5 comments about The Ultimate Rottweiler, Second Edition.
- I bought the first edition of this book about 11 years ago when I purchased my second Rott. Every dog owner owes it to their dog to be well informed about their dog's requirements, quirks, health issues, thraining requirements and characteristics - and this books gives you the info you need. For Rottweiler owners it is even more important to understand your breed because a Rottie out of control just reinforces the stigma attached to the breed - and they can be dangerous. Rotties are wonderful dogs and after owning Rotts for more than 20 years I have learned a lot of do's and don'ts. Do yourself a favor read this book before you get a Rottie and you and your dog will be so much better off. It includes wonderful advice on training and anything you should know to make sure your dog is well socialized, healthy and sane. I loved this book for its well rounded advice and explanations on the differend breed standards based on geography. It's basic enough for the beginner to get lots and lots of good advice even if you don't want to breed or show. Be aware of the downsides of the breed, health issues and the associated cost, exercise requirements, top dollar for good diet - it makes your dog live longer and healthier. Rotties, especially males, need a firm handler, NOT a brutal one but one that they can look up to. They are not a beginner dog and too many of them end up at the pound because yet another person thought they could have one without dedicating the right amount of time. If you want one, read this book first and then think twice. If you are sure you can take on the challenge, you will be rewarded with the most loyal friend you can imagine!
- This book provides great info about the breed from puppyhood to adulthood. The pictures and drawing are also a great visual to learning about these wonderful creatures. I would highly recommend this book to rottweiler owners.
- This book is very informative for beginners with lots of pictures and covers all aspects such as rearing, training, feeding, health etc.Any one new to rottweilers must buy this book.
- I bought a series of "upper price range" books on Rottweilers and this is by far the best of the bunch. This book covers every conceivable angle on Rotty's. It is a good sized book with lovely photography also. If you are looking for one book to cover all aspects of your Rottweilers life and history this is most definitely the best one. I bought one that was 4 times this price and was still no better!!...Enjoy....
- I bought a number of books on Rotty's in one shipment. This is the best of the best as far as I am concerned. Beautiful pictures and very informative. If you are going to get one this would have to be it. Highly recommended.

5 comments about Damn Good Dogs: The Real Story of Uga, the University of Georgia's Bulldog Mascots.
- Even if you are not interested in the Bulldogs of Georgia you probably will find "Damn Good Dogs" a delightful book; beautifully illustrated, the book relates the history behind the English bulldogs that have become the University of Georgia's mascot beginning in 1956. Sonny Seiler, who has owned the bulldogs, has put together (with Kent Hannon), a pleasing book filled with many photographs. A chapter is devoted to each of the dogs relating their lives and what occurred while they were mascot and the growing fame of the Ugas. I first saw this book on a visit to Savannah and was charmed by it from the moment I opened the cover.
This is a large format book that was thoughtfully designed and is a great tribute to the remarkable dogs named Uga.
- I am a lifelong University of Alabama fan but I have always known and admitted that Uga is - bar none - the coolest dog on the planet. And any dog who bites back at an Auburn player knows his football! My all-time favorite was Uga V and I was thrilled when he was rightfully named the greatest mascot ever by Sports Illustrated and made their cover. I was also excited to see this book.
This book is a great overview of the lives of the Ugas, their owners, and the Georgia football program. If you love dogs and college football, you'll love this book.
- This is a good book. I highly recommend it to Ga. fans. UGA is a staple of the entire Georgia program and his lovable story is one that all college football fans can enjoy. I recommend "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football" as well for any serious SEC Fans.
- Guaranteed to please all Georgia fans and English Bulldog lovers, this entertaining book contains the individual stories of six beloved Ugas who have served as mascots for the University of Georgia since 1956. Filled with delightful photos, illustrations and memorabilia spanning nearly five decades, it is loaded with fun facts, heartwarming stories--even poems written in their honor. Uga flies free on Delta, has an air-conditioned doghouse and an official Student ID Card, eats steak, attends social affairs, occasionally wears a tux, has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, in Coca Cola ads, in Playboy magazine, in Animals Who's Who, on credit cards, in movies, TV shows--and more! Following lavish funeral tributes, Ugas I through V were interred in a mausoleum at Sanford Stadium with inspiring epitaphs outlining their achievements engraved on bronze tablets. Uga VI has already made a name for himself "woofing" his encouragement to a well-deserved SEC title in 2002. GO DAWGS and long live Uga VI.
- Despite the fact that I am from Georgia Tech, the long time feud of UGA, sarcastically, I am also an English bulldog lover, having owned 2 English bullies in my life thus far. I highly recommend this book to all bulldog lovers, even if they are not associated with UGA.

4 comments about Raising Pigs Successfully.
- I just wasn't impressed with the detail of this book. Unless you know NOTHING of raising pigs, don't buy this one. The "Storey's Guide to Pigs" by Kelly Klober was much more informative, buy it. Sorry.
- Raised on a farm, I learned to respect pigs and not use this type of information for the ideas in this book. Please don't buy this useless book. It is not about the ethics we need in this country. Thank you
- I purchased this book and love it. I go back to read it when I have forgot something. I love the story about the boar that ran away from home to come back to Ms. Piggy. I enjoyed every moment of the book. I would love to see more pictures in it of different pig breeds, but other then that, it was very informational.
- Kathy and Bob make it easy for anyone to understand the fine art of raising your own pigs for the dining pleasure of your family. An especially good book for those that plan on having a sustainable food source in times of disruption, such as Year 2000 grocery disruptions, an extended illness, layoffs, recession, depression, etc. This book will help you understand that you too can raise your own oinker for hard times. It's a CAN DO kind of book.

1 comments about Homeopathy for Horses (Threshold Picture Guide).
- This book will leave all other Homeopathy books written about the Equine in the dust,
The care and detail in the writing translates into the most thorough Homeopathy book for
horses that you will find anywhere. Excellent detail throughout, well explained, and a top-notch
index which makes it easy to find a symptom in an emergency. Contains emergency section,
as well as pre and post-op remedies. So well done that a beginner can understand it but so detailed
that a Professional will find the rare and obscure disease or illness included. Kudos to Dr. Couzens
for the finest animal publication of its kind. If you are experienced in homeopathy this may also help you
with your Dog or Cat in such things as pre/post op, eye problems, skin problems, etc.
A Best Buy for the Money!

1 comments about The Best Finish: Adopting a Retired Racing Greyhound (Best Finish).
- I'm so surprised nobody has reviewed this wonderful book yet! I guess it's up to me.
First, this book is easy to read and comprehend, which is good because there is lots of useful information to remember. There is nothing in this book that is not covered. It even has a section about the tick diseases greyhounds can have because at the tracks, the dogs are not given any sort of flea/tick control.
This book does not take sides in the greyhound racing debate. Instead it gives truthful, unbiased information all about greyhounds! If you are seriously interested in adopting a retired racing greyhound, this is the book for you. It has lots of gorgeous photographs and short, fun stories about adopted greyhounds. It is very well organized and it is easy to find what you are looking for.
I really like Adopting the Racing Greyhound by Cynthia A. Branigan also, but if I had to pick between the two I would pick this one simply because the information is just as good plus you get color photographs and shiny pages. Whee! Also, it is a hardcover book and in my opinion that is a plus.
This book is perfect and lovely. I highly recommend it to any greyhound fan!

5 comments about A New Owner's Guide to West Highland White Terriers (JG Dog).
- For someone who know little or nothing about West Highland White Terrier but is considering one, I recommend this book. It's easy reading and the pictures are very good. The author is obviously very positive about the breed, maybe a little too much, but overall it give you a strong start at what to expect when you go looking for one.
- This is a very informative book. Lots of pictures.
- As a breeder and exhibitor of this fine breed. I recomend this book to all perspective westie owners. What a better way to explain what a versital dog this little breed can be. From therapy dogs right on to working in the feild, Ms. Martin does a great job letting the informed buyer be aware of all the attributes this breed can bring to any home.
- First time and old time owners alike will love this book. It gives a wonderful overview of the West Highland White Terrier. It includes good puppy selection and training tips as well as breed health care, grooming, and temperment information. We particularly like her coverage of the breed's versatile involvement in canine activities such as agility and tracking. It is also a good book for people who are trying to decide if a Westie is right for them. We recommend Ms. Martin's book to everyone who obtains a Westie from us.
- Good tips for training and knowing what to expect. Good pictures. Not always written well, and some parts are a bit hard to follow.

4 comments about Complete Kitten Care.
- Really eased my fears and concerns about being a new cat parent. Used most techniques/suggestions and must say that my kittens are a real joy. I don't think I would have had such a positive experience if it were not for this book.
- I was looking for books on kittens and I got something better:
A book on complete kitten care. This book has got the lot.For a book of its size I am impressed. This book covers various aspects on kittens from where to purchase, where not to buy,the kitten's new home, toys and so much more. This is a comprehensive book.
This is a must have book for anyone considering buying/adopting a kitten. This book will help you before you buy a kitten so by the time you bring one home you will have already a home for your new kitten. This book is great value too.I highly recommend this book.
I was too busy enjoying the book so I didnt bother finding fault.
- I picked up this book last year, and I studied it carefully before getting my first kitten, Ginny. The title doesn't lie, "Complete Kitten Care" is exactly what you get. The three-month old female I got last August is now a happy and healthy member of my family thanks to the advice from this book.
The topics covered here involve everything essential that a kitty novice needs to know, such as vet visits, spaying/neutering, adjusting to other pets, and grooming. The most important chapters that should not go unread are the sections that deal with medical emergencies (falls, drowning, and electrocution), and recognizing/treating sick kittens. I'm lucky enough not to have applied that information to my experiences with my kitten, but it's still good to know. On the behavior front, "Complete Kitten Care" helps you understand your kitten's way of thinking and help you fix his mistakes, particularly litterbox-related mistakes. Also very helpful is the chapter on understanding body language, and how your kitty communicates with you. I now understand all of Ginny's moods by the size of her pupils, volume and pitch of her meow, position of her ears, and how her tail is held. This book doesn't go without any entertainment, though. There are lots of adorable kitten photos and drawings that will easily melt your heart. In the back of the book, it has cat legends and fun facts, and there are lists of cat-related web sites, magazines, care organizations, pet supply sources, and other cat books. Highly reccomended! A+
- I've fostered dozens of kittens in the last ten years and made just about every mistake there is to make. Now that I have this book, I'll never take on another little one without having it at hand. All parts of this book are valuable to the new kitten owner, but I especially appreciate the sections on recognizing and treating health problems in young animals, and the section on emergencies is priceless. It tells you how to rescue your little one from a dog or other animal, how to administer artificial respiration if necessary, even perform acupuncture to jump start a stopped heart, how to give CPR to a drowned kitty, how to slow down shock, what to do if kitty ingests a poison plant, how to treat both heatstroke and hypothermia.
There's much else in the book, including learning to play with your kitty, understand her communications, and provide the kinds of toys and equipment that will suit her needs best. Complete Kitten Care is just what the title says it is. You probably shouldn't even think about acquiring a new kitten until you have a copy. Besides presenting a wealth of knowledge, Shojai's book is fun to read. She has an obvious love of her subject, but it's tempered with good common sense and a great sense of humor. You can actually sit down and read this book through, rather than just thumbing to the section you need at any one time--it's that readable. She has a way of making the technical stuff understandable to us folks whose only qualification is that we love kitties.

3 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Miniature Schnauzers (New Owner's Guide To...).
- Based on other's recommendation prior to mine, I was looking forward to this as a definitive Miniature Schnauzer guide, but was somewhat disappointed in its lack of depth on certain subjects.
Not to say this is a bad book or has irrelevant information, but for new dog owners it has both its pros and cons.
As a plus, the explanation of the breed and characteristics is thorough, as well as picking a puppy and what to expect. This takes up the first 1/3rd of the book.
I found the grooming section to be great in some areas, but not so informative in others. There is very little information about cleaning ears (the proper and safe way) and why it's important (ear mites, bacterial odor, discharge, infection)....the best it says is pluck hairs and clean with rubbing alcohol in only two sentences. There should be much more on ear treatment. There is a section devoted to oral care which is good. This book more so concentrates on brushing the coat, baths, and clippering.
I would have also like to have seen more on body language as new owners may not always know what their dog is trying to communicate to them. This includes if the puppy or mature dog is not feeling well and what 'subtle' signs to look for.
There is a section describing ailments, parasites, and diseases...but not so much information on how to treat, other than: "See your vet." Duh!!
The only training really covered in this book is "house-breaking, which while important is one facet of a puppy/human relationship. I would have liked to see expanded discussion on other basics such as: Sit, Stay, barking, etc...
While I do recommend this book, it is a very high level look at the breed, but lacking in some detailed information on important day to day concerns of new dog owners.
- This book is pretty well done as pet books go. The photos and the quality of the paper are excellent. I was a little disappointed not to have an anticipated weight as a function of age or the weight range of the mature dog. I would like to have known how much and when (what hours of the day and how many times a day is best)to feed the puppy as he matures. I got all this info and more from the vet, but more detail in the book, of what to do and what to expect from the typical schnauzer from puppy to dog would have been helpful.
There is a lot of information about showing and breeding, but these are not my areas of interest. The section on Housebreaking and Training beginning on page 80, is well done and quite helpful.
- I bought this book because we were considering getting a new puppy and were interested in Miniature Schnauzers. I liked this book because it gave a brief history and evolution of today's dog which helped me understand more fully the personality of the Miniature Schnauzer. It also answered my key questions about selecting a puppy, as well as, crate training and housebreaking. The book will give you a general feel for what will be needed to appropriately care for this breed. I feel that after reading this book, I can better converse with breeders and am more informed. Since I haven't read any other books specific to the Miniature Schnauzer, I cannot compare to other sources. But I have found it more than adequate for my current need - preparation for purchasing a puppy. One final comment, the book has glossy pages and has plenty of supplemental color photographs. I particulary enjoyed the photographs of a variety of dogs of this breed - it helps me tremendously in the selection process.

1 comments about Dogs: A Natural History.
- Dogs, A Natural History, by Jake Page is an interesting and fascinating book. The author, who has six dogs, writes about dogs throughout history and how they have evolved over time to become the much loved companions that they are today.
Page writes about many of the ancient dogs that lived around the world, and what they have in common with the dogs that live with us today. He also sheds some light on why dogs don't see colors the same as we do - and according to the experts, dogs do see more than black and white! Laughter is another subject he touches on, writing about the science that shows that dogs do indeed laugh. And, as many dog people will attest, dogs certainly know how to love - and Page gives his views on why he is convinced this is indeed true. These are just a few of the many topics he covers that explain why our dogs are the way they are and why they do some of the things they do. It's a very insightful book (written by someone who obviously loves dogs) for anyone who wants to learn more about the canines they share their life with.

5 comments about Founder: Prevention and Cure the Natural Way.
- I have many books on founder and laminitis- Having a pony that has had and got founder again it really helped me with the right path and makes total sense. Excited to see the results as she is already walking better now.
- Some good information here but some of it has been outdated, particularly with the research by Kathryn Watts (safergrass.org) - that free choice hay herein recommended may be making things worse. Other information pertinent to the discussion is alluded to but you have to pay again for this as it is in other publications by the same author.
- A must read for the intelligent & caring horse owner. Paying attention to this "perspective" of horse management is the best way to express how interested you are in the welfare of your horse.
- He tells you in body of the book that he will provide information at the end that he forgot to provide!!
- I have not yet received this book although it was ordered on the 15th June.
What has happened?
