1 comments about The Guide to Owning a Miniature Schnauzer (Re Dog Series).

  1. This book gives good insight into what you can look forward to when owning a mini of your own. I had my schnauzer for 11 years from when I was 8 to 19. My sweet dog had to be put to sleep because of health problems though. In tribute to him I can say that owning a schnauzer will greatly imrpove the quality of your life. Read this book, learn what to expect, then go out and get a mini of your own and enjoy the never ending love that this dog will bring you.

5 comments about The Dog Pit - Or, How To Select, Breed, Train And Manage Fighting Dogs, With Points As To Their Care In Health And Disease - 1888 (History Of Fighting Dogs Series) (History of Fighting Dogs Series).

  1. Due to Amazon's refusal to remove this book - The Dog Pit - Or, How To Select, Breed, Train And Manage Fighting Dogs, With Points As To Their Care In Health And Disease - 1888 (History Of Fighting Dogs Series) (History of Fighting Dogs Series) by Richard, K. Fox (Paperback - Jan 9, 2006) - I have resigned my account and will not shop at this heartless organization.

  2. Peace and love for all living creatures in this and all the worlds. Stop (ab)using animals and live a healthy life without suffering. WE are ONE. We are the animals and the animals are we. If we hurt them we hurt ourselves. Peace be with you

  3. While I find dog-fighting horrible, I think this was a fairly interesting read - and a great view into the mind of people who justified the sport and objectified these animals (especially in a time which was much more tolerant of these kinds of sports - so it's even more of a confident "just the way things are" subtext, all about the dog-fighting without apologizing for it). So to start off with, it's ignorant to believe that the only thing that people use a book for are it's intended meanings. Keeping books around, even (perhaps especially) with views we disagree with, is important. To simply not sell a book (or try to pressure a store - by boycott, for example) because we disagree with it is ignorant, and inspires ignorance. It's just totally asinine to feel threatened by knowledge or information that doesn't jive with us.

So yes, I totally disagree with everyone who has a problem with Amazon on this. It's rediculous to say that by selling a book the company is promoting the views of the author and can be identified with those views. If this were true, how could Amazon sell a book on Christian apologetics, and one on the argument for Atheism? Ann Coulter and Noam Chomsky? Francis Schaeffer and Sartre? This isn't a PETA bookstore, it's a bookstore, and part of having a successful bookstore is having as many books as possible (unless you're making a bookstore with a certain view in mind- Communist, Vegetarian, Christian, etc). And part of having as many books as possible is having books which share views or are based on presuppositions which one doesn't agree with.

Back to animals, Amazon also sells books promoting the vegan lifestyle, and nobody complains. Is this where we're at as a society, where we boycott a store just because they sell a book with values we disagree with? You all sound like a bunch of old housewives burning Beatles albums...

And if you really think that selling a book makes one guilty of promoting a certain world-view, that's a shame - because they've been selling "Mein Kampf" here since the beginning, and where were you then? So the truth comes out - you care more about your dogs than Jews!

"Jews? Yeah, that's fine - just don't hurt our wittle puppy-dogs!"

  4. I wholeheartedly agree with Nicolaj. First of all, it's not even that easy to find this book using Amazon's search engine. So it can't be said that Amazon's promoting dogslaughter. Second of all, why aren't dog worshipers like Jamie equally concerned about Barnaby Conrad's "How to Fight a Bull"? Or the countless cookbooks featuring recipes for meat? Or the myriad guides on fishing, hunting, guns, and the like? Oh, you say, but cooking meat, fishing, hunting, owning guns, and whatnot are legal. WELL, GUESS WHAT? SO IS SELLING BOOKS, D-BAGS. Get off your high horses. Amazon's clearly in the right here.

  5. I disagree with the notion that by selling this book, Amazon is condoning dog fighting. This is just as ridiculous an assumption as saying I necessarily support dog fighting by buying this book - perhaps I am just interested in the history of the sport..how it came about. Or perhaps as an adamant anti-animal cruelty crusader, I'd buy it to educate myself on the topic. People need to stop confusing Amazon.com with their local mom and pop bookseller handpicking novels they like for their valuable and limited shelf-space. This is basically a book warehouse that delivers the largest selection of books at a low price. They are not in the business filtering the books they sell based on whether they like/dislike, agree/disagree with. And I think we need to stop expecting/asking/or caring whether or not amazon filters their books for us. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

3 comments about Aquarium Fish Breeding.

  1. I have purchased several other books on general fish breeding over the years and then a professional breeder recommended this book. Well I must say that it is the most comprehensive general book of its kind - full of delightful illustrations and lots of technical detail. The author clearly "knows his stuff" - from actual breeding, to building fishrooms to producing live foods.

    I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

  2. I bought this book shortly after reading Mr. Hemdal's Advanced Marine Aquarium Techniques (a book that I've found to be very useful and informative). I am very pleased with his Aquarium Fish Breeding, as well. Whatever your skill level or motivation for breeding, you'll find invaluable insights in this comprehensive resource. A great choice for freshwater and marine breeders alike.

  3. As the author of this book, I'm obviously a bit biased, but this book is the only one on the market that fully covers all aspects of fish breeding. Marine fish, freshwater fish, invertebrates and plants are all covered in detail. I wrote this with intermediate aquarists in mind, so both beginners and experts may also find some "cross-over" in the material.

If you want to propagate home aquarium fish, invertebrates and plants, this book is a must-have!

3 comments about Reptiles & Amphibians for Dummies.

  1. This book does quite a good job at covering a lot of great information about herps (turtles, tortoises, snakes, lizards, frogs, toads, newts, salamanders, caecilians, and even the non-pet herps crocodilians, amphisbaenians, and Rhynchocephalia) and things that ever herper needs to know to have a happy healthy pet. Topics include keeping your herps in an outdoor cage, tank, or pool, what kinds of plants to put inside of an indoor terrarium, who eats what (or, more likely, who eats whom), breeding, how to determine a herp's sex, zoos with great herp collections, how to get involved in one's local community, common health problems, how to transport one's herps, and what to do if you need to get rid of your herp. In the middle of the book is a section of nice color photos of some of the more popular varieties of pet herps, such as the painted turtle, corn snake, water dragon, veiled chameleon, horned frog, and fire-bellied newt. It finishes with an appendix running down the basics (diet, behavior, origins, etc.) of some of the more popular herps, such as the kingsnake, Greek tortoise, fire salamander, leopard gecko, bumblebee poison dart frog, and aquatic caecilian. The only shortcomings I noticed in the book were that there isn't a huge amount of species-specific information (though this book is only meant as a general guide, not something covering every single thing about all of the herps in the pet market; that's what species-specific books are for!) and that it recommended the pet store as the place to get frozen/thawed prekilled rodents for one's snake. It would have been better had they talked about some of the businesses who breed rodents and then euthanise them before freezing them and selling them in bulk, such as RodentPro, Mice on Ice, and Mice Direct. Unless I knew that a pet store had gotten their prekilled prey from such a reputable company, I wouldn't exactly trust their prekilled rodents, given how a lot of pet stores aren't known for top-notch treatment of their animals! It also would've been nice had they mentioned some of the companies that breed and sell insects for lizards and amphibians, like Cricket Ranch and Timberline Live Pet Foods. But overall, this is a really good guide to get the first-time herper started, and as one reads more literature on the subject and interacts with fellow herpers, one will learn about the things that this book overlooked or didn't go into a lot of detail about.

  2. very thorough and also humorous. one small disadvantage, species specific information is very limited(though snake selection is acceptable). this, and a species specific book will give you a perfect referance with a new pet.

  3. We have a California kingsnake and two leopard geckos. We've gotten some other books on these reptiles, but for basic advice the "Dummies" book is the best so far. Very good at explaining what each species is like so you can get an idea of how the animal would work out for you.

2 comments about HOPE FOR HEALING LIVER DISEASE IN YOUR DOG.

  1. I have a cocker and found she had hepatitis quite by accident (she didn't act ill). Over the next two months her condition deteriorated despite multiple trips to the vet. She had lost 7 pounds and wouldn't eat. I took her to a specialist vet who gave me a very grave prognosis. I decided with nothing to lose I would give this book a try. Six months later her blood work was completely normal and she acted like a puppy again. Now it has been one year and you would never know that she is ill. I have her on the stew recipe and even put my other dogs on it as I knew even though they weren't ill it was better for them than store bought dog food with all the chemicals, etc. I have noticed such an improvement. Coats are better, temperment is improved. Plus happy and playful. Thanks Cyndi for writing this book I know you saved this dog's life.

  2. I have a 4 year old ausie sheperd/heeler mix that we just found out has advanced liver disease. The vet thinks that the rancher that we rescued her from had poisoned her. I read the book the day I received it and have followed the menu for about a month. I had her blood tested and the results were amazing, her levels show that the disease is in a holding pattern and that she seems to be getting better. I shared the book with her vet and she thought the book was "great" and that I should follow the tips in order to make my dogs life better. This has been the best investment that I have made. If it helps my "Abby" to live longer, it's the BEST!!

1 comments about Rottweiler: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).

  1. A great book for anyone who wants to understand more about Rotties but doesn't want to have to look at a dictionary to understand every other word. This book covers their history, their temperment and behaviors, how to care for your Rottie, and how to train your Rottie the simple commands. The training segment is the most informative. It walks you through how to crate train and how to give commands and even provides step by step pictures.

2 comments about Hamsterlopaedia: A Complete Guide to Hamster Care.

  1. This book is very detailed and up to date regarding hamster care ranging from basic care and health concerns to breeding and showing hamsters. Because the book is detailed it may not be reader friendly for younger children who own hamsters than other hamster starter care books on the market featuring simpler formats. It has some very nice color illustration sections outlining different varieties of hamsters. I think it should definitely be in a hamster owners library for reference.

  2. I've had a number of hamsters over the past several years, and have looked through a good many hamster books to find various information about caring for them. Unfortunately, a lot of the ones at the pet stores are often out of date and can even include misinformation. However, Hamsterlopaedia is neither of those things, and though it took a bit to find it, I'm glad I did. This is an amazingly detailed book that not only covers the basics, like how to house and feed your hamsters, but it even goes into hamster biology and the most common health problems to watch out for. It also provides information on breeding hamsters, including caring for a mother and her new babies, and not only includes information on Syrian hamsters but dwarf hamsters as well. Most of the book is text, but there are a good number of photo pages as well, especially to illustrate the various colors and types of hamsters. Whether you've just gotten your first hamster or you've been caring for them for years, this book has plenty to offer. I would highly recommend this book and I really appreciate the authors' work in writing it.

5 comments about From Birth to Backing: The Complete Handling of the Young Horse.

  1. Coming from a person that has been riding and training horses for 21 years, I think this book was very well written. He explained exactly how to do things, the rationale for doing them, and then recapped key points at the end of each chapter. It keeps your attention and makes you want to continue reading. This is a great book for people who are raising and training their own horses. I highly recommend it.

  2. I was searching for a book which would follow the same principles as Monty Roberts (author of "The Man Who Listens to Horses") and Cesar Millan (whose television show is the "Dog Whisperer"). I didn't expect to find another book on horse training so quickly which matches their psychological techniques as precisely as this book does!

It appears that the reviews on this book are determined by what the reader is expecting from it. I personally will rate a book as being great when it instructs in a logical manner, contains good sense, and works when put to the test. Rare is the book that can tell you everything there is to know. This book seems to cover the basics to help one to understand the mindset of horses and that is very important, especially for younger horses since they're in their highly influential years.

One word of caution: If someone appears to be copying another's ideas, don't forget how possible it is for more than one person to be capable of coming to the same conclusions on their own.

  3. Young horses can be scary when you have only dealt with trained horses - even green ones and problem horses are easier to work with because you already have a common point of reference.
Young untrained horses don't react the way you always think they should and they have different development stages just as young humans do - their behavior will change in each stage and you need to expect this. This book prepares you with telling you what is "normal" at what ages and how to deal with these everyday behavioral changes and problems that will crop up when raising your own horse. Books covering 6months - 3 years are hard to find and this was the best I found at covering the usual challenges you would face and showing you how to be a firm, kind and confident leader. This book is short and easy to read in one day, easy to use as a reference but I don't think its meant to be a one complete source - just a good starting point to get you on your way. Yes you can find bits of this information from other trainers, yes this book is not big or complete - but it is a good introduction and I still go back to it again and again.

Young horses are a blank slate and as close as you will come to the wild horse mind without adopting a Mustang. Once you have reared a baby or two, you will never relate to any horse in the same way again - and it's a good thing.

Combine with "Imprint Training", "Bringing up Baby" and "Right from the Start" for a complete reference collection on raising foals to young horses to be good and happy citizens.

  4. While no longer a fan of Monty Roberts, I found this book very interesting. It is written for people who don't have access to a round pen. Richard did an experiment & made sure he was the only one that ever handled his 2 foals. He started them on a lunge line, and I think it was quite a few months later before he backed them & found that they were carrying themselves on a loose rein from the beginning of riding, which really impressed me. Lots of great photos. Sorry if this sounds infantile but it's late & I read this quite a while ago & couldn't believe there wasn't a review. I am definitely going to read this book again.

  5. At first i was slightly put off by the review that was entitled "not worth a penny" as it was the most recent, however i carried on and read all other reviews and how glad i am. It was fantastic, a real bible, my horse and i have benefited hugely from the information given. I can only think that "Not worth a penny" was having a bad day.

i can't wait to read richards new book, unlock your horses talents.

4 comments about Schnauzers.

  1. This book was suggested by my breeder and I have loved it. It has beautiful pictures and is a great reference guide.

  2. dr frye,s little book on schnauzers is packed with information from the history of the breed, through to purchasing the puppy, house and obedience training and health care.Being a veterenarian and an owner of schnauzers which he obviously loves makes this inexpensive yet so comprehensive little book a delight to read. i am very happy with the purchase....regards peter kershaw (western australia)

  3. This book changed our minds in buying a Schnauzer. We've got two now.

  4. This is a very simple book, and doesn't give any real guidance unless you've never owned any dog before. It's an easy read, but if you're looking for real insight look elsewhere.
