5 comments about Raw Dog Food: Make It Easy for You and Your Dog.

  1. This book provides some great tips for switching feeding the dogs from packaged food to a Raw Dog Food Diet.

  2. I liked this book because it provided more of the logistical aspects to raw feeding. It includes how to get started, how to shop for foods, how to store foods, etc. It definitely a good book if you've decided to feed raw. If you're not yet convinced to feed raw yet and want to read more about the science behind it, try Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats by Kymythy Schultze. I think it's a more comprehensive guide on why to feed raw, where as this one is more focused on how to feed raw.

  3. This book is a great starting point for first time Raw feeding. Its light easy to read. It starts with the basics. No fuss or lectures! There is plenty of other books out there more indepth to read after you have mastered the basics.

  4. We have been feeding our 14 month rottie the raw food diet for the past 4 months. The changes in her since the switch are incredible! Fresh breath, lean physique, gleeming white teeth, and less shedding to name a few! This book would be helpful to the beginner. Two of my friends borrowed it and switched their lucky dogs to the diet. Fast read, read in a few hours, which is great so you can get started!

  5. If you are considering feeding a raw-food diet to your dog, this is the best book to get. It is simple to read and it makes feeding raw almost as easy as opening a bag of dog food. There are so many books out there that make raw feeding difficult and so many people have the "right way" but this book is simple, informative, and answers all your questions. It is written by someone who is feeding raw and has beautiful healthy dogs to show for it.

5 comments about A PocketExpert Guide to Marine Invertebrates: 500+ Essential-to-Know Aquarium Species.

  1. A necessary reference for Reef Keepers! Unfortunately as the title says it only covers 500 marine invertebrates! Dr. Shimek offers great information and recommendations!

  2. Excellent for anyone who has a saltwater fish tank. I've had fish tanks for 20 years and wish I had this resource to let me know in advance what requirements certain fish, corals and invertebrates have as far as size of tank, salinity, etc...which corals/invertebrates are easy to keep and which require way more than I could hope to provide. This is a must have.

  3. i bought this book as a biginner to quide me through the types of invertebrates, it has everything you need to know, i use it as my guide and so far it is working wonderfully. easy to read and search. it has almost all the species out there. this is the book that i would keep forever.

  4. Outstanding photographs, concise and accurate descriptions, and a nice style of writing. What more could you ask for? I don't have a reef aquarium, but I do refer to this all the time whenever I'm curious about saltwater life other than the finned variety. I've used it to pick out which types of snails and shrimp to include, and which ones to stay away from. It's not a book to read from cover-to-cover, but it's an indispensible reference.

  5. you have to keep this at your pocket while going to petshop or anytime . All main info for all categories are available

5 comments about The Dogs Who Found Me: What I've Learned from Pets Who Were Left Behind.

  1. Got the audio book. I was not thrilled with the individual who did the reading, but Ken's stories in the book were easy for me to relate to. He succinctly put into words some of the emotions involved when one is performing animal rescue, including the initial denial that an animal is meant to stay with you. Also, I think he does quite well at capturing the essence of just being one of those people who can't look away when you see an animal in need. It's a state of mind that only a certain type of person really seems to understand.

    - C.A.Wulff author of Born Without a Tail

  2. I enjoyed this book for the most part. It makes you think about all those dogs out there that need a home or ones who are out there that are being mistreated. I think it is great what Mr. Foster is doing for all those poor dogs out there. Especially Pit Bulls. I also liked all the informative information on shelters, rescues, etc in the back of the book.
The only problem that I had with the book was the writing style. It wasn't written very evenly and took me longer to get done than usual. All in all it would be a book I recommend.

  3. I took this book with me on a recent vacation and started reading it on the plane. I am a true dog lover, I have 5 of my own, but this book did not hold my interest at all. And in fact, it really bothered me. It seems to me that he assumes that if he finds a dog, especially if the dog is in need of a combing or such, that there isn't an owner that is frantically looking for that dog. He just seems to assume the dog was "abandoned" and doesn't make any real effort to find the owner, who may be heartbroken. He is very quick to judge, i.e. when he found the 23 year old woman's dog and made judgements as to her worthiness as an owner, without having all the facts.
He also seems very reluctant to take a dog in/rescue it, because it may inconvenience his life or he doesn't have room.
In one case, he took the dog he found, clear into ANOTHER state to turn it into a shelter. As someone whose petsitter lost my dog while I was on vacation, this kind of thing infuriates me! Unbelieveable. I will not be finishing this book.

  4. Not bad, as far as dog books go, just didn't make me want to keep reading. Foster did not hold my interest so he's 1 author I can scratch off my list.

It's OK, just not as good as others I have read. This book took me a while to read through because I kept putting it down and getting back to it later. Oh well.

  5. Ken Foster manages to be poignant, moving, powerful, and hysterically funny all in the same book. The Dogs Who Found Me creates a strong voice for those animals - our 'best friends' - who have been lost and abandoned, and who are utterly dependant on our mercy. Ken pulls no punches - he tells the sad, hard truths with complete honesty - but he also makes your heart soar with joy. Read this book... you'll never forget it.

5 comments about Canine Reproduction And Whelping: A Dog Breeder's Guide.

  1. Book is very helpful, answered a lot of questions I had and now feel pretty prepared for delivery of our first puppies..

  2. This is an awesome book for anyone that is interested in breeding dogs, or just for the over all general care of your pets.
I can't say enough good things about the book.

  3. Before breeding my first litter, I read anything I could get my hands on, ordered appropriate books, intensely searched online, got my emergency supplies together, my puppy exercises prepared, and my vet on standby. But in all the searching I did, these two books (this one and Puppy Intensive Care, same author) were really what I was looking for at the time. Wrapped in a neat package, they cover everything that you could experience as an emergency. Many of the questions I still had unanswered in my mind after the litters I've raised were answered in these two books. I would just add How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With as a good overall puppy development and socialization book.

  4. I will try my hardest to express in mere words how insanely wonderful this book is. Here goes.

I read several breeding books before I found this one and I found this one to have the best advice of them all. The lady is an RN midwife that works in a hospital delivering human babies. She did this for years before learning to be a dog breeder and becoming friends with a vet that is an absolute expert in canine midwifery that taught her a thing or two that's for sure. Her medical experience plus what she's learned from whelping puppies combines for one extremely objective, helpful book that is still down to earth and understandable for anybody.

  5. Lots of info looking forward to going to author's seminar next week.

5 comments about Storey's Guide to Raising Pigs: Care/Facilities/Management/Breed Selection.

  1. I bought this just after deciding with my son that we would keep his agriculture project(a nice spot gilt) and raise a litter of pigs for the next year. I have read the book from cover to cover and feel confident that I will be able to raise healthier happier pigs because I have this book. I had this guide and used it as my bible during the farrowing and it was VERY, VERY, VERY helpful. I had all of the supplies and knowledge that I needed to help with the birth of the pigs and it kept me from having to have a vet come out when the sow was having trouble with the last few pigs. A MUST HAVE if your planning on raising pigs for stock shows and don't have a clue!!! Good luck, and I hope you have as much fun raising pigs as we do!!!
    -Mel

  2. I learned some about pigs in this book but... have you ever tried to render your own lard??
This book says just to boil pig fat in water for awhile
    That won't make lard
Took me four tries to finally get it right
Practical experience taught me more than this book

  3. This is a great starter for raising pigs. It gives a lot of the basics on different breeds of pigs. The book is very helpful. Thank you.

  4. Overall, I would consider this a good but not great book. I was left with a vague feeling of incompleteness after reading it.

For example, it had several pictures of pigs with 'good muscling' (or 'nice topline' or 'great frame' or whatever). Granted, I'm a novice at pigs but it would be nice if it had pictures (preferably side-by-side) of an example of 'poor muscling' (or whatever) so I can see the difference.

I also found the 'butchering' section to be lacking. For example, when 'scalding' a carcass, it only talks about dipping the entire carcass into the hot water. Nowhere does it even mention dipping out the hot water and pouring it over the carcass (which is more manageable for a large pig). And the actual butchering (cutting up) part is minimal ('separate the carcass into the larger primal cuts with a butcher's knife').

My impression is that this book is geared more toward a small farmer wanting to raise a small herd for profit as opposed to a homesteader wanting to raise 1-3 pigs as food. It's just a different mindset. So - if you're a farmer - I would rate this book a '5'. A homesteader would still find it useful but not complete.

(I can't believe that pot-bellied pigs aren't even mentioned anywhere.)

  5. This is a must for pig raisers! I should know, I raise 5 breeding sows and write my own farm books, and I even mention this book in my resources section! It's that much of a needed book for pig farmers. Every subject you want to know about pigs is found in this book, from showing at the fair, breeding the pigs, to the business aspect of running a farm...

5 comments about Traveling With Your Pet, 10th Edition: The AAA Petbook (Traveling With Your Pet).

  1. While this book arrived too late for the actual planning of my recent trip to pick up a dog it would have saved me hours of research had I had it from the beginning. If the listings aren't complete there is certainly enough information there to give you the opportunity to find what you are looking for. Just having the central reservation lines of the large motel chains is a help in finding out if the individual properties accept animals is worth the price of the book in itself.

I found it spotty in finding information on where public areas that accepted my dog on or off leash could be located. I picked up (a lot) more and better information from the surfing the internet and talking to folks along the way.

Even with its shortcomings it was worth the money - I'll use it frequently.

  2. 7 months ago I packed a U-haul to move from Ohio to Washington (state). My two puppies made the journey with me. I don't know what I would have done without the book. It was invaluable to finding lodgings for the night. As with AAA's hotel rankings and reviews, most were dead on.

The book advertises that it contains information on dog parks. I do not recommend this book if you want information on dog parks. It would be better to research the area and its dog parks ahead of time.

  3. Good guide to have with you in your travels with your pet.

  4. Excellent, accurate book that allowed us to plan our trip without worrying about where to stay with our pet. I loaned it to a friend who was traveling out west and they loved the book so much I gave it to them and now have to buy another copy! I keep it on file should we ever have to evacuate due to a hurricane. We'll all go to the same hotel with our pets!

  5. Just put this newly purchased guide to the test during a trip through parts of Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas with our 60-pound dog. The hotel and motel listings are very accurate and up-to-date, so we had few surprises when calling to book rooms or arriving at properties. The only improvements I would suggest are more recommendations for outdoor dog play places (especially those that are leash-free) and for restaurants with outdoor dining areas that permit dogs. We had fairly good success improvising leash-free play zones in national forest areas off the highways and were able to find some eating places with patios or decks that permitted dogs...

5 comments about Learning Their Language: Intuitive Communication with Animals and Nature.

  1. As a writer of cat mysteries, I often speak to large groups of people, and they frequently ask about animal communication, since Marmalade, an orange tabby cat, (a major character in my mystery series) speaks in italics throughout the books. I answer that I know we can communicate with animals and hear what they say to us. As evidence I cite the story of Polly, my alarm clock cat. Whether people express belief or they raise their eyebrows at me, I send them to this book.

I like the way Marta Williams emphasizes that we would get further by listening than by constantly telling animals what we think. They know what we think, because they're very good at listening already.

When we take the time, as she suggests, to tell an animal "I admire your intelligence and beauty," we grow in the process. LEARNING THEIR LANGUAGE is a lesson in life skills that we all could use.

  2. This is such a fascinating topic. If you want to dive deeper I recommend "Adam's Task: Calling Animals by Name," by Vicki Hearne, which combines animal training with philosophy, linguistics, and literary criticism. It'll certainly expand your understanding of human-animal communication. If you are an animal trainer-- or even just an animal lover-- it's definitely worth checking out.

  3. This book helped me to understand the experiences I have had on my ranch with several of my anamals. I now know what took place and I agree with the author fully. I have actually used her tichnique on my "Best Friend" a Chocolate Lab, and it worked! I have also been the RECEIVER of messages.

  4. Marta Williams has done an excellent job of organizing, presenting and providing scientific back-up for her information, where appropriate. She is a teacher in the true sense of the word and patiently guides students through all the pitfalls of negative mind traps, suggesting methods to overcome initial fears of failure.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all who are truly interested in animal communication and feel it will be a good investment for you.

  5. I just finished Learning Their Language, and am getting ready to re-read it, highlighter in hand. It is that good, if your goal is to gain expertise in animal communication. I began with Carol Gurney's book, The Language of Animals, which I felt was a good starter book. It sort of primes the reader for this book. Learning Their Language was extremely well written for use as a text book/learning tool (which is the reason I wanted it in the first place) using a good combination of Ms. Williams own experiences, the experiences of her students, and liberal "homework" assignments.

This book goes a step further than most, offering techniques for communication with plants, rocks, and mountain ranges (to name a few) but Ms. Williams herself invites you to skip over any sections that are out of your range of comfort or your belief system. At the very least, when reading the plant/nature/landscape sections, you will come away with a sense that God can't be too happy with modern man's stewardship of all that we were graciously given. And that, in my humble opinion, is a lesson we should ALL learn.

5 comments about Golden Retrievers for Dummies.

  1. For someone don't know anything about dog or how to take care of a dog. It helps.

  2. I purchased this book used on Amazon shortly after I got my new golden retriever puppy, Maggie. Having wanted a golden retriever for as long as I can remember, I was so excited to bring her home even if it was in a small dilapidated cardboard box. After surviving 2 LOOONNNGGG days with a new puppy, thinking how I could have made such a mistake (at the time), I realized I needed some professional help. The book was very helpful and went on to describe issues goldens have, how to potty train, obedience train, crate train, proper food etc they need. what I really liked was not only needing puppy training like I did, I needed it to be golden retriever specific, and that it was. It tells you the types of health problems they're prone to, traits they have and things they're good at. I found it extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend it! In case you're wondering, Maggie is now a healthy, happy just had her first year birthday golden! Yeah we still have some things we need to work on, And as for me, I survived the first year!

  3. I just a got a pup a few weeks ago and I open this book daily to look something up, or to prepare for new skills I want to teach. Not all of suggestions have worked (supplementing with puppy training classes). It's probably best to have a few books on goldens - this one serves as a good general reference.

  4. I've not had a dog since I was a child so I need ALL the help I can get. The only thing I was looking for that this book didn't discuss was the topic of selecting and installing doggie doors, so for that you'll need to go elsewhere. Otherwise, I loved it.

  5. This reference book was really informational. It did however focus a lot of it on a golden retreiver puppy or how to take care of one. If you already have a grown golden retriever, I don't think this book is right for you, but it's still good at looking at health tips and information.

There are a lot of instances in the book where the author makes her own comments, as if she is talking. If that will bother you, then don't get this book.

It's a really good book if you are deciding to get a Golden Retriever puppy or new dog because it gives you fundamental things to know for taking care of a puppy or new dog coming home. I think a person should read this book before getting a dog or golden retriever because it does help educate you to learn more on the breed. However, this book is mostly generalized stuff that you can already search on the internet or online resources.

I think this book was very helpful, so I think you should get it if you have no idea on how to take care of a dog.

    See ya!

5 comments about Twisted Whiskers: Solving Your Cat's Behavior Problems.

  1. Since I am a cat lover, I had to check this book out. This book truly helps with all aspects in the way of kitty care. I've read many books on what to do or not to do with kitty behavior problems but this one is on my must have list. If you have behavior problems with your kitty, start with this one. Easy to read and great detail and clear instructions. Plus she gives a holistic bend to it. Way cool! I've order four extra copy of this book to give to my friends as a gift. Every time I'm ordering books, I throw this one along with my order. I'll have an extra copy to give to someone who may need some help with their kitty.

  2. I found this book to be both helpful and enjoyable. I have a 5 month old kitten that I have had since 3 weeks of age when he was rescued by my son. Since we have had him from so young an age, he has had some socialization issues. This book has an extensive collection of problems and solutions that I have found to be interesting and easy to implement with my cat. I think it is definitely worth having as a resource.

  3. I bought this book at the same time as I bought Arden Moore's "Cat Behavior Answer Book," & although this book is good, it's not as helpful as Moore's book. The "Cat Behavior Answer Book" gave me a more thorough discussion of issues, & more specific solutions than this book. One of my cat's issues is night-time meowing, which wakes me up, & Moore's book helped me solve the problem more than this book did.

  4. Excellent and entertaining book on understanding, enjoying, and modifying the behavior of our furry little (or big) feline friends.

  5. This book will help you know your cat better than you ever thought possible. It's a fast reading and provides lots of ideas about how to manage problems with your cat. Required reading for everyone who lives with a kitty.

5 comments about Veterinarians Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs : Safe and Effective Alternative Treatments and Healing Techniques from the Nations Top Holistic Veterinarians.

  1. On the heels of the pet food tragedies, this book reinforces my conviction that dogs are meat eaters!
We have lost two "middle age" dogs to cancer. I want to do everything in my power to prevent this from happening to my new pup.

  2. I learned alot of valuable information in this book. This is a great book to have for anyone who wants the best for their dog. I ordered several books on dogs recently and two of the books were the best of the bunch. This was one of them.

It is a great book for anyone who loves dogs and wants more information on the best ways to care for them. I would definitely recommend this book to dog lovers.

  3. This is a great resource for an animal lover looking for alternative therapies. It is easy to understand and offers options by highly respected holistic veterinarians.

  4. This book covers nutrition, supplements, herbs, homeopathy, flower essences, acupuncture, chiropractic, massage, vaccines, and a list of health problems and how to treat them. I'm not as thrilled with this book as some other readers were. It is potentially useful, but not essential. Instead, I would recommend "New Choices in Natural Healing for Dogs & Cats" and "The Nature of Animal Healing". They cover the same information but more in depth.

What I did find interesting was seeing how each veterinarian had a different treatment plan for a particular disease. While one would treat arthritis with goat's whey, another suggested Chinese herbs. Each vet found success in his or her method, and you can combine methods to suit the needs of your pet.

  5. This is a terrific reference guide for ailments that might plague our dogs, especially as they age. It gave me a few ideas that I hadn't thought about for my dogs, and they worked! Well worth the price.
