2 comments about Blessing of the Animals: A Guide to Prayers & Ceremonies Celebrating Pets & Other Creatures.
- This book is an absolute delight! The prayers and blessings are uplifting and honoring to our furred, finned and feathered friends. The anecdotes and ceremonies are wildly entertaining! This book is a must read for anyone who loves animals!
- Blessing of the Animals is a priceless collection of ceremonies and blessings to the emerging field of Animal Chaplaincy. As Chair of the Interfaith Association of Animal Chaplains, we immediately added it to the syllabus in our training program for new Chaplains. Personally, I heartily reccommend this wonderful book to anyone interested in animals and spirituality. Whether you are in an animal-related profession, are crazy about your companion animal friends, or know someone else who is, you will find inspiration and practical uses for the many delightful blessings in this book. Blessing of the Animals is a MUST READ for all animal lovers, spiritual seekers, and those who serve them.

5 comments about On the Trail!: A Practical Guide to the Working Bloodhound and Other Search and Rescue Dogs.
- Jan Tweedie has a very practical approach to training the trailing dog in language and examples that are easy to understand and put to use. One of the best books I own (in my ever expanding library about scent and scent dogs) regarding training a trailing dog and general information about search dogs. A real gem!
- Author Jan Tweedie puts her experience in law enforcement and search and rescue operations into practice in On The Trail!: A Practical Guide To The Working Bloodhound And Other Search And Rescue Dogs. Written specifically to aid those who seek to train a skilled and valuable search-and-rescue dog, one who can use its nose to find people who are lost or in trouble, On The Trail! covers the basics of training a working search-and-rescue dog, registration concerns, whether and how to approach advanced training such as searches for human cadavers or obstacle navigation, working with law enforcement and courtroom testimony concerns, maintaining a working dog's health, and much more. An expert how-to manual for professional trainers, police, and anyone charged with the responsibility of cooperating with a bloodhound or other dog to save lives.
- I felt that this book is an excellent addition to anyone who is involved with K9's The authour did an excellent job of researching the material for the book. The book takes you step by step in training a K9 to be used in Search and rescue I would and have recommended this book to my others who are involved with search units
- This is an excellent training book for beginners and advanced people! What a terrific opportunity for people to go step by step in the world of search and rescue. This book will help to save lives!!!
- Jan Twedie's book is the most comprehensive and thorough document available on the techniques of mantrailing. The advice given is very valuable to those who have the stamina and courage to train and work mantrailing bloodhounds. Highly recommended.

4 comments about Australian Terrier: A Comprehensive Owner's Guide (Kennel Club Dog Breed).
- This book has been extremely informative about Austrailian Terriers. A new breed for me, it gives information through each chapter of how to be, how to train and what these darling little dogs need and want from a new owner. From coming home the first day to vet trips, training tips, house breaking tips. Just an excellent source of information.
- I am very pleased with the response time in which ordering, shipping, and receiving was handled. I received the books I ordered in less than a week w/o any problems. I will use this form or purchase again.
- The book is impressive and all Australian Terrier owners should have one. It covers most aspects of the Breed - puppy care, everyday care, health care, training, showing and History. It has lots of colour photos of Australian Terriers in most situations. It is well written, easy to read, and well set out. I especially liked the three consecutive pages which illustrated the Australian Terrier's physical structure, internal organs and skeletal structure, all illustrated on the same dog and very easy to understand.
Grooming is hard to explain in a book - the breeder should give a guidance when selling the puppy. If the dog has a harsh coat (as it should) any shampoo, other than a conditioning one, will do, as I have found with my terriers.
The book has an Index (many books don't!). It is a high quality book, I am really pleased to have a copy.
Gillian Bartlett,
Teraustralis Australian Terriers, South Australia
- This book has very little specific information about the Aussie and a lot of general dog information better presented in other books. For example, I was looking for grooming information on stripping and was told to ask a breeder. The issue of bathing a hard coated dog was given the answer, bathe the dog as you like.

5 comments about THE COMPLETE PAPILLON (Book of the Breed).
- I really enjoyed the information in this book. The author is English, so some information is about showing in the UK, but the breed information is relevant to both countries. I received my book quickly, and am greatful that Amazon can offer these type titles that aren't always available at the local bookstore.
- The book had some good information on the breed. My biggest complaint is that the pictures were all in black/white, paps are beautiful dogs and the pictures did not do justice to the breed. I felt that the book dwelled too much on past and present champions, which I am not really interested.
Overall I liked the book and will keep it as reference guide.
- This book had some useful information, but I felt is was geared more towards breeders than new papillon owners. It goes into great detail about the pedigree and desirable qualities of a show dog. I was hoping to learn more about training, grooming, and general care.
- I was looking for a book that would tell me the car and training, and although this book did have some, it was not to the extent I was looking for. I had read previous reviews saying what a great book this was for new Pap owners, but being a new Pap owner, it still gave way too much extranious information and even I knew some of it was incorrect just from talking to the few breeders I had talked to.
- basically the book covers the breed type, and covered all I wanted to know about the breed. The one thing is that there is too much of old breed lines which would not be of use to one outside the UK

3 comments about Hedgehogs (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- I would not reccommend this book to anyone! A lot of the information was wrong and completely inaccurate!
A good book to get about hedgehogs is The Hedgehog - An Owners Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet. Written by David Wrobel with Susan A. Brown, D.V.M.This book is filled with lots of helpful info!
- I couldn't disagree with the previous reviewers anymore! This book is simply smashing, I mean how often does a chap come across a book about Hedgehogs, and then how often do you find a book with this much information. Really, a bang-up job! As for Cedar wood chips, I will have you know I have raised 5 consectutive hoggies on cedar beds, and they still chase my cat around the house like a whirling dervish. This book is smashing, and I would advise anyone interested in raising hoggies to read it.
- I don't know where to start. This book recommends activities that I consider to be catastrophically bad for hedgehogs, like keeping them on cedar shavings, which can cause respiratory failure. I just can't recommend.

2 comments about Prince among Dogs, A: and Other Stories of the Dogs We Love.
- This is a fabulous anthology containing twenty-eight real life escapades of loving canines starting with Dr. Prince being there for his adopted family including the cat when they were ill. The entries are fun to read for dog lovers though the quality of the writing varies; as some are over written and some boring, but each reminds the audience of their "significant other". Intermingled throughout are "paw" quotes from celebs. For instance Anne Tyler provides the first one on how dogs view people: "... we come back from a grocery store with the most amazing haul-chicken, pork, half a cow. They must think we are the greatest hunters ..."; my Chauncey, who flew with me like the dog in Snakes On a Plane does for sure as she has her knife and fork ready when we come home with food. Readers will think of their "Real Life Lassie"; mine was Max, a Toto with psychotic fears except if he thought I might be in danger; whereas my spouse might choose flight, unrequited loving Max chose fight. Then there is Charlie who arrives at the house when Pixie is dying; reminds me of when we took Deuce for his first vet visit the same Rusty went for his last. Readers will find their own personal Jack London Buck tale amidst this heartwarming collection as pets constantly show there "For the Love of Man" and woman and children. Clearly this compilation of true life canine-human relationships targets dog lovers; as M. Acklan puts it "... dogs give us everything. It's the best deal we ever made". Pooches make us better people whereas the latter is rarely true.

Compiled and edited by Callie Smith Grant, this collection of short stories submitted by dog owners captures the reader with anecdotes of pets that made a difference in their people's lives. Although occasionally slow paced, the book is generally well-written and is a quick read that can be put down after each chapter without feeling like any part of the story is lost. Celebrity quotes in highlighted boxes are scattered throughout the pages and add to the casual and friendly feel of this book.
Heartwarming and uplifting, the stories in A Prince Among Dogs share the deep emotional bond that forms when a four-footed friend touches the life of someone in need. With unconditional love and patience, the dogs in this book change the lives of the people they come into contact with... some over a lifetime, and some in just a few hours.
Throughout the book you will meet a variety of canine characters, including a tiny blind mongrel who mourns the loss of her master to cancer, a smiling spaniel-collie cross who acts as a personal trainer, and a "three-legged survivor" who helps to heal a broken family.
Contributing authors include individuals from diverse backgrounds including a dog trainer, freelance writers, a marketing director, and a social worker, among other professions. Although their personal histories may be drastically different, each contributor is a linked by a common thread - the thread that connects them to man's best friend.
Armchair Interviews says: A nice tale for dog lovers-and you know who you are!

1 comments about The Everything Yorkshire Terrier Book: A Complete Guide to Raising, Training, And Caring for Your Yorkie (Everything: Pets).
- The title is self explanatory. This book will not be too helpful to a beginner as it explains everything with very little graphics and it is difficult to visualise aspects such as the grooming of the dog. I thought the toilet training bit was lacking as well and served more as a sweeping generalisation of known information than anything that would be truly helpful to a novice.
On the plus side, the writing is pleasantly light, although this does not make up for the lack of illustrations and depth.

4 comments about A Modern Horse Herbal.
- I really enjoy using this book. My 29 year old gelding has found new vigor from the suggested herbs, and my son's 2 year old mare is in peak condition thanks to black oil sunflower seeds and other recommendations. I recommend this book to anyone with horses who's interested in helping them to stay happy and healthy into old age.
- The herbs that Hilary Self writes about really do work. I've used this book with great results, bringing back to ridability an old horse that was lame and unridable for 5 years, calming another that spooked too easily, helping sinus congestion on another...and more. Not all viable horse herbs are covered in this book. Nevertheless, this excellent reference points the equestrian and veterinarian in the right direction to those that the horse will eat and digest most readily. Horses can be finicky, but she writes about the herbs they most find palatible.
- This is my first book I have been able to read on herbal remedies for horses. It is conscise, with a section describing many popular herbs and their uses, along with a section of common aliments and their treatments. The information provided on other forms of alternative therapies is a little skimpy. But it is called Modern Horse Herbal, and the herbal information is excellent.
- Hilary Page Self is a horse owner who has researched, collected and used the traditonal herbal remedies on horses. Many of the materials are readily available, and/or obtainable. A Modern Horse Herbal is written in an easy to use and clear style. Being British she also includes American terms to avoid confusion. Though only 175 pages, it is full of valuable information. It is especially useful, because she encourages the owner to work together with modern medicine, along with a qualified veterinarian.

2 comments about Breaking Bad Habits in Parrots: How Responsible and Sympathetic Parrot Care Can Prevent or Remedy Problem Behaviors.
- Uses insights on parrots' lives in the wild to help parrots in captivity. Many photos of beautiful parrots.
- Greg Glendell knows his stuff, as evidenced by this and all of his other writings. Just do a google search on this author and you will be amazed to find all of the most sensical remedies to problems that stem from having a wing clipped bird in captivity. His advice seems so simple but is deep seeded in ethological and ornithological principles. He is the UK's only full-time pet parrot behaviourist and the world would greatly benefit from several of his clones. If you are experiencing challenges with your companion parrot, buy this book and explore Mr. Glendell's website for more information. I can't sing his praises any louder!
