5 comments about The Furniture Guys Book.
- It appears that this book is compiled of a number of projects that Joe and Ed did on their TV Show. But I think there are better resources out there. If I were them, I think I'd look for a new editor & publisher for their next work.
The Pros: * Interesting side bars on specific topics (assuming you can find them when you need them) including materials, art history, etc. * Covers both wood and upholstery work * Covers a variety of techniques The Cons: * Aside from the few pages in the middle of full color sheets, all the diagrams are about 1" x 1.5" b&w photos or line drawings. It is very difficult to see what's going on with them. There is profuse text, but give me a few more pictures and a few thousand words less. * There is clowning around and running gags throughout the book. I'm a light hearted guy, but think this is a little overdone. Maybe it works on their TV show. * There are some technical errors and omissions. For example, Pure Turpentine is not a petrochemical. I caught a few places where you were instructed to make a stain or something without any idea of quantities or colors. I think you would be better served to read any of the following books on wood finishing and repair: * Great Wood Finishes: A Step-By-Step Guide to Consistent and Beautiful Results by Jeff Jewitt * Understanding Wood Finishing: How to Select and Apply the Right Finish by Bob Flexner * Perfect Wood Finishing Made Easy by Sue Noble * Furniture Repair & Refinishing by Brian D. Hingley Sorry, but I don't have a good upholstery recommendation at this time.
- As a long time fan of the Furniture Guys, the book was a must for me. Just like their TV shows, the book is very informative & funny at the same time. An excellent book for those who want to take on home furniture repair themselves.
- JOSE, CAN YOU SEE?
The humor is there, as is the really helpful information and professional tips on how to get the results the pros do. BUT, the publisher should have sprung for how-to photos that can be seen without a microscope! Come on, guys, I'll pay a buck or two more for pictures I can see.
- Being a huge fan of the furniture guys, I knew my husband would enjoy this as a birthday present. I just didn't know how much! He reads it over and over and even takes it back and forth from work! He loves the humor as well as all of the great suggestions and ideas.
- The book is very much like the TV show with jokes and easy to read instructions. I only gave it four stars because I would have liked more pictures. Each project has one color picture in a center section. There are also TINY thumbnail photos in the instruction section showing you how to do something. I wanted a magnifying glass. The good thing was the instructions were well written enough that you didn't always need the pictures.

2 comments about Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture (Ahmanson-Murphy Fine Arts Book).
- the book discuss the evolution of chair, and then studies the different type of furniture such as chairs, beds, tables, cabinets, screens, and stands. each have very good examples and explanation of its origin.
however, I have to point out the very first line of this book "china was the only nation in East Asia, indeed the only nation outside the West, to adopt the chair-level mode of living before the modern period." is incorrect. In late Shilla and Koryo period of Korea, Korea have also adopted chair for government palaces and other government offices, but decided not to use for residences (probably because of extreme cold and space, and preferred the "ondol" floor heating system).
Western scholarship still lack proper viewpoint of China, Korea, and Japan. However, this book is quite very good, and much better than her other book "Ming Furniture in Light of Chinese Architecture".
- Essential reading for all interested in fine design (East, West, North, or South), this work may well be the most beautiful book published this year.

1 comments about Masterpieces of Marquetry: Volume I: From the Beginnings to Louis XIV, Volume II: From the Regence to the Present Day, Volume III: Outstanding Marqueters.
- This is simply the finet book on marquetry available and will appeal to a wide audience... collectors, woodworkers, etc. The book contains a massive number of pictures of the finest examlples of marquetry ever made. It goes over the history of marquetry and the historical techniques for making marquetry. In addition, for those who may want to attempt to build some of these examples themselves, it contains detailes outline scetches of a good number of the pieces along with legend of the wood species used. These sketches can be copied to allow you to cut our your own marquetry... or scanned into a computer to control a laser cutter. I have a number of books on marquetry but this is the set that I most often go back to

5 comments about Op to Pop: Furniture of the 1960's.
- Very impressed with the level of information provided. This book could be used as insight to one of the pure forms of art culture in the Op-Pop era. It's a must for the classroom. It's classic.
- It's a beautiful book, but I was looking for examples of wood furniture that I could give to a craftsman and ask to custom-replicate, so as to match the period of my house. Most of the stuff was plastic--much like the chair on cover. Fortunately, Amazon gives refunds.
- I just don't get anyone actually liking this book. I paid $12 and it is not even worth the shelf space. I love the author's other book. The stuff doesn't even look usable to me. Dlifferent strokes for different folks....
- As a person who collects and decorates with 60's pop art furniture, I use the Op to Pop book as the ultimate resource guide when looking for new pieces for my collection. Every time I logon to the internet I carry this book with me because it has every designer, manufacturer, date, and a full color photograph of every piece of pop art furniture that came out in the 60's. The best part of this book, however, is the resource guide in the back of the book which lists: every state's vintage furniture shops, current manufacturers of pop furniture, auctions carrying 60's vintage furniture, and a list of pop art-centered web sites. I highly recommend this book! I have ordered so many vintage design books, both current in print and books printed in the 60's, but none have ever compared to Op To Pop by Cara Greenberg. After reading this book, I am now inspired to buy the 50's version, written by the same author.
- great representation of mod 60s and 70s furniture...would like to see more knoll and knoll type knock offs, more op art.....there is much of this era to still be photographed and published, as always, leslie pins's book is a landmark guide to collectors.......we just want more and more and more......loved it and still want more,,,,
