4 comments about The Quaker Parrot: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. Alot of information from choosing the right parrot, taking care of it, training, and health. Very helpful.

  2. There is very little to take issue with in this book-- but if you didn't know the title you might just as well think you were reading a book on Amazons, Greys, or any number of other parrots. The information is extremely generic with the exception of a few passages here and there. I really don't think this is the author's fault- and the info is useful- but if you want a really good feeling for what it's like to own a QUAKER- you should also buy Mattie Sue Athan's outstanding book. That said, the one thing I do object to here is this author's claim that any household with cats and Quakers should have the cats declawed. That may be fair to the birds but is an incredible injustice to the felines. If you can't keep them separate, you might be better off not having one or the other. Overall, a solid book but if I didn't already have a Quaker this book would not have shown me how amazing these birds are! They are incredible.

  3. When I first bought my Quaker, I didn't know the first thing about parrots. Fortunately for both of us he was so young he couldn't come home yet. I bought this book and read every page religiously. She gave me so much insight into what my bird would behave like, look like, eat, want, you name it. Her writing was easy to read and understand. She herself owns Quakers, so she is accustomed to their behavior, behavior problems, quirks, eating habits, likes, dislikes, etc. By the time I was done reading the book, I felt like the expert; from cage purchase to food selection to an attention schedule. My bird and I are a happy family now, and I still refer to my book when I need help. I highly recommend it to any Quaker Parrot owner.

  4. An experienced parrot owner and breeder myself, I found little to disagree with in this book. Ms. Higdon's writing is clear, informative, and easy to understand. She obviously knows her subject, and she writes well. Her sly but gentle sense of humor is evident and enjoyable. The information presented is accurate, up-to-date, and covers most of the things a new Quaker owner will need to know. She portrays the personality and characteristics of the Quaker quite well and makes several excellent points, such as the fact that talking ability should be a secondary rather than primary concern when choosing a parrot for a pet, that are seldom made in other books. The focus of this book is quite different from Theresa Jordan's handbook - it contains no information pertaining to breeding and may not be of interest to the breeder or experienced Quaker owner. If, however, you have newly acquired a Quaker or are considering getting one, I would highly recommend it.

5 comments about Born To Win: Breed to Succeed.

  1. Laymans genetics is a good term for this book. I am 4 years new to the dog world and this book laid out important information in a way that kept me interested! Most books are either so complicated as to be boring or so simple that you come away with nothing but verification of something you've already read. Not this book - it is perfect and the advice is invaluable. I will keep this book forever!

  2. Patricia Craige, who ranges from top Norweigan Elkhound breeder to top dog show competitor, shares her insights in the canine field to a new audience eager to eat her every word. Why do I give this author such high acclaim? For three simple reasons:

a). Mrs. Craige shows the reader many examples of dogs who have succeeded inm both the show ring and the whelping box. Many dogs, ranging from the top-producing dog of all time to the dog with the most Best-In-Shows (the highest honor at any dog show), are shown, with in-depth study on how the greatest of dogs made their way to the top.

b). The book is very well understood thanks to the authors' personal experience. Mrs. Craige is an owner-handler, the lowest on the totem pole in the canine realm. However, one of her glorious Elkhounds became the top dog all breeds in the year 1970. This astounding tribute to the hard work and dedication she put into breeding and raising top dogs is followed up with a string of top dogs of any breed. She also bred, owned, and handled the top Elkhound of all-time and one of the top winning hounds of all-time with sixty-six all-breed Best-In-Shows. Her last big winner was shown from 1993-1995, daughter of the top winning Elkhound and two-time Westminster Hound Group winner (Winning at Westminster is the highest honor any owner, handler, or breeder can aspire to). Despite all of this, the author's down-to-earth writing style solaces the reader, allowing the reader to thoroughly enjoy the book.

c). Why don't you tell me? THere are so many reasons to applaud this book. I am sure that if you were to add it to your collection, you'd find your own reasons to back up the notion that this book truly is BORN (err, published) TO WIN!!

  3. A magnificent source of history, technique, philosophy and guidance for the serious dog breeder and exhibitor. Examines history and trends in many breeds. Acquaints you with the greats on four legs as well as two. Not a light read, but definitely worth the effort.

  4. This book has taught me and has had me understand just what it takes to be BORN TO WIN :BREED TO SUCSEED a must read for all dog people of all experiences. The way Mrs. Trotter has wrote this book anyone can understand just how to get the job done.

  5. A great book, full of important information for breeders. One of the real strengths of the book is the section on genetics and inheritance. I've read a reasonable amount on gene theory but this book really clarified how things work. I also really like the section on litter evaluation. Ms Trotter's style is emminently readable, and certainly one can't argue with her experience in breeding for success!

3 comments about Winning at Halter.

  1. This book was bought as a gift for my daughter who will be starting a young horse in halter this year. She is delighted with the book. She says it is informational and easy to understand.

She is excited to try the techniques in the book when Spring arrives and she can work with her horse.

    Winning at Halter

  2. This book goes into extreme detail requiring extreme investment in preparing horses for halter classes. While the advice is very good and you can see what lengths some are willing to go to, it goes far beyond most people's capacity. As a Foundation Quarter Horse owner and breeder, I will take a lot of the advice to heart, but there's a lot that, for my type of showing, is way over the top.

  3. This was a really good book, covering many basics in the conditioning, feeding and grooming of halter horses. It was clear, concise, and easy for most levels to understand. I would not say it is for someone brand new to horses or showing though. There were tips on handling and showing stallions as well as an explanation of why acupuncture is used on halter horses. I would have like to have seen more info on actually being in the show pen, little tips and secrets that can be helpful when showing.

5 comments about The Natural Horse: Foundations for Natural Horsemanship.

  1. This book presents information on how to bring our domestic horses back to a natural, healthy lifestyle. Jaime (the author) takes vital information from the wild horses and uses this information to create better living conditions and practices for our horses. This book really shows how far we have brought the horse away from his natural ways, and it outlines how we can help our horses to become happier and healtier in simple, inexpensive ways. I've used this information and my horses are doing better than they've ever done. I have several of Jaimes other books also and all my horses are barefoot and completely sound and healthy.

  2. The Mustangs of the olde and now west , I came acroos my first herd of wild Mustangs in 1970 in New Mexico , my two young sons Simon and Paul, looked with great amazement at the bold magnificent creatures untouch by man, not molested , standing in natural beauty. Not shoed , but feet/hoofs that could travel over all natural terrains with ease. This book express what we should do in keeping healthy , strong ,horses trained with natural horsemanship and experiencing
the natural strenght of a true heathy and contented , happy horse that performs with ease. Our own horses are just that , natural , just as God created them , but raise with Natural Horsemanship training by my son Simon.
Great book by Jaime Jackson worth puting in your libary.

  3. This book is fundamental, in multiple ways. The main topic described and discussed is the horse's hooves. Anyone who knows horses understands that hoof care is truly fundamental to the soundness of the horse. This is the best explanation I have ever seen of how nature intended horse hooves to function, and how our removal of horses from their natural environment impacts their hooves, thus their ability to move as nature meant them to. The author's deep and broad knowledge of horses is especially to be appreciaed. In addition to opening our minds to a greater understanding of their natural locomotion, he also explains clearly many other apsect of horse behavior in the wild, and how their needs change as we put them in unnatural situations and make unnatural demands on them. Anyone responsible for a horse's care, rider or not, should be required to read this book. Anyone who just loves these magnificent beasts will appreciate them all the more for the enhanced understanding of them this book makes possible. If you are thinking of acquiring a horse, make this the first book you read.

  4. What a wonderful celebration of the horse and the training and communication that goes along with owning one of these majestic animals!!! This is a beautiful book for anyone who loves the larger than life quality and grace of the horse. The photos are wonderful! Another one of my favorites is a training book called Horse, Follow Closely by GaWaNi Pony Boy. Check them both out!!

  5. Jamie definately shows us a refreshing look at the natural horse thru the horses eyes. Readers will come away from this book with a new understanding of why horses do what they do and why humans have errored in the past. Take a real look at what we thought a hoof should look like and now see " the natural hoof" and it's advantages. Getting back to the basics will shatter modern beliefs about horse care. This information has been slow coming and will take generations to take hold, and it will!

  1. When I bought my Lhasa Apso, this book kept me from freaking out! It does an excellent job of explaining the breed and all the challenges (and joys!) of owning one of these wonderful dogs. I use this book as my Lhasa "Bible" and it has helped me raise a healthy and very happy little puppy!

5 comments about Frenchie Kisses.

  1. My second grader and I love looking at, and reading this book. I keep it out on the coffee table, and every so often we flip through it or leave a page open to look at as we walk by during the day. We own a Frenchie, very similar to the ones in the book, and it reminds us so much of our puppy.
Definitely recommend it to any Frenchie lover!

  2. ... than Frenchie Kisses. I work in the IT industry, and I'm now working from home. My little "Bat Dog" is always with me! It's wonderful to see images of other Frenchie faces reflecting the same adoration that I see in mine. Heartwarming!

  3. Beautiful photos marred by intrusive gratuitous captions.I gave my copy to my 18 month-old neighbour who loves our dogs and will enjoy both the pictures and the drippy text.Could still be a museum gift shop book, but in the toddler section.

  4. I saw this book at PetSmart and fell in love with the photographs and captions, and was thrilled to find it on Amazon. Amanda Jones captured the essence of the dogs she photographed very well, and managed to match appropriate celebrity quotes about dogs as well as provide random humorous captions for the featured shots. I have this book on our coffee table, because we enjoy paging through it often. We have a Frenchie and have found these dogs have particularly hilarious personalities - Amanda Jones has done a great job in capturing the heart of French Bulldogs in this book. It's a 'must have' for owners and lovers of this breed.

  5. A great book for "easy reading" and enjoyable times. Brings a smile to your face without even trying. To know the BRENCHIE BREED is to know this book.

5 comments about The Gift of Jazzy.

  1. Cindy Adams has a hit here. She is very good at writing a memoir, while incorporating the story of her dog. Cindy is the writer of a gossip column for the New York Post. Hobnobbing with celebrities and their quirks is nothing compared to the quirky dog that has come into her life and stollen her heart.

Because of the dog, Cindy, dressed in her nightgown and Amilda Marcos, dressed to the nines, spent Christmas locked out of her apartment, sitting on the floor eating McDonald's hamburgers and fries.

Taking her dog to a dinner party ended in disaster, with Cindy drenched in wine and worried that the white carpet would be permanently ruined.

While on vaccation, Cindy had to sneak into the hotel room of a stanger, to excavate Jazzy from the suitcase of a Japanese tourist, before he hitched a ride back to Japan.

Cindy was on the phone speaking to a client, when Jazzy took a flying leap off her apartment balcony. Cindy threw down the phone, and caught him in mid air.

Jazzy and Cindy took a trip to the counry. She found that Jazzy was a New York dog, who was more accustomed to the sound of the garbage truck, then the sound of crickets with insomnia.

I found The Gift of Jazzy to be both heart warming and entertaining. I really enjoyed Cindy Adams sense of humor and finding out that many celebrities prefer their dogs over any other relationship.

  2. I found that this book was very entertaining and heart-warming. Cindy Adams wrote this story from her personal experiences. The funny antics of Jazzy, all the way to the celebrities mentioned, is her story. It is, what it is. If you like it, it's because it's a good re-telling of life going on after a loved-one passes, and how a little dog helped in the healing process. If you didn't like it, at least give Cindy Adams the respect and acknowledgement that she has the ambition to write a book, of which many people wouldn't even know where to begin with. At the very least, it doesn't deserve the nasty negative comments.

  3. I'am sorry I bought this book, it is not a good read

  4. Great book for dog lovers. Cindy Adams tells the story of losing a loved one and how a very small dog came into her life and captured her heart forever.

  5. Gift of Jazzy is really two books in one. The first one talks, with startling tenderness (which you wouldn't expect from Cindy Adams) about the cruelty of old age and sickness and the thoughtless stupidity of bystanders to it. After 40 years of marriage Adams's husband, Joey was physically breaking down and dying piece by piece it was incredibly sad. When her husband finally is gone the void was huge and friends decided to cheer her up by handing her a tiny Yorkie puppy-- Jazzy.

It shouldn't have worked out. Adams was depressed and cranky and brand new puppies need lots of attention but somehow it did and page by page the old Cindy Adams comes roaring back to life. I really enjoyed this book. The stories about Jazzy, life and work in New York and the foibles of celebrities are fun. If you love dog stories this one should be on your bookshelf.
