help me make winter clother for my dog. I was able to get some ideas and helpful information with this book. But, it is not solely for dogs or dog clothing.

  4. There are cute items here for both cats and dogs. Great gift idea! I have not yet tried any of the projects so I cannot speak of the level of difficulty.

  5. This book is great!! it has very cute ideas. I have a dog and she loves the squeeky sock!! i also have 3 cats and they love the ceramic bowls. The pet beds are very practical for on the go people. You can just pull of the cover if it gets dirty and wash it.Also my cats love the springy snake you can just launch it across the room and watch them go after it. I highly recommend this book!!!

4 comments about Collie Concept.

  1. I have owned this book since it came out new....wish I'd bought two - one to read...one to save. My copy is so beaten up that it is a shame...but I actually have read it cover to cover thirty or more times. I read and re-read this one again and again. It is a great reference book, too. If you need to know it....it is here.

  2. I bought this book under the advise of other collie breeders some time ago. It was told to me that it was the bible of the Collie World. I have found that not only was that true but more.
Not only did it help with breeding but raising as well. This is a must for anyone getting into Collies for any reason. I give this 10X more stars then whats offered. You'll love it.

  3. It took me close to 3 years to track down this book. I finally got it, read it and by the way, enjoyed it. It contains basics (to me anyway) about colour inheritance, structure, history, health, and a little on grooming and showing. This book will stay in my kennel's bookshelf for a long time. (And no, I'm not a year old.)

  4. This is a wonderful and informative book. It is chock full of pictures of collies as early as the first known collie in the USA right through some of the more recent and important collies we know today. You will find advice on how to pick a collie puppy, and how to get it registered with AKC. There is information about common collie health problems as well as advice on how to train your collie. It really is the collie owners handbook.

5 comments about Talking with Horses.

  1. Talking with Horses As a first-time horse owner, I found this book to be quite useful if your goal is to create a partnership with your horse. Being an alpha rider means firmness, consistency, but most important generating enough trust so that when your horse is fearful, misbehaves, or acts in any non-calm manner, he/she is responsive to your commands thereby providing a safe environment for all. This book teaches, through many anecdotes, the nuances that are typically omitted from other horse books ... and are not evident even in the people who have ridden/owned horses for years. Some of Henry Blake's suggestions might be for the very advanced rider or very excitable horse. For an enjoyable and informative read, I heartily recommend Blake's book.

  2. This is the book you need if you have to deal with horses from the ground. There are many riding books, but few on how to get along with them. That's what this is about. Horses are quite willing to communicate with gestures, and this will teach you how to "talk horse".

  3. Not a bad book. He gets the point across about communicating with horses. Mr Blake a great trick of telling funny anecdotes to get his point across. I haven't had enough to do with horses to confirm the ESP thing yet.

  4. It was entertaining as well as informative. As a new horse owner I am glad it was the first book I read on the subject. Effective communication skills is a must wheather you are a first time or long time horse owner. It was very helpful to be educated on the psyche, and language of horses and to be given examples that just like people, horses each have their own individual personalities. Mr. Blake has had experience with a large number of horses over the years and has developed a reputation for his patience and handling of difficult horses....and reading about how much enjoyment he received from it was a real inspiration!

    Sherry and James Fannon

  5. Henry Blake's first book is wonderful. It is not only a retelling of personal experiences but full of practical advice as well. Blake has several useful suggestions for improving the relationship you have with your horse.
