5 comments about The Feline Mystique: On the Mysterious Connection Between Women and Cats.

  1. I wanted to read this book to further explore the question posed by the title and thought there would be some answers. If you have never read any books about cats and their history before, then there is much scholarship and lovingly done research in this book and that does make it worthwhile. She is obviously well-meaning, sincere and loves cats. However, the book doesn't really explore the "mysterious connection" in any interesting or conclusive fashion. Sadly, too, her writing is a bit clunky, repetitive and formulaic, especially in her various interviews. It felt like a research paper that someone suggested could be made "more interesting" with interviews with female cat owners. I just thought it would be a better book. The book on this subject has yet to be written.

  2. Not a particularly entertaining read. It reads like a thesis paper, scholarly and ponderous. Felt like I was doing homework.

  3. This is a great book, especially for those that would like to know WHY so many wonmen are adopted by cats! We never really own a cat, nor should we and I think women understand this, as explained in the book. Cats are part of the family and because of that, the bond it strong. This book helped me to understand why.

  4. This book has been very insightful for me and some of my friends (this was a great gift item!). What I found most intriguing was the reconstruction of the make-up of "The Old Cat Lady" myth. It makes sense that it was built out of confusion, disdain, and the urge to make women feel repressed.

The stories presented here are very enjoyable, and I found myself retelling them to several friends. It's nice to realize a bit of a community here.

I thought this book was going to be totally unrelated to most of the other books I've been reading lately that are about Wicca. I was pleasantly surprised to find a little blurb about Wicca in chapter 3. I am definitely glad for the positive coverage, the more informed people are about various ways of life, the less bigoted the world will be.

  5. A great book for any women who loves cats. It tells about the very apprent female and feline love affair that's gone on for thousounds of years. It's really informative and interesting. It will make you feel closer to the special feline in your life. Remarkable book.

5 comments about The Golden Retriever Handbook.

  1. My husband and I are planning on getting our first dog (together) and it will definitely be a Golden Retriever. I grew up with these dogs and I'm a veterinary technician, so I'm pretty familiar with the breed and all the potential health problems. Since this is my first dog, on my own, I wanted to make sure I do things right and not overlook anything.
This book is an excellent reference for the first time owner or even a seasoned one.
There's detailed information on the history of the breed, descriptions and illustrations of American and British standards, what to look for when chosing a puppy or dog, how to feed & proper nutrition, proper grooming, diseases and conditions that are common for dogs in general to ones more specific to Goldens. This book even tells you how to perform a quick physical on your dog so that you can learn what's normal and what's not, enabling you to identify potential problems as soon as they arise.
One thing that surprised me was a section on blood tests and an explanation of some of the more common tests done on dogs. There's also a section on first aid, artificial respiration, and CPR. Another valuable section, is one on training. It goes beyond the basics and includes an introduction to field, agility, and conformation.
There is such a wealth of in-depth information to make this book an essential.

  2. The personnel publishing this manual have contrinuted thought to the patrons that have recently purchased this animal. Contains explanatory categories, insighting assistance for maintainence and essential divisions. This particular guide is more advanced than it's annotated predecessors, which are not recommended in the economical area. Category fluency at it's peak, no truncating to produce a shorter, less fluent, inexpensive hardback. D. Coile, without slightest doubt, has expertise in animals and other natural lore. Chronologically a towering example, an economical and cheap purchase and most likely well spent publish.

  3. The Golden Retriever Handbook fills a niche for owners and breeders who are tired of the same elementary information offered in breed books but who are not interested in reading pedigrees or a kennel-by-kennel history of the breed. Instead it provides in-depth state-of-the-art information about Golden retriever medicine and physiology, hereditary health problems, nutrition, genetics and behavior--information that can make you an expert at caring for your dog. But it's not all work; there's information on training for field work, and an introduction to hunting tests, field trials, obedience trials, agility trials, and conformation shows. And of course there's just some fun stuff so you can have a good time with your dog. The text is intersperced with stunning photos of Goldens in action (no page after page of boring show photos!) and even enough information about record-setting Goldens to get you motivated to best them. It is the complete Handbook for making the most of your life with a Golden.

  4. I just bought my first Golden Retriever in March and promptly ran out to buy every book I could find on this wonderful breed. And read several more! This was my least favorite book on the subject. It has beautiful photography, no doubt, but not enough useful information on the breed. I had much better luck with other titles.

  5. This one of the best book I've ever read about GR. It give me a good information on purchasing, training, feeding, health problem, and much more. But there is 1 problem. The book doesn't tell the information on housebreaking. I strongly recommended this book for those who wants to buy Golden Retriever and for those who wants information on Golden Retriever.

5 comments about Horse Tradin'.

  1. Bought this for a friend and they were very pleased.
Wonderful to be able to find books that are not in most stores.

  2. I nearly always give my books away---which was what I did with Horse Tradin' over 40 years ago. Now I wanted to give a copy to a grand niece and was not surprised that hard copies were nearly unavailable. I was pleased to see that someone had the good horse sense to publish this Green classic in paperback for contemporary readers. Even so I paid up for a used hardback and just finished rereading the book. It would have been worth twice the price.
Probably only people that now live in rural areas can appreciate the freedom and casualness of life before World War ll. You would never know from reading these stories that Ben Green was an educated professional man. He was a self effacing gentleman that may no longer exist. Other reviewers have covered the content of the book and there is no need for my repeating. Do yourself a favor and get and read this book.
I only wish that someone would make a movie of 3 or 4 of these wonderful stories. When you read the book you will know what I mean.

  3. Ben Green's book "Horse Tradin'" will be enjoyed by about anyone from Texas or with an interest in cowboys and horses. Green was born in 1912 and this book tells stories of his horse tradin' experiences as a boy and young man in the late 1920s and 1930s before the automobile made the profession of horse trader obsolete. Green was a bit more than the simple cowboy he portrays in this book. Research into his life tells us that he was educated in Veterinary medicine at Cornell and in England, so he didn't spend all his time trying to make a buck by sharp trades.

One suspects that Green, like all good traders, stretches the truth a bit in some of these 20 stories, but there is an air of authenticity and affection for horses and cowboying that is hard to resist. "I rode into Mineral Wells one day on a new dun horse with black mane and tail that weighed about eleven hundred pounds and had a nice way of carrying himself -- a six-year old, stylish enough..." Now that's a description of a man who knows his horses. Green tells of his shenaningans as a trader, and also of the times that he was taken himself -- by a southern gentleman who sells him a blind horse and by an Indian in New Mexico who sold him wild horses tranquilized by "sleepy" grass to make them appear tame.

Green makes you long for a time gone by, capturing the feel of a cold Texas morning, the taste of "bachelor's grub" like beans, beef, and potatoes, and the virtues of "hard-twisted, ill-tempered, unbroke Mexican mules." Texans bought this book in vast numbers when it was first published and it deserves to be recalled as an outstanding bit of Western Americana.

    Smallchief

  4. I read this book many years ago and am glad to see it reissued. Even my non horsey kids enjoyed the stories. It's even worth rereading.

  5. Whoever said that Green's stories were hokey must be young, and not appreciative of bootstrap operations. Ben Green was a self-made man, sizing up opportunities as an enterprising youngster. He shows determination, he demonstrates decision-making skills, and he always plays within the framework, ever flavored with a fine-tuned sense of humor. In short, he's the sort who made this country great, and what we are woefully short of in today's crop of youngsters. I know; I'm a retired middle school teacher. I'd recommend this book to any of my former students, except most of them don't like to read.

5 comments about General Care and Maintenance of Bearded Dragons (The Herpetocultural Library Series).

  1. what do you expect...this book was written by a man who breeds bearded dragons and it is a book about bearded dragons. It is a wonderful book and tells you everything you need to know about keeping a bearded dragon whether you are breeding them or not. I personally own a 1 year old dragon, and this has been like the bible to me. Whenever something is wrong i consult this book and it will always have the answer you need. All the other books are written by herpotologists who have never actually owned, bred, or loved a bearded dragon. This book is amazingly helpful and comes from a person who knows what he is doing. I would recommend it to anyone who is planning on owning and loving a bearded dragon.

  2. I don't like this book at all, the authors only writes about keeping the bearded dragons in big outdoor vivariums, and not about having just 1-3 bearded dragons as pets.

Very little information about feeding, housing and everything you really want to know. The authors also doesn't seem to think about the bearded dragons as pets, to cuddle with and have fun with, but only as something you can breed.

I almonst never read or look in this book, and I regret that I bought it.

I rekommend Liz Palikas book "Your Bearded Dragon's Life" and the book "The guide to a owning a BD" by David Zoffer and Tom Mazorlig instead!

  3. This is a very through book on the care and maintenance of Bearded Dragons. It is excellent for the beginer lizard keeper. I highly recommend this book if you want to take good care of your Bearded Dragon(s).It contains information on their diet, vivarium design, and other very useful information. It is one of the most reliable reptile books I have read.

  4. This book is amazing!! I bought it about two weeks before my parents bought me a bearded dragon. It told me everything i need to know. It tells you everything about making terrariums and what to feed them. It also has sections on breeding and general information on the different species. This is a must buy if you are planning to raise a bearded dragon.

  5. I bought this book when my parents bought me a baby bearded dragon. this has everything you need to know about raising dragons. it tells you all the feeding instructions and it also has an extensive list of diseases and ailments and there respective symptoms. it tells you all about how to create a good terrarium. it also has information on breeding and overall care of the dragons. this is an amazing book and i would recommend it to anyone that is looking to buy a bearded dragon.

3 comments about Understanding Horse Behavior (Horse Health Care Library).

  1. Unfortunately I found this book was not only vastly lacking in educational detail, but was appalled by one of the recommendations made by the author on catching difficult horses. I would have expected a novice lay person to come up with depriving the horse of food and water in an effort to make them "dependant" upon you for thier very life (and therefore grateful to be caught and fed), however finding it in a book obviously marketed to beginners and novice horsepersons felt this was largely irresponsible. The book is also filled with biases and general assumptions about the expected behavior of horse genders and breeds. There is also a comment that Thoroughbreds are Warmbloods... ? Just wondering when this happened? There are better books out there.

  2. I agree with the other reviewer here. This book barely scratches the surface on horse behavior. To me it raised more questions than it answered. Very brief and superficial discussion. I have been involved with horses for thirty years and just recently discovered the usefulness of understanding a horse's perspective in day-to-day handling and training. If you are looking for a good book on understanding why horses do what they do and what to do about it, read all three of Mark Rashid's books, available here at Amazon.

  3. This book is very short and so is this review. I would only say that this book is good if you are a novice when it comes to horses. Anyone with experience would find this repetetive and boring. The book only covers very basic points about horses. The book also does not give details about anything- it's more of an outline. I would close by saying that this book is probably one to steer away from.

5 comments about Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care.

  1. If you own a small dog, this is a MUST READ!! The author has done a tremendous amount of reseach and has such good information. You won't be disappointed!

  2. I read the whole book Sunday and can't say enough about how wonderful it is. To be able to write like that and to give so much useful information, even references to things that are not fun for dogs to have happen to them, is a gift to all companion animals and their people. I loved the writing style and learned so much. Our pets are important family members. This book teaches you how to keep them healthier by vaccinating less, feeding them nutritional food that can in the end cost less and save on veterinary bills. The books is a great resource for everything you want to know about your dog's happiness and health.

  3. Chiclet and her "mom" have done an exemplary job of researching and compiling a much needed resource for pet owners. Scared Poopless provides a humorous, yet insightful look into the trials and tribulations encountered when caring for our beloved four-legged "kids." This book raises many questions that we have as animal guardians and encourages us to explore all available options in seeking answers. I carry it in my practice and sell it to clients at my cost.

  4. My name is April and I am the owner of Dogs On The Run.[...]Being that I am working with animals everyday and educating my staff and clients, I felt this book was not only fun but educational and easy to read. I think the auther did an outstanding job on this book and will be sure to recommend it to everyone I know who wants the "Straight Scoop on Dog Care."

  5. As both a dog owner and veterinarian by profession, I work in the world of medical science and I live in the world as a devoted dog owner. Therefore, I can truly appreciate the need for Scared Poopless: The Straight Scoop on Dog Care. Although the title might suggest the content is someone trivial, this author has poured her heart, detective skills and keen sense of intuition into real fact finding and honest answers. Her concerns should also be your concerns and her cautions, your yellow flag! In these times we are all bombarded with tons of information and often not enough time to make truly informed decisions. Therefore, I encourage you to let Jan Rasmusen be your guide to bridge the dangerous gap between advances in modern medicine and aggressive marketing campaigns fueled by drug companies to help you decide what is best for the dog in your life.

5 comments about The Cockatiel Handbook.

  1. I bought the book due to its high variety of cocktiel mutation pictures. As for a lot of the information - I agree that it is outdated and therefore may cause a problem. My avian vet agrees and has given me the heads up on what is best for my little guy. So far she has not been wrong and he has become a strong and beautiful bird since being seen by her. The best advice I can give any bird owner is to ALWAYS take your bird to an "Avian Vet" and believe their expertise over any book! Books are helpful but not always correct. The reason I mention an "Avian Vet" is because they specialize in birds. You wouldn't go to a foot doctor if you had a cold, so why would you take your bird to a cat/dog vet? There really is a difference and it shows in how they handle and understand your bird. They are sometimes hard to find, but worth looking for. Good luck and happy bird owning! :)

  2. In Matthew M. Vriends book "The Cockatiel Handbook" you will find a lot of outdated information. Following this outdated information can have a devastating result for your cockatiel, and recommend that any new cockatiel owner purchase a book about the basic care of cockatiels that is published AFTER December 1999. Follow up-to-date information from local bird clubs and organzations, as well as having annual visits to your local avian vet. If you have any questions about basic care of your cockatiel, don't hesitate to ask your vet, pet store, or local breeder.

  3. THE COCKATIEL HANDBOOK probably includes most everything you want to know about cockatiels. Matthew Vriends is a Dutch-born ornithologist/biologist with an advanced degree in zoology. He has written many books on birds, and traveled extensively all over the world including Australia, the native habitat of the Cockatiel. Dr. Vriends includes material on feeding, grooming, housing, health care, training and breeding of cockatiels which he has apparently done for years.

In his first chapter, Vriends includes an overview of what to consider before you buy your bird. Throughout his book he elaborates on these initial points. He says costs should be a consideration if you intend to have healthy and happy birds. He includes text and photographs that show the kinds of cages, aviaries, and breeding boxes you might build to house your birds. He covers the diseases, illnesses, and accidents that can affect bird health and vet bills. He describes physical attributes of cockatiels such as hooked beaks, growing claws, and flight feathers must be addressed to avoid problems.

Vriends suggests an appropriate diet to maintain health including the types of seeds cockatiels should eat, their vitamin requirements and vegetable preferences, and daily water intake. Vriends says the following, "No matter how hard you try, you cannot give your cockatiels the type or great variety of food they would find in the natural habitat. Birds in cages and aviaries should therefore be given a menu that is as high as possible in quality and variety...In the last few years, 'easy -to-feed pellet diets have become very popular. These types of diets can be placed in clean feeders or dispensers, and the birds can eat when and as they choose....Extruded diets are not new...but they are the newest alternative for pet birds...a cockatiel [..] that has spent it's life feeding on a diet consisting largely of seeds is not likely to become suddenly enthusiastic about extruded diets and/or pellets. Converting a bird to such a diet can sometimes be a difficult task and may require much patience. The best method...(goes on to explain his method)..." I understood Dr. Vriends to be saying pragmatic things, not championing seeds over pellets as another reviewer suggested.

Dr. Vriends also discusses the upside and downside of whether to have more than one cockatiel and how your cockatiel might relate to children and other pets. He includes a number of photographs of children holding apparently content and loving cockatiels. He suggests ways you can interact with and protect your bird including training tips, sleeping requirements, and toys.

  4. This book has wonderful pictures but that's not what counts. I was leafing through it in the bookstore and I found some outdated information. Firstly, the author recommends a mostly seed diet with some veggies, fruits, and pellets. It is now known that seeds are fattening and should be a small part of the cockatiel diet. Pellets are the main food source. He also said that grit should be in a cockatiel's cage to help digestion. Actually, sick cockatiels may eat too much grit and DAMAGE their digestive system. This guy needs to get the facts straight. The information in this book will subtract years from your bird's life if used.

  5. This guy is wierd,I don't think he's owned a cockatiel in his life!! Not for the first time bird owner because of all the false info. Why 2 stars? It does have a few helpful tips and some cute pictures.OK to have on your shelf but your going to want a better one soon.(Don't buy his lovebird book either}
