  1. Great Book! Very informative. Goes into good detail of every aspect but not too detailed that you have a hard time understanding it. I have purchased a few books on the topic as I have experienced some unusual situations with my horse breeding program and found it to follow right along with my vets advice and information on many of them. For the money, this is by far the best book I have purchased yet on horse breeding.

  2. This is a pretty informative book, but I found that there is still some basic information that is not mentioned. For example my vet said a 3-week heat cycle for a mare's first March heat is not unusual. The book never mentions it. It also doesn't say anything about dealing with a virgin stallion. My vet had different advice than they did on washing the stallion. Since he maintains a stud, I trust his judgement. It is still informative however and we'll have to see how the foaling part goes. Just wish it had more information in certain areas. It would have saved me a $70. trip to the vet for something that is normal.

  3. This book will enlighten you too. It is great for the large or small facility. Have to read. A must!

5 comments about Every Living Thing.

  1. I have just finished this book after having read the other books in the series many years ago. The magic is still there. I would not ordinarily be attracted to a book of animal stories but the animals in Dr. Herriot's practice are a stage for something more. The author gives the reader a slice of life from a different time and a different place (Yorkshire). I was quickly enamored with the characters and the telling. This book is really about gentle spirits, kind humor, unpretentious people, dedicated lives. Reading it makes the heart glad.

  2. This is my fifth review of a James Herriot title, and if you've missed my first four reviews because you live in a cave, I presume you've heard of the TV series called All Creatures Great And Small. That was based on the first collection of wonderful tales from a Yorkshire veterinarian, or possibly the first few. More than a decade passed between this book and the one before it, and I believe this was his last original book. At first there is a dip in the quality we've come to expect, but once he gets back into his groove, it's every bit as entertaining as its predecessors, and I hated that it ended. It's well worth reading and I enjoyed it immensely.

  3. I read his books as a teen and loved them. Bought the whole set for my grandsons, [teens]. They laughed until they cried. [so did I].

  4. I read this book many years ago, I enjoy animal stories, I loved books by James Herriot, I read all of his books, the one perchased recently was a gift for my grandaughter who likes animal stories.

  5. As usual, I enjoyed the stories written by James Herriot; maybe not quite as much as previous books but it still made very enjoyable reading!

5 comments about Perro De Presa Canario: Special Rare-Breed Edition : A Comprehensive Owner's Guide (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).

  1. A must read an a book that should be added to one home's library for those researching a possible family dog companion and guardian and or Dog Fanicer of Working Dog Breeds . In addition, beautiful photos of various Presas. Its author Manuel Curto Gracia is a breeder an expert from the Canary Islands who has played a part in introducing the Presa to Dog Lovers throughout the world .

  2. This is the only book I have found on this breed of dog. Very informative.

  3. This was a solid book on the breed. It was factual and mostly specific to the presa canario, although there was a lot of boilerplate in the training and health sections. But it was a good introduction for anyone interested in the breed. The pictures were top-notch.

Although the training section was good, it is really just an introduction to the topics -- a novice should get a more in-depth book or professional advice.

  4. This easy to read book provides all the information you need about this rare breed. It's complete with photos, training tips, diagrams and fascinating as well as essential information.

  5. I purchased this book during the first week of owning my new presa puppy. Although I was somewhat familiar with the breed through internet research and message boards, it was good to have a hardcover book that covered the history of the breed as well as on that provided information to the presa owner on what to expect throughout the life of my pet. It gave excellent tips on how to deal with the behavior of a presa from the chewing and jumping my puppy does right on through to the aggression I hope I never experience with my dog. Thanks for the solid foundation. I wish there were more pictures on what the dogs look like each month from the time they are born until they are adults. All in all, I think it's a great book and I'm glad to have it as a reference.

5 comments about The Pleasures of Their Company: An Owner's Guide to Parrot Training.

  1. Everyone with a parrot really needs to know how to communicate and train their companion bird. It will benefit everyone concerned. This book is excellent and easy to follow. My amazon loves to put his rings on spindle, wave hello while saying hello on cue, puts quarters in piggy bank, high five, and more. I learned how to teach him these tricks through practicing the guidelines in this book.

  2. This book, the third by Bonnie Doane, is a must for the new parrot owner or for those who have had a parrot for many years. I found this book to be an excellent guide when I first got my new parrot. I made sure I researched every book I could when I first acquired my two-week old baby parrot, and this book was one of my favorites. I found it very helpful in the training & learning process of handling my parrot as it matured and got older. There are chapters on obedience skills and training techniques for adult parrots, as well as how to work with baby birds, speech training, and trick training. There are 12 chapters filled with helpful advice that you should definitely be aware of.

I highly recommend this book. You should check out her other two books, "My Parrot, My Friend" and "The Parrot in Health and Illness." These are excellent books for your bird-related library in my opinion.

  3. This is an excellent book on the behaviour and training not only of parrots, but also macaws, cockatoos, budgerigars and other members of the parrot family. I have a 3 year old Hyacynth Macaw called Gervaise who has benefited enormously from my purchase. He never ceases to amaze me with his intelligence and agility. He is building up an impressive vocabulary and can do tricks like ringing a bell and eating seeds from my bumcrack. The fun's not all Gervaise's - as the title suggests, their company really does provide the owner with a great deal of pleasure, and this book can really enhance that pleasure.

  4. This book is very well written and can easily be used as a reference guide as well. This book lacks only in one aspect (colour photos) of actual birds since I love to look at pictures almost as much as reading the information. I would recomend this book to anyone thinking of getting a bird or someone who already has one and is acting up a bit. I haven't adopted a bird as of yet but it's only days away. (I can't wait to get the Umbrella Cockatoo home). A really great site (except it is a little negative but very informative to future Parrot owners is http://members.citynet.net/skydiver/parrots/parrots.htm. Check it out . I looked online for two months to make sure that I was picking the right bird for our family and everything you need to know is right there or there's links to it.

5 comments about Bassett Hounds (Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).

  1. The book is very helpful in telling you WHY Bassets behave (oxymoronic phrase) the way they do. Not even this wonderful book can make them less stubborn, alas.

  2. Lots of valuable information in the manual that has helped me understand my Basset Hound. Worth having.

  3. This book was not at all what I expected! I thought it was written by a lover and owner of basset hounds?? It seems as if this guy thinks basset hounds are pains!!! Not to mention the type of dog he describes is nothing like my dog! My dog is very playfull, not calm or sluggish at all! He talks about Basset Hounds like they are the most fragile dogs in the world! This book was not as good as I thought it would be.

  4. This book is excellent for the first time Bassett owner. I found it helpful in raising my own Bassett Hounds and giving advice to friends and family that had decided to get a Bassett of their own. The only drawback is it could offer a little more detail that is specific to Bassett Hounds and not just dogs in general. All in all, it was very helpful in understanding some of the unique traits of Bassett Hounds.

  5. This was a very good book for me as I am looking for a basset hound puppy. It is very informative and to the point.

4 comments about Setup and Care of Freshwater Aquariums (Animal Planet Pet Care Library).

  1. 25 years ago I kept 12+ aquariums and thought I would buy a couple of books to get back in the swing of things. I bought this book thinking it was going to be refresher...man was I wrong. As soon as I saw the fake color of the fish on the cover I knew I was being hooked by a slick "Animal Planet Book"

This book poorly attempts to instruct the reader by explaining topics only half way. For the "Absolute Uniformed" this will seem like lots of good information, however the key points could be made much more simply and clearly in half the number of pages.

This book completely misses the opportunity to include "How To Pictures" and illustrations to support the text. A picture is worth a thousand words...but I guess that well known clique is missed by the "Animal Planet's" publication staff.

I would strongly recommend as an alternative "Setting Up a Tropical Aquarium Week by Week" by Stuart Thraves. This book has 10 times the information in twice the number of pages and has excellent illustrations to support the text. It is well organized so that it can be used as a reference because undoubtedly the average new enthusiast will need to read sections as issues arise.

  2. I bougth this book because I am planning to buy an aquarium and I don't have any idea abouth this subject. I really enjoyed reading this book because it is simple, and gave me a very good picture of the things that I need to do to set up an aquarium successfully. It gives a very good introduction if you are not familiar with aquariums. This book is a must if you are getting your first aquarium.

  3. This book gives a very comprehensive overview of all aspects one would want to explore when keeping a freshwater fish tank.

  4. If you're a first-time aquarium owner interested in the basics of setting up a freshwater aquarium, Freshwater Aquariums is the perfect starting point. Envision a simple, easily-followed book packing in colorful photos to illustrate fish care and set-up, tips on species selection and maintenance, and colorful charts and sidebars of fish information and you will realize what a useful, attractive and easy manual you have here.

3 comments about The Power of Positive Horse Training: Saying Yes to Your Horse (Howell Equestrian Library).

  1. This book gives good incite to the person who is trying to partner with their horse. Trying to find your way when everyone has an opinion is hard. This approach is a balanced approach, good for you and the horse.

  2. I did thoroughly enjoy this book. I have done and read a significant amount of natural training methods so some of the ground work stuff was fairly elementary and sometimes not as 'natural' as I would like - found it to be a little incongruent with the 'positive' and 'saying yes' part of the title.

None-the-less the under saddle training suggestions - especially teaching the half halt and circle work - were invaluable and made this book a worthwhile purchase. Like any book I its important to take away what is useful to you and not be too critical of the remainder which may work very well for others.

  3. What a great book! With so many books available on natural horsemanship, horse behavior and training it's easy to accummulate a whole equestrian library rather quickly. There are really only two books you can't go without though:
Gincy Bucklin's What Your Horse Wants You to Know and Sarah Blanchard's The Power of Positive Horse Training.
Not only are both books full of great suggestions but more importantly they help bridge the language barrier between horse and human. Wonderful books to own, easy and interesting to read and great reference tools and morale builders when you and your equine partner hit a road block.

5 comments about Rainbows and Bridges: An Animal Companion Memorial Kit.

  1. This is one of the few books that helped pull me through. Others were very religious or didn't reach the part that I needed to start healing. This book was compassionate and did everything I needed to start my healing process. It supports your grief and allows you to grieve and then helps you start your healing process. It's absolutely amazing. The journals, the memorial cards, and the book are all sensational.

  2. I recently lost my little dog, Toby, through an animal attack. I have been devastated. Toby was my heart. In the local bookstore I asked if she had anything on pet loss and she showed me this book. I read it through and found so much comfort. No where else had I come across such inspirational material with regards to our beloved animal friends. I wrote his name an the cards, and reread the book. The journal was enormously helpful and I wrote the things about him I didn't want to forget . From there I made a small scrap book, using the paragraphs I'd written in the journal.

I wouldn't find the need to do this with all my animal companions, but Toby was a special friend, and this kit helped me a great deal towards the beginnings of healing.

  3. Rainbows & Bridges is the first set to address the need for mourning the death of an animal in the family, offering the clergy member authors' insights on healing. It's more than a book - it's a kit of materials which walks adults, kids and even other household pets through the grieving process, identifying 'rainbows' and 'bridges' which allow the user to move from grieving to recovery. From what things should never be said to someone whose pet has died to how to support a person suffering from pet loss and how kids and adults adjust, Rainbows & Bridges covers the entire process from initial loss to phrases of grieving and considering a new pet.

  4. The kit is wonderful and I know it will help a lot of people through the grief that comes from losing a beloved pet. Just knowing they are not alone in that grief will be healing. Hearing the stories of other people who have experienced what they are experiencing will give them the courage to go on.

  5. I am thrilled to have this beautifully presented resource in my home office now. For decades I've been working with people and their pets as a minister, teacher, healing arts practitioner and writer, and I have never seen anything like this loving work. Allen and Linda Anderson have compiled an exquisite collection, a warm and graceful toolbox that's destined to become a classic for helping us honor our animal kin. An invaluable treasure map at your fingertips! Rainbows And Bridges An Animal Companion Memorial Kit has jumped to the top of my holiday shopping list for gifting family, friends, neighbors, students, clients and congregants. Thanks Angel Animals Network!
