2 comments about Training the Disaster Search Dog.

  1. Knowing Shirley and having been there for the evolution of the Disaster Search Dog standards, I can say this is the best - and, so far, only - book to use for this category of training. Completely understanding what needs to be done and stating the process clearly, her book is the starting place for anyone contemplating FEMA Disaster Dog work. You need to be part of a team to complete the training, but this book will tell you what you need to do and help you make the decision to commit to the process - or not!

  2. Shirley is upfront on what it takes to become a Disaster Search team. The team is the dog and handler and while the dog may have the skills the handler also has to be prepared to handle the disaster scene.

Shirley explains how agility skills can be translated into helping your dog become a Disaster Search Dog as part of her training triangle. Shirley also comprehensively lays out training goals and plans and how to implement them with your dog to make you successful in this new training.

The Appendix information is helpful for determining if your dog would be successful as a Disaster Search Dog or if your puppy would be. There's also useful instructions on how to build your own training equipment. The book uses photographs and diagrams to explain concepts to further learning.

Shirley will be a guest author at CSDogBookReview in August 2006 and many are looking forward to her visit!

5 comments about Discus Fish (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. Very good starting point for raising discus.Well laid out, easy read, good value. I have two other books by Degen but this is the one i keep picking up to browse.

  2. I BOUGHT THIS BOOK MANY YEARS AGO AND WENT TO BUY IT AGAIN AND ENDED UP WITH THE LATEST EDITION. THE LATEST EDITION IS MISSING ALOT OF IMPORTANT INFORMATION THAT THIS BOOK HAS. IF YOU ARE IN THE BUSINESS OF DISCUS FISH THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. THE NEW EDITION HAS BETTER PICTURES BUT THAT IS WHERE IT ENDS. BUY THIS BOOK

  3. A good book for the beginning to think about keeping Discus. It provided enough information for me to make the decision to give it a try. Two years later, I still have 4 of my orgininal 6 dicus purchased, so I think it helped get me on the right track. Other books can be had with more detailed information on discus if your intent is to keep many of them and even trying your hand at breeding them.

  4. Did not appreciate a book from a library. Will be contacting the library is see if book was stolen!!!!!

  5. So far, one of the best books I have read for a beginner just like me. It is easy to read and very informative, though it may come short on some subjects.

5 comments about Backstage Iditarod.

  1. This was a great background read for the preparations that go into the Iditarod. It's a fun and engaging read--even for long-time fans of the race. There's lots of interesting background info included. Thanks June!

  2. This is a fun behind the scenes look at staging and preparing for the Iditarod. A nice blend of Who, What, Where, When, How and Why that the level of detail never gets dull. Avid sled dog fans will enjoy this along with those newly discovering the sport.

  3. Reading June's book is just like experiencing all the excitement and activity of being at the Iditarod. I've been at Anchorage for the ceremonial start and then at Skwentna to help the mushers, and reading June's book, I relived my experience. I pictured myself right there again, seeing, hearing and experiencing the Iditarod through June's descriptions. This is a must read for all who would go to Iditarod, and all those who have been, and everyone else, too! Thanks, June!

  4. This book is a fun read for those who have been to the Iditarod and those who wish they could go. Taking you thru all the steps leading up to the race, you'll think you are actually there. I've been to the race 3 times and helped a couple Iditarod mushers before the race. This book helps me relive those memories. I think you'll enjoy it very much!

  5. June Price does an excellent job of bringing you right there through it all.... if you really want to know what these mushers do, go through, and provide for their dogs, how much a part of the team they are, then read this book. It's a very well done account of the true happenings surrounding this great race. June has spent many years with these very people, researching, learning, and beautifully putting to paper, the extraordinary Iditarod, it's participants, and the dogs... Everyone who loves to gather more information about the inside of the race should put this on their MUST READ list. She takes you there, keeps you there, and gets you to the finish line... without even getting cold! :-) Thanks for a wonderful book, June.

5 comments about The Pembroke Welsh Corgi : An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet.

  1. I DID NOT READ THIS BOOK, BUT CORGIS, ESPESCIALLY THE PEMBORKE WELSH VARIATION ROCK!

  2. The New Complete Pembroke Welsh Corgi by the same author (D. Harper) is vastly superior to this book. That book contains information about corgis & no other breed. Half of the information in this book is on corgis, but the rest of this book contains generic information that pertains to all breeds. For example; the "Happy Healthy Pet" book for westies shares some identical chapters with this one.

  3. the book was great with lots of pictures and info. it was definatly worth the money. this dog is soo cute!

  4. I have just bought and read this book on Corgis for a corgi research project I am doing. It lists a brief myth of corgis with faeries and how they came to be, plus their regular history, who owns them, etc... I thought it was very good description wise, also. It did an overall description of a corgi, their parts, then gave some interesting facts about each part. The only thing I was disappointed in is when I got to Part 3 and 4 ("Enjoying your Dog" and "Beyond the Basics") of the book. It was mainly focusing on all breeds, not mentioning any specific corgi facts to watch out for. Further more, the book was showing pictures in those sections of mostly any dog but corgi. But that's me...I thought it was only going to be about corgis.

  5. A perfect book! It teaches you what to do when you bring it home, training, feeding, walking etc. Shows alot of many different pictures. It taught me all I need to know and much more!

5 comments about The Ultimate Cat Treat Cookbook: Homemade Goodies for Finicky Felines.

  1. I thought this book was going to offer recipes for dry cat treats that would stay in a container on the counter like so many of the dog treats...but it if full of recipes that require refrigeration. They are also messy treats. Just not what I thought it would be and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

  2. I cooked 12 recipes from this book following the instructions exactly. ALL my 7 cats HATED EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM!!!

  3. These are some good recipes, but what really shines is the illustrations. I will be watching Troy Cummings' career with great interest.

  4. I'm not sure why the Tuna recipe was not successful for one reviewer, because it is one of my cats' favorites (I have 4 finicky felines). Of the 4 recipes they have tried, the Tuna treats are definitely at the top of their list. While tuna is not my favorite smell, I didn't find it too offensive once cooked and the cats went wild (they even sat up, which is usually reserved for cheese treats). I would recommend this cookbook for any cat owner who wants wholesome treats that are not crammed with fillers like the store-bought ones are. I agree that this is a nice gift idea for any cat lover and have an extra copy on-hand just for that occasion.

  5. I found this cat treat cookbook to be just delightful! The recipes are fast, easy, and healthy too. What a fun way to show your cats they are special to you. There is even a recipe for catnip tea. The artwork adds a charming touch. This little book would make a great gift for any cat lover on your list.

3 comments about The Guide to Owning a Conure (Guide to Owning).

  1. It is a good book, but I was expecting something more complete and "in detail".

  2. Conure lovers... you need this book. Excellent information on the daily needs and common sense thoughts about conures. No pitty pat information, just good ole fashioned reading which will really help one increase thier knowledge surrounding these birds.

  3. Don't be fooled by this book's small number of pages. Great information on care, feeding, breeding, and even some updates on the taxonomy of conures. This book is up to date and accurate. I'd recommend it for advanced or novice conure keepers.

2 comments about The Everything Boxer Book: A Complete Guide to Raising, Training, And Caring for Your Boxer (Everything: Pets).

  1. I purchased this book after getting my first boxer. It is a very good book for the new boxer owner. I wish I would have had this book before getting my boxer- it would have been helpful when interviewing the breeder. It would also be very helpful for those who have not researched the boxer before. I did not give it 5 stars only because a lot of the information was basic dog information - education on training techniques and caring for a dog. But if you are new to owning a dog or haven't had a new puppy in a while, it would be very helpful. The information is all accurate and educational and is a good review for any dog owner.

  2. If you are a new, or even a not-so-new family member of a boxer, you will learn a lot from this book. Karla Spitzer is experienced with this breed and does a great job explaining in clear terms how to make a good life for your boxer, whether you have acquired a pup or perhaps an older rescued boxer. How I wish I had this book when our first boxer, a rescued stray, came into our lives. Sadly there are many people who bring home a boxer but are not aware of some of the special medical issues to be on the alert for and some of the special needs of the boxer as a member of your pack. With a guide like this you will have a much better experience and your boxer will be happier and healthier.

  1. From the photo on the inside front cover to The back inside cover. I doubt that you will find anyting you do not like. This Book is totally up-to-date That is what makes it so great. You are not reading a book that was how they did it in them Good Ole Days. The info and photos are all for todays German Shorthaired Pointer. 5 comments about Blessed Are The Brood Mares (Howell Reference Books).

  1. I really enjoyed this book, especially because it went into detail about what to look for in the neo-natal foal and post-partum mare. It gave distinct things to look for which helped enable me to make the decision to call my vet in the middle of the night, and eventually saved my colt's life. Indispensible book to have on the book shelf if you breed and foal your own mares. Another great thing about this book, is that it goes into detail about when to re-breed after foaling, when not to, and what steps you will go thru (explained) on how to get her pregnant. Not quite enough information for me on follicle size measurements, edema measurements, short cycling, etc., but for the most part, this is a must have book.

  2. Provides people new to breeding a good overall view of the process. It is easy to read and a good reference. This is not the highly technical manual that would turn away the amatuer. At the same time it lacks depth to be a truly serious resource.

  3. A must have for the average horse person. This book is extrememly informative, written in a lively way that keeps you reading from start to finish, and is understandable by the layman. I would recommend it highly.

  4. This book is a great resource for novice breeders. There is great information and knowledge will help you put your mind at ease. I recommend this book for everyone who is hoping for their first foal.

  5. Honestly, I have not read these professional advice books by Dr. Lose. However, If I ever have cause to need advice or mares, foals, or any other health advice on horses, I will be sure to consult her teachings on the subject. I just want to take this opportunity tell anyone interested in her current publications to please read the one book that really gives us the opportunity to have an inside look into what her world is really all about, and to see how she grew into that world. That book is "No Job For A Lady". See where it all started! What a charming and engrossing viewpoint projected by a great veterinarian in the making. Thanks, Phyllis. I read this when I was 10 years old, and 22 years later, I still remeber what I saw.
