2 comments about Living With a Bichon Frisé: Book with Bonus DVD (Living with a Pet).

  1. I bought this book to learn more about the Bichon breed. I have a five year old rescued Bichon male. The book describes his characteristics perfectly. It offers some training methods and things to know before you make a very long committment to these little dogs. They are very long lived.

Pro: Easy to read, good pictures, on target in describing the breed
    Con: None

  2. If you are a totally smitten Bichon Frise owner, as I am, you will have to add this book to your collection. I own many many volumes but this portrays the breed in all its glory. The cover is your first clue to the beauty of the publication. I particularly like the personal short tales that are set in pastel color insets. And I find the photo section on grooming exceptionally helpful--you will definitely need these close-ups if you dare to try your hand at this art. Chapter 2 reminds you that this loving breed in NOT FOR EVERYONE; they should not be left alone for long periods of time.

Eight chapters and 128 pages of great information, super binding, heavy shiny paper, with sharp color photos; this book succinctly covers all you need to know.

5 comments about Your Purebred Puppy, Second Edition: A Buyer's Guide, Completely Revised and Updated.

  1. The reason this book is different and better than the rest is that it gives HONEST dog reveiws as opposed to a dog glorification books that descibe every breed in the most delightful way calling bad traits delightful words like a "little daredevil" - translation - does not follow commands. This author seems to say it all in a way no other website or book I have seen does. Yeah he/she does not put in the beautiful pictures - but if you want a table coffee book of dogs buy some other book. If you want the brass tacks truth before you invest in a 10-plus year commitment and plenty of vet bills - this is the book and this is the author

  2. This book covers just about every kind of dog, and has a great system for rating the type of dog that's perfect for you (for example, do you hate shedding? How much activity do you want the dog to have indoors? How much exercise will he need?) The one thing I have missed is "availability". For example, my ratings put "Labrador Retriever" at the same level as "Keeshond", but where on earth am I going to find a Keeshond breeder? And who knows anything about that kind of dog if he has behavioral or health problems, other than a specialist? This is really the only problem, and is one of practicality - on the the other hand, it is good to be thorough when deciding on your breed of dog.

  3. Your Purebred Puppy

Reasonably well done. Should help many new owners toward getting a dog that better fits into their lives.

Could be improved by emphasizing and being more in depth on negativities.

    Tim Violett

  4. has great info about buying from good breeders. im much more comfortable buyig a dog now.

  5. This book is very well written and the perfect guide for picking the right breed for you. My thanks to the author for doing the research for me and making it understandable.

2 comments about Anatolian Shepherd Dog: A Comprehensive Owner's Guide (Kennel Club Dog Breed Series).

  1. Anatolian Shepherds are big and beautiful, an unusual breed rarely seen. I have been interested in having an Anatolian companion for several years and recommend this book highly as it gives a clear look at the dog's unique personality and the somewhat different training needed by the breed.

  2. This is a very good book that relates the history and characteristics of this rare breed of dog. As the owner of an Anatolian Shepherd, I found the information herein to be helpful and accurate. This is a wonderful breed and the book is a great reference for owners and would-be owners.

4 comments about Pythons (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. Helps in choosing a species, but offers little care advice relating to the care of specific species. Still, I consider this a must-have for its basic information on sexing snakes, helping them shed, and ensuring a proper feeding schedule.

  2. Since I don't have a pet python yet and i don't want to have an accident so I bought this book in order to familiarize everything before buying one or two if possible.

For me, this is the most comprehensive book about pythons on how to select, care, breed and medical nutrition and behavior on such lovable snakes.

So, hobbyist or the like... buy this book first in order to be a more effective and good caretaker of your own python... =)

  3. 9 main topics about 95 pages , understanding pythons , acquiring your python , caging , general husbandry , medical problems , breeding , incubation , species , useful addresses . A good book for the beginning python owner and a good source of general information . Full-color photos !

  4. This is a good book for the beginning python owner and a good source of general information from choosing, housing, breeding, and caring for pythons. It also has a section describing the care and characteristics of different species. One great section actually illustrates rather than decribes the sexing of pythons, which is impressive for a book this size. I have herp books in my collection costing 15x as much that do not illustrate this process. For the cost, a very good book.

5 comments about Underdogs: Beauty Is More Than Fur Deep.

  1. What a great, sweet little book. This is a must-have for all dog lovers. Great entertainment. It brought a very large smile to my face. I loved it.

  2. This book is great for who it's for (dog lovers) and what it is (pictures of dogs).

  3. I found this book in a little store in a vacation spot. I thought is was the cutest, most unusal selection of dogs and sayings I've ever seen. It's the kind of book that just lifts your spirits and makes you feel good all over. A wonderful gift for any dog lover in your life. Wonderful photos and inspirational dialogue. You just want to keep picking it up and perusing the contents. Fun book!

  4. This delightful tome features some of the (forgive me) homeliest, funniest, sweetest-looking dogs I've seen in one place. Beautifully photographed dog portraits are paired with quotes by the famous and infamous that become witty in this context if they weren't already. This book is a great tool for meditation: every time I pick it up, I find myself contemplating a photo and a quote with a smile on my face. The cover alone is worth the price of the book, just for the happy-love endorphins it releases in me every time I look at it. (The thumbnail reproduction here on the website doesn't do it justice.)

  5. Jim Dratfield is at it again with a great collection of character capturing photographs. Fans of Pug Shots and the Quotable Canine & Quotable Feline should be sure to add Underdogs to their collections. The photographs are perfectly matched to witty quotes and my only complaint is that it ended too soon. I gaurantee that this book will be found on the shelf of every dog lover (especially those of us who prefer the less popular breeds and the mutts of the world). Good work Jim!

5 comments about The Complete Idiot's Guide to Beagles.

  1. As the owner of a rescue beagle, I found this book to be incredibly helpful. This book provides a full range of history about this delightful breed of hound. I was able to determine what materials and equipment my hound would need. It is an excellent book for all owners of beagles, from happy pet owners to people interested in showing their hounds. My beagle is a lovable and trusty pet, so I was mainly interested in the parts aimed at pet owners.

A good book and no doubt beagle owners and those who love beagles will enjoy it as well.

  2. This book is helpful to any beagle owner. It covers all of the basics and goes into plenty of detail for just about anything you might want to know about your beagle or to consider when thinking about welcoming a beagle into your family. The book does go into quite a bit of detail about breed standards and AKC events and whatnot. Unfortunately if you don't have an AKC registered dog none of this pertains to you. Good intentions abound, but the level of snobbery in the AKC will keep plenty of good dogs (maybe even better *gasp* dogs) from field and agility trials. This isn't a downfall of the book, but if you're like me and have a rescued or adopted beagle, or even one thats just been fixed, much of this book is useless as it pertains to AKC or Nat'l Beagle Club trials and events. I would have liked to see just a little more coverage of training and behavioral issues, but the information overall is pertinant and usefull. Whether you have a registered beagle or not this book is a good tool and packs plenty of bang for the buck.

  3. Having grown up with a beagle, I thought I knew this breed, but author Kim Campbell Thornton pleasantly surprised me with new facts and insights into all that is Beagle. Her book covers everything you need from nose to the white tip of the tail. I especially enjoyed the Beagle Bonus pullout boxes. This is a must read for anyone blessed to have a Beagle in their life.

  4. Just had to comment on The Complete Idiot's Guide to Beagles...a couple of years ago I decided that I'd like to have a beagle again...I had one during my teen years...and thought that a little research was in order. I was right and this book covered so many facets of beagle behavior that I realized that I would have to learn to accomodate if I was to have a meaningful realtionship with one of the little darlings. The book gave me a much better idea of what my expectations should be and what kinds of compromises and precautions I would have to make to make beagle ownership a joy and not a trial for both me and the dog.

Both Poochie and I give it five stars!

  5. Found this book to be the answer to all. Very enlightening!

5 comments about Joe Taylor's Complete Guide to Breeding and Raising Racehorses.

  1. He offers a real world perspective on the breeding of thoroughbreds. His advice on facilities maintenance is extremely useful as are his insights into the bloodstock markets.

  2. This is a book to live by, for the novice or the experienced. Mr. Taylor covers everthing you need to know from buying your land to dressing a foals legs. A must have.

  3. Really like this one. Has important information and opinions for the novice and expert alike. It covers a range of subjects and contains great advice for those entertaining any equine endeavors.

  4. Few of us have been priviliged to learn the horse business from the dawn of conscious thought the way Joe Taylor was. If you want to know How and Why about any part of the breeding, care, feeding and selling of horses, this is the man take as teacher and authority!

  5. Have read this book more times than I can count. If you have any interest in raising horses for profit, this is it. Tells it like it really is, what works, what does not.
