5 comments about Horse Owner's Veterinary Handbook (Howell Reference Books).

  1. This book holds loads of information. It is a very good item for the horse owner to keep handy.

  2. While the authors obviously know their stuff, I found it hard to read given the excessive and slightly archaic verbage; I would've preferred something much more consise, perhaps in a "bullet" fashion, rather than a tome.

  3. No book is a subsitute for a licensed veterinarian. Now having said that...

I've had this book for years and wouldn't be without it. It got me through my first foaling and also caring for that foal (including vaccinations). While I've not read this book front to back, the signs & symptoms section in the front is invaluable. The chapters are easy to read, yet they are informative and allow you to ask intelligent questions of your veterinarian when it becomes necessary for them to be there.

My mother recently bought her first horse and this book was the first thing I told her to go get.

  4. This is a well-organized, easy to undertand book for all horse owners. When I saw the size, I was daunted, but have found it to be helpful in understanding and tending to health issues with our horses. This should be on every horse owners bookshelf!

  5. This book is a good reference book if you own a horse(s). It is easy to read and covers a wide variety of condition and diseases.

5 comments about EVERY RESCUED DOG HAS A TALE: Stories from the Dog Rescue Railroad.

  1. This is a beautifully written book that will certainly touch your heart! It did mine! The pictures are truly heartwarming as well! This is a must read for dog lovers everywhere! Debbie has a heart of gold, and I am so proud to call her a friend!
    Well worth every penny!

  2. This book is fantanstic. Everybody needs to be educated about the plight of dogs that are abused and neglected. These stories will touch your heart !

  3. Anohter great read ... highly recommended for kids. Tells of the actions being taken by such dedicated animals lovers to getdogs/cats/etc. into their forever loving homes that they all deserve. Great read for kids!

  4. I entered another world when I read Deborah Eades heart warming book.
I had no idea that so many dogs were not wanted. I didn't realize how much dogs were suffering because of cruelty and neglect.

And I didn't know that there are networks of dog lovers across the country who save and transport dogs to a new lives where they will be loved and cared for.

With words and pictures, I was transported into the personal experiences of this dog loving author -- and her family -- on the Dog Rescue "Railroad." The dogs breeds vary,as do the personal stories of their rescue. What is constant is the loving satisfaction that Deborah Eades shares with all readers in her touching, heart warming book.

  5. I tell everyone I can to read this book. Yes, it will make you laugh, cry and inspire you all at the same time. For those of us that grow weary of the suffering "man's best friend" endures, this book is a reminder how little effort it can take and the huge sacrifices many are willing to make on behalf of these wonderful, deserving creatures.

5 comments about There is Eternal Life for Animals.

  1. I have known for years that my pets would go to heaven when they died. This is the first book I've ever read on the subject that had so many scriptures to back it up. For anyone who has lost a wonderful companion pet, I recommend this sensitive and compassionate book as a source of knowledge and comfort to help you through the grieving process.

  2. This book verified my belief that animals DO go to Heaven. You can't dispute what the Bible says. It's the word of GOD!!

  3. Expand your horizons and be blessed, don't wait until you loose an animal friend before reading this MUST HAVE book. The Good News is really Good News after all.

  4. If you need some comfort from your loss and reassurance...Then this is the book for you. Please see the related companion books also. Our family recently lost a pet and this book has been a comfort and help for us.

The author lays out in plain english and easy to understand stories and terms, what happens to pets, just like people, when they pass away.

Using a combination of quotes from scripture, coupled with near death experiences & descriptions, she logically paints a very vivid picture of what happens to our friends when we lose them. Stories from both sources blend well and compliment each other to provide a good description of what awaits our pets.

Contrary to worst case scenarios, their souls actually are fine and waiting to meet us when we pass away.

This book and companion books will offer you comfort and relief, but regardless of your decision to get them, if you are suffering from the loss of your friend, then God Bless you and provide you with comfort.

  5. I enjoyed reading this; I only wish that I would have known about it around the time that I had to say goodbye to my beloved and favorite cat. This book gave me great comfort, new Spiritual insights and confirmed some of what I thought were "my ideas" that certain Scriptures actually meant. I also purchased the companion book, "Animal Prayer Guide." I Praise the Lord that I will be reunited with my beloved furkids when the Lord takes me home. If anybody has any doubts about the destiny of their dear pets' souls, this book is a "must read" and will surely put any and all of those doubts to rest.

5 comments about Whole Health for Happy Cats: A Guide to Keeping Your Cat Naturally Healthy, Happy, and Well-Fed (Quarry Book).

  1. Whole Health for Happy Cats has become my cat bible. It lives in the kitchen with my `human' recipe books. Like them, it's covered in...ahem... `stuff', as I refer to it so often, particularly with regard to making nutritionally-balanced, cat-appropriate food.

My three cats are benefiting greatly from the info on nutrition and gentle holistic means for treating illness and disease. I'm also benefiting by saving a fortune on vet visits and expensive drugs that often just treat the symptom, not the cause. I feel so much more empowered knowing that I can treat common ailments myself, using items readily available from most health food stores. The book also explains when I should go to the vet without delay. The book is thoroughly researched using the latest information available. For this reason, it's far more useful than older books on the subject.

Without this book, I wouldn't have the confidence to make my animals' food myself. This book has all the information I need to know that the food I'm giving them is not only enjoyable for them to eat, but is nutritionally balanced, based on the latest research in cat nutrition. Given the tragic pet food contamination that killed thousands of cats and dogs, I can sleep at night knowing that my guys won't be the victims of less-than-optimum quality control and cat-inappropriate `filler' ingredients that are in so many commercial pet foods.

I particularly love the `mix and match' table which shows you how to nutritionally balance various types of meat with the other things cats' need.

For those who don't want to make their cats' meals, the book includes details on what to look for in commercial cat food, and what to avoid.

The book covers a whole raft of issues including diet, first aid, treating minor ailments, behavioural issues, reducing stress during vet visits, cat-toxic plants, how to introduce cats to each other to minimise hissing, spitting and flying fur, solving toilet troubles and how to resolve conflict in multi-cat households. There's even a recipe for safe, cat-appropriate tooth paste to maintain good teeth and gum health (I'm psyching myself up to try that out) and a gentle tummy soother.

The book is very easy to read, with lots of gorgeous photos, side bars, graphs and tables and interesting facts and figures. An absolute winner. I've given copies of this book to others and it's also in my public library.

My cats are healthy, lean, purring machines and they have this book and the author's extensive knowledge to thank for that. Every purrson should have a copy.

  2. I first found the web-site and bought the book; first for myself and then many friends. It's so very wonderfully written. Nothing 'in your face' that you have to do certain things. So easy to read and the photos are great. I've recently had a problem with a couple kitties and with the help of Sandy's book, things are SO much better.... Please get it and read it....and get some for your friends....

  3. This book has become a most valuable resource in my house, I have learned so much about proper cat care from Sandy Arora and treasure this book very much. I keep it handy with my cookbooks in the kitchen even :) This book helped me learn to take better care of my cats, they have made the smooth transition to an all raw diet, supplemented by other natural methods of keeping. My copy was always out on loan that I finally got a second copy!

  4. To another pet parent looking for a balance between nutrition and ease of sticking to the routine, this provides guidance sometimes omitted if just dealing with a vet on an annual basis. Our Moxley's 11.5 years young and we almost lost him to urinary cystitis over six years ago. Luckily, his vet succesfully performed a perineal urethrostomy and he's been trouble free since. Although excessive ash in his food was allegedly to blame, it made me re-evaluate what he was eating. He also had slight allergies and some dry spots over his eyebrows which we were told were untreatable as they did not respond to prescription creams. Otherwise, he seemed healthy. Since then, he eats home made food, often raw, with fish capsules squished into the commercial food he gets as a treat. His fur is glorious, eyes clear, dry spots forgotten and he is focused on getting the most out of his life. (If you want to see the sheen of his fur, check out YouTube for Moxley cat spanking). We recommend this book as a great addition to a home library and to share with other (less enlightened) pet owners. When the horror of the pet food recalls happened, we felt safe and grieved for others' loss. No one should blindly trust "corporate strangers" in their pet's welfare. This book will help you take control of it with ease.

  5. A must for every cat owner concerned with proper nutrition and care, to ensure a long, healthy life for their feline family members.

5 comments about Grooming To Win, Spiral-Bound: How to Groom, Trim, Braid, and Prepare Your Horse for Show (Howell Equestrian Library).

  1. A great book that I often reccommend for anyone who asks a lot of questions about grooming, at shows or at home. I Love grooming my horses, and this book gives you many new ideas and 'tricks' to try to make your horse have good and healty coat. I doesn't matter what breed or disciplne you show, this book has it all. I show hunter-jumpers and eventing, but I also have two miniature horses that I show and this book helped me with all of them!

  2. This is one of those books you don't use every day, but when you're thoroughly confused or completely forgetting something it comes in handy. It has alot of great pictures and illustrations that make it great for kids as well as adults. I learned alot about alternative grooming methods that I had never even heard of before!

  3. Grooming to win is for any discipline, and any breed. I used it as a reference for getting back into the show ring. It's like having your own trainer with you all the time. I show Morgan and Quarterhorses and it covers everything from conditioning to getting those braids in right!
    DONT SHOW WITHOUT IT!

  4. This is one of the best books that I've found that explains grooming your horse step by step - not only for the show ring, but for everyday maintenance. Ms. Harris details breed protocols for the show ring (good news for the novice showman!). Did you know that it is considered bad form to braid the hunter on the left side of the neck, and vice versa for western pleasure horses? From achieving that showring bloom to step by step braiding guides, this book is a must for any competetive horseman's book collection!

  5. From body clipping to everyday grooming, Ms. Harris has provided an excellent reference for everyone from the first-time exhibitor to seasoned professionals. She covers nearly every riding discipline imaginable, going over grooming procedures for each in a thorough yet consice manner. Her explanations are easy to translate into technique and the book offers many illustrations. This book makes for excellent reading for the novice and a wonderful referrence for the more experienced horse groom.

5 comments about Paws & Effect: The Healing Power of Dogs.

  1. What a wonderful book! The writing is great, and it blends heart tugging stories about the love between owners and their dogs with interesting snippits from scientific studies. There are also entertaining stories about dogs and their connection with people throughout history.

Ever heard of St. Roch? Turns out he is the patron saint of dogs. He was starving to death when a dog began to bring him loaves of bread.

I expect everyone who reads the story of Toaster, the Mexican hairless who learned to warm and comfort a handicapped woman, will fall in love with him.

Really, unless you have a heart made of stone you will love this book.

  2. I savored every moment of this book. Sharon Sakson enthusiam for her subject comes trough and makes the pages fly. Parts of it almost read like a triller-- you can't wait to find out what happen next. She combines a ton of fascinating research with wonderful storie of incredible dogs. The book isn't exactly was I expetect-I thought it would be a bunch of stories about therapy dgs. but it is much more than that. It is engagingly written and the information is so interesting that it turns out to ba a book you can't put down.
She does a great job of making the scientific information interesting and useful. it is all so interesting and some time surprising, that I was never bored, even though I thought I knew plenty on this subject.
And if you like this book, you should really go back and read her first book, Paws & Reflect: A special Bond Between man and Dog. some of the stories are Hilarious.Ans so well-written

  3. I just recently completed this book and was positively amazed at its power. Once I picked it up, I found myself sneaking around so that I would be able to read it uninterrupted. The content blends little known information on dog history and lore with the most awesome stories. I indeed believe that to be able to draw the audience into the words on the page is a gift and Ms. Sakson is certainly gifted. I laughed at some of the stories, smiled and of course, shed a tear at some of the other "tails" that were shared. When I reached the end of the book, I looked for more pages, but there were not any. I am always able to tell the best books whenI am left wanting more and I was looking!

  4. To be honest with you, I thought it would be much like the other books out there that talk about the wonderful ways that animals affect our lives; which is great. I thought I'd read a chapter last night, then maybe another tonight etc. Well, once I started to read it, I couldn't stop. It is a great book!! My one chapter tonight plan; well, I finally had to stop so I could get to bed or I wouldn't have gotten up for work this morning. I am about half way through the book already. It is a great book!!

  5. I got this book for Christmas. I didn't intend to read it right away, but once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. The stories were some of the most well-written stories I've ever encountered, and I read a lot. It turned out to be full of things I never knew; I never knew there is a patron saint of dogs. I never knew the Aztecs believed in the healing power of dogs and raised their own breed. I had heard vague stories about dogs detecting cancer, but this book laid it out and explained the whole thing. Turns out that even though scientists like their airplanes swept by bomb-sniffing dogs, they won't believe those same dogs can tell doctors which sample contains bladder cancer or lung cancer. So doctors like the ones at the Pine Street Clinic don't get funding for their projects, which could save all of our lives!
My family gave me this book because they know my favorite writer is Temple Grandin. She recommends this book. I could see why. It is clearly written, as her books are, and every story is backed up with scientific evidence. Reading about how devoted these dogs are to their owners, how concerned they were every day about telling the owner if they were going to have a seizure or if they detected cancer or even just comforting the owner with their presence almost made me cry. Why do dogs do that? We are not always that nice to them.
If you like dogs, you'll like this book.

5 comments about Scaredy Dog! Understanding and Rehabilitating Your Reactive Dog.

  1. I bought the book to help me understand a dog I had adopted who had severe issues. I was on the verge of seperating her from the rest of the family before I read this book. Now with a better understanding of why she has these behavior issues and how best to deal with them, owner and dog along with the other dogs in the home all live happily together. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has a dog with behavior issues and truly a desire to work through them. I gave it four stars only because it did not address every problem my dog had.

  2. So many of us adopt a dog and then find out that he/she is aggressive toward other dogs while out walking. I appreciated learning the word "reactive" because it was so apt. This book should be in the hands of everyone who adopts a dog, particularly an adult dog from a shelter. I figured out how to manage without the book but loved reading Brown's book as a check on how well I handled my dog's spontaneous eruptions whenever he spotted another canine anywhere near. I wish I had read this book at the time I most needed it. My 50 pound ruffian still erupts when another dog gets in his face, but now I know what to do. This is a slim easy-to-read manual that gets right to the heart of the problem, explains it, and tells you what to do. And it works.

  3. I read this book right before meeting with a client with a reactive dog and the little bit I learned was critical.

  4. Very good information in dealing with the difficult reactive dog. Not a textbook, but an easily read paperback.

  5. I read "Scaredy Dog" feeling overwhelmed with my newly adopted reactive dog. The book clearly explained what was going on with my dog, and the step-by-step way I needed to work with her to overcome her reactive behavior. I was very pleased with the common-sense approach and would recommend this book to anyone struggling with a reactive or aggressive dog. I would also recommend "On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas. It helped to explain what kind of signals I was sending my dog when she reacted to other dogs, and how to send the correct signals to calm down the situation.

2 comments about Canine Massage: A Complete Reference Manual.

  1. I found Canine Massage: A Complete Reference Manual to be a valuable reference tool for dog massage. Together, I purchased Canine Massage: Complete Reference Manual and Canine Massage DVD (Integrated Touch Therapy). Having the ability to reference and read what is described on the DVD has enabled me to put together a great massage therapy program for my canine clients.

  2. Now in an updated second edition, Canine Massage: A Complete Reference Manual is for dog trainers, breeders, handlers, and ordinary pet owners alike. Author and licensed massage therapist Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt, who treated athletes and world dignitaries before he applied his animal empathy talents toward canine massage, offers clear information illustrated with practical black-and-white "how-to" diagrams. Chapters cover dog kinesiology, principles and concepts of massage, common stress areas, stretching, hydrotherapy, common problems such as inflammation and scar tissue, and much more. Canine Massage is a serious, in-depth guide written by an expert, for professionals, although it is comprehensible to lay people. A "must-have" for anyone charged with holistic therapeutic treatment of a stressed or sick dog.

3 comments about Natural Horsemanship Explained: From Heart to Hands.

  1. I'm a recent horse owner, and I want to relate to and bond with my horse - because I believe that such bonding will improve our relationship. I was looking for specific techniques..for example, what specifically could I do to help my horse with three known problems - shying at running water - even if you reach into a trough and splash it, he shies. Also, panicking when tied, and panicking when taken to a rodeo area. Generally the horse, over 20 and a bit swaybacked, is not going to be ridden much, and he has scars from an ill fitting saddle. I'm mostly worried about ground handling.

Based on the title of this book, I was hoping that it would explain some techniques. It actually explains more techniques of so-called traditional horsemanship - as a negative exposition.

The book was well written in a conversational style. I'm actually convinced of the utility of natural horsemanship. After reading this book, were I in the horse business, I'd seriously want to reevaluate my methods to add more (or switch to) natural horsemanship, as I would believe that Natural horsemanship would create horses that would be easier to handle and would sell for more money or rent for more money or would be more likely to win me a ribbon...the point is that the book advocates for natural horsemanship both sensibly and effectively. My tendency, even before reading this book, was to handle my horse calmly, and with easy quiet methods, but this book laid out why clearly - and told me that I need to do even more things calmly.

What it did not explain was how. I still want to know how to do those things. I've had dog training books before, and they told me, "Hold your hands this way, correct the dog this way, offer praise when you see this cue, withhold praise when you see this cue." Sometimes you want more why from a book like that. This book was all why and no "how".

Maybe that is just not available - I have not found the book that does that for me yet. Maybe I did not recognize it. I still count this as a good book, worth reading. But not the book I needed at this point in my horsemanship education.

I've been negative, but I've still rated the book 4 stars. Excellent, well written. The only issue I have with it is the word "Explained" in the title. If it had been "Natural Horsemanship: The whys explained, from heart to hands" I would have rated the book five stars, despite my needs.

  2. Dr. Miller's and Rick Lamb's book is absolutely precious. High editing quality, precise information and brief and clear historical review on horsemanship. The shift in paradigm in what refers to man-horse relation could not be better described. This "Revolution" is indispensable to all those who need/want to research about horsemanship.

  3. Dr. Miller has done it again with this book on the insight of why this training works. Excellent read.

5 comments about Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats.

  1. If you are looking for straight forward, sound information on providing a raw diet for your pet this is a fine resource. The section on nutrients is very good. In it you will learn what food sources provide what nutients and what parts of the bodys health they aide and supportThe 'shopping list' is also a nice spring board for the newbe. There is a ratio guide that addresses serving size to weight balance. The book includes a significant resource guide as well. If you are interested in providing a Raw, natural, BARF type diet for your pet this is the book I would recomend.

  2. This book saved my dogs' life. We struggled with a very serious allergy for years, one day I saw Kymythys' book and decided to go with the raw diet. My dogs' health turned the corner and he has never looked back. He will be 10 this year and I could not be more grateful.
I have read loads of other books on raw feeding but keep coming back to this one.

  3. This is a good starting point if you are considering a raw or barf diet for you pet ... it is written simply for everyone to understand and gives many helpful observations, answers, and suggestions for those interested in this type of dietary regimine for their dog.

  4. Very interesting and informative book. A must for anyone who cares what they put into their cats or dogs dishes. Details on raw feeding and cooking for animals. A terrific book for anyone who owns dogs or cats.

  5. I agree 100% with feeding dogs and cats all natural, whole food diets and am very open-minded, always looking to learn new things about how to feed my crew. My endless research and quest for knowledge led me to this book and, after reading it, left me shaking my head in disbelief, fearing for the safety of the dogs who will be fed this diet by well-intentioned guardians.

First of all, dogs are NOT wolves - they are distant decendents thereof, and there's a big difference. You don't have to look far at all to find many tragic, heart-wrenching incidences of dogs dying after eating raw bones or getting sick from raw meat. The idea that dogs can not get sick from bacteria is ridiculous, and the assertion that food loses its nutritional value when cooked is false. Foods do not have to be raw to be nutritious!

My husband and I rescue dogs, and thereby have the opportunity to experience the joys and trials of helping sick, abused and elderly dogs heal on a regular basis. We currently care for a beagle/rottweiler mix with terrible allergy issues, and after much research and trial, we found that when he is fed an all natural diet of meat, fish, veggies, essential oils, the necessary nutritional supplements, Prozyme, a little fruit and a little plain nonfat yogurt, he is at his optimum condition. In fact, all of our dogs eat this diet in rotation with Wellness and Innova and are all gleaming, energetic pictures of magnificent health who never get fleas (and get no chemical flea treatments) - even our oldest seniors and sickest abuse survivors. No dangerous, questionable bones or raw meat required.

Every dog is different and has different needs, just as people do, so no food plan will ever be the one-size-fits-all 'right' way to do things, and anyone who says it is is full of themselves. Variety is the key to getting all the nutrients needed, just as it is for us. If dogs can enjoy optimum health without the use of risky items such as bones and uncooked meat, why use them? This book offers very little information and absolutely no evidence that the benefit of this diet is worth the potentially devastating risks.
