3 comments about 100 Simple Secrets Why Dogs Make Us Happy: The Science Behind What Dog Lovers Already Know.
- A light, and quoting another reviewer, "uplifting and pleasant" read, but very little science, just a brief statement citing a study at the end of each, essentially one-page, story.
What I don't like about this book is the layout. Almost all the stories could fit on one page but the publishers used a lot of white space, started each story quite a bit down from the top of the page so that they would stretch over two-pages. Essentially, this book is about 112 pages of text. I would rather they had designed the book with the stories on one page even if it meant a blank page across from the story. In fact, this blank page could have been the spot for the scientific evidence to back up the story ... story on one page, scientific support on the other.
What I liked about the book was the human-dog connection in these stories, but not enough to buy the book. Although, if I received this as a gift, I would keep it.
- The book takes dog actions and relates them to humans. Great for reviewing yourself and your actions
- This is a tiny book. The kind your parents put in your stocking at Christmas. But it's also charming, cute, and sure to make you smile.
There are one hundred short chapters in this book, mostly only one page, each one with a title like "Dogs Take Us Walking" and "Families With Dogs are Closer", and each with a short story about dogs. It's uplifting and pleasant. At the end of each short chapter the author includes a study that has been done on dogs. Here was one I especially liked: "While there is a significant long-term effect of dogs on our health, cats have no effect on us" (p 68).

4 comments about When Good Dogs Do Bad Things.
- This book was an easy read and I read it in a couple of hours. It had great information that I have found very useful with my 16 week old puppy. I have learned that I need to be more patient and understand that some dogs will take a little longer to come around but it is a worth while endeavor. I have seen results with my pooch over the past week or so but it takes time, patience, and a full commitment to training your pooch to be well behave and an active member of your family. This book is not a quick fix but an aid to help you understand what has to be done to bring up a happy well adjusted pooch. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting a dog or who is serious about training their dog to be productive and not destructive.
- I really liked the format of this book and how it breaks up the reasons why a dog could be misbehaving. However, I'm not one to advocate jerking a choke collar because I believe there are less violent methods of correction--they do indicate hitting is bad. A better read would be Catch Your Dog Doing Something Right, or Reading the Dog's Mind, or any Stanley Coren book.
- This dog is a very loveable dog But all she wants to do is chew every thing. she knows she does wrong. But cant break of this habit. It is a rotweiler an a liottle over a year old?
- This text helps you identify your dogs personality type and then work on specific problems according to his/her needs. This book emphasizes reconditioning as well as introductory training. It makes use of various tools such as the choke collar, shake can, and lead. I have had good success with this book with cocker spaniels to great danes. I have had timid to aggressive dogs. These tips for reconditioning focus on on-lead techniques but not exclusively. The topics in this book that I have used are: housebreaking, barking, biting, fence fighting, and carpography. This text is the one that I refer to over and over again throughout my dogs lives. When you have 3 great danes that are siblings raised entirely without a mother to guide them, you need help to guide you and this book has it all.

1 comments about Animal Tracks of Minnesota & Wisconsin (Animal Tracks Guides).
- We borrowed this book from the local library just because my children (5 & 4 yrs old) picked it out. To our surprise, this book quickly became a favorite and my children (and husband) just didn't put it down. We live out in the country, and every day the kids would be out in the yard with a magnifying glass looking for different tracks and comparing to the ones in the book! Soooo, I gave this book 5 stars for the simple fact that there are lots of tracking books out there, and I'm sure some are more complete, however this is extremely easy to use and even children can enjoy exploring the outdoors! However, let me add that my hubby is an avid trapper, and he found it just as great - so it's not TOO simple either. I've only seen the MN & WI version, but I'm sure the other states that are covered in different versions would be very similar. We highly recommend getting your own copy as we did, and start exploring!

- Not happy at all. the item is only 2" X 2", can't give this as the gift I intended. For the price I never would have paid it had I know it was so incrediably small.
- When you want to really show your pet your love...make home made dog biscuits! This kit is perfect, just enough recipes and comes with dog shaped biscuit cutters!

5 comments about Collies: How to Take Care of Them and to Understand Them (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- I thought this book was great. It was packed with a whole lot of information for such a tiny book. I would recommend this book for anyone who has a collie!! It has everything.. from grooming to little specifics about the breed. This is definately one of the best books to have as part of any dog manual collection!!
- As a previous dog owner, but new to the Collie breed, I found this book very helpful. Collies are just "different" from other dogs, and their care and training has to be treated as such. Information included in this book was a huge help to me as a new collie owner. If you've never had a collie before and are thinking of adding one to your family, buy this book.
- This book has very little information for someone who already understands how to take care of any dog. Don't waste your money.
- this is a pretty good book. I learned a lot from it. It really helps you learn about collies before you get one. I wouldn't have known how to take care of my collie if i wouldn't have read the book. It's a good buy and if you want a collie you should buy this book. It will help a lot.
- What a delightful experience to read this little book. It contains information critical to every owner of a Collie, no matter how long the person has had this beautiful breed. Mr. Sundstrom has touched on virtually every aspect of the Collie from heritary health problems to rescue groups dedicated to finding homes for those dogs who have been abandoned or surrendered to Humane Societies. Had this book been available years ago, as a Collie breeder, I would have given one to each puppy buyer.
Congratulations to Hal Sundstrom and to Amazon for making this wonderful rendering available.

5 comments about The Border Collie: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.
- This book was a bit of a disappointment as I was looking for some specific info on Border Collies and I felt as if any breed's name could have been substituted where they used the name Border Collie. As a general beginners book on dogs and dog training it was OK and would be worth a few bucks to buy it. Other than some nice photos of Border Collies it had nothing in it specific to this breed.
- This bookis extremely helpful but sometimes confusing. It teaches you how ot train, groom and how much your breed needs in food maters. This book will definatly help new owners fighure out why there dog does what it does, and how to fix the situation
- What a disappointment.
The majority of this book is about dogs in general. If you're looking for information specifically about the Border Collie breed, as I was, don't waste your money. You can get 90% of what was in this book by picking up any book on dogs, and you won't know any more about Border Collies than you did before you read it.
- I first read this book when I checked it out of the library and I totaly loved it. I had checked books out before about other breeds, to find out which one would be the best for me, and all of the other books were so full of things that didn't understand that it made it hard to choose. But when I read this book, not only did I find out that the Boder Collie was the right dog for me, but I also was able to understand everyting the author was talking about. So if you're looking for a book that is easy to understnad and yet informative as well I would recomend this book, it's great!
- I found this book at my local library and, a big fan of border collies, was eager to check it out. I was pleased by the full-colored photos instead of black and white ones. The book provides true and top notch information, and the author reflects on her own experiences with border collies several times. There are chapters on feeding, grooming, training, behavior, and equipment. If you need a border collie book, get this one. It's the best one I've ever seen.

5 comments about Amazon Parrots Complete Owner's Manual.
- I also found this book extremely outdated (the original version was written in 1987 and there has been an enormous amount of research and experience with captive parrots since then that has revolutionized the way parrots are perceived and kept), with much information that is contradictory, confusing or incomplete. This is indeed a "dangerous" book for someone who knows little or nothing about Amazons (or parrots in general) and is looking for advice and information. Examples: In considering "Amazons as pets" the "warnings" are incomplete and/or euphemistic (most Amazons will outlive their care-takers; they not only "soil things", they are outright destructive if not constantly supervised; owning an Amazon, or any parrot, is a major committment to a labor-intensive responsibility that is time-, energy-, money- and attention-consuming and should not be undertaken lightly); the "Advice for buying" is terrible!! and any parrot book written these days, especially for the American market, is not complete if it does not mention the thousands of parrots that are given up every year to shelters and rescues - many of these birds are desperately in need of a good home and can be adopted by serious people; under "Dangers for your Amazon", fumes from Teflon pans in the kitchen are not mentioned and these can be speedily fatal; the diet advice is simply awful!; advice to breed to preserve the species that are threatened with extinction is completely wrong - parrots bred in captivity do not contribute in any way to preserving the species, as is now recognized by conservationists.
At least one of the addresses given under "Information" is completely out of date; a large number of the references have nothing to do with Amazon parrots, but are about budgies, African grays or Australian parrots - Amazons, as the name implies, come from South and Middle America.
Yes, the pictures are lovely, but the incorrect and misleading information make this book one that should be removed from the shelves.
Anyone looking for good up-to-date parrot information can best consult the Internet - there are a myriad of excellent sites, with forums for questions. Here you can also get recommendations for books that will really be helpful, informative and up-to-date. Be sure to look at many RELIABLE sites to get a good over-view the pro's and con's of parrot owning before beginning - we are talking about living, intelligent beings here, not playthings.
- The book not only provides scant and outdated information, some of it is erroneous, and quite a part of it harmful. I am quoting the ones I can remember: amazons, like all parrots, do NOT need to be fed grit; not only cherry, but a lot of other types of fruit tree wood are poisonous to parrots, including apple and apricot; acorns and celery are both harmful to parrots, and should not be fed to them. All in all, this is a guide to quickly and painfully disposing of your pet, and ought to be avoided. I don't give it one star mainly because it has some pretty pictures.
- After purchasing just about every Amazon Parrot book out there and being disappointed, I found this one. Instead of pretty photos and general narrative fluff, this book has good solid information for anyone interested in the species. Thank you.
- As a new Amazon owner I was looking for a species-specific book that would give me detailed information about my blue-front. Unfortunately this book seemed superficial, simplistic, and somewhat out-dated (with some information actually contrary to what is widely recommended now). It has some wonderful pictures, and fragments of useful species information, but overall I think there are better general care books available (certainly more detailed), and this book's Amazon-specific information was sketchy.
- I bought this book to help me learn more about the amazona genus that I was considering as a pet. But what I found was a book written before 1992 which was around the time importation was banned and hand raising and breeding birds within the United States had became more common. This resulted in very little information about todays common amazons. Also, this book described all the the precautions one must take to ensure the saftey of your wild caught bird, precautions that are now just plain useless! Though if what you are looking for is a picture book about amazons, this is almost a good book for you.

- This book is excellent as it is not the typical generic product that you sometimes see. This book is filled with useful information, positive reinforcement training and wonderful tips.

4 comments about Old English Sheepdog (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).
- This book is an excellent resource for anyone who is contemplating getting an Old English Sheepdog. It has a wealth of information on the breed and I found it a great help in preparing for our new puppy.
- A great book for those who own anb OES or thinking about getting one. There is alot of information about these dogs and this is the best I have found
- Well, the American Kennel Club has found a book that merits it's seal of approval. If all of their breed books are this good, they'll put everyone else out of business. It is that good. Details about the breed, pluses and minuses, basics of training and healthcare, tailored to the breed. Just great. I would recommend this series to anyone who is a first time dog owner, or who wants a comprehensive book about their breed.
I've read a lot of breed books, training books and magazines, have dog breeders and trainers in the family, and this is the best breed book I've seen.
