5 comments about Help Your Dog Fight Cancer: An Overview Of Home Care Options.

  1. This book arms you with the information you need to know in order to be able to help your dog fight cancer. It tells you what to expect, so that you're not caught unaware about things that can and do happen to your dog with cancer.
    A Must!

  2. When my Siberian Husky got leukemia, I did not know what to do. Do we treat it? Is it the right thing to do? Will my dog suffer? Money was not an issue, I just wanted to do what was best for my dog. This book answered my questions and helped put my mind at ease, and we went on to treat my dog for her cancer. She lived another year and a half to age 13 (she died from an unrelated illness). She had a high quality of life, even while being treated for her cancer (her treatment was primarily oral chemo - yes, just pills! I put them in Pill Pockets and she thought she was getting extra treats!!), up until the last couple of weeks. I am indebted to Laurie - thank you for writing this book and giving us more time with our beloved Sheena. Her efforts in this book and The Magic Bullet Fund are nothing short of extraordinary. If your dog is diagnosed with cancer and you want to learn more, this book will help you become a more educated doggie parent.

  3. This book is full of insight, information and the love of a wonderful dog. It is written by the dog owner, who in not a vet. Therefore, the information comes from opinions and research of many professionals and trial and error of the owner/author. It was very helpful for us.

  4. after reading the book, I found it to be very informative and am hoping things work out for anyone who has a dog with this disease.

  5. A friend loaned me her copy of this book when my sister's dog was diagnosed with cancer. Now that I've read it, I'm buying my own copy to have as a ready reference. This book will not tell you how to treat your own dog; it will help you devise a plan which is appropriate for your own dog and your own personal situation. The author reviews all of the things you need to consider, and shares her own decision making process by telling Bullet's story. It's a good story, one you'll want to finish. Even if your dog is healthy, buy this book, read it now, and you'll be prepared if your dog, or a friend's dog is diagnosed with cancer.

5 comments about The Pug: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. This book has many topics, but barely touches on each one, only giving you a few lines for each topic. Definately not enough to get any kind of useful information from.
    Extremely disappointed with this book.

  2. An o.k. book with great pictures. The majority addresses dogs in general, not Pug specific issues, which is what I was looking for....

  3. This is a good book about pugs but here is the breakdown of the book. It has 158 pages total, 93 pages apply to pugs but the rest are generic for any dog. The book covers ancestry of the pug, behavior, where to get a pug, dealing with a new pug puppy/adult, feeding, grooming (coat, nose, ears, eyes and mouth) nails, general disease prevention, safety and exercise. The best part of the book is the grooming section though I would have to say that most of the other sections cover pugs rather marginally. I have found much more detailed information on web sites. I would say it is a great book for someone who is considering a pug as a pet and wants to know their history and general information, but for a new owner, I'd choose a more detailed guide to care for your pug.

  4. This book is nearly identical, text-wise, to "The Essential Pug". These are both good, but about half of the info is generic for any breed. I'd recommend "The Essential Pug" (which, interestingly enough, has no author listed). It's several dollars cheaper and the pictures are much better.

  5. I really like to receive o copy of the book in Spanis

5 comments about Born Free: A LIONESS OF TWO WORLDS.

  1. Born Free
    Joy Adamson
    1960
    ISBN: 0-375-71438-3
    196 pages

When Elsa's natural instincts soften, reality becomes harder and harder to face.
After a young lioness has been raised and transformed from fierce predator to loving house
cat by her owner Joy, the thought of releasing Elsa into the wild seems to be the greatest
challenge the two have had to face.
Born Free is a true story about a woman ,Joy, and a lioness ,Elsa. Joy's husband
was a game warden in Africa, so the two went on many safaris together. During one of these
safaris, they find three orphaned lion cubs and decide to raise and take care of them during
their cub life. The day finally arrives when the cubs are to be shipped to a European zoo,
and Joy just cannot part with the smallest cub, Elsa. Elsa stays with the two of them and
becomes part of the family for many months. Between all of the fun and
suspense, the truth of the matter finally reveals itself. Elsa, though removed of all the natural
instincts she needs to survive, must soon be permanently released into the wild.
Filled with laughter and excitement, Born Free is a terrific bittersweet adventure,
giving people the ability to learn about a miraculous breakthrough in human and animal
interaction. This book is a timeless classic that you can read again
    and again.

  2. Animals have always been a favorite topic of mine, but as a young person who just happened to find a copy of this book some 39 years ago, with the cover torn off, I consider it one of the great discoveries of my life. It was summertime, and I was headed to the 7th grade. I wasn't much of a reader until that momentous day. The story of Elsa and the Adamsons totally transported me to another place, and many wondrous adventures in Africa. Due much to this book, I now am a voracious reader. The story is heartwarming, and is the reason I insisted my 7th grade son read it for his current book report.

Whether you're 9 or 99, Elsa's antics and her loving bond with Joy and George will capture your heart. I guarantee it. And with Africa's Lion population dwindling to probably less than 30,000 today, I can't think of a more timely book, in honour of conserving their remaining habitat. Especially when one considers that Africa had over 100,000 Lions when I first read it.

  3. This book touched my heart, to actually realize how one woman could bome so close to animals that we look at and call beasts. The compassion that one woman had is enough to change they way you may think about how we live. And once you read this book, dont forget that it is a true story. After seeing what Joyce had done wither her love for animals, any dream can come true.

  4. This book is one of my favorites. This book tells you the story of a bond between a hunan and a lioness. This is a great book because it shows you a different side of wild animals and the way they live. When you read it, you will get the excitement as if you are along on the safari with them!

  5. My first introduction to the Born Free books when I was a child learning to read in school. And what a great introduction to reading it was. The story of Elsa and the Adamsons who saved her life as a cub along with her sisters and raised her brought me into a world of wanting to be there with all the animals and see Africa. This seemed to be treated more as a children's book in my time than an adult book. The idea of the book was to teach people the importance of environmental conservation awareness. The first book, tells Elsa's early life from a cub raised by Joy and George Adamson and their pet rock hyrax, Pati. Joy is Elsa's surrogate mom and with great pains to teach Elsa the skills to survive in the wild. With lots of work Joy did it with success that Elsa was capable of living in the wild again. They released her near her birthplace and hoping Elsa would find and connect with her pride-in which she did. There is the tragedy not long afterward I had read this amazing story that Elsa had died in the Kenya bush of disease. Something of life that I learned early in my life that it was reality in the wilds of Africa or anywhere for that matter. But the cycle of life lives on in Elsa's pride. Still another grim incident ended the lives of Joy and George Adamson. Both were found murdered.

Joy Adamson has left behind a legacy of these fascinating books that moves us to treat our world with respect and have a better understanding between human-animal relationship. Joy Adamson before her death had also written, 'Living Free: Elsa and her Cubs' and 'Forever Free: Elsa's Pride.' Her family extended even further across the grasslands of Africa as she tells about them in her other books, 'The Spotted Sphinx' (about Pippa the Cheetah), 'Pippa's Challenge,' 'Pippa: The Cheetah and her Cubs,' 'Queen of Shaba: The Story of an African Leopard,' and 'Friends of the Forest.' Joy Adamson's book 'Peoples of Kenya' reflects upon the life of the Kenyan people, her concern for the people welfare there and their struggles to make an existence in a harsh, beautiful land. If you want to know more about Joy Adamson read her autobiography, 'The Searching Spirit.'

1 comments about Greyhound: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. We bought this book, because we are looking for the perfect breed to join our household. So whenever we fancy a certain breed we like to get a book about it. This inexpensive little book gives an exellent first time greyhoundowner guidebook. Not only does it give you tips how to housetrain an ex-racer, but gives good and sound advise for training, feeding and dogcare in general. It gives examples, little stories and facts to make the read more intersting. Did you know that Bo Derek owned Greyhounds? Daniel Braun Stern' book made us read (and buy) several books about sighthounds and the adoption of retired racehounds.

You will need more indepth information later on, but if you get this book to make up your mind - in that case it is a very good book to buy!

3 comments about The Akita Today (Book of the Breed).

  1. This book is only good if you are interested in breeding the Akita not as a pet.

  2. This book was a great read and we now have been using it as a reference. This was not our first Akita, but after reading this book, I now understand our beloved pet from the past. Our new addition is just as wonderful! The Akita is a great breed.

  3. I have many Akita books in my reference library but truely wish I had this book when I first became involved in showing and raising Akitas. This book has wonderfully discript photos and dialogue to take you through the proper grooming and stacking of your dog for show. It's not a big book but it is chalk full of the best advice and information I've seen to date. It is easy to follow and to read; clear photos and desciptions for discribing breed faults and correct breed type - a must for new Akita puppy owners. I recommend this book to all my puppy clients.

3 comments about The Essential Pit Bull (Essential (Howell)).

  1. This review will be short and to the point...

I recently rescued a dog that is mostly Pit mixed with Chow Chow and Mastiff. This book was a great intro to the characteristics of Pit Bulls. I didn't know a whole lot about Pits, so this book was very helpful to me. If you are considering a Pit as a pet and have never had one and don't want to read a book the size of a dictionary...this is great!

  2. If you have the book 'The American Pit Bull Terrier' by Jacqueline O'Neil you will be very dissapointed with this book. The Essential Pit Bull is basically just a revision of the O'Neil APBT(American Pit Bull Terrier) book with different pictures and a tiny bit added(but mostly it's all just rearranged). The pictures are dissapointing too because they use the same people's dogs over and over again inside the same house. But if you do not have the APBT book by O'Neil and don't know if you want the Essential Pit Bull or the O'Neil APBT book just pick whichever one you like best(I like the one by O'Niel better myself, it's cuter) And if after your decision you decide to get a second Pit Bull book I reccomend Pit Bulls for Dummies(I don't know if this site sells it but Pets Mart does)it's my 5th Pit Bull book I'm reading and it's great (and funny). And if you just must get another Pit Bull book 'American Pit Bull Terriers/American Staffordshire Terriers' by Joe Stahlkuppe is a nice and even has beautiful drawings.

  3. If you have just purchased your first pit bull or are just thinking about purchasing a pit bull, this is the book for you. I have owned two pit bulls for 6 months now and I purchased them without having any knowledge of the breed. They are great dogs and are eager listeners, but there are alot of things that I learned from the book that are very helpful. This book will definitely make better dogs and me a better owner. The title fits the book, "Essential" for all owners.

  1. An informitive book about the breed A good book to read before you get this breed of dog

  2. This author basically wrote about 1/4 of the book about special Chessie features. The rest of the book was cut and paste from any generic dog care/training book. I really found this book of little help and guidance.

5 comments about The Conure: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. This is a great intro to Conures for people who are thinking of adopting one. It gives a write up on 25 different species of Conures. It gives a nice over view of what Conure species might be right for you by mentioning noise levels and habits like prone to chewing or feather plucking. It is pretty good in mentioning the responsibilites that come with bird ownership. I think this is important for everyone to know before getting a bird of any kind! The book did get into all kinds of care items to from medical to feeding to grooming and even some tricks & games training.

My favorite part was learning that some Conures will actually sleep on their backs in their food dishes! (HAHA) Other good tips included how to administer meds if you have a sick bird. It gave me some good basic tips.

Things I didn't agree with is not kissing your bird on it's beak and feeding it some low-fat dairy (I don't give my birds any dairy) but to be fair the book did say only a tiny bit because they lack the enzymes to digest dairy. As for the beak thing, I understand the point about human siliva being bad for birds but I certainly don't slobber on my birds!

Overall, I would recommend reading this book if you are thinking of getting a Conure, you just got a Conure and you need to know what to do, or you have one and just can't get enough info on them. It is somewhat basic for any of you that are already experience bird owners though.

Note: Consider visiting a local bird rescue if you are considering a pet bird!

  2. When I bought this book, I also purchased Conure books by Anne Watkins and Matthew Vriends. GUIDE TO CONURE is not the best of the three, in my opinion. However, that said, if this is the book you can find then get it and use it. The book is a hard back whereas the others are soft covered books (if that matters), and Rach covers all the basics regarding food, shelter, health issues, etc. In fact, you could use much of the material in her book for any bird's care. She also includes a nice section on the various types of Conures and sections on Conure health that cover issues of concern to this species in particular as well as things to beware of if your Conure is a "free-flight" bird.

Rach includes a nice long section on cage selection as does Watkins. If you haven't given much thought to the cage you should. Conures can be messy birds and you want to buy something big enough to house your guy made of a substance he can't dismantle that is relatively easy to clean. This means you must think about the cage in terms of space considerations and weight. When the FedEX guy delivered my conure's cage he accused me of ruining his health. There are great cages available, but you should consider the cost of the cage and it's accessories when you buy your bird. Rach's book will help you reflect on these and other issues

  3. I LOVE this book because most other books on Conures put WAY to much focus on breeding, which is good if you are an avid breeder, but can be a pain if you keep, or want to keep, a Conure as a pet. When I was thinking of getting a Conure, I bought one book, it told me SO little, then I bought another, same stuff said, in a different form, THEN I found this book, and that made me deicide on a Sun Conure, I would recommend it to people who are considering getting a bird the most, it tells you what might happen if you get a Conure, it doesn't try to mask the fact that Conures are VERY high need birds, if there is anything wrong with it is that the author doesn't seem to call a bird a he or a she, its weird, but WHO(???) cares, sometimes when I write I make it them problems, and it is understood, so that didn't bother me, but I had to find at least 1 thing wrong with it, and that was all I could think of!
    Hope this helps!!!

  4. My family and I have two parakeets and two cockatiels; they are such energetic members of the family and are so loved that we decided to add another bird - you guessed it, a conure. When we brought our Jenday conure home (at 12 weeks old), we had little knowledge of how to take care of a "larger" bird - that is, until we bought and read Julie Rach's fabulous book. It is written in such an easy, friendly style that it's almost addictive to read - and add to this all the up-to-the-minute information on care and proper diet - it's the Conure Bible! We don't hesitate for a moment to say - GO OUT AND GET THIS BOOK!! You and your conure(s) will be glad you did!

  5. This is a truly informative book. I was leary about buying this book. Some of the other books i bought seemed to be written for idiots, and i was bored quickly. This one answered all of my questions and went into hard to find detail. I highly recommend this to people who own other birds and are already experienced in bird keeping. It is not just the basics, but the odd things that apply to just Conures. BUY THIS!
