3 comments about A Guide to Corals for the Mini-Reef Aquarium.
- If I had to do it over again I would have really listened to the first review on amazon! This is an ok second or third source. It does very little for the reefer that need to get specific information (feeding habbits, placement, hardiness, etc.)
It gives a general classification for all items (Green-begginer, Yellow-Intermediate, Red-advanced)
It does provide est. lighting requirements( i.e. moderate lighting, or heavy lighting, or 10-12 hours of intense light)
It also provides the common name and scientific names.
Overall I'd give this a 2 out of 5
- This book doesnt have the following information: How to feed a coral, how often and what to feed, what type of lightning to use and how many watts to use, what additives to add to the water and in what quantity. The book is very poor in pictures content, the pictures are all blurry and the colors are all faded out, doesnt have any info on how to treat a sick or infected coral. The levels of difficulty of each coral are not very well presented and identified, the author identifies each with a color, and the trouble is the colors are very poor in quality and are all faded, a yellow is almost like an orange which is very similar to a red, and its confusing sometimes.
In sum its a book for a beginer but not for the advance aquarist. If you are on a middle or higher level do not buy it.
- There are very few books on corals which are suitable for reef tanks... a lot of beginners rush and get species which never live...or are incompatible..! this book guides u pictorially as well as informatively...thru the pro's and con's of keeping corals..how to chose, maintain, as well as about water conditions and how to stock the tank. Particularly useful to me was the mention of water standards as well as light requirements and the proper identification of the right species which was Just the choice made for me and my tank ! A must for every Marine Aquarists Library..who really love their corals..and want them to live...and at the same time be envious of the selection...the choce and the healthy sustainment of the species in the tank. No wonder they say.."NEIGHBOURS ENVY..OWNERS PRIDE !" when it come to keeping live coral tanks..and this book is the right guide to help u through... With Axelrods vast experience and excellent Pictures I recommend it to each and every Reef Lover ! Please feel free to contact me at prateepks@yahoo.com

2 comments about Siamese Fighting Fish.
- The original edition of this book (printed by Pet Library) was fine for its time (30 years ago!) but to reissue it now with a very few new photos (which still don't show the latest developments in Bettas) whilst slamming the original editon is a very unprofessional approach. By their own admision TFH says that the original author was not consulted on this reprint so the edition obviously suffers from a lack of the author's current extreme expertise on the subject. The "new" photos are usually of very poor quality specimens yet glorified with extreme captions which should be considered insulting to the quality fish that are on the market. The old All About Bettas by Walt Maurus (also a TFH publication) or the current Barron's Bettas, A Complete Pet Owner's Guide are far superior books which impart much more information to the Betta enthusiast. Having kept Bettas for 42 years I cannot recommend this book even for the photos. I grew up and have grown old with TFH books and I am very disappointed with this apparent trend to wrap old information in a new cover or size with any expectation of remaining the finest publisher of pet care books on the planet!
- This is a great book for anyone wanting to learn the genetics behind the different colors and fin shapes of the Siamese Fighting fish ( Betta ). This book will really help you to understand the hows and whys of breeding bettas.

1 comments about Marine Aquariums: A Complete Authoritative Guide.
- I have to admit it, I've bought, borrowed, and checked out a ton of books on aquariums and fish keeping. Richard Stratton's "A Complete Authoritative Guide" is, in my opinion, neither complete nor authoritative. There are however, some fantastic pictures of marine fishes. Some of these are printed on thick, glossy photo paper--making a nice picture into an exceptional one.
The content of the book however, is a quite weak. This book might serve as a very basic introduction to marine fish keeping, but it offers little to nothing to someone who knows anything at all about the aquarium hobby. In fact, it recommends some things that would most likely result in total failure if someone new to the hobby were to attempt it. For example, its recommended fish list for various sized aquariums would result in horrible overcrowding. The information on such basic filtration components such as protein skimming, cannister filters and UV is practically non-existant. To be honest, I didn't read it all, as it quickly became apparent that doing so would be a waste of time. I have a friend that is completely new to marine fish keeping, and I won't even loan it to her, in the event that she might heed some of the advice in the book. Nice photos, but this is one that was sold electronically. If I'd been able to look at it before purchasing it, I never would have taken it out of the store. I see that at this moment in time, a couple of copies are available used. Think about that one--would you sell one of your trusted aquarium books?

2 comments about The Tetra Encyclopedia of Freshwater Tropical Aquarium Fishes.
- a great book with good information my only complaint would be that it does not cover a wide variety of species.
- This book is really great for the person that loves a big book with wonderful color pictures. It's one of those books you can just sit down for hours and look at all the beautiful pictures and detailed information of each tropical fish listed. There's also a detailed illustrated guide on how to set up a home aquarium and a list of common illness and treatments for sick fishes. I highly recommend this book for any aquarium enthusiast!
