5 comments about Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems.
- Cesar knows what goes on it a dogs head. It all put out in clear easy to understand language. I would recommend this book to any person who is a dog owner or before they become one. Its an update to some very old thinking about dog training. Definitely a must have.
- A must read for ANY dog owner! You won't truelly understand how to love and care for your dog until you read this book!
- Excellent book. Explains in a way you can really understand your dog more and cure there behavioral issues, excercise, feeding, etc. Would recommend this book to every dog owner.
- Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems
I recently became the owner of a four year old Standard Poodle (named Blinky). The minute Blinky walked in the door it became very clear that it wanted to be the boss and run the show. As time progressed Blinky became more assertive and was dictating to me what the routine was. Corrective action was urgently needed. I had never heard of Cesar Millan before but decided to puchase the book based on other reviews I read.
I have found the book to be brillant and have quickly achieved remarkable results with Blinky. I now clearly understand the importance of demonstrating to Blinky that I am the pack leader and NOT treating Blinky like she is a human. I have read some negative comments about Cesar Millan's tranining methods but all I can say is that they work and I have not had to spend hundreds of dollars going to a dog training specialist.
- I recently purchased a pure-bred Standard Schnauzer and was looking for a source to help me get the most out of my relationship with my pet. Luckily I do not take delivery on this animal until early June because I needed to read this masterpiece by "The Dog Whisperer" of Nat. Geo. fame to disabuse myself of some erroneous notions about dog ownership.
Cesar's Way will one day go down as a classic work on dog behavior/animal communication. Mr. Millan, drawing on years of anecdotal experience with canines, illustrates in "human terms" just what makes our four-legged friends tick.
Problems with our furry friends arise when we relate to them using human psychology as our frame of reference instead of "dog psychology." What exactly "dog psychology" is, I'll leave it to this wonderful book to enlighten you. Suffice to say, it is NOT the way you would think one would care for your beloved four-legged member of your family.
Written with wit, compassion, but unapologetically (Cesar is "pro-dog"), Cesar's Way has heightened my anticipation; I am anxious to see how my relationship with my beloved Otto von Schnauzen evolves over the weeks, months, and years. As his "pack leader," it is encumbant upon me to meet his needs, and not simply look to him to meet some deep, lost emotional need.
Cesar Millan has done a great service to the animal kingdom, and the well-being of dogs everywhere with this wonderful, enlightening book. I highly recommend this book as an "owner's manual" for your dog. This is a book you're likely to read time and again. I, personally, am on my third reading.

5 comments about It's a Dog's Life...but It's Your Carpet: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Your Four-Legged Friend.
- Dr Lee hit the nail on the head. This is the first book dog book that answers the questions you ask yourself about the four legged family member. Its not re-hashed info you see in other books. Yet She makes the book so easy and laugh out loud funny to ready. This is a must have for any dog lover.
- This book answered questions I didn't even think of! It's very informative and so easy to read since it's entertaining too. The book gives you a whole new perspective on dogs. It helps you enjoy your dog's companionship even more. The book makes a great gift. Or even a refresher on what you've forgotten or been lax about in doggie care to things you never knew.
- This is the most entertaining book on dogs I have ever read. The author covers everything I could think of (most that is not in other books). There were also things I never would have thought to ask covered that were just amazing little facts. On top of being full of great information, the book is really funny. Several times I had to stop reading, look over at my dog, and just laugh. I hope to see more from this author. A second book by her will be purchased without a second thought.
- humorous and well written. I am a dog lover, thought I have known enough about how to take care of dogs, but still I learned a lot from this book. I wish more dog lovers or friends of dog lovers would have owned this book or shared this book to othrs.

- This is an engaging and fun read. It's easy to just pick it up and flip to an interesting question. The humor is for adults only though!

5 comments about Be the Pack Leader: Use Cesar's Way to Transform Your Dog . . . and Your Life.
- the book (especially at the end ) gives very specific instruction on taking action in situation where your dog may want to step into pack leader's shoes (walks, exiting, entering, feeding, vet visit etc). Still lots of stories (like in Cesar's Way) of solved problems but good specific remedies. Important book to read if you have a dog- just like watching Cesar's "Dog Whisperer" on Nat'l Geographic channel.
- This man is just amazing... I watch every episode and am always just so pleased. His books are terrific - I recommend the books and the show to everyone.
Occasionally, I see something on the Internet about how he is "cruel" or some other such rubbish. Hardly! It's cruel to persist in keeping a dog from being what he was made to be... a DOG. Cesar shows you how to help your dog become a balanced, good, canine citizen. He's brilliant and his techniques work.
I highly recommend this book. It's well written, well organized, and very enjoyable.
- Many books have been recommended on dog training, but Cesar's is by far #1 on our list. His approach in helping us understand the canine view of life makes so much sense. Even after a few pages the reader can start implementing his ideas and THEY WORK!!! He talks to us in a language that we can understand and apply. He addresses how to communicate with your dog, not teach him how to do tricks. His advice works!! The "tricks" come so much easier when you can properly communicate. He addresses consistency in living with your dog. It sounds so simple and makes so much sense that one might wonder if that is important. IT IS!!! Thank you Cesar. The canine/human world is better for having you in it and sharing your wise advice. You are truly the Dog Whisperer.
My German Shepherd Dogs thank you too. They really appreciated it when they could finally understand us a little more!! ;-) They are most grateful that we have finally addressed the necessity of "consistency". We are all much happier as a result.
- Watched Cesar on TV, enjoyed his program. The book is good, but a lot of repeating of his shows.
- I had never even heard of this guy before I got this book. So i wan't expecting much at first, I just wanted to find a good dog training book and the ratings were high. When i first started reading the book I was a little skeptical and the mother hold on the neck took a while to get used to. But I kept with the book and finished it in 2 days. It really helped me understand how dogs see things and gave me a different prespective on being dominat towards a dog. You don't have to be mean to be dominant or be the pack leader. This was a great read and now im actually interested in seeing the dog whiperer.

5 comments about Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog.
- Having labs I could totally relate to this book. It had me laughing and crying. A great book for any dog lover.
- This book made me laugh out loud and cry - which is the first time a book has had that type of impact on me!
I got my first dog two years ago, so I could absolutely relate to the stories in the book. It makes you realize and appreciate the bond between dogs and owners.
I would recommend this book to all dog owners!
- You will laugh, cry, laugh even harder, and cry maybe a little more. I loved this book, and admittedly I wanted a dog just like Marley after I read this book! It was such a great book that made you understand a dog a little better and that you should never give up on your animals. No matter what. If you are a dog lover, I know you will love this book. And even if you aren't you will still love this book! John Grogan is a wonderful author and I WILL read this book over and over again! A wonderful tribute and a nothing but honest truth about the Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog.
- My son bought a beautiful Golden Retriever. When he was a kid we had one named Sam, a beautiful, sweet tempered, loving creature.
Now my son Greg decided to duplicate that before he and his wife Dawn decided to have children.
DISASTER!
Their dog, Cheney (named after the vice president) was nothing like Sam. He thought he was a lap dog --- a 100 pound lap dog that loved sitting on your lap with his butt in your face. Not a pleasant experience. Cheney ate everything, including your meal, as he lunged out from under the table with a tongue like that of a giant frog.
So this book brings home the fact that not all dogs of the same breed are the same way --- kind of like humans don't you think?
- This book is a beautiful story about a dog who becomes a huge part of a family. Marley is as spirited a dog as they come, but you grow to love him as if he were your own through his life story. I laughed and cried with the author and his family as they journey through life with their beloved dog

5 comments about Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog.
- Wonderful blend of heartfelt story and the science of dog history and behavior. I laughed, I cried (like a baby!) I felt as if I knew Merle and Ted. Ted was able to give Merle the ideal life that I wish I could provide for my four legged best friends. Good job!
- A must read for all dog people. While most of us can't offer the same freedomss that Merle was able to enjoy, the book teaches us to never
- The book was thoroughly enjoyable, telling the story of the author's close relationship with a remarkable dog. It also had interesting material about the history, science, and psychology of the relationship between humans and dogs. I highly recommend it.
- This was one of the best books about dogs that I have ever read. It would be nice if all dogs had a door like Merle's.
- Merle's Door is the best book on a dog (or dogs) that I have ever read. Rather than becoming lengthy and told from a professional point-of-view that attempts to make sense of every behavior within accepted standards of dog behavior, Kerasote relates Merle's biography - and all the lessons it contains on both dog and human behavior and relationships - in a way that acknowledges and explains professional viewpoints and then provides insight into what dog owners actually go through with their dogs. This merges both views - the professional doctrine and the human experience with dogs - into a synthesis that is both moving and understandable. In fact, Kerasote's observations are the same kind that I have had with my border collie, Emmy. Both are dogs, but exhibit levels of higher thinking, emotion, and reason that profoundly exhibit traits that are human. I agree with every point Kerasote makes in his observations, and find Merle's tale to be an example for how all dogs should be able to live (within the capabilities of their humans, of course). If you have not read it, read it (with a box of tissues during the last few chapters). And I hope it brings you as much happiness, and an understanding of dogs as more than simply dogs, as it brought me.

5 comments about Rescuing Sprite: A Dog Lover's Story of Joy and Anguish.
- So, am I dog lover? Well, yes. We used to have the world's greatest dog, a Dachsund-Jack Russell cross called Trixie who became an indispensible member of our family. And we are thinking of getting another. But this book almost puts me off....
Here we have a dog lover with a very lovable pet who brought so much pleasure and fulfilment to his life. But in the end, this book really is the longest lament to a dog that passes away and I'm really looking for much more than that in the story of a relationship between dog and dog owner. I have every respect for Mark Levin and his pet. But there's so much anguish in this desperately sad book that I honestly would not recommend it. Sorry to present a contrary view to many other readers, but this book is not particularly well written either. Just read 'Marley and Me' and you'll see how it can be done.
- I loved this book. It is very well written and gave me a whole different opinion of the author as someone who is very kind and tenderhearted.
I cried all the way through. It had not been long since I had had to put my best friend to sleep so that probably made me more emotional, but being the dog lover that I am, I think I probably would have cried about as much even if I hadn't lost my angel.
Thank God for people like Mark Levin who take in rescue animals instead of buying pure breds.
I highly recommend this book...it's one of the best I've read in a long time in spite of the tears, and I'll always treasure it in my library.
- First and foremost, I must say that I am a dog lover and bought this book because I have a twelve year old boxer dog that is beloved to me. He was my first child before I had my own children. I know that given his failing health, we don't have that much time left together. I bought this book thinking that reading about someone else's experience may make mine easier to deal with. I found that this book did not meet that need.
I made myself finish reading this book, even though it really wasn't terrible "gripping" as another reviewer noted. I guess after all these great reviews, I really expected more. The author is obviously devoted to his dogs, but reading this book is like reading a middle schooler's diary. The language is simple and most of the time, quite juvenile. It almost reminded me of reading the essay of a 10-year old child that never ends: "I like my dog. He likes to play ball with me. He sleeps on my bed. He likes food from the table. We love him a lot. He got sick and we were very sad." OK - so it is not quite that simplistic - - but from the level of language used in the book, I would suspect that the target audience is intermediate level children and not adults.
I am sure that this book comes from the heart, and may be very "therapeutic" to some owners who have just lost their dogs, but it is a little too simple for most adults and really lacks a "story" behind it.
- Not only is this author the best talk radio host in the world, but he writes very well. You feel like you are walking along with him as he experiences the events leading up to this painful decision of putting his beloved dog down. Let's face it, most of us at some time in our life will have to go through this, and its very difficult. I am also touched by the small details he adds about his family and friends. He is a family man who loves and cherishes them. We should all be so lucky to have someone like that in our lives. The book is wonderful, and so is the author. I just noticed i could have gotten it in the large print version. (damn)
- Kind of a boring book. Too much about the man instead of the dog.

5 comments about The Art of Raising a Puppy.
- The mindful, carefully researched approach to raising (not just training) a puppy provides what few other dog training books do -- the big picture. Why do dogs behave the way they do? Why are their instincts sometimes not in synch with how humans need them to behave, and how then can their instincts be influenced and molded gently to be compatible with a lifetime with humans?
I read this book cover to cover when I got my new puppy, and bought it for my dad when he got his.
My only challenge has been that the other people (teenage daughters and my boyfriend) who love my puppy have not read the book. I need to get it on tape and put it on their iPods!
- Exellent book with many insights to dog behavior. It's been valuable to training our dog. The only draw back is that there aren't enough examples or "how tos" for me.
- Get this book and keep it if you think of ever raising a puppy. Very educational and also entertaining. You will learn a lot about dogs' temparaments, their various, often unexpected behaviors, and generaly about the world of dogs. Great Resource!!! Another great title is "Cesar's Way" by Cesar Millan
- This book was recommended by a breeder and has proved to be one of the best dog books I've read. The monks do such a great job and have helped a lot of us to understand our dogs better.
- There are about 170 reviews of this book already on Amazon, so I do not want to take up too much more space with our opinions. My wife and I have the following comments about this great book:
1. Easy to read and apply the information. We have Pekingese dogs and not the large dogs that are cited in the book. Still, the Pekes are quite stubborn and demanding. The techniques advised in this book worked well to train our dogs.
2. Outstanding insight into how your dog thinks. We think the best aspects of this book deal with providing solid insight based on years of experience and fairly good science as to how dogs interact with humans and others. This allows you as the owner to better relate to your dogs and the training/behavioural aspects advised in the book make much more sense and are easier to implement in a consistent fashion.
3. Excellent use of photographs to enhance the text.
4. We have lent our book to at least 2 other people (maybe more) and purchased this book for family members and referred many others to get it for their new dogs. We cannot say enough good things about this wonderful book.

- This book provides truly wonderful insight into the human/dog relationship. It is a must read for all those who love dogs. I am humbled by Dr. McConnell's wisdom. This is one book it was a privilege to read!
- This is a well written book. I do some traveling and was a great read on the plane.
- I loved this book. I thought it was so helpful. It really helps me understand my dogs. I thought it was a very positive book (unlike another reviewer)...she really lets her love of dogs shine through. I highly recommend it.
- This is a timeless book about the all too often hidden relationships between people and dogs. This book is enjoyable reading with reliable, scientifically based information. Reading will enhance your knowledge of and your communication with your remarkable companion animal. We are privileged to be at the other end of the leash and this book will help us live up to this honor and responsibility.
For an expanded and similar approach to our relationships with dogs and other companion animals take a look at this book. I enjoyed it, too, and it provides some surprising insights and valuable, usable information from. The Powerful Bond between People and Pets: Our Boundless Connections to Companion Animals (Practical and Applied Psychology)
- This book is one of the best on dog training and understanding canine behavior. It was recommended to me by a canine behavior expert and also by a trainer in the Whole Dog Journal.

- help with all the issues you run into trying to train. It did however help us learn how to start each trick we want to train and I have found it very useful.
- This book has given me and my wife so many ideas for how to enforce positive behavior in our dogs yet in a fun, clearly explained way. We look forward to each new lesson we will learn with our dogs. It's like homework for dogs and their owners too. Great ideas and book.
- I LOVE this book. Got my dog Cally doing all sorts of things. Glad I got it.
- This is a great dog trick book. Some of the tricks are a little over the top but there are great ideas for new and different tricks. It is written easily so anyone can follow it. It has good pics too. I recommend this book to anyone wishing to challenge their dogs from everything to the simple trick to more complex.
- I LOVE this book!
The book is easy to follow.
It is very well illustrated and fun!
I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to teach tricks to their dogs.

5 comments about The Soul of a Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd.
- Joe Camp has confirmed everything I felt inside when I bought my first horse. I am 58 years old and knew nothing, except that I wanted, NO, needed a horse. When she was boarded in a small stall and standing in poop, I knew that wasn't right. When the farrier was hammering nails into her hoofs, I knew that didn't feel right. So, now we too have horses out in pasture 24/7 and there are no shoes. They are happier, healthier and now I too am happier and healthier after reading how Joe and Kathleen travelled similar roads. Validation of your feelings from someone who says it all from the heart is a wonderful thing. Read it and change how you live with your animals too.
- My Mother-in-law and I were so enraptured with the book, Soul of a Horse, that we spent the entire morning in sheer, blissful silence. This is a beautifully written book with clear insights beyond what you would ever expect from a book seemingly about horses. It is really about our relationships with all who we share this planet with. Horses are just the beginning. Thank you for the beautiful book. This book will share that sacred place in my life experience that the BENJI films (which I absolutely adored!) did while I was growing up.
- I found this to be a return, for me, back to the way I KNOW I should work with my horses....but in today's world of real cowboys (where I live and work) these methods are still scoffed at, overlooked by guys who think a horse is a tool. Joe is brave enough to be a man and still treat horses with the respect usually given to them by women, who tend to be more patient.
I have found a friend through Joe's pages of his writing.
Rachael
- It's time, people. In the wake of Eight Belles' tragic death...in an uncertain, stressful world where bad news is the norm, I urge you to read this one. Author Joe Camp, creator/writer/director of all the "Benji" movies continues his love for animals in his poignant discovery of what it feels like to own his first horse. Instinctively identifying with the horse's perspective, Mr. Camp's hunger for the truth led him to own a healthy "herd" of his own. Each one barefoot, and having the freedom to roam his property. Real horse lovers will stand up, wipe the tears from their eyes and applaud this gentle man for shedding the light on keeping your horse as healthy as possible and for celebrating the connection between humans and horses. OK, so he may not be the first person to advocate natural horse boarding and if you're looking for a mythical tale filled with literary rhetoric to pack in your beach bag, this book isn't it. What it is, is a charming, responsible page-turner which we equine enthusiasts can devour like a juicy summer peach. It's TIME. Time we all know what the horse wants. Non horse-folks beware, however. This book will enlighten you, too. It makes me want a t-shirt that says, "Everything I need to know I learned from my horse." Thank you, Joe Camp, for embracing these beasts and for giving them the respect they deserve.
- "Why do you do that with/for/to a horse?" Joe asks. "Normal" people answer, "Because that's the way we've always done it." Joe is courageous enough, loves his horses enough, to find a better way! I am a horse woman who is addicted to horse books of all kinds. I have been reading horse books since I was a little girl. I own three horses and have attended many horse clinicians' events. Joe's book is now my favorite! Maybe because Joe's horse owning experiences are so much like my own. He is a man who loves animals and is brave enough to ask why one does something for the horse. He doesn't do something just because, "That's how we've always done it!" I read this book cover-to-cover over the week end which is unusual for me. I often stop reading a book about a quarter into it. Mr. Camp also weaves a magical story about a wild stallion throughout the book - every other chapter. I wish he would write more about the stallion. I want more!
