3 comments about Bearded Dragon (Success with a Reptile Pet).

  1. This book is great for beginners just starting out with keeping beardies. Well-illustrated with many beautiful photographs. Easy to understand and covers the basics of each aspect of keeping dragons. Fantastic and detailed info on feeding. This book is a great companion for the other book I purchased called "The Bearded Dragon Manual" by Philippe De Vosjoli.

  2. This book offers lots of info on the care, health, and maintenence of bearded dragons. Also, it is a very specific guide for feeding, tank setup, breeding, incubator setup, and raising hatchlings. This book also points out the behavioural characteristics of bearded dragons and what they are "saying" to you or another bearded dragon. I found the courtship section to be most helpful when my boyfriend and I wanted to see if our beardies would co-habitate in a friendly manner. This book has photographs of different color phases of bearded dragons, and would make a great coffee table book.

  3. I have a bearded dragon named Mojove, she is very healthy and strong . I have decided to breed bearded dragons , I still have lots to learn but this book helped me alot. It explained the basics of breeding to the very complicated things like building an incubator. My favorite thing about this book was the photography, it showed everything about bearded dragons. Mothers burrowing eggs, different breeds of bearded dragons etc... . I love bearded dragons, mine is my pride and joy , this book helped me understand the habits and thinking of bearded dragons. It explained diet for bearded dragons and their mating behaviors, their housing and how to raise baby beardies. I highly recomend this book &, a bearded dragon. Thanks a lot! P.s- Leonardo Dicaprio owns a beardie named Blizz.

5 comments about Born To Win: Breed to Succeed.

  1. Laymans genetics is a good term for this book. I am 4 years new to the dog world and this book laid out important information in a way that kept me interested! Most books are either so complicated as to be boring or so simple that you come away with nothing but verification of something you've already read. Not this book - it is perfect and the advice is invaluable. I will keep this book forever!

  2. Patricia Craige, who ranges from top Norweigan Elkhound breeder to top dog show competitor, shares her insights in the canine field to a new audience eager to eat her every word. Why do I give this author such high acclaim? For three simple reasons:

a). Mrs. Craige shows the reader many examples of dogs who have succeeded inm both the show ring and the whelping box. Many dogs, ranging from the top-producing dog of all time to the dog with the most Best-In-Shows (the highest honor at any dog show), are shown, with in-depth study on how the greatest of dogs made their way to the top.

b). The book is very well understood thanks to the authors' personal experience. Mrs. Craige is an owner-handler, the lowest on the totem pole in the canine realm. However, one of her glorious Elkhounds became the top dog all breeds in the year 1970. This astounding tribute to the hard work and dedication she put into breeding and raising top dogs is followed up with a string of top dogs of any breed. She also bred, owned, and handled the top Elkhound of all-time and one of the top winning hounds of all-time with sixty-six all-breed Best-In-Shows. Her last big winner was shown from 1993-1995, daughter of the top winning Elkhound and two-time Westminster Hound Group winner (Winning at Westminster is the highest honor any owner, handler, or breeder can aspire to). Despite all of this, the author's down-to-earth writing style solaces the reader, allowing the reader to thoroughly enjoy the book.

c). Why don't you tell me? THere are so many reasons to applaud this book. I am sure that if you were to add it to your collection, you'd find your own reasons to back up the notion that this book truly is BORN (err, published) TO WIN!!

  3. A magnificent source of history, technique, philosophy and guidance for the serious dog breeder and exhibitor. Examines history and trends in many breeds. Acquaints you with the greats on four legs as well as two. Not a light read, but definitely worth the effort.

  4. This book has taught me and has had me understand just what it takes to be BORN TO WIN :BREED TO SUCSEED a must read for all dog people of all experiences. The way Mrs. Trotter has wrote this book anyone can understand just how to get the job done.

  5. A great book, full of important information for breeders. One of the real strengths of the book is the section on genetics and inheritance. I've read a reasonable amount on gene theory but this book really clarified how things work. I also really like the section on litter evaluation. Ms Trotter's style is emminently readable, and certainly one can't argue with her experience in breeding for success!

5 comments about The Simple Guide To Planted Aquariums (Simple Guide to...).

  1. After reading several books about the same topic, This one is easy, simple and clear to understand, as the title expose. It introduce you as beginner or expert in an understandable language and help you step by step on what you nned to know about the hobbie. If your are plannig to have a planted aquarium, this is a MUST READ BOOK.!!!!

  2. This book was too complicated for the beginner and too superficial for everybody else. While all the photos of plants contained more than one type of plant, the caption failed to identify more than one type and it was never clear which plant the caption was referring too. Many of the more complicated topics were treated so superficially as to be of any use to anybody and should have been left out entirely

  3. The authors have done an excellant job of describing water chemistry and the reasons various filtration systems work. pH, KH, hardness, nitrites, and nitrates are all covered. Testing and correction of water deficiencies are described very well. The explanation of Kingdoms of platnts, animals, etc. is very enlightening. The different catagories of plants are also covered as well as their use in an aquarium. Fish that are compatible with a planted aquarium are also suggested.

  5. I've kept planted aquariums for a number of years, but was intrigued by this book because one of the co-authors is a well-known advocate of low-tech planted tanks.

The format of this book is VERY nice. The writing is friendly and inviting, and there are lots of pretty full color photos. Personally, I didn't learn a whole lot of new information, but it was a pleasant read nonetheless. I would certainly recommend it to someone just entering the hobby, or someone looking for an overview on planted tanks, especially if they're seeking some guidance on what type of planted tank is the best fit for them - high tech, low tech, biotope, etc. All around, a very good presentation, and an excellent invitation to exploring planted aquariums!

5 comments about The Guide to Owning a Leopard Gecko.

  1. This book has many nice gecko pictures (some not of leopard geckos)except for the brutal pictures of geckos being eaten by creepy predators like gigantic spiders and scorpians. Don't worry, the pictures are in the back (or more specifically, page 55). Because of those pictures, it's not the best book for young children that don't understand "The Circle Of Life".
Besides the pictures, it has the perfect amount of information for old and new gecko owners. The author talks to you like a best friend and each chapter is useful in some way.
    1.Choosing A Leopard Gecko
    2.Housing Leopard Geckos
3.Food and Water (WARNING MICE LOVERS: This has pics of baby mice being eaten by geckos. Don't worry, baby mice for food is optional.)
    4.Breeding
5.Health (and how to cure the problems if they happen)
6.Other Geckos (this is where the bad pics are!)
    And a glossary.
Besides the interesting pics that can break a heart and the health problems that will make you a tiny bit nervous for your gecko's health, it's a brilliant book that makes you feel like a friend of the author and a good gecko owner!!!

  2. The information is great minus one the, the handleing section. When i got my leopard gecko, i never read any books. I went to the pet store and talked to them. Everytime i was there i held my Emeril (thats my geckos name). OK, so yes they have sensitive tails and sharp nails, but they dont get caught in fabric that easily. I have had mine for 3 years and have held him and let him walk all over me and my bed and teh counter. and he is fine. still with his tail, and all his fingers. So please, hold your gecko and ignore tht section!

  3. I've just recently perchased a leopard gecko and bought this book with high expectations! And they were fullfiled! Great book

  4. I orignally purchased this book for my brother who is an avid leopard gecko fan and wanted to breed his geckos. I found it very informative from a beginners standpoint, but I thought there would be more on breeding and less on 'other types of geckos'. Either way, it was my bit of fun learning for the day!

  5. I purchased this book and the first of my three leopard geckos 18 months ago. It has served me very well with clear practical guidelines for setting up a gecko-friendly environment, providing good day to day care, identifying and dealing with health problems, breeding. The book also provides interesting background information about geckos. It is well-written and nicely designed with many attractive color photographs. Ray Hunziker appears to have the well-being of both geckos and owners in mind: He tells you that geckos don't like to be handled and suggests you handle them as little as possible. He provides a wide range of choices for the environment and the care of geckos, accommodating owners' differing esthetics and budgets.

My copy of the book went to school with a grandchild and has not returned, so I am about to purchase a second copy. One of my female geckos is laying eggs, so I need my Hunziker.

This an exceptionally useful and attractive guide.

2 comments about When Your Pet Dies: A Guide to Mourning, Remembering and Healing.

  1. This is a neat little book, very special. I think it would be very helpful for those facing the loss of a pet. As a veterinarian, dealing with owner grief is an important part of my practice. I'm happy to recommend this to all of my special clients who may experience the trauma associated with pet loss. Well done!

  2. As an animal lover myself, as a certified hospice bereavement counselor, and as another author who's written about pet loss and specialized in pet loss counseling since 1992, I loved this book. Like all the rest of Alan's books, this one is clearly stated, clinically accurate and beautifully written -- and it comes from the heart of the author's own personal experience with pet loss. Because Alan Wolfelt is so very well known and respected in the field of death education and counseling, I believe his book about pet loss will do more than help bereaved animal lovers. I think it will lift the experience of pet loss into the mainstream of professional grief literature where it rightfully belongs, and that alone is a cause for celebration. For many years I have felt that uninformed and insensitive mental health professionals can do more damage to disenfranchised bereaved animal lovers than any member of the lay public can do, because they should know better -- and it is up to those of us who know the agony of pet loss to teach them. I want to thank Alan for writing this book, and I wish him every success in its sales and distribution. For my part, I've already listed it under the BOOKS ABOUT PET LOSS category on the Articles and Books page of my own Grief Healing Web site (http://www.griefhealing.com), I've recommended it to both pet loss support organizations with whom I consult, and I will continue to recommend it to my clients and participants in my pet loss support groups as well.

5 comments about Great Cat Stories: Inspirational Tales about Exceptional Cats (An Amazing Stories Book) (Amazing Stories).

  1. This was a fantastic book by the highest standards. It was truly a joy to read. Especially high praise for the Simon story, it made me bawl! Amazing how touching a story can be, especially those of us familiar with the bond between humans and animals. Eagerly waiting for any other books by Roxanne Willems Snopek!

  2. A wonderful collection of tales that will touch the heart. Particularly the tale of Simon, I found myself sobbing like a baby at the end, which is generally NOT a manly thing to do. The way Snopek write these stories, you can almost feel the characters come out of the pages and touch your heart, too bad they don't live long enough for those of us that love cats. I particularly loved it because of its Canadian content and origins. Well worth the price.

  3. Incredible Tales About Exceptional Cats is a wonderful book for people of all ages. The variety of stories can make you laugh or bring you to tears. It also can make you appreciate and love your precious pets more and inspire you to take care of them as your most precious treasures., and not to disregard them as soon as they immerge from being kittens to adults. Unfortunately there are still some people who do that because they have neither the patience or the love to care for these little ones for the rest of their lives.

  4. I was given your book "Amazing Cat Stories" as a gift and absolutely loved it! I wanted to thank you for your wonderful talents and allowing me to go back in time. I had to send my "Buddy" to kitty heaven this past August and I can honestly say that was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. After 15 1/2 wonderful years of companionship I felt lost without her. After reading your book, so many great memories came flooding back to me. I would defintely recommend this book to any animal lover or for that matter anyone with a heart! Thank you and keep up the great work!!

  5. A wonderful collection of short but inspirational stories, reaffirming the indisputable importance of animals in our lives - both for them and for the human race. Made me cry - and made me laugh! A great learning tool - for all ages. I loved it!

2 comments about Guide to Owning a Pomeranian: Puppy Care, Grooming, Training, History, Health, Breed Standard (Re Dog Series).

  1. Excellant book for the first time or well seasoned pomeranian
owner. Lots of tips and information in layman terms. Being
a pomeranian breeder I intend to recommend this book to everyone
    as a must have.

  2. Many pet books that are currently on the market are full of fluff and sound like they could be about any breed of dog. However, Ms. Ellmann has written a wonderful guide to Pomeranians. She highlights on the history of Poms, the proper way to choose a pup, housebreaking, training, grooming, and general health care of Poms. She also gives great information about how to show your dog if you desire to do so. It's not a guide that goes very in-depth, but in my case, it's a great book to get started learning about Pomeranians. One of my favorite features of this particular book are the stunning pictures that are throughout it. I definitely recommend this Guide To Owning a Pomeranian!

2 comments about Guide to the Mammals of Pennsylvania.

  1. An excellent field manual that elaborates on all the mammals of Pennsylvania from the common Eastern Cottontail to the elusive Martin and Fisher. Information includes animal description and photo, reproduction, interesting facts, adaptations, food, habitat, prey, predators, biology, reasons why the mammal is endangered or threatened, and behavior. Each description is in easy to understand language except for certain biological vocabulary. This is a must-have for hunters, Boy Scouts, students, environmentalists, and any interested resident of Pennsylvania. It is especially helpful to teachers of students of wildlife including those training Envirothon students.

  2. Merrit's Guide is a very usuful book for those interested in mammals within the state of Pennsylvania. This book is easy to follow. The descriptions are straight foward and easy to understand. The diagrams and pictures are also very useful. I highly recommend this book.

5 comments about The Dog Pit - Or, How To Select, Breed, Train And Manage Fighting Dogs, With Points As To Their Care In Health And Disease - 1888 (History Of Fighting Dogs Series) (History of Fighting Dogs Series).

  1. Due to Amazon's refusal to remove this book - The Dog Pit - Or, How To Select, Breed, Train And Manage Fighting Dogs, With Points As To Their Care In Health And Disease - 1888 (History Of Fighting Dogs Series) (History of Fighting Dogs Series) by Richard, K. Fox (Paperback - Jan 9, 2006) - I have resigned my account and will not shop at this heartless organization.

  2. Peace and love for all living creatures in this and all the worlds. Stop (ab)using animals and live a healthy life without suffering. WE are ONE. We are the animals and the animals are we. If we hurt them we hurt ourselves. Peace be with you

  3. While I find dog-fighting horrible, I think this was a fairly interesting read - and a great view into the mind of people who justified the sport and objectified these animals (especially in a time which was much more tolerant of these kinds of sports - so it's even more of a confident "just the way things are" subtext, all about the dog-fighting without apologizing for it). So to start off with, it's ignorant to believe that the only thing that people use a book for are it's intended meanings. Keeping books around, even (perhaps especially) with views we disagree with, is important. To simply not sell a book (or try to pressure a store - by boycott, for example) because we disagree with it is ignorant, and inspires ignorance. It's just totally asinine to feel threatened by knowledge or information that doesn't jive with us.

So yes, I totally disagree with everyone who has a problem with Amazon on this. It's rediculous to say that by selling a book the company is promoting the views of the author and can be identified with those views. If this were true, how could Amazon sell a book on Christian apologetics, and one on the argument for Atheism? Ann Coulter and Noam Chomsky? Francis Schaeffer and Sartre? This isn't a PETA bookstore, it's a bookstore, and part of having a successful bookstore is having as many books as possible (unless you're making a bookstore with a certain view in mind- Communist, Vegetarian, Christian, etc). And part of having as many books as possible is having books which share views or are based on presuppositions which one doesn't agree with.

Back to animals, Amazon also sells books promoting the vegan lifestyle, and nobody complains. Is this where we're at as a society, where we boycott a store just because they sell a book with values we disagree with? You all sound like a bunch of old housewives burning Beatles albums...

And if you really think that selling a book makes one guilty of promoting a certain world-view, that's a shame - because they've been selling "Mein Kampf" here since the beginning, and where were you then? So the truth comes out - you care more about your dogs than Jews!

"Jews? Yeah, that's fine - just don't hurt our wittle puppy-dogs!"

  4. I wholeheartedly agree with Nicolaj. First of all, it's not even that easy to find this book using Amazon's search engine. So it can't be said that Amazon's promoting dogslaughter. Second of all, why aren't dog worshipers like Jamie equally concerned about Barnaby Conrad's "How to Fight a Bull"? Or the countless cookbooks featuring recipes for meat? Or the myriad guides on fishing, hunting, guns, and the like? Oh, you say, but cooking meat, fishing, hunting, owning guns, and whatnot are legal. WELL, GUESS WHAT? SO IS SELLING BOOKS, D-BAGS. Get off your high horses. Amazon's clearly in the right here.

  5. I disagree with the notion that by selling this book, Amazon is condoning dog fighting. This is just as ridiculous an assumption as saying I necessarily support dog fighting by buying this book - perhaps I am just interested in the history of the sport..how it came about. Or perhaps as an adamant anti-animal cruelty crusader, I'd buy it to educate myself on the topic. People need to stop confusing Amazon.com with their local mom and pop bookseller handpicking novels they like for their valuable and limited shelf-space. This is basically a book warehouse that delivers the largest selection of books at a low price. They are not in the business filtering the books they sell based on whether they like/dislike, agree/disagree with. And I think we need to stop expecting/asking/or caring whether or not amazon filters their books for us. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

5 comments about Ball Python Manual (The Herpetocultural Library. Series 300).

  1. I purchased this book sortly after getting my first ball python. Let me tell you, I would be lost without this book. It has everything you need to know and everything you want to know about being a great ball python owner.

  2. It has been argued that there is free and more fresh information on the web.
Well, that's exactly true. But the point of this book is to provide the amateur with a handy, basic, simplified guide to homing this pet. The basics of these herps hasn't changed. This to-the-point reference with good color photos only costs a couple bucks-well worth it.

  3. If you have your mind set on buying no other snake except the ball python, then this is your target. Philippe De Vosjoli goes over everything you need to know: origins, appropriate lighting and tanks, what you can do if you can no longer keep your ball python, pictures of different ball pythons (this includes regular, albino, etc), and most important of all, diseases of ball pythons. He even writes about the famous ball python that was known to live 47 years and some days (and even then, they still don't know how old the python is). Philippe also confirms that, yes, even large snakes can fit in surprisingly small tanks. I've had my ball python for 3 years and he still lives comfortably in a 20 gallon tank. But don't let my boring cliche review make you buy this book, just look through some pages at a store and decide for yourself. But regardless of that, I strongly recommend this book. Later.

  4. There's nothing new for advanced keepers here, but for those starting out, it's a cheap way to get basic care information. And it's an albino BALL python on the cover, not a Burmese as stated by another reviewer.

  5. You can find a lot better and more up to date info on the web. Not particularly useful or informative, though there's a few nice pics. Check out The Complete Ball Python by Kevin McCurley for a real ball python book.
