3 comments about Robinson's Genetics for Cat Breeders and Veterinarians.

  1. it was on back order from another place, i finally got it and its this little book......not worth the wait, was upset about all the stuff i knew already was in it, it was supposed to be this great book......if you already have an understanding for genetics and diseases then dont bother paying for this book. for the novice person, its a little over whelming i think....informational for them but not for me.

  2. The authors of Robinsons' Genetics for Cat Breeders and veterinarains are two breeders who have written on breeding and showing (Vella and McGonagle), a geneticist (Shelton) and a practicing veterinarian (Stanglein). This book simply and directly covers the subject of genetics, incorporating the lastest scientific advances, while at the same time reflecting the practical knowledge of experienced breeders.

The whole subject of genetics is covered: principles of heredity; breeding systems and inbreeding; coat and color inheritance; color variations; breeds; and genetic anomolies. The heart of this book is the material on breeding systems and practices, and selective breeding and inbreeding. The evaluation of cats for breeding purposes and comparisons between possible mates are explored in considerable depth. The chapter on genetic anomolies is up-to-date and quite comprehensive.

The new Fourth Edition is good news for all serious fanciers. Not only does it continue Robinson's work, it actually makes the best guide to feline genetics better!

  3. This is a very straightforward book which details every aspect of feline genetics. It is very readable and informative on the facts and also on breeding theories. The writers coming from four different disciplines is helpful, along with a glossary which explains the terminology. It would be a very good investment for an experienced person or novice breeder (me).

1 comments about Cat Behavior and Training: Veterinary Advice for Owners.

  1. This is one the best books you can find to teach yourself how to train your cat. This book covers most of the problem behaviors that cat owners will face including improper elimination, aggression, scratching on furniture, et. This book goes into why cats behave that way and sets out simple and humane methods to correct problem behaviors.

2 comments about Neotropical Birds: Ecology and Conservation.

  1. Just an amazing book! A reliable work that every ornithologist should have. The status for each species it`s a tool for research and conservation works! Very nice! I strongly recommend it!

  2. Certainly tropical bird lovers, who have had the thrill of one or more bird trips to Central or South America, will want to begin to make more sense of their experiences. This book is for the birder about to turn tropical ecologist. It makes sense of the habitats, with terrific photos, many by John Fitzpatrick, of representative areas of the key habitats. The database tables in the back of the book, termed "essentially a download of Ted Parker's mind" are the essence of this information. For each of the 4000 species from the Rio Grande to Tierra Del Fuego, there are lists of habitats used by every species, and even a table of the indicator bird species for each region.
The books makes the really important point: you cannot prioritize saving the birds of the tropics only by species, one bird at a time. You have to look at what habitats are being irreversibly destroyed the most rapidly, and use those birds which depend most on these habitats - as info connections by which the habitats are to be recognized in the field, and then saved by appropriate political and economic action. Terrific book! Easy to read.

3 comments about Training Retreivers and Spaniels to Hunt 'Em Up!.

  1. While this book was helpful in some respects such as the "show pup" technique, how dogs learn by association, keeping things positive and fun, and taking it slow, I felt that overall this book was more detailed than it needed to be. When you are eager to train your new pup, a thorough reading of this book is just too time-consuming. What you want to be doing is getting outside and working with your dog, not trying to figure out the exact steps and details of the training method these authors prescribe.

It was also confusing that in the first section of the book, they describe the "heel" and retrieving as a part of the basic commands, but not to teach heel until the dog is quartering and flushing (which is described in the later half of the book) and to review the eighth chapter on retrieving first.

There wasn't an index in the copy I read, so it was hard to find a section that I wanted to review, such as the "whoa" command, or the heel command.

  2. In Hunt 'Em Up!, authors, hunters and dog trainers Joe Arnett and George Hickox draw upon their many years of gun-dog training to collaborate to show even the most novice hunter how to successfully train their Retrievers and Spaniel to become effective bird dogs and hunting companions. Clear, step-by-step training "tips, tricks and techniques" are laid out in thoroughly user-friendly fashion. If you are a hunter and would like to have your canine companion become a part of your hunting experience, then begin with a thorough reading of Hunt 'Em Up!

  3. After having read over twenty books on the subject of dog training/handling, I place this one at the top!

Not only does this book guide you step-by-step through the early stages of training a dog (referred to as the "Show Pup" stage), it guides you to a finished/polished hunting dog as well.

What particularly appeals to me is the method of training. It is thorough, easy to understand, and if followed correctly will result in a "tail wagging" confident, bold hunting dog.

I have had the opportunity to attend a training session with the co-author, George Hickox and found that the book correlates quite closely with his class material. The wealth of knowledge obtained from this book is comprised of a lifetime of training.

I am currently teaching a 9-month old Lab following the books outline. I am extremely pleased with how well my dog is learning while maintaining her style and utilizing the instincts she was born with.

I wish everyone the very best in your training.

    Regards,

    Ron

  1. Not happy at all. the item is only 2" X 2", can't give this as the gift I intended. For the price I never would have paid it had I know it was so incrediably small.

  2. When you want to really show your pet your love...make home made dog biscuits! This kit is perfect, just enough recipes and comes with dog shaped biscuit cutters!

5 comments about Love Heels: Tales from Canine Companions for Independence.

  1. I read Love Heels over a period of several days and was particularly impressed with the heart warming stories of the dog and human teams. One of the stories was about a little boy, whose short life was made bearable by the grace of his beloved service dog. None of us likes to think that our dogs will outlive our children, but some dogs have the great privilege of being there for people in a way that is unique and healing. The whole book is moving really, with stories about people from all walks of life who have survived and thrived in part because of the spirit of their canine companions.
If you already love dogs, or are involved in a service profession, you won't regret having this book on your coffee-table or in your study.
And as a physician who has a great interest in service and therapy dogs [...], I heartily recommend this book.
    Be well,

  2. What a wonderful organization...stories to touch hearts of all ages. We are currently raising a puppy for CCI and the experiences of the authors are especially meaningful.

  3. This book makes a great gift. It is a very nice looking book at a good price. The pictures are as touching as the stories. If you love dogs or just want to read stories about love and courage this is a "must have" book.

  4. Oh, wow! I highly recommend this book. I have been a puppy raiser for CCI since 1988, and this book absolutely captures the heart and soul of this wonderful organization. I have lived the puppy-raising part twelve times, so I especially appreciate the breeder-caretaker and graduate stories. The book not only reinforces the specialness of the bond between humans and dogs, but also gives you insight into how the lives of those who receive these awesome animals are forever changed. Buy it!

  5. This is a most wonderful book that captures that magical and intangible thing that makes the relationship between humans and dogs so deep. My partner lost her service dog this past year and we don't know when she will be able to get another. This book reminded us that other people know what that special connection is, too. I recommend it with complete enthusiasm.

2 comments about Lake Tanganyika Cichlids (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).

  1. Barrons in general, does a great job in presenting thier information in a concise and clear manner. Even beginners will have no problem following along in this 'pocket reference' publication. Do not let the price or size of the book sway you. It is packed with all of the pertenent information. Tanganikan cichlids are wonderful fishes and barrons does an excellent job of intoducing all of the husbandry techniques needed to keep these fish happy and healthy. One drawback is that more experienced aquarists or ichthyologists might find the book lacking in some of the detailed areas. Although overall, you pretty much can't go wrong when purchasing this book

  2. Mr. Smith covered all the bases with this book. From giving an educational step by step way to set up and maintain an African cichlid tank. he offers good quality pictures of a wide variety of fish with a very informational care and breeding for each fish. I recommend this book to all interested in keeping these fish.

5 comments about Clicker Fun: Dog Tricks and Games Using Positive Reinforcement.

  1. There is another book, Peggy Tillman's Clicking with your dog,
that often gets the press, but this is a much better book. Dr. Jones talks about how to get a non-interested dog interested in clicking and how to move up from there. Tillman's book gives every task a name though often does not discuss how to group them and make them into new combinations. Dr. Jones has no problem with grouping, re-grouping, organising and such activities.

This book has plenty of activities which you can start with and use for either performance or comfirmation activities plus a weekly planner. She gives lots of 'shaping' tips and problem solutions. A superb training manual. Sorry it's op.

  2. I review dog books. This is a seriously good book. Buy it! Dr. Ian Dunba

  3. I bought this book on the recommendation of my dog trainer. I had never trained a dog before. I wanted to do everything right from the beginning. My charming and energetic Jack Russel responded immediantly! I am having so much fun with my new friend. Thank you, Ms. Jones, for sharing your insight with others!

  4. This little book is jam packed with great ideas for tricks - new and old.Readers will not only be able to teach their dogs tricks using friendly, fun, and fast techniques, they'll soon figure out that clicker training works - for any facet of dog training. This is a great way to build a relationship with your dog, and Deb Jones has made it even easier. This book is also a great teacher's aid for anyone teaching others how to train their dogs. The tricks and games are easily incorporated into a classroom setting, and Deb Jones even includes a four week insutructors guide for those wanting to set up their own tricks classes.

  5. Deb Jones' book is one of the easiest to understand clicker training books out there. The science of operant conditioning is explained in layman's language, and the examples are down-to-earth. The tricks and games Dr. Jones describes are fun to teach any dog and will lay the foundation for further work in clicker training.
