5 comments about Shelter Dogs.
- I bought this book because I read all the wonderful reviews and frankly I was extremely disappointed. I am a real dog lover and melt at the sight of any dog but these photos lack life. They look like mannequins and very few of them show the wonderful expressions we so often see in dogs and which make dogs so utterly lovable. For a book that is trying to tug at your heart on the subject of shelter dogs, it has failed spectacularly.
Give this book a miss.
- This book gives us details on shelter dogs, who the author Traer Scott, has met in her travels. So touching, uplifting and heartbreaking, especially when we learn so much about them and are told at the end which dogs lived and were adopted...and which ones were not (sniffle)...If this book doesn't convince you to adopt from an animal shelter, then I don't know what will! A portion of the proceeds from this book and Scott's other book, Street Dogs, are donated to animal charities. Worth it to buy both! Thanks for this great, insightful look at America's animal shelters.
- This was a very good book. The descriptions were great. The pictures were beautiful. I really enjoyed reading it. There was alot of information. Shelter Dogs
- I'm an aspiring photographer/shelter owner...and this book just confirmed why I want to do each of those things. I cried when I read some of the stories in the back, and each picture was so darn cute. I love this book, and (when I get one) will sit on my coffee table for all my guests to look at!
- ..of finding the soul of her subjects, and showing us all what loving, intelligent, sensitive creatures these abandoned companions truly are!
As the proud "parent" of five rescued canines (and three rescued felines), I can only express my regret that our "forever home" cannot accommodate more: I'd take in each and every one of these lost souls that she captures so hauntingly.
Complaint has been lodged that Ms. Scott erred by not including each animal's bio with their photograph, but I take exception to that: The impact is magnified, when the photograph alone is displayed.
My only dissatisfaction might be that the book is too short, and I can only implore the author to continue her exceptional work with additional issues: If only more people could truly see these loving creatures through the "eye" of her camera, perhaps our shelters would not be so full, and "euthanization" could become anachronistic...

5 comments about Poodle Clipping and Grooming: The International Reference (Howell Reference Books).
- I needed a book as I am new to grooming a poodle for show. This book has been great when I need advice from bathing to brushing to products to scissoring and clipping. A must have book for those that want to groom their own poodle. I highly recommend this book.
- The photos, text & descriptions are detailed. It really got my creative juices flowing. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to groom their poodle either as a pet or for show.

5 comments about Dog Training For Dummies (For Dummies (Pets)).
- Have owned dogs for many years but this book
is by far the best book I have read on dog training.
Would recommend to anyone.
- I was searching for a resource written in "plain English" that would help me understand my dog from the inside out.
Dog Training for Dummies has given me some keen insight into my pet's psychology. I absolutely love the concept of "postive training" as this method will undoubtly ensure a positive bonding experience with my dog.
Jack and Wendy Volhard have written a training manual that should be given to each new puppy owner. This resource has de-mystified the concept of dog training for me and has encouraged me to challenge my dog to be the best canine citizen he can be. This is, of course, for his good and well being as well as for ours.
- Insofar as children are the usual family member wanting an animal, this book makes them part of the whole training aspect, whih I feel is as necessary as their doing chores. (ie: feeding, bathing, walking dog)
- I can't believe all the info in this book! It covers dog training and even nutrition. Worth every penny of the purchase price. Made me feel confident in my training techniques. I taught both of my dogs the "down" command in a week.
- I have had dogs my whole life, but when I got my new puppy, I decided to read this book. I think its FANTASTIC. It taught me A LOT... I found new ways to train my dog that I had never thought of. I think anyone that owns a dog should get this book. Its great.

5 comments about Puppy Training for Kids.
- As preparation for a puppy for our 10-year-old son, we had him commit to reading this book first. Each night he read alone, and then we read together. It was not only informative, easy to read and follow, but a great shared time as well! It was the perfect "first" book to introduce our son into the upcoming responsibilities of having a dog. I also realized how neglectful I was in raising our now adult Labrador, and how much I want to re-train her with our son's puppy, too!
- If you have a puppy or young dog, this book is great for your kids who want to help train it. It has great pictures and some neat tricks for the dog to learn.
- The illustrations in this book are beautiful and easy to understand. Children can follow and understand how to care for and train their new puppy. This is not a book for people who are looking to learn about dog behavior the history of a dog. You will need to find a more informative book like; Good Owners, Great Dogs by Brian Kilcommons for that kind of information. But for older children who want to learn to care for their dog this is a good book for them.
JoAnn Dahan author of Kids Training Puppies in 5 Minutes and TV Show Host of Kids Training Puppies.
- This is an excellent book for your children if you plan to make puppy a new member of your family. It guides the children through the various stages of training a puppy, has good photographs supporting the text and highlights certain important phrases. Whislt it, of course, does not cover all aspects of dog traing, it does not need to do that: the training will be the adults responsibility, and not the child's. The child however can and should support those efforts and by reading this book can add to the training and hence become a responsible dog owner her/ himself.
- Pretty good. Easy to understand unlike a lot of other dog books. I think it's just a little lacking in information, but it's a great book to start with, above average.

5 comments about The Dogs in My Life, Vol. 1.
- this book is relaxing, dogs inside are beautiful and cute and it makes me smile. i would recommend it to everyone.
- I love dogs, and have several rescues. I wanted to love this book, but just couldn't. It bored me to tears and failed to resonate with me.
- I enjoy reading this book again and again, and my children requested to have a copy that will stay at home since I also enjoy lending the book to my friends.
The first book of a two-volume series, it describes the stories and personalities of Supreme Master Ching Hai's first three dogs, Benny, Lucky and Happy. The dogs have had a lot of hardships before the Master adopted them and nursed them back to health and dignity. Thanks God, they now live in Heaven and live a life of unconditional love - the unconditional love they have for their human mother and the unconditional love the Master has for them.
This book is so inspiring that I want to love every single dog on the street.
Animal lovers of all horizons just love this book and its beautiful, lively, colourful pictures.
- The book of "The Dogs in My Life, Vol. 1" is one of the best book I have.
- IN THIS BOOK YOU CAN LEAREN HOW TO LOVE YOUR PETS, HOW TO LISTEN TO THEM AND HOW TO TALK WITH THEM.

5 comments about Choosing and Keeping Chickens.
- This book has really great information about the many different breeds of chicken and answers many questions, such as:
-Which breeds are gentle and docile/best for children?
-Which breeds are aggressive or avoid humans?
-Which are noisy or quiet?
-Best or poor layers?
-Difficult to breed?
-Have special husbandry requirements (fencing, footing, housing, etc.)?
This is a great book for those new to chickens or those considering a new breed. As we all know, "you can't judge a book by its cover"-- the same idea applies to chickens! This book can help families avoid choosing a breed for the wrong reasons (and thus avoid a negative experience with chickens). It also helps those new to chickens understand that not all breeds can live under the same conditions-- e.g. while some are happy in relative confinement, others will harm each other or be miserable when in close confinement and need to be allowed to range freely. Some chickens are cold-hardy while others are not suited to freezing winters. Etc. etc.!
This book can help families find what they are looking for (a friendly pet, a great layer, a hen that will be happy being confined, etc.) in an interesting and appropriate breed.
- Nice overview and great photography of the different chicken breeds. Has details on how chickens produce for eggs, meat of show.
- This is my second favorite chicken book. Great basic info. on setting up for chickens, keeping them, and, most importantly, on what breeds are best for your particular needs/desires. Nice photos, and good descriptions. Unfortunately, it is a British book, so it doesn't include a few American breeds I wanted to read about, but that's a pretty minor fault... All in all, a very concise, useful book.
- I love the book the photos are great and I found the information helpful. I would recommend this book the first time chicken owner or someone who has then for a while.
- This is a great book with lots of wonderful pictures. I read it after reading Living with Chickens. The 2 books together really gave me extensive information. This book is especially helpful to choose which type of chickens you'd like to have. It will give you a picture, a total description and personality of each breed so you can choose what is right for you. I now have a list of birds (chicks)I want and am waiting for them to come in from the feed store.

5 comments about Three Dog Bakery Cookbook: Over 50 Recipes for All-Natural Treats for Your Dog.
- Me and my wife bought this book for our two dogs. We enjoyed making several of the treats. Although, our pets don't know the difference between the treats we made vs. store bought treats, it doesn't matter. It's a fun activity for the family to enjoy either way -- if you have the time.
- I think a lot of the recipes in this book are great, as do my dogs. But there is one very important problem with this book. There are some ingredients that dogs should not ingest, and some of those are included in these recipes! Raisins being one of them. :(
- This book is good for personal use only. Many of the recipies I may not even use due to the extravagant work or ingredients. It's not a book to purchase if you are trying to start a bakery for pets, though.
- I have been concerned about commercial dog food for awhile and the last rash of poisonings caused me to take action.
Bought this book and I am cooking my way through it and my dog, Bailey, is one happy pup. This book along with other information about making your own healthy dog food has been the answer for me.
- I only use a couple of recipes out of this book, most of them are more complex than what I was looking for.

5 comments about Stretch Exercises for Your Horse: The Path to Perfect Suppleness.
- This book will be read over and over as a handy reference guide. The topic is interesting and goes to a lot of trouble to explain in simple english, what problems may occur.
- Very informative. I learned how to stretch the muscle so that the horse was more supple and less likely be to injury in competition and everyday use
- One of the greatest mistakes riders make is not preparing their horses to rider. They just jump on and go. They don't warm the horses up or stretch them after they have worked to keep muscles supple. Then they wonder why their horses become lame or injured. The stretches suggested in this book are a great way to treat your horse like the athlete he is.
- For whoever said there is nothing new in this book you must be a very proficient and contentiousness horse person. I found this book pack full of goodies. Perhaps there is nothing "new" for you, but for most horse owners it is a fantastic book.
It has clear illustrations of all the stretches and explanations about why you do them. I also find this a good book for taking out to the barn and working through with my horses.
They enjoy the change from being ridden and the exercises also make good warm up and cool downs. They are the basic exercises but you don't really need to learn 999 different exercises. Just do the ones in this book well.
- Learn your horse's anatomy and put your new knowledge to work as you train your horse and develop stretching routines.

5 comments about A Dog Year: Twelve Months, Four Dogs, and Me.
- How would you feel if you were perfectly happy with your two Labrador retrievers, and a new chaotic dog comes crashing into your ideal life? This is what happened to Jon Katz. He lives in England, and this book takes place in modern times.
Jon lives with his wife and his two dogs, Stanley and Julius. His standard of living revolved around taking care of his dogs, and doing what he loves: writing. He was more than happy with his way of living. When Deanne--a dog breeder--informs him of a two-year old border collie that needed help, Jon's love for dogs got the best of him and he introduced Devon to the family. Jon was struck by the difference in the breeds. Devon was hyper, had anxiety attacks, required three times the exercise that his two other dogs obtained, and didn't trust Jon at all. But this only motivated Jon more. He was determined to get Devon to trust him even if it drove him mad.
When Jon achieved his goal for Devon, Deanne called him and asked if he wanted a puppy. If he adopted Homer, the new puppy, that would be adopting 2 dogs in a period of 12 months. Was that too much for the dogs to handle? But the second his eyes saw the picture of the puppy, he couldn't pass the offer. He was concerned about how Stanley and Julius would accept another dog into their already shaken life, but he was more nervous about Devon. Would Devon be threatened by this new dog that endangered his position?
When Homer came, he was the exact opposite of Devon. He was cute, sweet, and had a charm on everyone--dogs and humans. Everyone but Devon. Devon took time to get used to the new life, but when Stanley and Julius passed because of old age, he had yet another adjustment to make. The rest of the biography shows how Devon and Homer form a new relationship without Stanley and Julius.
The pacing of this book was moderate. I think it was written in a Christian perspective, and the title explained how Jon had gone from two to four dogs in a year. The theme is about perseverance. Jon used Devon's bad actions as a stimulation to train him, and even when he was frustrated, he never gave up. He always had a good attitude considering his circumstances. Jon Katz's writing is very natural, and flows very easily. He has advanced vocabulary and interprets his dogs' feelings well considering that they couldn't talk to him. The mood changed from time to time. He was easily frustrated by the sacrifices of comfort he had to give up for his two new dogs. In time, though, he learned to love the new lifestyle. I thought parts of this book were funny with dog humor. I would recommend this book to people who have dogs, because they definitely would understand the humor and aggravation of having a dog more easily than those who don't.
- follow up to Bedlam Farms - never would have bought any of his books if had known what he would do to border collie in last book - a real jackass - hope no one buys anymore of his books - he might have to get a real job
- This is a wonderful book. It's hysterical at times and moving at times. This is the first Jon KAtz book I had the pleasure of reading and I have now read most of them. As the parent of a Border Collie let me tell you he hits the nail on the head. Mine are not as amusing, however they are just as smart. I would definitely recommend reading this book if you are thinking of getting a Border Collie for yourself, it may make yout think twice. They are wonderful dogs, but you should be aware of what you may be getting yourself into. Jon Katz has a writing style that will draw you in and you won't be able to put this book down or wait to go get your next one.
- A review from the author of Born Without a Tail:
This was an enjoyable read. I particularly liked Katz's characterizations of his labradors, Stanley and Julius. I'm not a big lab fan, but these two stole my heart. This book is a pretty accurate description of life in a multi-dog household. Katz recounts some very funny experiences with his dogs: one of my favorites was when he retrieved the blue ball from the storm drain.
- WHat a jerk this guy is. Please do not buy his books. He is the epitome of the stupid, narcississtic dog buyer whose actions fiill our shelters with "broken" or "not quite right for me" dogs.
I hope someday he gets "broken"and his wife thinks about putting him down. WHat a creep.

5 comments about Way of the Horse: Equine Archetypes for Self-Discovery - A Book of Exploration and 40 Cards.
- This is an excellent tool that I use in Psychotherapy. You do not have to enjoy horses to use the 40 beautifully illistrated cards and explore the short chapter associated with the card. I have used it in career counseling as well as groups for people with conflictual self and relationships. This book has also assisted me in discovering what"gifts" that I bring in my life as well as what "challenges" I may have within me. This book is in a nicely done case in order to keep everything together. It is highly recommended as a reference tool for self or others. I have had all my friends pick their cards and I copied the pages for them to refer back to. I have now purchased as many books as I can find from this author and I will continue to explore her scope of self discovery using the horse as our guide.
- These cards and the book make a great option for Tarot readers who want to branch out into different forms of reading for clients that are turned off by the old witchy reputation of the traditional tarot. The archetypes are well thought out. I have yet to master the different meanings and it will take study but I really welcome it. Many people are more open to horses than they are to other people!
- I ordered these cards because I was planning to buy a set for a friend who is a horse-lover. This is not a traditional tarot deck, but instead a deck defining different aspects of life and offering a unique lens for looking at these aspects. There isn't any skill involved in using these cards (just pick a card in the morning or lay out 3 if asking a particular question) but they seem to offer insights at first use. The first question I asked this deck involved a relationship and I pulled card 6, "Rivalry" which described two people in a partnership wanting to dominate when it could be a more cordial relationship. I was able to discuss this insight with my partner. This deck lends itself to meditation, and is definitely the kind of deck you can use for deeper insights about a situation. It is not the kind of deck for "yes or no" answers. Also, the explanatory chapters on each card goes for several pages so be prepared to sit and read a while when you pull your card, as there are no quick answers in this deck. The book makes interesting reading on its own. The cards are beautifully drawn and perfect for any horse lover. If you want a deck of "wisdom" cards to look at daily, these are very suitable. There is so much wisdom to be drawn from horses, and with evocative cards such as "Kairos," "Merlin's Spirit," "Keeper of the Mysteries," "Maste of Sadness," and others, these cards and book allow a deeper look at any issue you might be facing. These cards will not tell you what to do. They will give you a new view of your situation with alot of food for thought.
- I've been using tarot and other non-tarot card decks for over 20 years, both to answer burning questions and to learn more about myself. This deck, beautifully illustrated, succeeds marvelously at both! The only complaints that I might have about this product, are:
1) that the cards are a bit thin and I'm not sure how well they will hold up to being handled and shuffled over years-worth of use (one of my cards came a bit wrinkled straight out of the box), and
2) there could stand to be more card layouts in the book- this won't phase an experienced card reader like me, who can use layouts from other decks and systems, but might limit a beginner who is just starting to learn how to use cards for the first time (you can make up your own spreads by drawing a diagram in the shape that you want, assigning numbers to each space- usually the same order to lay them down and later read/interpret each card, and give each card position its own meaning).
All in all, I highly recommend this deck/book set for both experienced card users and beginners to this form of information seeking. The book is well-written and even has an index to help you find your way around. Another way the cards can be read is without the book and purely with your own intuition, seeing how each card makes you feel and trusting the first thing that comes to mind when focusing on the picture. Let the colors, images, artistic style, and symbolism speak to you and realize there is no right or wrong way to do a reading. Trust yourself, relax, focus on your intent or question, and then have fun! "Past, Present, Future" is a favorite spread of mine, and I'm sure you will, over time, become partial to your own. There is much to be learned from this deck, the accompanying book, and, of course, from horses themselves. Enjoy!
- As I expected the Way of the Horse was beautifully written, very insightful and full of wisdom of the most relevant and magical kind The illustrations by Kim McIlroy again are beautiful, inspired and comlemented the text as the masculine does the feminine I wuldhighly recommend it foranyone who wishes todelve deeply into their inner realms and rediscover a more soulful life Five stars Regards Robina
