2 comments about The Tao of Cow: What Cows Teach Us.

  1. The Tao Of Cow: What Cows Teach Us is a unique, fun, and occasionally inspiring compilation of seventy-four amusing, unusual photographs of cows accompanied by "words of wisdom" from our bovine friends. Classic sayings from our four legged friends such as "Stampede not through life, lest you miss the majesty of the world around you.", and "Sometimes the grass is exactly the same color green on the other side of the fence.", and "Turning the other cheek often puts your best hoof forward." translate exceptionally well into advice germane to we two legged humans.

  2. A guide to being a "cow hand". Inspiring to say the least

5 comments about The Best of James Herriot: Favorite Stories of One of the Most Beloved Writers of Our Time.

  1. If you like James Herriot's Stories, this is a great compilation. It arrived quickly and in perfect condition.

    thank you!

  2. A very bright and beautiful book, with nice pictures and side articles, which help you know more about animals described in the book. All stories are easy to read and full of sparkly humor and affection to animals and nature. Reading it you may easily find yourself laughing over things at one page, and crying at the next one. This book is equally great for both children and adults.

  3. If you love animals and you haven't read James Herriot then you simply must! These stories are so full of humour, sadness, joy and lots of plain common sense and wisdom that you will love every minute of reading them. It is amazing to read that the author had such a long struggle to have his work published that he almost gave up. What a loss to the world that would have been! The story of his life is told by his son in the book "The Real James Herriot" - make sure you read that one also!

  4. What can one add to the already vivid detail of the life of Alfred Wight? Fortunately nothing except the illustrations for those of us with little perception of what the farming community and the towns around Yorkshire were like in the 30's and 40's. The fact too, that it's in hardcover will ensure it's permanent place on your bookshelf of treasured writings.

  5. Even though the book was used, it was in excellent condition. The pictures throughout help to make this book a very good purchase for the money. James Herriot is a wonderful storyteller and the reader finds himself/herself able to have the experience of almost being there in person.

1 comments about Getting to Know Your Chinchilla (Getting to Know Your...).

  1. This is a good simple introduction book about chinchillas and their needs; simple & easy enough for older children & adults. I think it is necessary to follow thru with a more detailed book if a person is considering getting a chinchilla or need to care for a chinchilla, but this book will give you the basics to decide if you want one. I keep my copy near my chinchilla in case I'm not around and someone wants to know a little about my Lullaby.

5 comments about Encyclopedia Of Exotic Tropical Fishes For Freshwater Aquariums.

  1. I HAVE WANTED THIS BOOK SINCE IT WAS PUBLISHED, AND WHEN I COULD
GET IT FROM YOU, I TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY. I FIND IT TO BE THE BEST
OF REFERENCE BOOKS AROUND TO DATE. THANK YOU.

  2. I enjoyed the book immensly. I read it in one day cover to cover all 900+ pages. Very informative and great pictures of fish. I have been a hobbyist for 20 years and I still learned something from it.

  3. The author doesn't even include the temperature to keep the fish.

  4. I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.

  5. Unlike many previous Tropical Fish books from the Tropical Fish Hobbyist publisher that were not much more that an unorganized child's picture book, this Encyclopedia is well oganized and has a great common name and scientific name index. A desciption of the fish is on the left page with two corresponding pictures on the right page which makes for easy reading. I would rate this book 5 stars if the descriptions were more detailed. It leaves out temperature range, PH range, sexing information, etc. even though there is sufficient room in the description area for about 40% more verbiage. I recommend this book to be used in conjunction with the 4 Volume set of the Baensch Aquarium Atlas which provides much greater detail of each fish species.

4 comments about Living With a Beagle: Book with Bonus DVD (Living With a Pet Series).

  1. This is a Great book about Beagles. It is not just another dog book. I adopted a beagle mix 8 months ago and I wish that I read this book before. It perfectly describes every aspect of a Beagle's life.

It even includes some (though limited) information about Health Care issues. The only thing it missed is how to deal with the occasional "Reverse Sneeze" attack.

It includes a Training DVD that will give you pointers on dealing with Beagle issues.

It is a great Book for anyone who is thinking of getting or owns a Beagle. It is a quick read (128 pages) and a good Beagle reference book.

  2. This is an excellent book about beagles by someone who has been directly involved with the breed for many years. Since this author is also a veterinarian, this book is written with professional acuity. Breeders especially will love this book as it gives good practical advice on breeding their hounds and finding others who do.

Good general care such as vaccinations and regular checkups is included. I recommend this book for anybody who owns this delightful breed. I love beagles!

  3. this book is really helped me to understand my beagle. i love it and recommend it and training your beagle. i was able to teach my dog to sit within five minutes and he still does it.

  4. "Living With A Beagle" is an excellent new book about beagles, not your run of the mill "boilerplate" dog book. The author has been involved in beagles for many years and is also a veternarian! I was particularly pleased to see the information on choosing a reputable breeder, and how to determine if you are dealing with one when purchasing your beagle pup.
Due to her medical background, there is also lots of up to date info on vaccinations, disease, and even doggie first aid. I most heartily reccomend this book to any one who owns, or expecially anyone who is thinking of getting a beagle!

5 comments about The Feline Mystique: On the Mysterious Connection Between Women and Cats.

  1. I wanted to read this book to further explore the question posed by the title and thought there would be some answers. If you have never read any books about cats and their history before, then there is much scholarship and lovingly done research in this book and that does make it worthwhile. She is obviously well-meaning, sincere and loves cats. However, the book doesn't really explore the "mysterious connection" in any interesting or conclusive fashion. Sadly, too, her writing is a bit clunky, repetitive and formulaic, especially in her various interviews. It felt like a research paper that someone suggested could be made "more interesting" with interviews with female cat owners. I just thought it would be a better book. The book on this subject has yet to be written.

  2. Not a particularly entertaining read. It reads like a thesis paper, scholarly and ponderous. Felt like I was doing homework.

  3. This is a great book, especially for those that would like to know WHY so many wonmen are adopted by cats! We never really own a cat, nor should we and I think women understand this, as explained in the book. Cats are part of the family and because of that, the bond it strong. This book helped me to understand why.

  4. This book has been very insightful for me and some of my friends (this was a great gift item!). What I found most intriguing was the reconstruction of the make-up of "The Old Cat Lady" myth. It makes sense that it was built out of confusion, disdain, and the urge to make women feel repressed.

The stories presented here are very enjoyable, and I found myself retelling them to several friends. It's nice to realize a bit of a community here.

I thought this book was going to be totally unrelated to most of the other books I've been reading lately that are about Wicca. I was pleasantly surprised to find a little blurb about Wicca in chapter 3. I am definitely glad for the positive coverage, the more informed people are about various ways of life, the less bigoted the world will be.

  5. A great book for any women who loves cats. It tells about the very apprent female and feline love affair that's gone on for thousounds of years. It's really informative and interesting. It will make you feel closer to the special feline in your life. Remarkable book.

5 comments about Cockatiels (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. I am a recent cockatiel owner and this book helped answer many of my questions. I refer to the book often and it has been invaluable.

  2. Though I have owned three Budgies before, I had never previously owned a Cockatiel,(I recently bought two) so I bought this book to learn a little more about them. It was a good, basic book, but I would not recommend this book to a seasoned owner, as they would almost most certainley not learn anything new. I would, however, recommend this book to a first time bird owner, as they would learn a great deal.

  3. I'm a new cockatiel owner my husband got it for me for a birthday present actually early birthday present. I have read and re read the book over and over again. I still enjoy it.Also I look for information on cockatiels on the internet so I feel pretty well set on information I need.I got the bird on August 13,2001 from a breeder in town. He's a emerald cockatiel which is a recessive gene mutation. His name is Tristan Jade and I call him "Jade" for short.I have really enjoyed him tremendously :)Cockatiels are amazing birds! This book has all the things I needed to know.If you miss something then you can look it up in the index at the back of the book or read the pages over. You will see something you missed.

  4. If you've owned cockatiels for a long time, this book is not for you. But if you're just beginning, like me, this book gives a great overview of all the things you need to consider when buying and taking care of a cockatiel. This book gives you basic information about feeding, maintenance, and characteristics of this great bird. By giving a brief and user friendly introduction to cockatiels, the author allows you to find the areas which require additional research based on your situation. Overall I'd say this book deserves an A++.

  5. For some great advice email me at humorgirl86@hotmail.com. I have owned a cockatiel for 8 years and have alot of expierience. This book is informative on housing, feeding, breeding and healing. It has great pictures but, it's not the pictures that make the book it's the words! It doesn't go into great detail about everything. It hardly has a page on training and that doesn't even help if at all. Sure it may seem good but once you read it, it really isn't that good at all. I say that you should go to the pet store or book store and actually read the book or scan it to make sure that it has what you want. Petsmart and Petco are great pet stores that have plenty of books and all the needs for a cockatiel.
