5 comments about Monitors and Tegus (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This is by far the best book I have found for tegus. It contains very detailed, easy to understand information. Although mostly focused on monitors, nearly all the information can be applied to tegus as well.

  2. Whereas monitors receive moderate treatment in this book, Tegus seem to have been (literally) added as an afterthought. Many sections speak at length about varanid behavior for several pages, only to end with "Tegus are also somewhat like this except ..." (and a few words).

If you're serious about keeping monitors, there are more detailed and useful resources (The Natural History of Monitor Lizards, Monitors: The Biology of Varanid Lizards). This book does suffice as an account of common species and might serve as a good introduction and general reference to monitor husbandry.

  3. I have already read the Bartletts book about Green Iguanas and liked a lot. This one too has beautiful pictures and useful line drawings. The text is easy and comprehensive, with lots of important tips. I think it makes a complete hobbist book.

  4. This book is very good and very complete in discussing various monitor lizards and basics about monitor for the beginner and intermediate keeper. Husbandry is mentioned in some detail. A good book to start with.

  5. Dick Bartlett is not only a top-notch photographer, but an excellent reporter. His friendly, succinct style covers the essential nuts and bolts of monitor and tegu care. If you are looking for a good beginner's book on this subject, start here.

3 comments about Cat Talk: 6The Secrets of Communicating with Your Cat.

  1. This is another great book from Sonya! It has helped me understand the animal world much better. Thanks to her book I am now able to better understand my cats and the animals around me. I help my family and friends with their animal problems now. I am very thankful to Sonya for helping me to better understand the world from an animal's point-of-view. I have no doubt that people can communicate with animals telepathically. If you are truly open to the idea, want to communicate with your pets, and have a true love for animals, then you can develop your ability to communicate with animals. Sonya tells in her book about the many animals she has encountered over the years; by telling people of these stories she has opened up the reader to what animals are like and how they perceive us. This book is truly a must for pet owners in order to better understand their animal companions. She tells ways to effectively get through problems that a person might be having with his/her pet and then gives helpful tips to help remedy the situation. The stories she tells apply to every pet owner. In the book, she has covered almost every animal you could possibly have. I recommend this book to anyone who has pets or works with animals. I give it five stars! Sonya truly is a gift from God!

  2. I really enjoyed this book, it make you understand more how cats think. It a great book for all cats lover.

  3. As a cat person who enjoyed Sonja's book "What the Animals Tell Me", I was looking forward to reading this book. I was not disappointed.
In this book, Sonja gives more details about how to communicate with animals and a lot of practical cat care advice. She fills in the gaps left in her life story by the previous book. There are, of course, stories about the cats Sonja has worked with. My favorite is the story of Rosie, a hungry, frightened, pregnant kitty rescued by Sonja's husband, Fitz, who is evidently as much of an animal over as she is. This book would be most appreciated by cat lovers who are open to the possibilities of interspecies communication.

5 comments about Living a Dog's Life, Jazzy, Juicy, and Me.

  1. After reading Cindy Adams' prior book about Jazzy, I was thrilled to see she had written this second book. It started a little slow but then lived up to my expectations as being funny, serious and sad. It was also exciting meeting celebrities through Cindy Adams and seeing a more personal side of them. Animal lovers will love this book.

  2. Cindy Adams is honest, caring, and humorous in writing about her two adorable pet dogs. This is simply a must read for all dog owners and lovers of the canine creatures.

  3. First of all, if you don't like little dogs or people who pamper and dress their dogs, this book isn't for you. Don't buy it; don't read it. Seriously. Don't say you weren't warned.

If you are a dog fanatic -- and especially if you like to dress them up, treat them like a member of the family, etc. -- you will love parts of this book. The book details how our dogs come to run our lives. We may not intend for it to happen, we may not want it to happen, but we let it happen and it does happen. And, in a certain sense, we like it.

If you're one of those people, you will smile as you read this book. There are some great stories, including bringing a new dog into the family, that ring absolutely true. And the writing is interesting and fast-paced.

What I didn't like was the constant name dropping. I'd never heard of the author until I read the book -- apparently she frequently meets with the rich & famous. Even so, it seems that every other page is about what famous person she whined to about this and what famous person her dog(s) didn't like and what famous person she took her dog to visit, and what famous person . . . you get the picture.

I guess it's her shtick. But for me it very much distracted from what was an otherwise enjoyable dog story.

  4. I loved the book and stories. However, you need to read her first book first. I stopped reading this one to read the other one and picked this one back up. I finished it in just days. I love my dogs immensely but I don't quite get to spoil them like she does. Our dogs love us unconditionally and I wouldn't have it any other way.

  5. Besides being guilty of beastiality, Cindy Adams is guilty of animal abuse. Dogs do not want to be dressed up in little outfits and hats. Dogs do not want to be fork fed chicken from Le Cirque. Cindy Adams needs to learn that dogs do not think they are people. Dogs know that they are dogs. Cindy's dogs think that she's a dog too.

Having said that. Dogs that wear clothes do not deserve to live. And neither do their owners.

5 comments about On the Trail!: A Practical Guide to the Working Bloodhound and Other Search and Rescue Dogs.

  1. Jan Tweedie has a very practical approach to training the trailing dog in language and examples that are easy to understand and put to use. One of the best books I own (in my ever expanding library about scent and scent dogs) regarding training a trailing dog and general information about search dogs. A real gem!

  2. Author Jan Tweedie puts her experience in law enforcement and search and rescue operations into practice in On The Trail!: A Practical Guide To The Working Bloodhound And Other Search And Rescue Dogs. Written specifically to aid those who seek to train a skilled and valuable search-and-rescue dog, one who can use its nose to find people who are lost or in trouble, On The Trail! covers the basics of training a working search-and-rescue dog, registration concerns, whether and how to approach advanced training such as searches for human cadavers or obstacle navigation, working with law enforcement and courtroom testimony concerns, maintaining a working dog's health, and much more. An expert how-to manual for professional trainers, police, and anyone charged with the responsibility of cooperating with a bloodhound or other dog to save lives.

  3. I felt that this book is an excellent addition to anyone who is involved with K9's The authour did an excellent job of researching the material for the book. The book takes you step by step in training a K9 to be used in Search and rescue I would and have recommended this book to my others who are involved with search units

  4. This is an excellent training book for beginners and advanced people! What a terrific opportunity for people to go step by step in the world of search and rescue. This book will help to save lives!!!

  5. Jan Twedie's book is the most comprehensive and thorough document available on the techniques of mantrailing. The advice given is very valuable to those who have the stamina and courage to train and work mantrailing bloodhounds. Highly recommended.

1 comments about Norwich Terrier (Comprehensive Owners Guide) (Comprehensive Owners Guide).

  1. This book was recommended to me by my breeder as the "go to" book for Norwich Terriers. I found it well-illustrated and extremely informative. It covers topics such as the history of the breed, what to get prior to your puppy's arrival, training tips, and development benchmarks. Our Norwich is now 3 months old and we refer to it often. - CTM

5 comments about The Pleasures of Their Company: An Owner's Guide to Parrot Training.

  1. Everyone with a parrot really needs to know how to communicate and train their companion bird. It will benefit everyone concerned. This book is excellent and easy to follow. My amazon loves to put his rings on spindle, wave hello while saying hello on cue, puts quarters in piggy bank, high five, and more. I learned how to teach him these tricks through practicing the guidelines in this book.

  2. This book, the third by Bonnie Doane, is a must for the new parrot owner or for those who have had a parrot for many years. I found this book to be an excellent guide when I first got my new parrot. I made sure I researched every book I could when I first acquired my two-week old baby parrot, and this book was one of my favorites. I found it very helpful in the training & learning process of handling my parrot as it matured and got older. There are chapters on obedience skills and training techniques for adult parrots, as well as how to work with baby birds, speech training, and trick training. There are 12 chapters filled with helpful advice that you should definitely be aware of.

I highly recommend this book. You should check out her other two books, "My Parrot, My Friend" and "The Parrot in Health and Illness." These are excellent books for your bird-related library in my opinion.

  3. This is an excellent book on the behaviour and training not only of parrots, but also macaws, cockatoos, budgerigars and other members of the parrot family. I have a 3 year old Hyacynth Macaw called Gervaise who has benefited enormously from my purchase. He never ceases to amaze me with his intelligence and agility. He is building up an impressive vocabulary and can do tricks like ringing a bell and eating seeds from my bumcrack. The fun's not all Gervaise's - as the title suggests, their company really does provide the owner with a great deal of pleasure, and this book can really enhance that pleasure.

  4. This book is very well written and can easily be used as a reference guide as well. This book lacks only in one aspect (colour photos) of actual birds since I love to look at pictures almost as much as reading the information. I would recomend this book to anyone thinking of getting a bird or someone who already has one and is acting up a bit. I haven't adopted a bird as of yet but it's only days away. (I can't wait to get the Umbrella Cockatoo home). A really great site (except it is a little negative but very informative to future Parrot owners is http://members.citynet.net/skydiver/parrots/parrots.htm. Check it out . I looked online for two months to make sure that I was picking the right bird for our family and everything you need to know is right there or there's links to it.

5 comments about Legends: Outstanding Quarter Horse Stallions and Mares.

  1. I purchased this for my own reference. A friend already has it and I wanted one for myself.

  2. Great detailed information and great pictures. Learned a lot about the old breed. Thanks.

  3. THIS IS THE FIRST OF THE LEGENDS SERIES THAT I PURCHASED.
IT IS EXCELLENT! I HAVE COLLECTED ALL OF THE LEGEND BOOKS AVAILABLE AND LOOK FORWARD TO NEW ONES. ALL VERY USEFUL INFORMATION AND MAKES FOR SOME GREAT CONVERSATIONS WITH OTHERS WHO HAVE BEEN AROUND THE QUARTER HORSE SINCE THE BEGINNING OF AQHA.

  4. IT WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF IT HAS INFORMATION OF HORSE MR CONCLUSION IN THIS BOOK

  5. This book provided the ancestry of the horses that started the American Quarterhorse breed. It was fun to take my horses' lineage and be able to trace it all the way back to the original King Ranch horses. I found out why my horse has such hard feet, why she likes to run so much, and found that she is the spitting image of one of her ancestors. I could hear the stories of her great grandsires and great granddams, the lives that they led, the places they lived, their temperaments, their quirks of behavior. I feel that I know my own horse better after seeing where she came from. I highly recommend this and the other volumnes of this series.

5 comments about The Complete Idiot's Guide to Dog Tricks.

  1. This was less than I had hoped for. Very simplestic. Guess I should have expected it. Idiot's Guide.

  2. Well written - cute tricks that aren't hard.... I took this book step by step and made sure my dog knew each one in succession. Tricks are built upon other commands.... - so it's not a 'fast book'.... sometimes it take a week to get to the next one. Great suggestions though.

  3. This book is written with clear insight and it trains dogs with compassion. It teaches training in steps that build upon each other, therefore creating less stress for you and your dog.

  4. I found the tips in this book to be useful. I am very impressed with the author and her knowledge of dogs. I especially loved all of the practical example and illustrations in the book. I highly recommend this book.

  5. This is a fabulous book for any one with a clever dog - and all our dogs are clever aren't they? Especially coming out in the summer, this is the perfect book to get for any kid who has a dog, but it isn't just for kids.
Ms Palika clearly explains the tricks step by step, starting with basic tricks and then expanding to make them all unique. Many of the tricks can be adapted to "real life" such as picking up toys. Some of the other tricks will make your dog the hit of any party.
A fun book at a reasonable price for any dog lover!
