3 comments about Homeopathic Remedies for Dogs (Gb-046).
- I loved this book, it was basic, to the point - not technical. It's a great starting point. I only gave it four stars because he believes in vaccinations.
- I originally found this book in our library, and upon reading it, decided it was a MUST for our own personal library! Our family treats homeopathically and found it difficult to treat our dogs because of lack of information (in regular homeopathic books) that actually relate to them (dogs). The author goes into great detail about symptoms, illnesses, etc. and how to treat them. While most remedies are the same ones we own and use, we've found it necessary to expand our "medicine" cabinet to include several that we had never heard of. This is a truly wonderful reference book for any dog owner to have on hand. From puppies to geriatric dogs ~ behavior issues, drooling ~ you name it. Great book!
- In reading this authors chapter on Kidney disease,I find it rather disturbing to know that he recommends regular vaccinations. If he is a true Homeopath, then why is he unaware of Vaccinosis? A leading cause of Cancers.
While his subject matter is interesting,I find it hard to trust him now on any remedies he recommends.

5 comments about Training Retrievers for the Marshes and Meadows.
- Nice book. I chose the book because of the Amazon.com reviews. It appeared to be what my Grandson had requested and he seemed pleased to get it as a Christmas present. We will have to wait to see if the information in the book helped him with the training.
- I found out about this book in 1991 shortly after I had gotten a Lab puppy that I wanted to train to be a working dog.
I had read all the popular books at the time, but none made it clear to me - what I needed to make clear to my dog !!
I met a man on Compuserve who raised and trained working retrievers in the Midwest. He highly recommended this book, but it was difficult to find, and in those days we did not have "AMAZON.COM".
Anyhow, I finally got the book and my dog Molly became the best working dog I have ever had the pleasure to hunt with. She was nothing short of amazing at spotting birds down, and she could easily blind retrieve the ones she did not see fall (almost always a double).
This book also taught me the concept and importance of teaching "force training" for retrieving, and it indeed works.
Molly is 15 yrs old now and is "retired", but if she was physically able she would hunt with me tomorrow.
So my strong advice here is get this book if you have a young dog that you want to be well trained and a pleasure to hunt with. Also, well trained dogs make MUCH better and happier pets!!
-- Cain
- This book is absolutely fantastic. After reading numerous other training books and still having difficulty with my young dog I stumbled onto this book by accident. Spencer covers every aspect of training the puppy right through to advanced blinds and marks. His style of writing is very clear and his use of anecdotes helps to illustrate the real life ramifications of various techniques. Until I read this book I had great difficulty training consistent blind retrieves. Spencer's explanation of the correct use of conditioning flags has made it so much easier. I have read this book at least ten times and learn something new every time. I can't recommend it enough.
- James B. Spencer's Training Retrievers For Marshes And Meadows will hold a specific appeal for hunters who use retriever dogs in their work. Beginners are taught how to gain rapport and train dogs, from basic obedience to training for the hunt - and receive instructions particular not only to retrieving in general, but to the breed.
- Before, during and continuing with the training of my current yellow Lab, I have read quite a few books on the subject. I wish I would have had this one sooner! Easy to read and great instruction all in one book.

3 comments about A Photographic Guide to Conformation: New Edition.
- I bought this book for a reference while doing intercollegiate judging a few years ago. Although I learned nothing from the book's text, it was nice to use the pictures to study other structural traits.
The book does its job well - listing a few faults or good points for the majority of the pictures. It doesn't describe the traits in any detail, but an experienced horseperson wouldn't find this a problem. Intermediate riders might find the most benefit from this book, using it to strengthen pictures in their mind when learning about faults from other books or live horses. I can't see this book being overwhelming to beginners, but they might not have encountered some of the terms and colloquialisms that the author takes for granted.
I would have preferred more color photographs in the meat of the book; it would have made some of the older pictures more clear. Most color photos are "poster pictures" of different breeds and colors that seemed tacked on to the end of the book.
I did appreciate that some pictures were taken at angles. This made it a bit more useful applying studies of live horses to photographs.
- Being a somewhat beginner in the horse world, I was looking for a book that would help me in the purchase of a horse, and understand the issues of conformation. Some of the lingo used in this book is not American English, but European English, which is lost on me. The photographs are wonderful, but the descriptions - as said above - do fall short.
- This book showed several good examples of each conformation fault disscussed. The written descriptions accompanying the photos fell short. This book would make a good photo reference guide for an experienced horseperson. The lack of detailed descriptions describing common conformation faults would not help the novice.

3 comments about Blind Dog Stories: Tales of Triumph, Humor and Heroism.
- This book is a quick read. The stories touch your heart, especially if your
dog happens to be blind or going blind.
- This is a good, quick, read. We're going to adopt a blind dog from a shelter, so it was helpful to read about the amazing abilities the blind dogs have. It was also a good book for our kids, age 9 and 13.
- Excellent choice of stories; would love to know there are more planned (perhaps a series of such books, like "Chicken Soup..." series). My own wonder dog, Wiggles Blue Heeler, and I have our own story to tell that we are living!

1 comments about The Guide to Owning a Scottish Terrier (Guide to Owning).
- As a long-time breeder of Scottish Terriers, I first bought this book for myself, as well as several other same-type books. This book, however, I found to be very complete and thorough for new owners of Scottish Terriers. This breed of dog is not your everyday lab. and requires specific knowledge. I have a lot of confidence in this book that goes out the door with every pup I sell to a new Scottie owner. It offers all a new Scottie owner needs to know about the dog type, breed expectancy, feeding, grooming, and training, etc., as well as general dog ownership information. A strong five stars.

5 comments about Everything You Need to Know about Malt-I-Poo's.
- This book is poorly written and over-priced. It only took me a few minutes to read this pamphlet on Malt-a-poo's, and I didn't gain any useful insight into the breed. I'm sure that the author is knowledgeable about these dogs, but she didn't convey that in this publication. In fact, I was so distracted by the spelling, grammatical, and punctuation errors that I found it hard to read.
The book did have two positives though. I liked the pictures of Hilton's Malt-a-poos and the information about size of the dogs (often Malta-a-poos grow larger than either of their parents).
Before I read this book, I was considering also buying Hilton's book about puppy development, but now I definitely will not!
I feel this book was a waste of money.
- The author is extremely knowledgeable about Maltipoos, and has shared her knowledge and experiences. This has helped prepare me to be a Maltipoo owner.
- My first thought when I took it out of the packaging was "Are you kidding me?". But I thought that maybe even if the book was very small that it would be worth the $20 that I paid. Yes, there is some useful information that I may have had trouble finding somewhere else but the truth is, I have read a lot of this stuff online already so yes, I was a bit disappointed. I was looking to find something specific to malt-i-poos since it appears to be practically non-existent. Yes, I'm going to keep it since I am sure I can refer to it here and there without having to sign online and google the info BUT mostly, because I don't want to avoid the hassle of returns. If you want a quick, brief, guide this is ok.
- I bought both of Lynn's books as I was getting my maltipoo from her and I found them extremely helpful and VERY informative. I don't understand why there have been bad reviews of this book. It gives you everything you need to know about the breed and it also gives you information about maltipoos that only someone who has owned and raised a maltipoo would know. I refer back to these books every time I need some guidance with my 4 month old maltipoo. I love this book and Lynn's other book and I think that they are a MUST HAVE for anyone who is getting a maltipoo.
- I completely agree with the prior review. This book is certianly not worth over $10. Don't waste the money.
