5 comments about The Golden Dream.
- Gerry Faust was a man equally passionate about his faith as he was about football. Although he might not appreciate it, in reading the book I found myself reminded of Jimmy Carter. Both were honorable and honest men who came from humble beginnings and landed the greatest jobs in the country, only to find themselves a bit overwhelmed by the demands and expectations of the positions they held.
In this book, Coach Faust presents an honest account of the good times and bad, and provides insight into some of the decisions he made and lessons he learned. He and his co-author also offer the views from others who have a different take on certain situations. The result is a fascinating and balanced account of being at the center of America's most storied college football program. For those who are familiar with Notre Dame, you will also enjoy reading Coach Faust's accounts of his time on campus and his relationships with many of the players, recruits, and the university's administration, specifically Fr. Hesburgh and Fr. Joyce.
- An interesting read for a Notre Dame fan; but never a plausibe explanation for why Notre Dame lost so big under Faust (who seemed like a good guy....just way overmatched for that job). The last 30 years or so seems to show one thing about ND football, they hire the right coach (Ara, Devine, Holtz.....now Weiss??) and they win big. They hire the wrong coach (Faust, Davies, etc.) and they lose big.
Faust obviously loves the school (feels like he loves the school more than he loves football) which is great for an administrator, but not for the head coach of the team.
- I met Coach Faust at ND, where he signed my copy. I attended the University of Notre Dame during his first two years, and I remember defeating LSU and being ranked #1.
Coach is a great human being who was given the opportunity of a lifetime. He was not overly successful, but how many get their life-long dream? Easy and fun to read and a great learning experience.
- I was at ND for Coach Faust's first two years. I remember his first game win against LSU and being ranked #1. I also recall his inspirational talks in that raspy voice of his.
Yes, he did NOT have a great won loss record. But he won some huge games and put a lot of points on the board. (Contrast with Ty Willingham's recent results.) He also recruited many of the players who were part of the 1988 championship. Classy man, inspirational coach and someone whom I will always hold in high regard -- I really enjoyed the book. Jeff, ND Class of 1982.
- Gerry Faust represents what is good in sports today. No he did not have great teams at Notre Dame but he is a true role-model for both coaches and athletes. The good natured stories kept you from putting the book down. He truly cares about people. That is what I loved about the book. If more coaches had this approach we would not have cheating, scandels, and a me approach. The book gives the reader confidence that there are good people, not only in sports, but in the world today. You do not have to be into sports in order to appreciate this book. I recommend it to all people of all ages. It will make you feel good!

1 comments about Buckeye Bumper Crops.
- The book was a good quick read with some nice stories about some of the star recruits Bill Conley helped bring into The Ohio State University. I was a bit disappointed in that there wasn't more inside scoop than there was but...oh well. You won't find any earthshattering news here about the program but it will be a nice read for Buckeye fans on a lazy afternoon.

4 comments about All Madden: Hey, I'm Talking Pro Football!.
- I bought this book years ago, and with the big game approaching I broke it out over the weekend. A classic read, with all his inimitable cliches, and euphemisms, and pontification. It's almost like you're sitting next to him in the booth. Great job.
- John Madden, Maddencruiser and all loves
Football and wants you out there to love
it too. All his books are well worth the
buy and at least you can read them easily
as John does like he does when ordering
lunch - no 'banjo orders' - he doesn't
"string" things along. He gives it to
you plain, straight and to the point.
Always liked John but the sorry partners
he has had to be saddled with lately -
Al Michaels [nee Dave Bronstein, at least
that's what he played in a 1968 episode of
Hawai'i Five-0] - yeuch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- FOX Commentator John Madden's book All Madden, Hey, I'm Talking Pro Football, is a nice little romp through the meaningless things All Madden. You ever watch a game and hear John babble on about the socks a player is wearing, or how he went ice fishing after a Vikings game? Well the same thing goes with this book. He babbles on and on about weird things, but he does come up with a lot of great insights and football facts just like he does in game commentaries.
I just wish they had use the word 'Hey' a little less.
- John madden is absolutely awesome. He writes just like he announces games, which is great because you aren't supposed to write like you talk. There's a chapter called, "Hating the Cowboys is Healthy"! Hwo can you not love this guy? Buy the book if you're even remotely interested in football.

5 comments about Rice.
- JERRY RICE IS PROBABLY THE BEST WIDE RECEIVER OF ALL TIME. BUT THIS BOOK IS NOT. IT HAS SOME GREAT COLOR PHOTOS OF GAME ACTION AND OF JERRY AND HAS FAMILY. BUT THE REST OF IT LACKS ALOT. IF YOU LIKE VERY PLAIN AND UNDETAILED FACTS ABOUT JERRY THEN THIS IS FOR YOU. MOST OF THE BOOK IS PHOTOS, SOME STATS AND SOME VERY GENERIC FACTS ABOUT RICE AND HIS CAREER. TO ME IT IS NOT BAD BUT SOMEWHAT DISAPPOINTING.
- This is a great Auto-Biography of Jerry Rice. The pictures are excellent, and the writing is also great.
- I read the book and now i know more about how he plays the game of football.
- This is a great book about one of the greatest athletes to ever play in the NFL. You really get to know Jerry and how he approaches the game that he loves. A must read for any die-hard Jerry Rice fans. I recently met Jerry in person and had him autograph his book for me. He's a great person and a tremendous athlete.
- RICE IS INDEPTH BUT NOT ENOUGH. RIGHT WHEN YOU FEEL THAT YOU'RE REALLY GETTING TO KNOW THIS AMAZING ATHLETE, IT STOPS AND COMES UP SHORT. THE BOOK DOESN'T GO INDEPTH ENOUGH. BUT IT DOES GIVE A GLIMPSE OF A GREAT ATHLETE WITH A DRIVE NO ONE COULD EVER DOUBT. OVERALL, IF YOU WANT TO LEARN A LITTLE SOMETHING ABOUT "FLASH 80", READ THIS BOOK

- People need to take a real good look and see what the primary function of our Children and Youth Services is. It seems that they operate in such a way to fit their own needs and not the needs of the children. I rate this book a five star. Why should we be held responsible for what we do while they bury their mistakes within the system. It is about time these so called Social Workers started be held accountable for destroying people's lives.

4 comments about Bull in the Ring.
- Well written. As a Marine it's always good to hear what the Navy thinks about the Corps. For me the book had a tad too much medicine and not enough about coaching but it was still a good read and many of the stories were of the laugh out loud variety.
- If you like riotous humor, then Bull In The Ring is for you.
The collection of autobiographical episodes by Navy Surgeon
Doctor Michael McCarthy will keep you laughing through each
concise and easy to follow chapter. The lessons learned by
Doctor McCarthy aboard a nuclear submarine, as coash of a football team of Navy corpsmen, and during his everyday practice
as a military physician are things every doctor who served
understands and loves to remember! I feel strongly that reading
Bull In The Ring will help the reader broaden his outlook on life, and help the reader to understand the humor of medical life
in the military.
- To get an idea of what REALLY goes on in military medicine, read this humorous, well-written, tell-it-like-it-is story of 2 Navy Captains (both physicians) coaching a Navy Hospital football team in a Marine league. A moving admixture of heart-warming stories about TRUE military heroes, hilarious episodes and behind-the-scenes looks at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton. Dr. McCarthy was cut from a different mold as is evident from his bold, entertaining literary style.
- Dr. McCarthy is a great storyteller. "Bull in the Ring" is his autobiographical tale of a Navy doctor who is recruited to coach the hospital football team, a perennial doormat in a league of Marines. The book is a behind-the-scenes look at a down to earth doc who balances his life as a family man, intense football coach and compassionate physician. He throws in funny stories of military protocol and operating room pranks. You will love this book.
