4 comments about A Dolphin in Front of You.

  1. This book helped me a lot, but the information it provided was kind of already know. Otherwise this is a pretty good short and sweet read.

  2. Pete Davey has once again writen a great little book. However, don't let the tiny size fool you, it's loaded with tons of information that will help aspiring marine mammal trainers break into the field. From his own beginnings to sound advise on writing a great resume and interviewing tips, Davey's book is for anyone looking to have a dolphin in front of them!

  3. I purchased this book after having difficulties transferring the advice from various "mainstream" resume books to my search for a job in the animal care field. I had heard that there was a section specifically on resumes, and thought it might be helpful.

When the book arrived, I was a bit surprised. The book itself is very small in size, about the size of a 4"x6" photograph. I was able to read it all in about a half hour. Overall,I feel it would be a really useful book for high school age kids who are unsure about where to start on their path to a career in dolphin training, but not for someone with experience in the field. The resume section was very vague, as was the interview section.

Overall, the book was OK, but not the resource I expected it to be. Unfortunately, there are very few books on the market dealing with the unique challenges faced in this career field.

  4. this book is great for people who want to persue the carrer of bcoming a marine mammal trainer. i myslef have always dreamed of becomeing a trainer and this book gave me great pointers of how to become one. I thoughrougly enjoyed reading this book.

3 comments about Horse, Follow Closely: Native American Horsemanship.

  1. Stepping Off the Edge: Learning & Living Spiritual Practice

Sick of boring old dressage? Overdone eventing? Wacky Western riding? In this stunningly beautiful volume, GaWaNi Pony Boy describes the roots of Native American riding. When Europeans arrived in the Americas, horses had disappeared long before. GaWaNi shows how the first Americans took to horses-- and created an awe inspiring bond and culture. I have not met GaWaNi, but I knew my husband would love his horsemanship the minute I saw this book. GaWaNi doesn't clip his horse's faces-- something my husband totally approves.

  2. All his books that I have read touch your soul - and make you smile, cry, and slap your hands and giggle - because you realize that your love for horses is as simple and as complex as another human's.
    Horse people - we're everywhere !

  3. I had hoped for perhaps a somewhat unique, Native American perspective on horsemanship; something a little different from othe natural horsemanship trainers selling books & dvds. But, this is the same methodology used by most all of them. It makes a pretty coffee table book, but has nothing new to offer unless this is your first foray into natural horsemanship. Basically, establishing yourself as the "Alpha" or leader, based on the well-known fact that horses want to follow a leader they trust. It emphasizes not using force or abuse & demonstrates how to control the horse's actions once you have established the basic trust/respect level required. I also viewed the dvd & was disappointed that Pony Boy used a perfectly trained horse in all his demonstrations. BORING! It's more of a pretty picture book than a useful instruction you can apply to your untrained horse. Not a book worth keeping in my horse book library.

5 comments about The Dog Pit - Or, How To Select, Breed, Train And Manage Fighting Dogs, With Points As To Their Care In Health And Disease - 1888 (History Of Fighting Dogs Series) (History of Fighting Dogs Series).

  1. Due to Amazon's refusal to remove this book - The Dog Pit - Or, How To Select, Breed, Train And Manage Fighting Dogs, With Points As To Their Care In Health And Disease - 1888 (History Of Fighting Dogs Series) (History of Fighting Dogs Series) by Richard, K. Fox (Paperback - Jan 9, 2006) - I have resigned my account and will not shop at this heartless organization.

  2. Peace and love for all living creatures in this and all the worlds. Stop (ab)using animals and live a healthy life without suffering. WE are ONE. We are the animals and the animals are we. If we hurt them we hurt ourselves. Peace be with you

  3. While I find dog-fighting horrible, I think this was a fairly interesting read - and a great view into the mind of people who justified the sport and objectified these animals (especially in a time which was much more tolerant of these kinds of sports - so it's even more of a confident "just the way things are" subtext, all about the dog-fighting without apologizing for it). So to start off with, it's ignorant to believe that the only thing that people use a book for are it's intended meanings. Keeping books around, even (perhaps especially) with views we disagree with, is important. To simply not sell a book (or try to pressure a store - by boycott, for example) because we disagree with it is ignorant, and inspires ignorance. It's just totally asinine to feel threatened by knowledge or information that doesn't jive with us.

So yes, I totally disagree with everyone who has a problem with Amazon on this. It's rediculous to say that by selling a book the company is promoting the views of the author and can be identified with those views. If this were true, how could Amazon sell a book on Christian apologetics, and one on the argument for Atheism? Ann Coulter and Noam Chomsky? Francis Schaeffer and Sartre? This isn't a PETA bookstore, it's a bookstore, and part of having a successful bookstore is having as many books as possible (unless you're making a bookstore with a certain view in mind- Communist, Vegetarian, Christian, etc). And part of having as many books as possible is having books which share views or are based on presuppositions which one doesn't agree with.

Back to animals, Amazon also sells books promoting the vegan lifestyle, and nobody complains. Is this where we're at as a society, where we boycott a store just because they sell a book with values we disagree with? You all sound like a bunch of old housewives burning Beatles albums...

And if you really think that selling a book makes one guilty of promoting a certain world-view, that's a shame - because they've been selling "Mein Kampf" here since the beginning, and where were you then? So the truth comes out - you care more about your dogs than Jews!

"Jews? Yeah, that's fine - just don't hurt our wittle puppy-dogs!"

  4. I wholeheartedly agree with Nicolaj. First of all, it's not even that easy to find this book using Amazon's search engine. So it can't be said that Amazon's promoting dogslaughter. Second of all, why aren't dog worshipers like Jamie equally concerned about Barnaby Conrad's "How to Fight a Bull"? Or the countless cookbooks featuring recipes for meat? Or the myriad guides on fishing, hunting, guns, and the like? Oh, you say, but cooking meat, fishing, hunting, owning guns, and whatnot are legal. WELL, GUESS WHAT? SO IS SELLING BOOKS, D-BAGS. Get off your high horses. Amazon's clearly in the right here.

  5. I disagree with the notion that by selling this book, Amazon is condoning dog fighting. This is just as ridiculous an assumption as saying I necessarily support dog fighting by buying this book - perhaps I am just interested in the history of the sport..how it came about. Or perhaps as an adamant anti-animal cruelty crusader, I'd buy it to educate myself on the topic. People need to stop confusing Amazon.com with their local mom and pop bookseller handpicking novels they like for their valuable and limited shelf-space. This is basically a book warehouse that delivers the largest selection of books at a low price. They are not in the business filtering the books they sell based on whether they like/dislike, agree/disagree with. And I think we need to stop expecting/asking/or caring whether or not amazon filters their books for us. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

  1. I am a cat lover, but also love vintage photography. This book combines them both in a beautiful way. There are some newer photos too, and they are all in B/W. I keep this book on my coffee table, and I flip through it all the time- it is timeless. I think it would be a wonderful gift for any cat lover or a fan of photography.

5 comments about Thirty Years with Fighting Dogs (Vintage Dog Books Breed Classic - American Pit Bull Terrier).

  1. How could Amazon describe dog fighting as a SPORT??? It's not only cruel, but illegal!!!

  2. The book was originally published in 1935 as an infomercial for one man's fighting dogs with emphasis on disparaging his competitors. I read it as background for a book I am writing, and it was helpful for that purpose.

The book does effectively dispel the myth that dog fighting used to be a sport of respectable gentlemen conducted at wholesome family cook outs; the first hand accounts are basements and barns, hiding from the police, with people carrying guns and using them. It was interesting to note that many of the best dogs between 1900 and 1930 were English bull terriers or Boston Terrier crosses, not pits; and that the first fight Armitage ever saw was a Colby dog that quit against a backyard mix.

  3. BRILLIANT!!!, SOME SAY BIASED BUT THIS MAN TELLS THE TRUTH,HE OBVIOUSLY LIVED IN A DANGEROUS ERA AND PARTICIPATED IN A DANGEROUS SPORT, BUT WHAT HE RECOUNTS IS ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!!

  4. This book is a collectors item. For it's fotos of some great old time Pit Fighting Dogs.On the other hand the story's told on it lack a bit of flavor. The thing that got to me is that even do this book is form the early 1900's.Some times it felt like it was wright'en on the past decade. In all I realy recomend this, but only to the people how are willing to learn the truth of this great breed.

  5. Enjoyable reading about the ancenstry of a remarkable breed, the American Pit Bull Terrier. Historical photos (many are poor quaility) of world renowned fighting dogs of their day. Historical accounts of matches from the by-gone days of gentlemen matching game dogs.
Using information acquired in this book, I was able to trace my dog's ancestry back to 1845.
A necessary addition to the library of any American Pit Bull Terrier lover who understands the breed's heritage.

1 comments about Creature Comfort: Animals That Heal.

  1. This book provided me with the perfect introduction to a fascinating subject. Bernie Graham writes in a chatty, accessible style, while at the same time getting across to the reader a great deal of well-sourced information.

The book uses plenty of real-life examples to illustrate how animals can help human beings cope with illness. As I work in the Mental-Health field I was particularly struck by the opening example of a young dog's part in improvement of the health of a man suffering from depression. It rang some very familiar bells, and it was good to have some of the scientific background explained concisely and in a refreshingly jargon-free manner.

Mr Graham has a clear empathy for both patients and animals, as well as a considered and reasonable approach. This is not a book that says 'get a cat and you'll be cured', but one which studies the part animals can play alongside more conventional treatments. For me, this means that the book takes you on a journey rather than tries to win you over, and is all the more convincing for it.

In places it reminded me of some of Oliver Sacks' books with all its keen observations and attention to detail, combined with its very human, life-affirming qualities. There's some good jokes, too.

The book didn't leave me feeling like an expert, but then it didn't try to. Rather it gave me a taste of the whole intruiging topic, and left me wanting to know and learn more. It was helpful, then, to find plenty of further resources and contacts listed at the end of the book.

In all, the perfect introduction to Animal Assisted Therapy, and ideal for anyone interested in animals and our relationships with them.
