2 comments about Twentieth Century Furniture.
- This was a very helpful book to determine furniture in different periods of time. It's a good resource.
- Overall, a pretty good book. Starting a little earlier than most modern books, it begins with some examples of Arts & Crafts, Nouveau and Deco which help give some interesting perspective.
The photos are large, but of varying quality. Some pics surprised me with new angles and views than I am used to. (There is a shot of a Nelson Marshmallow couch in a very large size that I had never heard of.) Some of the shots show some aging and wear and tear which is refreshing to see and sometimes adds some nice character to the pieces.

- Here is a fun read and a valuable resource for anyone with an interest in traditional woodworking. The book is worth buying just for the superb pencil illustrations. I have bought several of Aldren Watson's books, he is clearly a man of exceptional talent.
- Truly one of the best instructional/reference books on early American country style furniture published in the last 50 years. Although the book covers some basics it is more geared to the intermediate to advanced skilled craftsman. It features over 250 pages of detailed text, illustrations and diagrams. The book has over 300 detailed pencil drawings by the author and has wonderful instruction and history of country furniture craft technique.

3 comments about Lanterns That Lit Our World: How to Identify, Date and Restore Old Railroad, Marine, Fire, Carriage, Farm and Other Lanterns.
- Great book . very informative.. Good section on repair and identifiying.
- Along with a brief history of American lanterns, Mr. Hobson offers information on the anatomy of lanterns including how they work, identification of parts, materials, finishes and markings. Seventeen different US manufactures and their lanterns are identified and illustrated with detailed specifications. Excellent advice for collectors in locating, identifying and pricing, as well as, repair, restoration and care of lanterns. From a well respected member of lamp and lantern researchers.
- This was the first book I bought on this subject, and I found it invaluable as an introduction to early lantern manufacturers and lighting technology. The author clearly explains the different fuels available at different historical periods, and the technologies that utilized them. Contains many very clear reproductions from early catalogs organized by manufacturers in an easy to read reference format. Using the entries here, it is easy to locate the manufacturer, model, relative date of manufacture, and background on most commonly-encountered lanterns. The rarity guide is somewhat lacking in timeliness and should be updated, however. Despite that, I also recommend this author's Book Two as a useful addition and supplement to this book. Advanced collectors would likely be disappointed, but novices and experienced collectors will find this book interesting and informative.

2 comments about Dictionary of Furniture.
- I bought this book for a History of Furniture class and found I didn't use it at all. While there are discriptions of the pieces, there are only black and white sketches of select styles, not a good visual. You can find better info on the internet.
- This book is an excellent reference book, a requirement for a class I took entitled "History of Furniture and Architecture." If you are looking for a picture book, this isn't for you. Its black and white drawings are serviceable, but it is the text that makes it so valuable. There are informative synopses of different periods of furniture design and clear definitions. Overall it is a must-have addition for a design student's reference library.

5 comments about Stickley Style: Arts and Crafts Homes in the Craftsman Tradition.
- Great photos and informative text about Stickley and the Arts and Crafts movement. Our house is mission-ish and this adds to the enjoyment of the design.
- Knowing what a nut I am for Stickley and all things relating to the Arts and Crafts movement, my wife bought me this book for Christmas. Believe me when I say that this book is not something you are likely to skim once or twice and then put away. I read the whole thing and found it to be an excellent resource for all who love Stickley's furniture and the Craftsman lifestyle. As a woodworker I can attest that there are loads of great photographs to inspire you to build reproductions of Stickley classics. As a DIY-er I appreciate the home improvement and color scheme ideas that I was able to gather in this book.
As a librarian I have already read and reviewed many books on this subject. I can honestly say that (to-date) this book covers the Arts and Crafts lifestyle as well as any other and is second to none when it comes to understanding the rise and fall of Stickley's style. Highly recommended.
- This book is full of lush photographs of Stickley homes. I bought it because it was well-designed, as well as informative. The photo references are impressive, and overall the book pays the same attention to detail that Stickley did. For example, I was impressed that beneath the dust jacket, the cover of the book itself was a beautiful print of a Ginko Flower textile. Almost every page has full color images, and at the back there are individual photo references for furniture, lighting, and decorative items, much like a catalog. The whole thing is indexed as well. Useful as a reference book for research, or an art book to just enjoy.
- woodworking projects. We moved in this Arts & Crafts house built in 1912 two years ago and started remodeling a bit by bit. Also my woodworking hobby has taken off along with the remodeling. The more we have done on the house, the more we like and the more we want to know about it. I have been in the stores looking at those expensive mission style furnitures and mimic the design on my own piece. I designed every piece I made for the house. Then at the point that we think we need to know more about the history of Arts & Crafts and bigger picture, we bought this book. It is surprisely good book that contains everything we were looking for. Gorgeous pictures, stunning furniture. When we were refinishing the master bedroom, we were looking at the book constantly for ideas and colors. Now the room is done, I am looking forward to making my next project - morris chair. Again, I already know what it will look like from this book. Well, this book is not only for people like me who needs reference but also very nice one for those Arts & Crafts enthusiasts.
- An excellent book for both the Stickley and Arts & Crafts Movement enthusiast. We recommend it.

5 comments about 1000 Chairs.
- Wow! This is book is insanely full of colorful photos and interesting information about each chair. In fact, my boyfriend has his own copy... he loves it that much!
- If you just want to see alot of chairs with basic information, this is the way to go. Real pretty.
- The order came in quickly, book was in tip-top condition. You can cnsider this a quality book if you like chairs and the history and the evolvement of design in chairs. The pictures are fun to look at and you can marvel at the creativity of the designers.
- I make chairs (and other furniture) out of found wood. I bought this book out of profits from the sale of one chair, and within the first 50 pages, I had ideas for several more chairs I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I just look at the pictures; not particularly interested in the history or designer or derivation. If you want ideas for making chairs and you can figure out the construction details for yourself, this is a useful book.
Well-made book, BTW. Isn't going to fall apart if I leave it in the shop and can stand up to a fair amount of sawdust.
- Interesante como guía general.
Buenas fotos, pero falto de contenido, y de pobre edición.
