2 comments about The Lord God Made Them All.

  1. I bought this for my husband. This is part of his favorite series. He really enjoyed it.

  2. I ordered the audio version, which I really enjoyed listening to, especially with British (Yorkshire) accent of the actor. I have always enjoyed the James Herriot books, except for his free use of profanity.
Otherwise, it was very enjoyable listening.

5 comments about It's Not the Dogs, It's the People! A Dog Trainer's Guide to Training Humans.

  1. This is an awesome book! If you have watched the Dog Whisperer at all, this book parallels Cesar's style and helps with the interview and talking to people one on one when figuring out what is really going on with the dog and human. If you truly want to help people and their dogs this a good book to get your confidence up and in their door.

  2. Although I not a "clicker trainer" (I use those "mean methods"), I enjoyed this book. It has helped me to become a better group training instructor. The author and I might disagree on dog training methodology but we do agree on the people training methods. I have been able to manage the training groups better, with people and their dogs having better learning success. This is a good book for anyone who instructs the public in dog training no matter what method they use.

  3. I have been working with dogs for over 30 years and a service dog trainer for the last nine. I have just started my own private training business and this book was a refreshing read. Having worked with many people and their dogs, I could relate to many of the personalities described in the book. Reading this book was positive reinforcement for me and helped me realize that I have many of the tools to get my business up and running. It gives lots of helpful suggestions on how to work "with" people, encouraging them to understand and hopefully agree with you even if your suggestion differs from what they originally thought; making them think it was their idea. Expect the unexpected when working with people and their dogs. Relax and get ready to smile and learn.

  4. This is a good book to help teach those at the "other end of the leash." Information can be direct but most communication is by perception.

  5. I've been a professional animal trainer for 20 years and I still found this book very helpful. I was a psychology major in college and knew much of the stuff in the book, but I was fascinated by the way Nicole applies many of the principles for dealing with people, to dog training. Everybody can learn something new from this book, and the tips on dealing with the individual personality types was described in detail and applied to a dog training setting. Even the concepts I already knew about were enforced in this book and it helped me to refresh my memory and once again work on my people training skills...because as they say...it really IS not the dogs, it's the people.

2 comments about Living with a Jack Russell Terrier: Book with Bonus DVD (Living With a Pet Series).

  1. Very pleased with "Living with a Jack Russell Terrier! This book covers what I needed to know about Jack Russell Terriers without being an overwhelming book. I was pleased to see that it also covered training for Agility and other special areas of interest beyond regular obedience!

  2. I enjoyed this book plus the timing of the supplier shipping it out next day air allowed me to know just what our family was getting into the following day when we went out to the breeder's farm to pick out Jillian. What a companion dog! I sat up until 12:30 PM and was able to easily scan the relevant, well written issues any perspective JRT owner should know about. I have owned three other breeds and everything MS. Morningstar shares and teaches in this concise text was on the money. I will, of course, read the later chapeters more thoroughly as Jillie matures and grows from her current 5.3 pounds. I think that this is a great reference text which should be easy to resell back to the supplier or to a used book store if the decision not to purchase a JRT is made. It is an excellent "check out the dog breed" book.

5 comments about Marine Chemistry.

  1. This is not a picture book, nor is it a book of anecdotal information based on myth-information.
It is factual information written in easy to understand language, based on accepted scientific facts.
You can search the internet for hours,or just get it all right here.
People often accept unresearched opinions as fact, this is what causes most people to fail.
You will find plenty of bogus info, geussing and twisted opinions online.
Many people don't even bother to research the online info, make poor judgements ,and lose livestock.
The choice is yours, get the the facts right the first time, or this book will haunt you everytime you make a mistake on your aquarium.

  2. This book should be in every aquarist's library whether you are just a novice starting you first marine aquarium or an experienced hobbiest wanting to revisit concepts in water chemistry management. If you are a novice, you may want to pace yourself reading the material. The material may take the non-science oriented person time to understand some of the discussion on chemical reactions and the chemical equations associated with those reactions, but the manner in which the material is presented allows for comprehension and practical application of the information. Examples of information presented include the intricate relationship of pH, calcium and alkalinity, the remineralization cycle and impact of organic materials, total dissolved solids and generation of phosphoric compounds (all with relevant chemical equations) in the aquarium and finally the latest techniques in water purification. The best aspect of this book is after the scientific discussion, the author explains how to use this information in a practical manner to achieve optimal water parameters in the aquarium. After you finish reading the book, you are sure to use this as a reference in your aquarium library.

  3. I have been reading the internet non-stop for past 1 month !! I have spent over 150 hours reading various topics related to aquariums. In addition i have read over 5 books in this 1 month about aquariums. This all was motivated after my first fish died. As a well educated person, i have gone from complete idiot to an advanced (theoretically) aquarist in this 1 month period. So i have the unique perspective of what a novice beginner needs to know to start an aquarium (freshwater, brackish or marine) and i have the theoretical knowledge needed by an advanced aquarist who wants to run a reef system / planted freshwater. So, after having spent a month on nothing but reading books and internet, i can make good judgement on which is a book to buy and which is worthless. I can say this book is excellent reference material as well as introduction to water chemistry. A must have for beginner to intermediate level aquarist. The author has presented complex material in a well written form. The degree of difficulty in understanding this book depends on your understanding of chemistry and formal education or time spent in aquarium hobby. Considering the prices of other books, i would say this book is a bargain. It can be useful even to a freshwater or brackish water aquarium, because of the knowledge one would gain about water chemistry. my only complaint is that the author has failed to address the role Potassium (K), which makes up a bigger ppm in water more than many of the other elements discussed. That would have made this book complete. Also the table of seawater elemental composition would have been more complete if it presented amount of Carbon present in the form of dissolved CO2. I am writing these tiny criticisms in the hope that the author would come across this review sometime. I reviewed numerous books at 4 different bookstores before i picked some of the books i need to add to my collection. One of my criteria is that a book i bought should stay useful as a reference book, even if i finished reading it. And this is the first book for which i felt like writing a review in amazon.

  4. As my specialty is in psychology and human behavior (I am an avid hobbyist in my spare time), I tend to be suspicious of the motives of individuals who write reviews that blindly spit angry and critical remarks, but fail to substantiate their comments with any real reasons. Doubting the validity of the negative review, I bought the book anyway. I have to say that my suspicions were confirmed and I have been nothing but impressed with this useful, explanatory, and in-depth discussion of marine aquarium chemistry.

Marine Chemistry is a book that can better equip the novice and even the most advanced hobbyist in making the best possible choices about how to maintain water chemistry. It helps take the guesswork out of deciding which water care products promote a healthy environment and conversely, which ones could be detrimental. (The index even includes sample calculations on determining how much of specific additives are required to maintain water parameters; this is not something that I have seen included in other books, nor is it usually on manufacturers' websites/labels. There are several "before" and "after" photographs of aquarium specimens showing the impact that elements can have on their care). Further, the book discusses basic principles of maintaining important aspects of water quality, such as calcium, for instance, and why certain methods are advantageous to others in various situations (e.g., kalkwasser vs. calcium chloride). These and others are issues that most, if not all, marine aquarium hobbyists have dealt with, or will deal with, at times during the course of their participation in the hobby; this alone makes the book very valuable. I have found that an initial read-through has been excellent review of basic concepts (e.g., explanation of alkalinity and pH) and has exposed me to newer, unfamiliar ideas (e.g., supporting arguments for strontium and iodine use based on marine biology and chemistry). I keep this book accessible and refer to it often. I feel confident that as I continue to become increasingly competent in this hobby, I will continue to be able to reference information in this book, progressively deepening my proficiency in the hobby.

As a last comment, in my opinion, the information in this book is as up-to-date as any marine aquarium hobbyist of any skill level needs it to be. Further, it explains concepts in a comprehensive, yet easy to understand, manner, whereas articles written in Reef Central magazine tend to be verbose and seem to reflect an effort of the author to talk over the head of their readers.

  5. This is a pathetic rushed effort. If you are looking for up to date
information about the chemistry of modern reef keeping it is not in this
book. Go read 'Reef Central' magazine for free.

4 comments about Your Dog and Your Baby: A Practical Guide.

  1. This book looks like a free publication that you would pick up at your vet. It does have very good information but I wouldn't pay over $5 (total) for it.

  2. Excellent book. We have two Rhodesian Ridgebacks that were the focus of our universe for five years until our son was born. They are well trained but we had no idea how they would react to a new addition. We wanted to respect their feelings and not have any problems because of things we did wrong. This book was really helpful. We took a lot of advice from this book and we have not had any problems. Our son is two and he loves the dogs. The dogs are very tolerant of his antics and seem to love him too. I think dogs and kids can be great friends if their owners facilitate this process.

  3. This book had the best advice. She really understands the importance of positive interactions between parents, babies and dogs. She gives specific answers to specific problems that are doable. I highly recommend this book. It's an easy read, and packed with useful information. She takes the positive approach to working with your dog and your kids too. It has helped me and our 7 y.o. "baby" poodle, who was the big baby before my son came along. This book was essential in helping to make a smoother transition. I couldn't find even close to the amount of information in this book in other sources. The vet gave us a one-page flyer, and Dr. Sears recommends finding another home for your dog! I use it as a reference, and highly recommend it to every parent with a dog, wether you have a "problem" dog or not, it helps you to know what to do to teach your dog how to handle the big changes and not make mistakes even with the best of intentions (like giving your dog extra attention when the baby isn't around- gives the dog the message that when the baby isn't there, she gets attention, so the baby is a bad thing).

  4. This is essential reading for all Mums-to-be and new Mums. It prepares the dog owning family for the arrival of the new baby, teaches how to avoid problems when baby does arrive and how to have a happy baby/dog relationship from day one. It teaches how to solve the problems before they happen by preparing your dog for the birth of your baby.

I am a dog behaviour counsellor and I recommend this book very strongly to all pregnant women with a dog in the family.

5 comments about Old English Sheepdogs (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. This is an awesome little book for an awesome breed of dog. For its size, this book packs in a lot of really good information for the OES owner or potential owner. My OES is six months old now and I have found this book to hit on everything I needed to know to take care of this little guy. Responsible dog ownership entails a lot of work and this book will be a big help for anyone thinking of adopting this breed. It is a big help when you can get solid information from very experienced OES owners and breeders.

The one thing I think the book should have emphasized a little bit more is the amount of time and work that has to be put into maintaining these dog's coats. It can be a little overwhelming when every time you take these guys for a walk in the woods you end up having to spend an hour brushing them out.

This really is a great little book for anyone thinking of adopting this breed. I can speak from experience when I say these guys are not for the casual dog owner and they are not for everyone, and it will do the owner and the dog a great service to read this book so that you can get a head start on being a good OES owner. These guys are a lot of work but they are more than worth the effort.

  2. In comparison to other books about specific breeds of dogs, this stands out as an exception. Full of history, care and disease information about Old English Sheepdog. I keep copy on my coffee table. Constantly looking up details as my OES grows through puppyhood.

  3. As a proud owner of my 3rd OES, this is a wonderful basic book...written with humor...and some great photos!

  4. As a O.E.S.owner and breeder I found this to be a MUST for any new O.E.S. owner. After reading the book cover to cover I believe it has the most accurate information and advise of any Dog book that I have ever read on O.E.S. My compliants to anyone to had anything to do with the information included in this book. Even a layman can tell that the photos were of well breed and well cared for animals.

  5. According to the cover, this book was written as a "Pet Owner's Guide" and truly lives up to it's name! It is an excellent tool for anyone who is interested in purchasing an Old English Sheepdog puppy as a companion or family pet. There is also a section that informs the reader how to find an adult dog and explains about breed rescue programs.

The author completely covers all aspects of Old English Sheepdog ownership, beginning with how to find the 'right' puppy or adult. It is written in a clear, easy to understand style while realistically informing the prospective owner of the "cons" as well as the "pros" of living with an Old English Sheepdog. The book contains many color photographs some of which illustrate the versatility of the breed.

As an owner, breeder and exhibitor of Old English Sheepdogs for 27 years, I feel this book is a "MUST READ" for anyone considering this breed as a pet.
