3 comments about Samoyeds (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).

  1. I've done a ton of research on Samoyeds, Huskies and Malamutes, and this is probably the best book for the money that I have come across. It only cost me a total of I think $8.00 or so to have it shipped to my door and it contains a surprisingly lot of information for its small size. Seriously interested people will probably want to get another book to supplement this, but this is a really good place to start for someone interested in learning about Samoyeds. Its affordable, covers a lot of areas, and has a lot of color pictures. I would definitely recommend this book.

  2. This is a very informative books, that gives you all the essentials of keeping a Sammie in a clear and concise manner. There might be more comprehensive books out there on the subject, but this one is really god for the beginning Sammie-lover!

  3. Quite simply, the best guide to the Samoyed I've seen. It will be a welcome addition to the adoption kits we give to new owners of rescued Samoyeds! Regardless of your involvement- breeders, rescue, new owner, seasoned veteran - this book is a must have. It's well-written, informative, and contains plenty of helpful illustrations. You'll love the beautiful photographs! E.J. McWhorter, Central Ohio Samoyed Rescue

5 comments about Almost a Whisper: A Holistic Approach to Working With Your Horse.

  1. This is one of the better books on horse psychology. I have used methods outlined in the book and they work. Highly recommended.

  2. This is indeed a holistic approach. I have been with horses for over forty years and I have read so many new ideas about our relationship with horses. It is an honest book of an honest man, concerned with the wellfare of horse and human. I am sad I have not read this book 30 years earlier (it was not published then). My horses would have deserved it and my relationship with them would have been all the better for it.

  3. After reading several other books from trainers and horseman, I found Sam's book, wow! What a find. Sam has put into words what few other horseman can and in away that all will understand. Having worked with horses since he was a young man has given him wisdom to help both horse and man. His simple manner in which he uses in his book allows the reader to get the most from reading his book. I have learned more from his book than any other book, magazine or video I have reviewed. He has helped me to understand the horse form a perspective I never knew possible. This will be a book you will want to read over and over. This book has something for everyone that loves his or her horse. From the beginner to the advanced professional, you will learn a way of communicating that actually works. Communication that will open your eye to a new world for both horse and person, ENJOY!

  4. I had bought this book originally as a good all around read, but ended up needing a lot of its valuable information when I purchased a gelding at an auction. Something just made my hand go up, even though the horse reared in the ring. I thought I had brought home a mistake until I went back and started to re-read Mr. Powell's book. I even e-mailed him at his address for additional help. Needless to say, 18 months later, this horse is the friendliest, most willing-to-please horse in our pasture. The potential I saw him at the auction has come full circle thanks to the wisdom in Mr. Powell's book. Thanks Sam! This is a must read for all horse people!

  5. I have always wanted horses since I was a small child, growing up with my Uncle's horses. There has always been a connection between me and horses. I just purchased two of the most beautiful Arabian horses, later in life. My little boy has been abused and is 4 years old and is in training. When I purchased him, you couldn't get close to him and put a halter on him, and now he follows me arround and wants to be right next to me. My little girl is 2 and has always been loved and is really sweet. I spent two weeks bonding with my little boy and we have such love and communication between us that he is a different horse and really trust me. I bought this book and realize that as a novice, I did the wrong thing of buying 2 green horses. I felt something when I saw them and knew that we were ment to be together. I will tell you that I could not put this book down until I finished it. I realized all the things I was doing wrong....and all the things that I was doing right. I love my horses so much and they know it as soon as they see me. I would really like to meet Sam someday and learn more from him. I highly reccommend this book to everyone. I know that I should of bought older, and trained horses, but the love I have for my beautiful babies grows everyday. I know I need to learn....and I belive in Sam's way of training. I know I will be alot more wiser in what I do now....but I have patience and hope I will be a good partner and companion to the two best horses in the world.

5 comments about When Cats Reigned Like Kings: On the Trail of the Sacred Cats.

  1. Considering the august reputation of the author and the number of pages, I expected a much more scholarly discussion on this subject. I was disappointed to wade through so many personal stories of her cats performing typical cat antics. While cute to a degree, less would have been an improvement so that the real topic could shine through. The title promises much more than is delivered. Too many cutsie remarks and exclamation points detract.

Some fascinating information is included, and that did keep me reading, but one has to excavate for the good stuff. The interviews and descriptions of the places traveled are interesting and worth the time. Exploring some additional cultures would also have been appropriate.

However, I commend Geyer for adding to the anecdotal nonfiction shelves about felines.

Whle the book is not a total waste of time, be prepared for a lot of fluff if you're looking for the real story.

  2. I very much enjoyed reading this book since I am very much a cat person. I have a special interest in cats since I work at an egyptian museum and have done quite a bit of research on cats especially the Egyptian cat goddess, Bastet. I love the way Georgie Geyer humanized the cat and the research she put into the book. Not to mention the wonderful humor and the warmth in which she portrayed the cats. I loved seeing the cats in a different perspective and traveling with the author to unusual places that I probably will never see.

  3. This book is superb and the service from Amazon could not be equalled.

  4. I do not know if it was because I am a cat lover, but I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history. Ms. Geyer is an interesting author and has written a real page-turner. I thank her for making information which could have been dull bright and interesting. I now know more about the origins of my own beloved cats.

  5. Back in November, I read an excerpt of this book in Geyer's column and thought: I've got to get this!!
This book is well-written, and hooked me right from the beginning. Geyer's interest in the human-cat relationship takes her and you the reader to Egypt, Burma, Japan, and Thailand, plus her descriptions of the main cat breeds is helpful and informative. There are two sections of pictures, one section showing her own two cats the late great Pasha and her current cat, Nikko, as well as photos from her various travels. The second set shows the breeds of cats discussed in part two and all have a high 'aawwww' factor. Plus there is an appendix chronicling the evolution of the human-cat relationship throughout the world. All in all a great read!

  1. Guide to Owning a Persian Cat: Feeding, Grooming, Exhibition, Temperament, Health, Breeding (Guide to Owning)

  2. I think this book is a great Help to anyone thinking of purchasing a Persian.

It covers many, many aspects of the Persian breed. And the information is quite valuable.

I am a breeder of Persions.
I highly recommend this book !

  3. The only reason this book deserved a three-star rating is for the nice photography and the basic information. If you know nothing about Persians, and have never had one, then whatever you learn is a plus and you would probably benefit from this book. However, if you are experienced with Persians, you will probably find little here that you do not already know, or have not already read in other general cat care books. Granted, many cat breeds have some distinct characteristics, such as the tendancy of some Persians' eyes to "tear and run," and the extra grooming requirements necessary not only for Persians but for any long-haired cat. It is what you might call "Lesson 101 in Persian Education."

  4. Very informing book. I bought this before I got my persian to help me with the purchase. Beautiful pics. Told me what to look for in purchasing and about breeding.

4 comments about Canine Nutrition.

  1. this is one of the three best books out there on canine nutrition and a must have for anyone who is serious about cooking for their dogs or even just buying commercial brands. be sure to add this to your collection.

  2. This book is packed full of must know informatiion for today's dog owners. I have been a dog owner as long as I can remember, my parents breed collies. It seems though dogs have more health issues now. This book was very user friendly and informative. My current dogs seems to have more issues than any before him. This book has given me information to get him healthy and keep him healthy. Thank you thank you

  3. Overall, the book gives a good review of vitamins, minerals, etc and what roles they play in the body. I was looking for the recipes mostly but found them a bit weird, honestly. Psyllium husks were used in every recipe "for fiber." I prefer the recipes by Dr. Strombeck in his pet recipe book.

  4. I have been making home-made diets for my dogs for years and have several books on nutrition but this book is the one I always reach for first! It is easy to understand yet has lots of detailed information on nutrient requirements and recipes, along with chapters on diets for medical conditions and nutritional supplementation for diseases.

My copy is dogeared and highlighted and has lots of scraps of paper sticking out of the pages. It will take you a long time to out-grow this book.

  1. I also have the "Silky" in this series, which I thought gave me more information. But maybe it merely seemed that way because it was read first. I would have liked to have had more info on health. Nevertheless, worth the price I gave.

  2. WAS OK. NOT AS COMPREHENSIVE AS OTHER KENNEL CLUB BREED SERIES. DOESN'T COVER SPECIFICS IF YOU ADOPT AN OLDER DOG ETC.

  3. More info on the health problems and showing...Ok info on the daily care and inprotant info on training and puppy

2 comments about The Wild Woods Guide: From Minnesota to Maine, the Nature and Lore of the Great North Woods.

  1. no matter how much you think you know about the natural northern world, specifically flora and fauna, this book knows more. sure, we all know that a spider's webbing can be twice as strong as steel for its size but did you know that spiders can custom blend their webbing for different tasks? stretchy, sticky, tough..umm...buoyant..er ,well, other qualities relevant to spiders. its like a more basic, easier to understand kinda string theory.. sorry, slipping off topic here. this book is great, breezily written, funny even. get it, put it in the bathroom and in just 30 mins a day.. no,wait, that's the learning company..you will be able to amaze and confound all your friends from wood chucks to marine biologists with your arcane knowledge of the great outdoors. well, hey, its working that way for me.

  2. Having just lived through another l-o-n-g winter for the privilege of living in the northwoods, this book was like a breath of fresh air. From mosses to white pines, water striders to black bears, this very readable book covers most everything you're likely to find in the northern woods -- and there are even segments on clouds and constellations. One-stop shopping for all your info needs if you love the woods and are curious about its other inhabitants. Lots of little-known facts written in an intelligent and engaging fashion. An easy-to-use reference that even children could enjoy, with entries that make you want to check out "just one more thing." After buying it yesterday we had a long road trip ahead of us -- that sort of flew by as I read entries aloud to my husband. It would be a great addition to our cabin "library" on a pine shelf behind the woodstove, but I kind of think I'll keep it here at home, close at hand.

3 comments about Complete Pig.

  1. I collect anything with pigs and when I saw this book, I knew I had to purchase it. It has tons of very intersting articles as well as fun facts and adorable pictures. Whether you are a pig collector like myself or are just interested, this is the book for you. I give it a %110 and beyond.

5 comments about Love Heels: Tales from Canine Companions for Independence.

  1. I read Love Heels over a period of several days and was particularly impressed with the heart warming stories of the dog and human teams. One of the stories was about a little boy, whose short life was made bearable by the grace of his beloved service dog. None of us likes to think that our dogs will outlive our children, but some dogs have the great privilege of being there for people in a way that is unique and healing. The whole book is moving really, with stories about people from all walks of life who have survived and thrived in part because of the spirit of their canine companions.
If you already love dogs, or are involved in a service profession, you won't regret having this book on your coffee-table or in your study.
And as a physician who has a great interest in service and therapy dogs [...], I heartily recommend this book.

  2. What a wonderful organization...stories to touch hearts of all ages. We are currently raising a puppy for CCI and the experiences of the authors are especially meaningful.

  3. This book makes a great gift. It is a very nice looking book at a good price. The pictures are as touching as the stories. If you love dogs or just want to read stories about love and courage this is a "must have" book.

  4. Oh, wow! I highly recommend this book. I have been a puppy raiser for CCI since 1988, and this book absolutely captures the heart and soul of this wonderful organization. I have lived the puppy-raising part twelve times, so I especially appreciate the breeder-caretaker and graduate stories. The book not only reinforces the specialness of the bond between humans and dogs, but also gives you insight into how the lives of those who receive these awesome animals are forever changed. Buy it!

  5. This is a most wonderful book that captures that magical and intangible thing that makes the relationship between humans and dogs so deep. My partner lost her service dog this past year and we don't know when she will be able to get another. This book reminded us that other people know what that special connection is, too. I recommend it with complete enthusiasm.
