4 comments about The Everything Dog Obedience Book: From Bad Dog to Good Dog (Everything: Pets).
- This book will be useful to all of us who are in need of a little training to help our dogs be the good citizens and friends we want them to be.
- My 11-year-old daughter and our dog have been taking classes with Jen Bridwell evern since our dog joined our family 2 years ago, and I am delighted that Jen has an opportunity to reach a wider audience. She is an amazing dog trainer, and her tips really work. We have a Cairn Terrier who does not jump on people who come to the house, never barks when he is inside the house (even if people come to the door or he sees squirrels out the window), and is the most well-mannered dog we could have hoped for. The book highlights everything that Jen covers in class. I highly recommend it!
- I highly recommend this book, which gives you the A-Z of raising your dog with mannerism. The book is written for novices in mind and had been a major life-saver when I was at a complete loss as to what to do when I first got my Boston Terrier, Booda. The book delves into the highly effective method of positive training for dogs at length, resulting in my teaching my pup many commands in just days. This book is a must-read for owners who are experiencing problems in obedience training and/or understanding their dogs. Prospective owners who are contemplating what breed to buy and the pros and cons of adopting a dog to complete their lives and homes will also find them useful. I am also a dog foster parent and i use this book with all the fosters that come in my care so that they can be ready for adoption within a short amount of time.5 Stars for Jennifer Bridwell's comprehensive contents, readability and effectiveness!
- Our shelter dog, Devo has attended two of her 6-week sessions at the Canine Connection in Milford. In addition, Jennifer and her staff volunteered their time to come and train dogs / volunteers at the Stratford Animal shelter (and donate a few of these books). Jen's techniques are top notch and she is a wonderful person to support. Dog training is a must for anyone who wants to have a high quality relationship with their pooch.

- Brand new book - 2nd edition but missing pages 24 through 48!
Having amazon resend another at no cost.
From what *is in the book, looks good.
- As I am a new aussi helder in Europe, I am looking to get more informations about the australian shepherd dog. So I purchased this book and as much I read 'till now was very good information whith some good triks for me.
- Liz Palika did a wonderful job writing this book. I've been breeding, showing, and training aussies for 12 years and this is one of the best books written on them. I really enjoyed the pictures of the dogs in the 1st edition from the Bayshore bloodlines.
- This book has it all, and more importantly, it was written by someone who HAS Australian shepherds (most books out there are not written by those whom actually live with them). A nice overview of the breed and the possibilities it holds. Great work.
- This book is an up to date look at Aussies . You have to have it in your library. I especially liked the description of the Aussie shadow tendancy. She writes do you mind scooting your chair back and bumping into the dog? My Gwen is under the chair as I'm writing this. This is the book I lend to my friends who are thinking about getting an Aussie. The pictures are beautiful. I did notice a couple typos.

4 comments about Top Dog: Training the Retriever for Waterfowl and Upland Hunting.
- This book will give you all the basic skills you need for obedience, and starting you gun dog. It does have a lot of info about later training as well. Ignore the review about not being able to train a dog at 1 year on page 26. He is taking it out of context. The actual quote from the book is as follows: "I can't guarantee that good preschool work will make your dog a top dog, but I can guarantee the puppy will be untrainable if you bring it home, put it in the kennel, give it no name, pay no attention to it, and a year or so later try to train it".
This is a great book for anyone that has decided to train their own gun dog!
- this book focuses too much on field trials and not enough on the hunting dog..better books out there for the hunter
- What a dissapointment of a book. While the training methods seem very reasonable. This book is totally geared for the new puppy owner or even prospective puppy buyer. He states in the book that obedience training should begin at age 49 days. and actually has the arrogance to say on page 26 that a dog that is a year old is untrainable. I cannot be the only person in the world who has aquired an adolescent dog that needs field training. Book is virtually worthless.
- Top Dog has it all - this training guide is practical, simple and effective. The training methods work equally well for the family pet or a hunting dog. Having trained dogs for many years, I have several books in my collection, Top Dog is by far the most complete guide for amateur trainers. The book takes you and your dog on a journey from the basics of obedience to advanced drills, in minutes a day. If you only have one book, Top Dog is the one to buy.

1 comments about The Everything Yorkshire Terrier Book: A Complete Guide to Raising, Training, And Caring for Your Yorkie (Everything: Pets).
- The title is self explanatory. This book will not be too helpful to a beginner as it explains everything with very little graphics and it is difficult to visualise aspects such as the grooming of the dog. I thought the toilet training bit was lacking as well and served more as a sweeping generalisation of known information than anything that would be truly helpful to a novice.
On the plus side, the writing is pleasantly light, although this does not make up for the lack of illustrations and depth.

3 comments about The Cocker Spaniel: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.
- I recently adopted a Cocker Spaniel from the humane society. I had no knowledge of this breed and had not planned on adopting a breed until I researched it first. Well, Sydney caught both my eye and my husband's. She is adorable with her big brown eyes. I ordered the book after I adopted her, and I am glad that I did because it helps to understand the breed. Consider a Cocker Spaniel, and buy this book first.
- This book is perfect for someone who wants good general knowledge about the Cocker Spaniel. It covers all the basics and then some. It is a small book. It is concise and perfect for the average pet owner. I like it very much.
- This book is exactly what the new Cocker Spaniel owner needs. Not bogged down with technicalities about the dog's structure, it concentrates on presenting the important things about your new pup. A smattering of the history of the breed fills it out nicely. Judy Iby is no lightweight either...Judy herself has put over 100 AKC titles on her own Cocker Spaniels, including obedience, conformation, tracking and agility. She has mentored probably hundreds of new Cocker Spaniel owners through the puppy and adolescent years of their new companion dog's life, and now she shares this wisdom with the rest of us.
I would have rated the book a "5 star" book for just Judy Iby's contributions, but I think the "generic" parts of the book that are tacked on on by Howell to construct their series of breed books almost detract from the fine quality of the original contributions about the Cocker Spaniel by Judy Iby. It is accessible, inexpensive, and a Gem for new Cocker Spaniel owners.

5 comments about All You Ever Wanted to Know About Herbs for Pets.
- Almost 20 years ago, as my journey and quest into the wonders of natural medicine began, the universe sent me two very special people - Greg and Mary Wulff-Tilford.
We fast became friends and, fortunately for our animals, they happily offered their talents, love and services to BrightHaven (a sanctuary for elderly and disabled animals) to help us heal our animals. We used their fast developing line of products, and also benefited from their amazing expertise in the preparation and use of herbs.
I soon realized the potential of their combination herbal remedies; knew they would be essential to our work, and was consequently thrilled to receive a copy of their amazing book "Herbs for Pets", when it first came into print.
Herbs for Pets has become a BrightHaven bible over the years, and I recommend it over and over again to pet lovers, who wish to enhance and maintain the health of their animals, naturally.

- An excellent source of easy to read information for a beginning herbalist.
- Very thorough description of the different herbs and their uses, but the book is organized by herb. It would be much more helpful if it were organized by malady, and then listed which herbs would help.
- This is one of the most comprehensive books on this subject that I think I've ever seen. I had been looking for specific information for about a year, and this book had the answer for me. Great read, well organized, and extremely interesting. Worth every penny I paid for it!! I'll use it for my pets generations for years.
- Wonderful photos, super information, and a great reference. This is my standard herbal reference for pets that I use in my practice and in the articles and books I write!

1 comments about Creature Comfort: Animals That Heal.
- This book provided me with the perfect introduction to a fascinating subject. Bernie Graham writes in a chatty, accessible style, while at the same time getting across to the reader a great deal of well-sourced information.
The book uses plenty of real-life examples to illustrate how animals can help human beings cope with illness. As I work in the Mental-Health field I was particularly struck by the opening example of a young dog's part in improvement of the health of a man suffering from depression. It rang some very familiar bells, and it was good to have some of the scientific background explained concisely and in a refreshingly jargon-free manner. Mr Graham has a clear empathy for both patients and animals, as well as a considered and reasonable approach. This is not a book that says 'get a cat and you'll be cured', but one which studies the part animals can play alongside more conventional treatments. For me, this means that the book takes you on a journey rather than tries to win you over, and is all the more convincing for it. In places it reminded me of some of Oliver Sacks' books with all its keen observations and attention to detail, combined with its very human, life-affirming qualities. There's some good jokes, too. The book didn't leave me feeling like an expert, but then it didn't try to. Rather it gave me a taste of the whole intruiging topic, and left me wanting to know and learn more. It was helpful, then, to find plenty of further resources and contacts listed at the end of the book. In all, the perfect introduction to Animal Assisted Therapy, and ideal for anyone interested in animals and our relationships with them.

3 comments about Annie On Dogs.
- This is a delightful book that reads like a novel but contains a mountain of interesting information put together by one of the most famous breeders/judges in the world. I recommend it to anybody with an interest in showing, judging and breeding.
- If you are new to the show world this is a must. Annie describes her early days before she became a judge as well as when she began judging. Some of the antics that went on are priceless!
- Annie On Dogs is a compilation of magazine articles written by Anne Rogers Clark...one of the most respected judges in the dog world. When Mrs Clark spoke, you listened!! And learned!! Her death in December 2006 was a blow to all who knew her and she may never be "replaced".
If you wish to learn how to conduct yourself in various dog show situations (some very funny), then this is the book for you. If you wish to understand what goes on behind the glamour of televised dog shows, wish to understand things about those crazy people in the ring and just WHY that judge chose that dog, get this book and start reading at the beginning. The wisdom on the pages will astound you.
I was fortunate enough to both show under and steward for Mrs Clark and base my own judging format on her example. Read Mrs Clark's book and you'll never regret it!!! A 5 star rating is not high enough. Make this a 20!!!!!!
