2 comments about Silky Terrier: A Comprehensive Guide to Owning and Caring for Your Dog (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).

  1. WOW! This book is great! Lots of great information on the Silky Breed. We breed our Silky Terrier once a year and This is one of the two Silky Terrier Books that we give to all our New silky Terrier Families.
These dogs are wonderful dogs, not yappy and they have a soft silky coat of HAIR, not fur. If you have alergies this is a great breed of dog. Wife has alergies and we got 3!! Some of our friends have yorkies and after we got our silkies they wished they had found the silky breed first.
I like to call them "A Mans Yorkie"! They are twice the size of a yorkshire terrier, they don't have wirey hair, they are stronger which makes them less suseptible to the medical problems yorkies have. A Silky is an Austrailian Terrier and a Yorkshire Terrier Mix. The breed name came from the LONG, Silky Soft hair the breed has.
Beautiful, wonderful, loving, devoted, loyal, great watch dogs, not yappy!
If you are looking for a toy breed, I think everyone should at least check out this breed before you buy a puppy.

  2. Good book talking about facts, personalties, health issues, discipline, etc of the Silky Terrier. Also contains many pictures.
Advice: good to have before you get your Silky !

2 comments about Aquarium Care of Fancy Guppies (Animal Planet Pet Care Library).

  1. This is a great book to learn about guppies and has great pics, i do think this book is more for breeders then for beginners, as for just a basic home tank i found myself still asking some questions, but still has a lot of good info.

  2. This book was purchased for my 12 year old daughter who has 2 aquariums in her room. One large tank is full of guppies happily breeding. This book has lots of useful information which my daughter refers to often. The book is easy to follow and many lovely photos.

    Thanks.

5 comments about 50 Ways to Train Your Cat.

  1. this book was very informative. My cats were receptive to the training

  2. Caution: One trick in this book is physically dangerous to your cat. Our vet said it is dangerous for a cat to stand-up on their back legs. Their hind legs can not support this activity. You will injure your cat. Please stop this trick. There are many, many other tricks cats can learn & not hurt themselves over time. PS Dog's hind legs can support standing-up - just not cats legs.

  3. This book relies heavily on squirting cats with water, which is not a positive reinforcement. Also, the steps do not address problem cats that don't want to cooperate. For instance, the section on nail-clipping tells you how to clip a cat's nails, but does not address how to get a cat to accept nail clipping without fussing.

  4. I found it lacking in detail, basically describing one way (positive reinforcement) used in 50 different applications. Much of the advice simply isn't practical.

  5. This book seemed like most Computer books I read. Define the problem and then a procedural step by step list of how to "solve" the problem. It just seems cold, calulating and impersonal. This may work with computers, but not with something living. The book just lists the steps, and if your cat doesn't follow the steps listed, oh well.

The author also seems to be streaching to reach the 50 training tips mentioned in the title as most seemed to come natural to my cats or were common sense to me.

5 comments about International Encyclopedia of Horse Breeds.

  1. Being the author of this book I am naturally biased toward it. What I can say is that I contacted the best authorities in the world for information and pictures and did not borrow from any other book.

One thing I would like to say about the reviews on this book. The book is exactly as described by Amazon and the University of Oklahoma Press and I want to debunk the few odd reviews stating that this book consists of ten yellowed pages. I have no idea why anyone would state such a thing but can assure you that it is untrue and completely ridiculous.

    Thanks,
    Bonnie Hendricks

  2. This book is wonderful. Lots of information, but a little pricy. Overall, it's a good deal for you if you love horses like me. One problem I had was I didn't know how many pages were in the book. All I know is it has more than 17 pages because there are 17 sample pages. I enjoyed looking at the sample pages. Thank you.

  3. This book is truly a complete guide to horse breeds. Unfortunately the quality of the book material was a disappointment. It was filled with photos; but only a few were color photos. The pages were not much better than the quality of a comic book, thin and yellow. I expected much more for the price. 4 stars solely on the detail and depth of it's information.

  4. Bonnie Hendricks has gone far beyond what any other horse breed researcher has done...she has contacted every breed association she possibly could. She has written with far more detail, greater accuracy, and on many more breeds than any other horse book I have seen. Her intelligent ideas inserted into some breed descriptions are well worth noting. This is a MUST-HAVE for the serious equine enthusiast! It has definitely spoiled my appetite for any other horse book that attempts to describe the breeds. Thanks Bonnie, we needed this book!

  5. Intresting and somewhat overwhelming a great insite into the world of horses.

1 comments about Cattery Design.

  1. When I heard that Our Cats book department was going to be stocking this fabulous new book, I begged Our Cats MD, Vince Hogan, to let me review it!

What a superb tome David Key has produced. It is simply bursting with over 400 photographs and it contains a wealth of realistic and valuable information.

Whether you want to redesign or update your existing cattery, start from scratch or you are simply looking for inspiration as to how to enrich the lives of your indoor cats, then this book is for you!

There are 17 chapters to keep you glued to the pages. These range from `Cattery Raison d'etre' - the reasons why cat housing is wanted to `Project Management' - looking at planning, development and costs.

What I particularly like are the Case Studies. These feature real and existing establishments, alongside wonderful photographs.

The book contains a Foreword by Helen Ralston, Chief Executive of Cats Protection. Helen says she is "delighted to introduce a book which has, at its heart, the welfare of cats."

The photographs of many of the catteries featured are accompanied by actual plans, so the reader can decide what will work best for their needs. This is then supported by a template for a Project Development Cost sheet - no surprises in store if you follow the breakdown of everything you will need to consider when working out a budget for a project.

The indoor cats are not overlooked in this comprehensive manual, there are great suggestions for indoor furniture and ideas for environmental stimulation via ramps, ledges, play stations etc.

Cat behaviour is related to practical solutions for keeping cats happy, entertained and stimulated by using the correct equipment to ensure they are not bored during their confinement.

Put this book on your "Wish List" now or decide to treat yourself to a fascinating and useful book to treasure forever! The photos alone make this a beautiful book and the text will fill you with inspiration.

2 comments about Guide to Owning a Himalayan Cat: Feeding, Grooming Exhibition, Temperament, Health (Guide to Owning).

  1. everything you need to know is here.
a lot of love for your cats, and this book, and you're all set.

  2. Though this book proved to be helpful when we first bought our new crean point, what struck me is that it doesn't discuss most of the details of cat owning nor does it really give detailed descriptions of illness. We had never had a cat before. How would we know if the darned thing is sick when we bring it home? This book was supposed to help with that, but it only skims illnesses in kittens and cats and spends most of the time discussing showing your new Himalayan. Anyone reading this would be reading it for help on training, diet suggestions and just basic "Cats for Dummies" sort of stuff. While it does offer excellent photos of rare cats and features extra glossy pages making it fun to flip through, it needs more of a point. So Himalayans throw up when they eat grass, any cat will. tell me something I wouldn't know that is unique to long haired or Himalayan cats and kittens, like the watery eyes and constant infections. How to deal with fleas and ticks and how to tell worms would have been nice if they were just doing a a generalized book, but in most aspects you know nothing more on completing this than you did before. It will probably confuse you and make you wonder "Why did they even bother?"

3 comments about The Last Panda.

  1. It's now known -- after a comprehensive Chinese-U.S. panda census carried out between 2001 and 2003/2004 -- that there are over 1,600 giant pandas left in the wild. The previous, oft-quoted estimate of "fewer than 1,000" was way too low. The benefit of hindsight on the part of a recent reader of this book, by naturalist George Schaller, makes this book less than believable. Schaller spends much time criticizing the Chinese government as well as Western governments for what he perceives to be ignorance and apathy toward the "plight" of the giant panda. But, one must ask, if he had indeed spent more time researching pandas instead of writing numerous books -- seriously, no matter how smart you are, the amount of waking hours, and working hours, you have are always limited, not to mention the amount of time one must expend in order to travel to the remote areas Schaller has -- Schaller should have known, or found out, that 1) there were more pandas out there in the wild, and 2) several Chinese research institutions, including Wolong Nature Reserve, had already made ground-breaking discoveries in captive breeding by the time this paranoid book was published.

Granted, Schaller seems to have felt a great deal for the giant panda. I don't doubt his sincerety. But by bluntly criticizing others -- and forgetting that conservation takes a lot of money, money to protect the animals, money to research into the animals, and money to help locals escape poverty without resorting to poaching and logging -- he trivializes the amount of effort needed to preserve the panda or any other endangered species. His blindness to what officials in China and in the West, including those at the WWF (where he now works), had already been doing is simply disheartening and misinforming.

  2. This book left me with a feeling one has after seeing a very moving film--sad, but reflective and motivated. I'll think about this book and any global conservation partnership differently now. The Last Panda gives equal time to the ecology and lives of wild pandas, but also to the difficulties of forging an international conservation project between Western and Eastern cultures, in this case the WWF and the Chinese government. Bureacratic apathy, even malfeasance, differing ideas of what constitutes "research" and even sad grasps at publicity using pandas as pawns disrupt and ultimately damage the precious few pandas in the study. Schaller's droll voice lends a small bit of humor to what must have been an extreme challenge in self-control when dealing with the friction between involved parties. This is not an uplifting success story, but almost rather a story of candid warning of the realities of forging global partnerships in any realm. Ultimately, concerned citizens, researchers, NGOs and governments have to remember why we're all involved: not for personal glory or public relations, but to save the endangered animal.

  3. In this book, George Schaller depicts the giant panda of China not only as a "cute" and lovable creature, but that it is also in a struggle to overcome extinction. I enjoyed reading this book because George Schaller writes down his most inner thoughts and feelings regarding the panda project in China. He does not hold anything back from the reader. From reading this book, I learned about the plight of the panda that other books have failed to mention.
