1 comments about American Windsor Chairs.

  1. You'll need a library table to properly read or simply refer to particulars about specific chairs or makers, or even regional characteristics. It is the standard reference on the subject. But for a subject that often shines with the beauty that so many people appreciate about American decorative arts, the book is a bit stiff in its appearance, particularly if you're familiar with Charles Santore's two books on the same subject. Where his is a visual feast, hers is a compendium of the most up-to-date knowledge on the subject.
Together, they provide all you'll need to know and appreciate about American windsor chairs.

1 comments about Limbert Arts and Crafts Furniture: The Complete 1903 Catalog (Dover Books on Antiques and Furniture).

  1. While Charles Limbert is less well known than the Stickley brothers, some of his furniture was, to the European eye, even better. Sadly, the line drawings of the original catalog are extremely ugly (see nos 79 and 80 which are reproduced as photographs on the cover, you would scarcely recognise them!). I did use this to build a glazed bookcase (no 306), which must be some sort of a recommendation, for I haven't used any of the other catalogs yet. And the book is very cheap!

4 comments about Traditional Windsor Chair Making With Jim Rendi.

  1. I was very pleased to see the detailed steps of windsor chairmaking explained and displayed in the photos. It's not rocket science but I would never have known how to begin this project without this book. Because of the clear instruction given in this fine book I'm going to attempt my first chair.

  2. I have built two chairs under the guidance of Mike Dunbar. Mike also trained Jim. The procedures are very similar, so this book gives you insight into what Mike is teaching. There are some differences, but I don't think they will matter to you if you can translate the information in this book into a chair. I have shared a couple of images above to show you that it can be done. That chair started as a pile of rough lumber. Now it is one of my favorite chairs.

  3. I have never made a chair, but have performed all the fundamentals for this project, but with this book I now have the confidence and a plan.
This book is very well formatted and the pictures are perfect for the process descriptions.
If you want history of these chairs, this is the wrong book for you. If you want t obuild one of these chairs...you've come to the right place.

  4. This is an excelent, simple book on making windsor chairs. The format of the book is one of pictures with two or three lines of text describing the pictured operation. A good step by step reference for when you're building a chair.

2 comments about Chinese Furniture: A Guide to Collecting Antiques.

  1. For those interested in learning about Chinese furniture, this is a very useful book. It is well written and illustrated and gives a good over-all survey of the field. It isn't written for experts, but for the "lay" person who wants to know something about the field either for personal interest or because he/she is beginning to collect.

  2. Hi,

2 comments about Arts and Crafts Furniture.

  1. Generous use of photography and well wrought text lend justifiable props to the Anglo forbears of the movement in this well presented survey of the furniture form. If you're a lover of the style and yearn to sip from a well frequented by English craftsmen then you'll not be disappointed with this volume.

    Drink deeply!

  2. All of the Arts and Crafts furniture pictured in over 250 clear color photographs of varying sizes and detail exhibit the qualities of "careful proportion, fine painstaking cabinet work, attention to detail, [and] excellent materials" while nonetheless intentionally designed in tune with the "vernacular" idiom. There's a brief history of the beginnings and path of the Movement. But what is of most interest is the many chapters on individual craftsmen--and a few women--and designers and commercial makers of the furniture. Individuals and companies in both the United States and England are included. There are more than 30 chapters on these with enough description and commentary and visual material for guidance in identifying pieces by respective artists, artisans, and manufacturers. This volume of material with its innumerable details is kept from being confusing or overwhelming by the book's expert organization, no doubt guided by Andrew's expertise and discrimination in the Arts and Crafts Movement. British antique furniture and a general work on collecting antique furniture have been previous books by this author. The influence of Eastlake and William Morris and the work of Stickley and Wright are given ample due, to be sure; but Andrews also covers many not so well known figures and groups, including The Women's Guild of Artists, Gordon Russell, James Henry Sellers, the Glasgow firm of Wylie and Lochhead, and also a group of "Unknown," to name only a few. With the many individuals plus the companies making the Arts and Crafts furniture and the precedents and history, the work is a comprehensive, handsomely illustrated treatment of this area of antique furniture which continues to hold its desirability and value.

4 comments about Antiques for the Table: A Complete Guide to Dining Room Accessories for Collecting and Entertaining.

  1. The ultimate guide to quality tabletop antiques for those of us who cannot get enough of these kind of "pretties". Have owned this book for 10+ years, and still "pour" over it, can never get enough of it!! Besides being informative, the pictures are literally intoxicating. If you love all things old and elegant (nothing shabby here) for dining and entertaining, this is the book for you. If you look at decorating books and get disgusted with cookie cutter tablewear, or you would die before going into a Pottery Barn or Pier One, this is the book for you. Tasteful, classic, traditional and always in style. Like a very wealthy elderly MD once told me, "anyone can have new things". Ladies, if you think like me, you will totally understand this!

  2. This book is everything I hoped it would be. The photographs are stunning and the book is full of them. There is virtually no repetition. A beautiful, inspirational tome for anyone who loves to set the table.

  3. I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. It is an absolutely gorgeous book for anybody interested in table settings of the most elegant kind. As well as spectacular photography of the most sumptuous crystal and china, the text is fascinating as it explains the history of table settings and of individual antiques.

As a person who is particularly interested in mixing and matching colored crystal and different china patterns on the table, I have found it to be of immense help and has given me even more courage to blend different styles together.

I will treasure this book forever.

  4. This book is a must for those who truly enjoy a great table! The photos are magnificent and is beautifully written. I found that I learned a LOT by simply looking at the photos of china, crystal and glassware. From this book alone, I chose my sterling silver flatware and china patterns and have never regretted it! The book also gives ideas on simple room decorations as well - even though this is not a primary focus of the book itself. I really can't say enough good about this book......
