2 comments about The Super Simple Guide To Common Fish Diseases.

  1. This is a nice book on pond and aquarium fish diseases. Lots of color photographs to help identify diseases, and suggestions for treatment.
Written with a slight British flavor and point of view, it still
gives a great deal of information. While not as in-depth as Untergasser's
treatise on fish disease, it is a good first choice to look up your ailing fish's symptoms and treatment.

  2. Part Two of this book (98 pages) describes in detail the many diseases that can afflict fish, their causes, and what to do about them. Illustrated with small but clear photos of the ailments, along with "Diagnostic Pointers" and "Treatment," this section will be useful for the hobbyist at all levels of their expertise. The final chapter of Part Two also addresses "Medicines, Sedation, and Euthanasia", and how to best quarantine a new or ailing fish, so as not to infect the rest of an established collection in your pond or aquarium.

For the beginner, Part One (58 pages) has invaluable information, and is titled "Learning the Basics". The chapter on water quality is superb, with an excellent description of the "Nitrate Cycle", which includes the ammonia/nitrite content, potentially deadly if not kept in check by testing, and especially necessary during the first few months of starting up an aquarium, sometimes referred to as "new tank syndrome." I wish I had read this book before setting up my tank, as I would have been more wary of the soaring nitrate level that caused a little fantail to depart for goldfish heaven.

Jepson writes at length about "The Five Freedoms" (developed by John Webster in 1995), which are 1: Freedom from thirst, hunger, and malnutrition. 2: Freedom from discomfort. 3: Freedom from pain, injury, and disease. 4: Freedom to express most normal behavior. 5: Freedom from fear and distress. These principles apply to all living creatures, but for the beginner fish hobbyist, how to provide them is sometimes a complex mystery, as one has to learn how to set up an "ecosystem" that is foreign to us. Veterinarian Jepson, who is a member of the British Veterinary Society among other prestigious affiliations, tells us how to achieve these goals for our finned friends, and writes in a succinct, no-nonsense style, and though the information is sometimes quite technical, it is always easy to understand.

5 comments about Basenjis (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. I bought the book to learn training techniques specific to a Basenji, and the book failed on that account. However, the book gets 2 stars because it gives a great description of the history of Basenji's, and their personalities. I found the book is better suited for you friends and family (that don't live with you), to explain why your Basenji acts so "weird"... but as for training ideas, don't waste your time/money.

  2. Although it is an older book, the tips in it are still extremely useful today. Not only does it give a shortened yet vivid history of the breed but also has vital tips for training. I have begun training my basenji puppy from the steps outlined in this book and he was been doing wonderfully! The pictures are also a really great addition. If you own, are planning to own, or even thinking of owning a basenji be sure to get this book so you know what you're getting into with this unique breed & how to deal after you get one!

  3. I was very anxious to receive my book on Bansenji's.
We have a one year old Bansenji named Sadie....she is completely different than any dog we have ever had....very sweet....but also very stubborn.....the book was very helpful in learning more about this breed of dog....very useful in training her and myself. i would recommend this book to anyone who has a basenji or are thinking of getting one....lots of very helpful, useful suggestions and great photos as well.

    linda troxel

  4. This book, although small is jam packed with the greatest information for basenji owners. It is a great way to introduce the basenji to prospective owners and makes an affordable gift to send home with puppies and their new owners.

  5. This book is a keeper for my library. It explained a lot about the quirks, care, mating and whelping of the basenji (we are about to breed with our gorgeous girl). Recommended for those on trainer wheels in the breeding and owning of basenjis.

  1. A wealth of knowledge condensed in this book. A great reference tool. Nothing speaks like the voice of experience--one has to wonder how many horses Dr. Ward has helped over the last twenty five years---a must for the serious equine competitor.

5 comments about Animal Prayer Guide.

  1. My cat was recently very ill, and I had this book not far from my reach at all times. It brought me a tremendous amount of comfort. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a deep and abiding love for all of God's creatures that he created with love and perfection.

  2. This book was so comforting to our family during the time our Boston Terrier ran away from home into the woods. We said the prayer for Return of a Lost Pet day and night. On the 11th day she was found about one and half miles from home, cold, wet and hungry. I don't think she would have lasted another day ,because it started to snow. By the grace of God she was protected by angels. She had no major injuries, only very sore paws. Two days later she's back to herself. A great book to read!!!!

  3. This book was a great inspiration for me.Remembering to keep my pets covered in prayer and protection. Wonderful ideas and thought provoking ! Always a reminder that the Lord wants our pets included in our prayers and they are important to Him.. Thanks for reminding me ! Wonderful Reading ! Highly Recommended !

  4. I use the sample prayers in Animal Prayer Guide daily for my two cats, Sylvester and Rocky. What a great book! The sample prayers are so handy to have, and the whole book is so encouraging. I really like the Blessing of the Animals Service, too. It explains how God wants all His creatures healthy and well, and is an essential daily tool for your animal companions.

  5. I read Niki Behrikis Shanahan's book, Animal Prayer Guide, and used the Memorial Service in it. Having this Memorial Service readily available was especially helpful, as I was at a loss for words or Scriptures to use during this traumatic time. I love the prayers for saying grace, for sick pets, the Blessing of the Animals Service, and all the other prayers that have been prepared and ready for you to customize. She also has interesting stories and photos throughout the book. I'm glad I have this book on hand for any situation that may come my way as a pet parent.

2 comments about The Simple Guide to Grooming Your Dog (Simple Guide to...).

  1. I found this book to be more focused on the bathing process and not much at all on cuts. Its filled with too much common sence information. Alot of words, not much useful info. Out of all my materials on grooming, this has been the one I just leave at home. Sorry.

  2. This is definitely a great source of information for those who wish to groom their own pets.

5 comments about Bringing Light To Shadow: A Dog Trainer's Diary.

  1. I read this is about an hour of skimming, an interesting project, but not I fear a good use of time and energy. This book feels like the mandatory "see what I can do" dog trainers book. Why keep a dog that fights /attacks your dogs and bites people? This dog has bitten several people, would you ever be able to trust a dog like this?

I am glad the writer wrote this, when people with aggressive dogs call me, I refer them to this book, so they can see how long, slow, and possible no results, the process is of attempting to rehab a biting dog.

  2. This book and the author's work were inspiring to me as a dog owner and trainer of my own dogs. It gave me perspectives and encouragement to use patience. In the descriptions and journals of her trials and progress with Shadow, Dennison outlined usable and applicable formats and plans for reaching troubled dogs and establishing and keeping their trust and loyalty. Most of all, I laud her faith in herself and in Shadow despite any measurable setbacks and lessons.

  3. "Bringing Light to Shadow" is the daily journal of a skillful dog trainer's experiences as she gradually modified the behavior of a human-aggressive Border Collie. She succeeded with this difficult dog because of her understanding and perserverance, and with the help of a wise mentor and several patient and helpful friends. Shadow's story is an inspiration to anyone who has a similar dog and is wrestling with the difficult choice between behavior modification and euthanesia.

  4. In my mind, this is the best, most comprehensive book on the market on the subject of rehabilitating a dog who has "baggage."

Why? Because it explains in heartfelt detail everything that can go wrong or right in the process of retraining and does so through personal experience of an expert trainer. As Yogi Berra said: "In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is."

It also reveals how we humans we will ride the highs and lows of a journey that is at times filled with joy, hope, and exuberance, and at other times great disappointment and guilt.

In the end, it is also a "how-to" book for everyone who loves a scared dog, and who has the dedication and perseverence required to keep working.

  5. Dennison's Bringing Light To Shadow: A Dog Trainer's Diary provides the diary of a dog trainer who turned an aggressive rescue dog into a good pet. Shadow lashed out at people without warning and was dangerous; Dennison was a pro dog trainer who faced a real challenge with her new Internet acquisition. Her mistakes and successes come to life in a diary which tells of a successful achievement.

5 comments about Afternoons with Puppy: Inspirations from a Therapist and His Animals.

  1. Very impressed with the work that Dr. Aubury has done with his therapy work with the help of animals especially dogs. Interesting and fun to read his life's work. This book is an inspiration to do therapy work using animals.
Thank you Dr. Aubury for your work in therapy and sharing what you have learn that helps you and patients.

  2. I'll never look at a golden the same way again! Not a pet, but a family member with unique contributions to make! What a beautifully written, flowing account of how lives can be enhanced and made truly better with the wisdom of animals.

  3. What a great insight into the world of animal assisted therapy! You get a genuine sense of the love and compassion Dr. Fine has not only for his animals, but also for his patients. His animals are lucky to have him!

  4. What an inspiring book! Dr. Fine delights the readers with stories that demonstrate the compassion and intuition of animals in a therapeutic alliance with people in pain. The healing and growth that occurs as a result of the collaboration between Dr. Fine and his 'assistants' serve as a reminder to us all of the powerful positive impact of our four legged friends.

  5. Afternoons With Puppy leaves you feeling uplifted! Fine allows the readers to get a glimpse into how he incorporates the animals in his therepy. The stories in the book are truly heart wrenching. As I read the book you could see how important a role animals can play in our lives. So many lessons can be learned from them (which Fine helps us understand). The book is well written and should be read by all pet lovers!

5 comments about Psychological Dog Training: Behavior Conditioning with Respect and Trust.

  1. here is a wonderful handbook for the dog owner who wants to learn about dog training. it follows an eight week group obedience class by given by the trainer, c.w. meisterfeld. i am a professional dog trainer and my classes are modeled after this very book! as a result, i have achieved great success with my programs and my classes are always very well attended with very few dropouts!! i recommend this book for any serious dog trainer, or for the average home trainer. don't miss this one!!

  2. This book is the best dog training book I have read. The 8 week training course taught me how to train my dog without pain, and explains common problems on the way though each step - I learnt training a dog takes time and patience. In the past I was told force or dominance was the only way to train, I found after reading Jelly Bean Verses Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde the dominate training and yelling was most likely what was causing the problems. My dogs no long fight or bite which is great. This book and Dr Meisterfeld's other books (Jelly Bean Verses Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Dog Whisper, and Dog and Human Behavior) has not only changed my dogs life but my life too. I am so thankful for Dr Meisterfeld's information and knowledge of the domestic dog. When I put his philosophy in to practice, my dogs problems faded away. Well worth reading.

  3. Having previously read Mr. Meisterfeld's JELLY BEAN VS. DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE in which he kept referring to his philosophy of psychological dog training with trust and repect, I bought the book hoping to find the answers I didn't get in that book. I won't say it wasn't interesting and if you're looking for an informative, positive way to train your dog in the basics, beginning with sit, etc., this is the book. However, it reads like the transcript of his 8-week training session, with narrative questions from his students.
Fortunately, my dog is already trained in advanced obedience so I was disappointed that that was all the information and that problem-solving is not addressed. At the end of the book are plenty of testimonials from Meisterfeld converts but they're always vague about how they solved their individual problems. At the back of the book you'll find plenty of opportunity to buy additional books, videos or to enroll in his apprenticeship program to become a trainer. I agree with his philosophy, at least I think I do. I'm just not sure what it is and I don't care to have to buy another book to find out.

  4. Five years ago this book totally changed our dog's life---and ours, for the better. The book does take some study, notetaking, researching and retraining of your own attitudes and behavior, but once understood, it is the most effective and compassionate, mutual respect training system I have ever tried. It can save problem dogs. In my book, Meisterfeld is the Einstein of dog training. Now, in our travels, we often meet people struggling with problem dogs (straining-at-the-leash, inattentive, disobedient), and with their permission, after a 5-15 minute training session, they are heeling and paying attention. The owner's reactions are of amazement and disbelief and they usually call their spouses over to witness the new behavior for themselves. Meisterfeld stresses that both owners AND their dogs need to be trained. When talking to people with problem dogs, we always recommend Meisterfeld. Meisterfeld gives hope and solutions to owners of "problem" dogs (actually, untrained owners are the source of problems). Once you witness the effectiveness of his system it would be impossible to criticize his principles and logic.

  5. This book is a verbatim regurgitation of some dog training classes conducted by the author. NO SOLUTIONS are put forward from which readers can learn or apply to their own situations...

Unsure about the credentials of the author, as sometimes he claims to be a "Dr.", other times not, and certainly no reference as to what his real training (if any) is. No documentation or curriculum vitae is available despite searching.

5 comments about The Original Book of Horse Treats: Recipes You Can Make at Home for Your Horse.

  1. I received this book as a gift several years ago and have purchased it as a gift several times, since. There are a lot of good recipes for treats and mashes as well as fly spray recipes, home-made fungus cures, etc. You'll refer to it, often.

  2. This had some pretty good recipes in it (I recommend Miss Koko's Biscuits), but many were very time-consuming and hard to prepare, like stuffing apples. Also, I found it frustrating that about 70% of the recipes required horse-specific foods like hay cubes, etc. Of course, if you own a horse, this is not a problem. If you want a good, easy, homemade horse treat (besides the ones in the book) that horses love, try mixing:

    1 1/2 grated carrots
    1 1/2 grated apples
    1/2 cup molasses
    10 oz. rolled oats
    4 oz. wheat flakes

Cook for about one and a half hours at 325 degrees F.

  3. I watched the author prepare a recipe on TV. On a program called Petsburgh USA hosted by animal planet :o) With the test horse there and watching her create these recipies I was amazed :o) Today I have boughten this book right here at Amazon.com..My horses will love these, aside from there regular treats of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and ritz crackers :o)

  4. This book is great you can finds so many ideas to pamper your horse with. Even though I don't own a horse (yet)all the horses in the barn love taste testing them. Its great for Christmas presents and most of all the recipes are easy and inexpensive, some of the recipes you can eat too!

  5. This book provides the beginner to the expert with new and fun ways to papmer your horse with treats you've made. For me the best part is watching him enjoy what I've made as opposed the the store bought varities. It has hints for all around care as well as grooming recipies for flies, tail rubbing, etc. A great addition to anyones horse book collection.
