3 comments about Golden Oak Furniture.

  1. This book is a rare find. I have never seen a book with so many color photographs depicting numerous examples of American oak furniture. It covers every type of furniture you can imagine. The accompanying text is expertly organized as a narrative as well as a reference text providing descriptions of the furniture supplemented with a glossary of terminology. This is a highly distinguished publication.

  2. This book has helped me immensely in identifying different styles of furniture especially nowadays when there is such a highbred of types. I feel more comfortable rummaging antique shops. However Golden Oak does not necessarily imply American? So I was disappointed in not finding any "Harris Lebus" (England) brand furniture in the book. This book is a keeper and needs to be reviewed periodically to keep the different styles in ones mind. If you have not guessed this is a picture book.

  3. If you are searching for a guide in reference to Golden Oak Furniture, this book supplies it all. It is filled with wonderful color pictures and a large assortment of furniture types. This book has been a time saver for me.

3 comments about Early American Furniture: A Practical Guide for Collectors.

  1. Early American Furniture: A Practical Guide for Collectors by John Obbard is filled with information about all aspects of furniture from this period. Chapter one starts with an overview of the furniture trade, followed by understanding period and style, evaluation of quality, identifying period workmanship, and identifying fakes and frauds. Each type of furniture has its own chapter (wing chair, Windsor, chest of drawers, desk, highboy, etc.). There are many illustrations, but the only photographs are on the cover. With all of this information covered, one can sense that this book states concepts "straight to the point". For example, on page 64, there is a paragraph which states to look for a detached shoe or two part shoe and that this is something to note with old furniture. A beginner is not going to grasp that concept from the paragraph and illustration. Regardless, this is a good review source for the experienced person or a good outline for a beginner. I have spent three times the price of this book for many with less information.

  2. Whether you're a collector or would-be collector of american furniture, this is the single must-have book for you. Well-written and quite readable, this book is more than just a reference. Its engaging style and informative nature will make it hard to put down. It'll help you spot the best quality pieces and recognize those that have been tampered with. For the new collector buying from auctions or dealers, this book is priceless. It'll help you spot the best quality pieces and recognize those that have been 'restored'. If you want to really know what your colllecting, get this book first!

  3. Having been sent this book as a present by a friend in the US, I felt I must tell others just what a treasure trove it is. It has been written by someone who not only obviously loves his subject, but who has written a clear, easy-to-read amd well-illustrated guide for those of us who have developed an interest in early American furniture but who lacked expertise. It also tells you how to care for furniture. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5 comments about Building Classic Antique Furniture With Pine.

  1. I borrowed this book from the library. The photos are good, the finishing instructions are decent, the tips are decent, the information about selling your work was inspirational, and the introduction to each piece is written nicely. But there was no editing made to the book, and it has created a lot of problems for me. I'm working on the plantation desk at the moment, and I've noticed too many errors in the text. I've spent many hours creating cut sheets to plan my lumber purchase, but only to find out the dimensions on the material list does not match the dimensions in the line drawings, nor do the quantities of the parts. The list is off by nine parts.

I think I would have saved a lot of time if I used the author's pictures and then drew my own plans with correct dimensions instead of spending many hours checking his sloppy writing work.

If I were the writer, I would be really be embarrassed to publish this book and be known for producing such inaccurate work. The writer should create a web page and publish his corrections to save his reputation.

Also, why is this book going for $94?? That must be an error.

  2. The furniture is classic, The pictures are great, The dimensions and drawings, You will learn to hate.

Check each with care, Before you dare, To start cutting wood, Or 'twil come out NO GOOD!

Publisher and author should recall and make all corrections. I am disappointed, no more Mr. Howard!

  3. Yes it has good plans. No they are not sized accurately. You MUST CHECK all dimensions........may the author cut his fingers off! or at least cut them....................

  4. This book has some very good projects for the average home workshop, but there are no materials list, only sizes for the various parts, which are incomplete. Some detailed drawings are also non-excistent. Some of the dimensions on the drawings are also inaccurate. Therefore, you must spend some time figuring out exactly how much and the dimensions of the amount of lumber you must purchase. Which can run into multiple trips to the store. Also you must adjust the layout of the part before assembly to account for the inaccuracies in the dimensions of the paticular project you are working on, which is also extra time used unnecessarily.

  5. Short and to the point the material list in this book is really messed up. I received an errata sheet from the publishers which when used screws up the cut list even more and does not cover all the mistakes in the book. I contacted the publisher to find out where I could get the corrected information and was told that the author would not give them that information. If you are reading this MR. BLAIR HOWARD and the information I was given is true, you should be ashamed of yourself. The publisher should have pulled this book off the market when it first was made aware of the problem. Oh by the way Amazon, you should not be selling this book.
