2 comments about Silky Terrier: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- WOW! This book is great! Lots of great information on the Silky Breed. We breed our Silky Terrier once a year and This is one of the two Silky Terrier Books that we give to all our New silky Terrier Families.
These dogs are wonderful dogs, not yappy and they have a soft silky coat of HAIR, not fur. If you have alergies this is a great breed of dog. Wife has alergies and we got 3!! Some of our friends have yorkies and after we got our silkies they wished they had found the silky breed first.
I like to call them "A Mans Yorkie"! They are twice the size of a yorkshire terrier, they don't have wirey hair, they are stronger which makes them less suseptible to the medical problems yorkies have. A Silky is an Austrailian Terrier and a Yorkshire Terrier Mix. The breed name came from the LONG, Silky Soft hair the breed has.
Beautiful, wonderful, loving, devoted, loyal, great watch dogs, not yappy!
If you are looking for a toy breed, I think everyone should at least check out this breed before you buy a puppy.
- Good book talking about facts, personalties, health issues, discipline, etc of the Silky Terrier. Also contains many pictures.
Advice: good to have before you get your Silky !

1 comments about Dogs We Love: With Jane Smiley, Armistead Maupin, Ann Beattie, Edward Albee, and 14 Other Dog People.
- This is a chunky, endearing, handsome book that's just confirms everything we most love about dogs. But these are MASTERS of prose here, as well as being "masters" of their family dogs. So just imagine the novelists and short story writers you love sharing stories of their own canine companions. Jane Smiley on her golden's insatiable fetching, Armistead Maupin on his dog's uncanny ability to interfere with anything romantic, Merrill Markoe on her small dog's undeniable love affair with her slipper. There's Danny Shanahan writing and illustrating a short guide on how to read your dog's behaviors. There's--well, there are sheep dogs, mixed bred wonders, Labs, bull dogs, unruly dogs, cockers, spaniels...and a pack of other dogs photographed in black and white by Robin Schwartz that make this book the perfect gift to give or keep. Plus the book's profits are part of Rosen's ongoing efforts to support animal welfare agencies.

5 comments about If Only They Could Talk: The Miracles of Spring Farm.
- I am giving my opinion for the first time on a book, which in this case, is a complete waste of time. I admire animal lovers and care providers, and it seems they do a great job on that farm caring for abandoned horses and other animals. But the book, seems a very bad copy of James Herriot books, even the title is copied from his first book. Even If you believe in telepathic communication with animals (dead or alive), animal reincarnation, UFOs, Human & animal ghosts, Horses writing poems through telepathy, I am pretty sure that you will find this book boring & badly written. Maybe it is their way to make publicity for their farm which depends partly on donations... As I said their Farm for animal care seems admirable, but the book... not worth your time.
- This was excellent, but I already knew the story because I've taken several classes at Spring Farm. Dawn, Bonnie, and everyone else are great and the animals are by far the most loving and interesting bunch I've ever encountered. Spring Farm has incredible energy, and being with all of those animals was a life altering experience. This book just gives a small inkling of what goes on there. I hope Dawn and Bonnie will write another book.
- I absolutely loved this book and I recommend it for any one who loves animals, and especially those interested in the fascinating subject of animal communication. A truely wonderful read.
- Truth is indeed stranger than fiction, and I do believe Bonnie and Dawn hear the idiosyncratic ramblings from their host of animals .Interspecies communication is an interest of mine but I much prefer the intelligences of flowers, trees and rocks and their overlords the devas.I state that up front because I would have probably given five stars if I was a true animal lover
If you have any interest in animals and their care- and their viewpoints- you will love this memoir!
- i LOVED this book. given that i have been to this farm and witnessed alot of these things for myself, i can attest to the truth and honesty at spring farm cares. i have met bonnie, dawn and lots of the animals mentioned in this book. its great to read a book in which you know everyone!! these 2 woman and all the people, animals and spirits there are doing something that is AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL. while living on another farm (the o'connor farm in litchfield, ny) where i rented my apartment, my landlord & landlady (jim & roberta o'connor) gave as much hay as they had to spring farm after their fire. i have also donated with glee and will continue to do so. it is a hard & extremely costly, but loving 'job' to take care of a farm this size, but to them it is NOT like work at all. it is like a natural way of life for them. the strength, love and mystery that grows there is truly a miracle. i have sent friends to dawn for readings to find lost animals. at first i did it just to see what would happen because i knew dawn knew absolutely NOTHING about the pet or owner before contacting dawn. each time, she directly them to the lost pet - not always living since telepathy can be read in the living as well as the dead - but in all cases, dawn provided closure to these pets and pet owners. if not for bonnie & dawn, this beautiful place would not exist. i have seen it grow from the beginning. although i have moved out of that area now, i am always following their newsletters and website. they have a gorgeous sanctuary. countless miracles occur and continue to occur there all the time. if i could give it 10 stars, i would gladly do so :))

5 comments about Bringing Light To Shadow: A Dog Trainer's Diary.
- I read this is about an hour of skimming, an interesting project, but not I fear a good use of time and energy. This book feels like the mandatory "see what I can do" dog trainers book. Why keep a dog that fights /attacks your dogs and bites people? This dog has bitten several people, would you ever be able to trust a dog like this?
I am glad the writer wrote this, when people with aggressive dogs call me, I refer them to this book, so they can see how long, slow, and possible no results, the process is of attempting to rehab a biting dog.
- This book and the author's work were inspiring to me as a dog owner and trainer of my own dogs. It gave me perspectives and encouragement to use patience. In the descriptions and journals of her trials and progress with Shadow, Dennison outlined usable and applicable formats and plans for reaching troubled dogs and establishing and keeping their trust and loyalty. Most of all, I laud her faith in herself and in Shadow despite any measurable setbacks and lessons.
- "Bringing Light to Shadow" is the daily journal of a skillful dog trainer's experiences as she gradually modified the behavior of a human-aggressive Border Collie. She succeeded with this difficult dog because of her understanding and perserverance, and with the help of a wise mentor and several patient and helpful friends. Shadow's story is an inspiration to anyone who has a similar dog and is wrestling with the difficult choice between behavior modification and euthanesia.
- In my mind, this is the best, most comprehensive book on the market on the subject of rehabilitating a dog who has "baggage."
Why? Because it explains in heartfelt detail everything that can go wrong or right in the process of retraining and does so through personal experience of an expert trainer. As Yogi Berra said: "In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is."
It also reveals how we humans we will ride the highs and lows of a journey that is at times filled with joy, hope, and exuberance, and at other times great disappointment and guilt.
In the end, it is also a "how-to" book for everyone who loves a scared dog, and who has the dedication and perseverence required to keep working.
- Dennison's Bringing Light To Shadow: A Dog Trainer's Diary provides the diary of a dog trainer who turned an aggressive rescue dog into a good pet. Shadow lashed out at people without warning and was dangerous; Dennison was a pro dog trainer who faced a real challenge with her new Internet acquisition. Her mistakes and successes come to life in a diary which tells of a successful achievement.

5 comments about The Akita: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.
- As an individual considering the purchase of an akita, I was hoping to find a book that would offer me an indepth look at the breed characteristics, and specific items which would help me better determine if the breed is for me. While the book offers a nice introduction to the Akita breed, it offers no real insight into specifics that could help in my decision. The second half of the book is a generel overview of raising a puppy and training dogs. A great overview, but not what I was expecting.
- Our Akita is now 8 years old and has developed, magnificently. This is in no small part due to reading Barbara's book in preparation. As wonderful as the Akita is, this breed best requires the owner some self-education before purchase. This book helps one getting it right from the start (which is imperative).
- especially if you want a book that is devoted entirely to the Akita!! Half of this book is about dogs in general. The information is good, just not what I expected from a book entitled "The Akita: An Owner's Guide..." The real title of this book is what you find between the parentheses.
- Bull Terriers are my favorite dogs and suff like that. Im getting that dog next week on a saturday. I hope everyone of u people gets a dog tooÜ
- This is an excellent reference book for people who are looking to buy an Akita, or the first time owner. The pictures were beautiful, and the text was straight forward and did not try to hide the goods or the bads about owning an Akita. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the breed.

5 comments about Zebra Finches: Everything About Housing, Care, Nutrition, Breeding, and Disease (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- I am new to Zebra Finches and needed some information on how to care for my new pets. The book did have quite a bit of good information. Just enough for me to get by. It seemed like it took forever to get the book. Longer than it needed. It was very affordable and arrived in good condition. Not sure I would order from this seller again because of the delayed shipping.
- I have purchased this book for my Business Fobex South Africa cc (Fish or Bird exports )and after reading and studing the whole book I had more then success with all the information I gained from all the wonderful topics. This book is a must for those who want to have a deeper knowledge of the Zebra Finch. e-mail fobex@iafrica.com " and remember that any Barron Books of the Pet Owners Manual is always a good buy "
- This book has given me all the information I needed to help in raising my finches. I enjoy it and refer to it everyday.
- In just a short 76 pages Hans-Jurgen Martin touches on all aspects of Zebra husbandry. The information goes somewhat beyond beginners' interest and includes an excellent introduction to genetics. The quality of photos in the book are excellent,I only wish these nice photos where dedicated to more photos of the various varieties of Zebras instead of nests and types of seed. I find it to be a valuable quick reference source and it sparks further interest in the care and breeding of Zebras. I would highly recommend it to anyone who keeps Zebra Finches. Kathy Dezern
- we purchased zebra finches without much knowledge on that breed, nor of any breed. we found this book to be very informational in regards to nesting, feeding, enviroment, breeding, etc... it is a book that you can always reference to. thank you to the author for writing this book for the advanced as well as the novice. a book you will truly enjoy.

5 comments about Newts and Salamanders (More Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).
- This is not the best book about newts and salamanders, but
it is very very ok if you look to the price up there!!
Lot of nice images, ideas and some diseases info. I liked.
- This book was helpful when I decided to keep a newt because I was able to find out what I could feed it. It did not give information about a few of the species pictured in the book, but for a beginner there is information about feeding and housing that is useful.

2 comments about The Official Book of the Scottish Terrier.
- This a wonderful book on the Scottish Terrier and is a great addition to the library of any fancier of the breed. I have not read a better accounting of the breed's history and development and the breed's character. The pictures are some of the best you will see in any dog book. The pictures also feature many of the late and great dogs of the past who figure so prominently in many pedigrees of the best Scotties of today.
- This volume is officially approved by the Scottish Terrier Club of America, one of the oldest breed clubs (founded 1900). The book has a large amount of excellent color photographs throughout, as well as black and white photos of early champions. The history of the breed is examined in depth, the breed standard, sections on champions old and modern. Bloodlines of some of the major dogs are also examined. There is a complete chapter devoted to the professional handlers who have campaigned the Scottish Terrier in the show ring. The book also covers choosing a pup, some breeding information, and also some other unusual activites such as obedience (who says terriers aren't obedient! ) and there is even a wheaten scottie who has police training mentioned in this book! Mrs. Lee previously authored a book on raising and whelping puppies that is considered one the best books available on this subject. She has been active in this breed showing, breeding and judging in AKC conformation. The front cover of the book is very attractive with a plaid ribbion, the offical seal of the Scottish Terrier Club of America, and a large color photograph of Champion Blanart Bewitching. For anyone interested in the "diehard" this is THE indispensable book both in the detail in the text and the lush photography. There is a wealth of information for both the pet owner and the show enthusiast.
