No topic has been missed or glossed over. Tess Cook's long history of keeping and raising turtles shines in this work as she includes little known facts and lessons that can only be learned through personal hands on experience. Tess Cook has also maintained a turtle care website for many years offering help, advise, and a forum for all interested to share their experiences. I have most books and encyclopedias written referencing Box Turtles and enthusiastically recommend this book as a must own book. It is a complete how-to guide encompassing all issues of concern for anyone, at any level of experience, interested in Box Turtles.

1. A great gift for the dog lover on your list. Great art, great quotes. An excellent coffee table book. Easy to pick up, dip into and put down. An appropriate gift for most occassions.



2. This book is a jewell. My husband and I keep in on our table and read from it every day. The quotes inspire us for the entire day. Each one is endowed with great wisdom and humor. The art is exquisite. Shari Thompson has accompished an amazing body of work. Her research and choices have produced a rich and beautiful little book.



3. I have just received the six new copies of The Artful Dog which I intend to give to all the dog-people on my list, (and some cat-lovers, too). Shari Thompson has discovered a splendid canine collection in the MM of A and matched them to an assortment of most appropriate quotations from a wide range of dog-lovers - St. Bernard (the human) to Ogden Nash. It is a visual and verbal delight.



4. This makes a delightful gift for every dog lover on your holiday list. It's also a much better host/hostess bring-along than a bottle of wine, for it lasts much longer, providing enjoyment each time the reader opens it. Dogs in art and clever quotes are superbly matched by the editors!



5. This beautiful little book, which I received as a gift, is pure joy with it's delightful reproductions of paintings and photographs of dogs of all types from New York's Metropolitan Museum. Each work of art is accompanied by an enchanting quote or short poem that miraculously reflects the art...how did the author ever find these? Dog lovers and art lovers alike will be totally charmed, as I am. It was a great gift.

5 comments about Basic Training of the Young Horse.

1. I am starting a young horse and I found the book straightforward and well illustrated. My youngster is already at the point of being under saddle but this book will be a very good reference as we progress in training.



2. No one can deny that Klimke was an incredible rider and trainer. The book reflects his experience and opinions about dealing with young horses. He encourages a careful and practiceds application of the aids in order to develop suppleness, throughness, and impulsion. while the book does a good job in describing the "ideal" I was hoping for more "how-to" logistics. The section on longeing does that in discussing the best equipment, how to attach side reins correctly, etc., but the remainder of the book is less "applied" and more "theoretical."
   
   I have to say that I also object to other assumptions in the book about the general horse-owning population. For instance, Klimke says that in the first week at the barn, he only allows the grooms to handle the newly arrived horse and he is careful not to have any interaction during that time. Okkkkkkkk....
   
   Despite some rather elitist assumptions, it's a good reference book for reading about how training for young horses should proceed--but it's short on practicalities and does not offer a very precise training program.



3. This book, written by the late olympic dressage champion Reiner Klimke, is surely a standard reference. The English translation by Sigrid Young might be a little bit awkward at times (very noticable for a German native who owns the original, too), but the spirit and straightforwardness of Klimke's approach for the basic training of a dressage horse still comes across.



4. This compact, informative and economical guide to starting young horses provides an excellent overview of training the young horse, from early ground work to starting over fences. Although the book is dated, the German scale of basic training principles is timeless and very much en vogue in the dressage community today. Based on sound principles and written by an accomplished horseman, this is one to read.
   UPDATE - A year since my original review this has been the book I refer back to most of all, I think because of the handy size. Therefore, this book is well worth the money!!!



5. I thoguht this book was great because it is small and easy to carry to the barn. The pictures help you remember what you read in a "jiffy". Some of the information seems old and maybe a litle out of date but overall I think its a book thats good for anyone with a horse in training.

1. This is neat little book and great for any cat-lover. Quotes from the famous and not so famous. The pictures are great. I bought it because I am doing cat art and the illustrations are outstanding and capture the cat's unique personalities.

3 comments about America's Last Wild Horses: The Classic Study of the Mustangs--Their Pivotal Role in the History of the West, Their Return to the Wild, and the Ongoing Efforts to Preserve Them.

1. This book first came to my attention when I saw a review of it in Time Magazine, 1970(!), and then again in a National Geographic issue 1977.
   
   My first copy (Ballantine Books, Inc. May 1973) became so dog-eared and worn, that I bought the revised edition (Lyons Press) as a gift to myself in Dec 2000.
   
   Quite a remarkable book in it's history, coverage and research. The mustang has been much maligned by ranchers and the U.S. government as a nuisance and classified as "domestic strays," thus various methods have been used to round up these poor beasts (remember the film "The Misfits"?)and subject them to every kind of mistreatment imagineable, including death.
   
   Thankfully, through the efforts of Ms Ryden and her book, and various animal protection agencies, we now recognize the important contribution and legacy that these horses have played in the history and settlement of the American west. They are the only living heritage and symbol of the history of the west, and as such, should be granted protection as an endangered species from all levels of government in the U.S.
   
   A truly wonderful book. A must have for every horselover. Belongs with Ms Ryden's companion book "Wild Horses I Have Known" which features full colour, full page, never before published photographs not seen in her first book.



2. I learned a lot about how the West was formed from this book. Hope has done some wonderful research on this topic. I agree with Hope about the US government's mistreatment of wild animals. They're disgusting and they're still spewing their false propaganda to get the naive American public to believe their falsehoods. However, Hope makes several extremely pro-Canada opinions which I disagree about. First of all, the Canadian government has allowed wild horse hunting to be legal, even today. There are only 200 wild horses left in Canada, compared to about 37,000 (BLM estimates - who knows how truthful they are) in the American wild. Canada treats its wild animals dastardly. Each year, hundreds of thousands of baby seals are slaughtered for their fur. Their bloody carcasses are strewn on the virgin white snow, a sad and tragic reminder of the callousness of the Canadian government to its wild animals. They're no better than the US government when it comes to wild animals and I think in some ways, the US government is better than their northern counterparts, especially over the last thirty odd years. Canada also has an ancient and very archaic domestic animal protection law. Last year, animal protection agencies worked to have a new, tougher law passed but it was defeated in Parliament.



3. This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in wild horses and mustangs. The author does a great job of providing historical knowledge and facts about the early relationship between wild horses and men, and about how horses roamed America before they were reintroduced by Europeans. The author also discusses current issues involving mustangs and their future in the American West. This book is so good I definately needed it for my personal collection.

This book covers every aspect of chimpanzee behavior from feeding, social structure, individual chimp bios, chimp warfare, and everything else you could ever want to know. If you're interested in chimpanzee behavior, then this book is a must read!
