  1. This pictorial and descriptive reference is a great size to tuck in my purse. Because I was expecting a more elaborate book, I gave the paper back 3 stars.

3 comments about Bent Ply.

  1. bent ply by dung ngo and eric pfieffer takes an in depth look at the forming of plywood from it's early stages at the turn of the century up through the mass-production techniques of today. the authors have compiled detailed information on everything from how plywood veneers are made to the construction of molds for forming. the end of the book contains a wide variety of examples of bent ply furniture. the book even comes bound in plywood! a must for anyone with curiosity about forming plywood.

  2. This tome does justice to plywood and all its possibilities, and its contributions to date to modern and modernist life. Great rare history of industrialized wood (bentwood too). A must read for modern furniture fans.

  3. There are paperback books and hardback books, but I don't think that I've ever before seen a book that was as hardback as these. The front and back cover are made of plywood. Fitting I suppose. Certainly interesting you your bookshelf.

Inside, the book is divided into three main sections.

The first is a history and description of the uses to which bent plywood has been put to in the past. Surprisingly the first patents on plywood go back to 1895, just about the time that the steam engine was becoming powerful enough to spin a log against a slicing knife. Continuing the history through World War II talks about (and shows pictures of) plywood airplanes.

The middle section is on the production of the plywood furniture, it starts with the bare logs and how they are cut into veneer and finally put into bent-ply furniture. It talks about a bent ply desk designed by Mr. Pfeiffer. This desk has veneer made in Latvia, the assembly of the desk is in Italy, and it is produced for the American market.

The last section of the book shows a wide selection of furniture articles, illustrating what can be done with bent ply.

3 comments about Medieval Furniture: Plans and Instructions for Historical Reproductions.

  1. The second book in the series this one again simply sets out how to make are beautiful array of wooden Medieval furniture, including information on; how to make all the fittings, carving and finishes, all the dimensions and instructions on how to put the furniture together.

I make furniture in my spare time and having a book like this is a boon.

Only problem the measurements are in empiral, luckily I am old enough to know what they mean let alone how to use them.

  2. I think this is a good book for someone who is interested in the medieval gendra. It may not be the best woodworking manuel but it gives a good overview of the furniture and its construction .Anyone with enthusiasm and access to a workshop can reproduce this rough one off type of furniture. The beauty of everything in the medieval world is that everything is a unique piece.I believe this book will help the experianced and the novice woodworker by giving them a starting point to produce their own unique furniture.

  3. Unfortunately, this edition repeats many of the inaccuracies of the first book. If you are an experienced woodworker, the measured drawings and photos are useful; but ignore the so-called historical notes. A number of the projects are reconstructions of reconstructions, so there are many leaps of faith that the design is authentic. For accurate information on period furniture joinery, decoration, etc., see Victor Chinnery's book "Oak Furniture, the British Tradition." For information on how to build furniture using hand tools in a period fashion, see Roy Underhill's "Woodwright" series of books.

3 comments about Field Guide to American Antique Furniture: A Unique Visual System for Identifying the Style of Virtually Any Piece of American Antique Furniture.

  1. Get this one. It shows and tells what a novice needs to learn about antique furniture. Also...a great refresher for long-time antiquers.

  2. This book is good for a quick reference. It is filled with sketches that are grouped into categories (chairs, tables, beds).
It can help you identify the style of a piece of furntiture, but doesn't help authenticating the piece.

  3. Excellent and easy to use reference book, illustrates styles in thier purest form. Does not treat the subject of authenticity but notes characteristics and idiosyncracies of various examples.

3 comments about The Arts & Crafts Companion.

  1. If you've purchased several books about decorating with Arts and Crafts style and wish to get a more in-depth knowledge of the movement, it's proponents and influences, then this is the book for you. From William Morris to Gustav Stickley, Jane Addams to Frank Lloyd Wright, the author covers the who's who of the movemement, large and small. The book is full of excellent photographs and covers a broad spectrum of the styles popular in Europe and America and how it's design philosophy was incorporated into everything from jewelry to homes. When one thinks of the Arts and Crafts style, Stickley's Craftsman style usually is one of the first things that comes to mind. The "Arts and Crafts Companion" quickly proves that there is much more to the style including Nouveau, Minimalist and Japanese influences. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a great reference book as well as to learn much more about the Arts and Crafts movement.

  2. This book is informative, well indexed and offers great quality with regard to print, photographic images and text for the price. Very readable.

  3. I really enjoyed this on several levels. It's a beautifully produced book, with gorgeous illustrations and photographs, and it provides a very good introduction to the Arts and Crafts movement. The book includes information about its origins and leading exponents, and sections on archutecture, furniture, design, and crafts, all copiously illustrated. There is also a list of sources in the back. This book is excellent for browsers, for those wanting a good introduction to the Arts and Crafts movement, or for those who just like beautiful art books.
