5 comments about Great Dane: Model of Nobility (Howell's Best of Breed Library).

  1. I bought this book because I was considering getting a Great Dane. I wanted to study up on the breed before committing to having one. It was good because it did bring up both good and bad things about the breed. Danes are not for everyone. However, I wish it would have had more info on everyday living with a Dane and not so much on breeding. And yes, I did get a Dane.

  2. BUY THIS BOOK! I had purchased and read over a dozen books in preparation for bringing my puppy home, and this by far is the best.

The section on choosing a breeder is wonderful, and has some very important information you need to know before you buy a Dane from someone.

Bottom line, get it, read it, keep it for reference.

  3. I loved this book. I learned enough in the care section to save at least one trip to the vet (normal stuff that doesn't seem so - callouses for big dogs). This book was fun to read, in addition to being so informative. Great for better understanding my Great Dane.

  4. This was a very informative and helpful book. The Author provides keen insight into the care, responsibilities and phsyche of the Apollo of dogs.

  5. This book answered all my questions about temperment, exercise and medical issues. I also really appreciated the balanced view - all the up and down side of owning a Great Dane from puppy to old age and death. Thanks to Jill for providing excellant information - I'm sure our new Dane will apprecitate it when he/she arrives!

5 comments about The Rhodesian Ridgeback: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is an extremely intelligent canine full of fun, love, and stubburness. They live to love and be loved back and in return they will be your best friend, and family protector. An excellent family dog as they are very good with children. It takes a special person to raise a Ridgeback as they are very headstrong at times and are not for everyone. The author of this book covers everything you will need to know before you decide if a Ridgeback is for you.

  2. not really what I expected from the book. I could have used a few more prior reviews to let me know that I was actually looking for a book with more information on raising puppies and nuances inherit to this breed of dog. Good book for a true overall picture of the breed, but to much other non-essential information tossed in

  3. I enjoyed this book to learn the history and concerns of RR's. It is a very good introductory book. The author is professional about the breed. I recommend this book to anyone considering a RR or just getting one.

  4. I thought the first 6 chapters of the book were good, the first few great. However as you progress through the book the knowledge it presents is geared towards all dogs, to a point where I don't think that a RR was mentioned in the final few chapters, it was general knowledge about dogs.

  5. I have owned one Ridgeback who passed away a year and a half ago, and now currently own my 2nd. I have several other books about the breed and really enjoyed Eileen's book the best. It does repeat some of the info I have in other books, such as the history of the breed and breed standard, but lets face it any book on the breed MUST contain those topics. But in some of my other Ridgeback books they seem to either cover a lot of info that is geared towards dogs in general or they tended to cover a lot of information on show dogs throughout the world. But in this book I found the topics to be more unique to our breed & very informative and entertaining. The author goes into details of her own experiences with some of the topics, like sighting examples of her dogs' sense of humor, how they have amused themselves when left alone, how she has trained her dogs for obedience competition etc. etc. AND that is just in the third chapter of the book! The endless pictures she includes in her book are beautiful as well. I just loved this book!

5 comments about Training Your Pet Ferret.

  1. I loved this training guide! I loved the tips, handling instructions, and reward hints the author wrote about! This is a must have for every ferret owner!

  2. My ferrets are either too smart or too stupid to be trained. The pictures were cute, but I couldn't find anything in it that I didn't already know from Ferrets for Dummies or Modern Ferret magazine. I read it once and gave it to the local humane society's library.

  3. This isn't the best book out there for ferret information, but it does have some interesting tidbits in it and a bunch of cute pictures. I haven't been able to successfully use many of the methods talked about in the book with my ferrets, but it's possible they work for someone else. Every ferret is different! I give it four stars because some of the information is good, and the pictures are adorable. For the price, I can't complain. :)

  4. Do authors needing to start every thought with inane questions make you giggle more than thorazine? Do you have have commercial grade insulin handy for inoculations after every annacdote {which is on par with Elvis sightings?). Then this book is for you.
    Having raised seven and now that my girlfriend has added eight and nine ferrets I feel I a qualified to comment on the usefulness of this book - nil. We added this book to qualify for free shipping while ordering Ferrets for Dummies - a much better buy. {loads of valuable info}
Read Ferrets for Dummies and if you have a bird line the bird cage with with Ms. Somerville's exercise in ferret dreaming.

  5. Training Your Pet Ferret is the only book I have read that really does go in depth about how to train your ferret. It is filled with useful tips and advice on how to raise a better pet. Each page in the book has information that you can use. I have used many of the tips in this book and they all have seemed to work out perfectly for me. I am very satisifed with this book. As it says in the authors note, this is not a general care guide. This is a training guide. The only thing that I thought was bad about this book is the ferret pictures. The ferrets pictured in this book always look sad and unhappy. That is the only drawback, other than that, this is a perfect book for a new ferret owner or a ferret owner that has owned ferrets for many years.

2 comments about My Hamster and Me (For the Love of Animals Series).

  1. This book is fantastic for reviewing hamster care!! The book is entertaining because it has games, activites, and toy checklists icluded in the book for the owner to check off. There are also many adorable pictures hamsters. I have been taking care of hamsters for seven years now, and this book is still helpful. It's great for kids and adults, and hamster experts too!

  2. This is a nice book for the child hamster owner, perhaps for reading even before the pet is purchased. It does not contain all the details that a hamster owner might need, but it covers basic behavior and how to treat the pet. Cute photos, too!

4 comments about Physical Therapy and Massage for the Horse.

  1. I was disappointed with this book because it is too acedemic. It covers a lot of theory but is not very practical with only a few diagrams. While a professional massage or physical therapist would enjoy reading it, a horse owner wanting easy to read instructions with diagrams, would be disappointed. I would borrow it from a library, but it is not worth buying.

  2. This book is extremely detailed in anatomy. Although I like it, it's a little more detailed and technical than I had in mind for massage and stretching. It's almost like a mini text book. I found it a little on the heavy side for reading. I think this book is only for the most serious of students. It is chock full of technical descriptions, diagrams and some good black and white photos. I found myself skipping around trying to find something I might want to try on my horse but this book really isn't good for that. It really is more of a manual for the student of equine massage and physical therapy.

  3. Technical jargon galore in the first few chapters but after that the rest is easier for us non-vets to understand.

  4. This book on equine massage therapy was very clear and easy to understand. It pinpointed specific places to do specific exercises, and gave clear pictures of the anatomy you were dealing with. How to do the exercises, and how to improve your work with the horse in general, was very well explained, and made sense for someone who is not an expert.
