It covers the period from the late 1880s through the early 1900s. Its contents are interestingly arranged according to room. 3 comments about Thos Moser's Measured Shop Drawings for American Furniture.
- As a woodworker, I can say that Thomas Moser is a living legend in the world of furniture design. His thriving company is a testament to that. As a librarian, I am here to say that this book is invaluable to anyone interested in building Moser's furniture designs for themselves.
Thomas Moser's furniture, influenced heavily by the Shakers and Moser's own desire to create lasting quality, has become nearly a style unto itself. This book is his attempt to give amateur woodworkers the ability to copy his designs for their own homes.
What I really like about this book is that is spends zero time covering the basics of furniture building. To a beginner, this book might seem too sparse to be useful, but to anyone who has successfully built a piece of fine furniture, this book stands as a guide to producing many classics. With over 70 projects included, all with measured drawings and excellent attention to detail, this is a treasure trove for those who appreciate Moser's artistry. Though this book is not new (the designs in the book are mainly from the 70's and 80's), every one of these projects is still "in style" due to the classic Shaker influences in his designs.
I highly recommend this book to all furniture makers who want to copy a Moser piece and to any library wanting to collect in this area!
- The text is clearly presented. I enjoyed the drawings but found I needed additional drawings that required careful calculations.
- Moser's book has detailed drawings for many of the beautifully simple furniture products his company sells. The elegant proportions and simple lines are in a semi-Shaker style. Details are shown blown up with the project for minor details, or in an appendix for features (drawers, web frames) common to several projects.
Many color photographs of the finished pieces are given as well, but they are not working photos, they're more like sales photos to show what the finished piece is like. This book is much more useful than some of the compilations of hundred-year-old plans that are available. Some of those are little more than measured drawings of the finished item. Recommended companion volumes are Taunton Press's "In the Shaker Style" for plans and Moser's "How to build Shaker furniture" for tips and techniques. The drawings are accessible to an average-skilled woodworker but they are not plans as such, no cut-lists or instructions. I also have found additional construction details in the gorgeous sales brochures his company mails and on the Moser furniture web site.

1 comments about Masterpieces of Furniture in Photographs and Measured Drawings.
- The combination of photos, measured drawings, and brief commentary makes this a great resource for designers and craftspeople. On the down side, the drawings are at weird scales (like 0'-1 3/8" = 1'-0"), so if you want to draft from them, you'll have to get crazy with the photocopier or scanner. The organization could be a little tighter-- there's a stool in the table section--, and the pieces aren't quite in chronological order. Still, the details are clear, and the catalog is fairly good. One hundred and two photos! Over 500 drawings! (I think this includes each view/detail.)
It's a Dover book! You're not going to find this information for less.

1 comments about Furniture of the Depression Era: Furniture and Accessories of the 1920S, 1930s and 1940s.
- I picked up this book because I see so much of this furniture in antique shops and I wanted to be able to distinguish it from other periods. Although I've never been particularly interested in this period, I found this book to be quite interesting.
The book explains the history of the furniture and its development, with lots of anecdotes along the way. Through the many color photographs, you will learn how to spot specific types of furniture and get a better idea of which company might have manufactured a specific piece. One of the topics addressed early in the book is the use of veneer. The authors explain that 'veneer' doesn't have to be a dirty word and that even the ancient Egyptians used a form of it. There is a section devoted to the repairing and replacing of veneer. They also provide detailed explanations for such terms as 'burl' and 'pollarding.' They explain the differences between better- and lesser-quality ('borax') furniture, and a pricelist (1999 values) is also included.

4 comments about Watches International: Volume VII (Watches International).
- While this book is heavy on pictures (and just heavy), it lacks some interesting brands and it doesn't have prices (even suggest retail helps establish a base line). There are better books on watches on the market but the price is low enough to make it (for me) not all bad.
You can do better - keep clicking !
- How about some new information? And lately, it seems like this collection is nothing more than the same as last year, with a few pages of what's popular this year added in. Where's a comprehensive book?
- to be honest the book is filled with wonderful color pictures and descriptions of the watches.this is a good book to have for reference. I do perfer wristwatch annual as they include the prices. but for the money tis is a good book for someone who either collects or appreciates fine watches. a very nice overview
- This book is a very comprehensive volume of today's finest watch brands and timepieces. There are at least two major brand omissions, including my favorite watch brand, Omega.
There is not a single mention of Omega or Blancpain in the entire book. This leads me to believe that the book is really a pay to play advertising vehicle and these brands either chose not to participate or were intentionally left out. For me, with Omega missing, the book became a disappointment.

2 comments about Miller's: Chinese & Japanese Antiques: Buyer's Guide (Miller's Buyer's Guide).
- Encompassing 2000 years of history, and everything from ceramics to furniture to Mao era propaganda, it isn't a comprehensive guide to any one subject. It isn't meant to be; nevertheless it serves as a full intro to the field in one portable volume. Several thousand pieces with prices in Brit pounds (most for museum quality specimens, not the more everyday kind). About 70% b&w, though does include some lovely color sections. Still a bargain.
- I bought this book to help me discern chinese porcelain and learn a little more about the oriental collectables. This book has too many black and white photos and falls short of being a necessary refrence guide.

3 comments about From Flea Market to Fabulous.
- I bought this book because of the old milk can on the cover; I fell in love with the old kerosene heater instead. I went on a massive search to find a kersoene heater and once I found one, I had it cleaned and painted in one weekend. This book has great ideas and easy to follow instructions. I will definitely use this book again.
- If you want to see more visit her new website at www.kandjcustommurals.com
Amazing work! Buy her pattern books, cd's and pattern packets too! You can't find them anywhere else.
- Once again, Kerry Trout displays her work with beautiful photography and easy-to-follow instructions. I'm ready to hit the flea markets and start painting!!!
